2 FRONT AXLE 11A- 1 SEC. 0 GENERAL The cross member, or the sub-frame, made of sheet metal and shaped into4i channel, is fixed to the body side frames with four bolts ; on each end of the cross member are provided the engine mounting bracket and front suspension lower arm. Since the steering knuckle for each front wheel forms part of the strut assembly, the camber and caster angles are fixed to specifications, requiring no adjustments. SEC. 1 FRONT AXLE HUB 1. Removal and Installation 1-1 Removal (1) Remove the wheel. (2) Remove the hub cap, and then the split pin and cap (lock nut) and the caliper assembly. (Fig. 1) (3) Using care not to drop the wheel outer bearing cone, pull out the brake disk and wheel hub as they are assembled from the knuckle spindle. (4) Remove the dust cover and disk brake adapter. (5) After removing grease inside the wheel hub, drive out the bearing outer race of the outer bearing as illustrated using a suitable drift. 4 FRONT AXLE 11 A Installation In the installation, use care as follows: (1) In case of installing the bearing outer race in the wheel hub, coat grease evenly over the outer surface of the bearing race, and using a suitable drift drive in the bearing outer race. (Fig. 4) s Outer race installation pressure Hub bolt installation pressure Standard values 4,400 lbs. 5,500 to 6,600 lbs. (2) Pack grease in the bearing and wheel hub as specified below: s Application Amount Bearing Oil seal Wheel hub Wheel hub cap Fill grease over rollers and through both side edges of each bearing applying pressure by fingers. Apply in such an amount as grease will not swell out of the grease lip and dust lip. Coat evenly over inner wall. Fill in the cap. Approx lb. (per each) As necessary 0.08 lb. (per each) 0.03 lb. (per each) NOTE: When the disk and wheel hub have been disassembled, tighten the disk retaining bolts equally to the torque specified below: Bolt retaining hub to disk Torque 25 to 29 ft-lbs. (3) After packing and coating with grease, install the inner bearing in the hub. Using care not to deform the oil seal and with the oil seal lip facing the bearing, drive the seal until oil seal outer edge meets the hub edge. (4) Install the wheel hub assembly on the wheel spindle using care not to damage the oil seal. Then install the outer bearing, plain washer and the nut in this order and adjust the bearing preload in the following manner: (a) Tighten the nut to 14.5 ft-lbs. torque to settle all assembled parts and then loosen the nut to 0 ft-lb. torque. (131 Tighten the nut again, but now to 3.6 ft-lbs. Fig. 4 Driving in a Bearing Outer Race torque, and after installing the cap, install the split pin and split the pin. The nut should not be backed off over 15. If, however, holes can not be aligned after shifting the position of installed cap, carefully loosen the nut until a flute on the nut meets the split pin hole on the spindle. SEC. 2 CROSS MEMBER I. Removal and Installation 1-1 Removal (1) Remove all components and parts of the front suspension. (Cf. Group 12A, Section 1.) (2) Hold both sides of the front part of the cat on work stands. Apply wood blocks or alike to support the engine oil pan at its bottom in an area of the oil pan as large as possible. (3) Remove the engine front mounting bolts and then the bolts retaining the cross member to the body side frames to demount the cross member. 1-2 Inspection Check the cross member for cracks and other damage, and correct defects as necessary. If the cross member is bent or otherwise deformed, correct it to be within the dimensions as illustrated or

(Fig. 6) 1-3 Installation In the installation, use care as follows: (1) Tighten the bolts (nuts) retaining the cross member to the side frames to the torque specified below: Cross member to side frame Torque 29 to 36 ft-lbs. Fig. 6 Cross Member Alignment Guide SEC. 3 WHEEL ALIGNMENT 1. Inspection and Adjustment When using a wheel alignment tester for inspec- tion of the front wheel alignments, always position the car on a level portion of the floor and adjust the front wheels in the straight-ahead position. Prior to inspection make sure that the front susnensior
6 FRONT AXLE 11A-5 level line Spindle center line I Fig. 7 Camber Fig. 9 Adjusting Toe-in (3) Toe-in Toe-in is adjustable by screwing in or out the turn buckle of the tie rod. The amount of toe-in of the left side front wheel may be reduced by turning the tie rod turn buckle toward the front of the car and the amount of toe-in of the right side front wheel by turning it toward the rear of the car. The turn buckles should always be tightened or loosened in the same amount between the two ; the difference of tie rod length when adjusted should not exceed 0.2 in. (Fig. 9) Fig. 8 Caster and steering system are maintained to normal operating conditions and that wheels and tires are free of deflection and tires inflated to the specification. (1) Camber The steering knuckle comprising the part of the strut assembly is pre-adjusted to the specified camber at the stage of manufacture, and requires no adjustment. (Fig. 7) Standard value Remarks Camber 1 +1/2 Differential between both wheels within 1/2. (2) Caster Although the caster needs no adjustment, fine adjustment in such an amount as it will eliminate sideway free play of the bolt retaining the lower arm to the cross member may be made. 7 11A-6 FRONT AXLE SEC. 4 DISK WHEEL The wide-base drop center rim type disk wheels are used with low pressure tires. Wheels and Tires Specifications Also check the disks and tires for crack, deformation and wear (tire only), and if defects are found, replace. Inspection and Adjustment (1) Inspection of Wheel Nut Tightness Since the wheel nuts do not only hold the disk wheels in position but also secure the brake drums to the wheel hubs, they must always be tightened to the standard torque. (3) Wheel Balancing Whenever a tire has been repaired, such repaired tire should be balanced to the specification. There are various type wheel balancing machines and follow the instructions given to the wheel balancing machine used to correctly balance the wheel. Tighten in diagonal sequence (2) Inspection of Disk Wheels Jack up the car so that the wheels clear of the floor. While rotating the wheel by hand, apply the surface gage to the tire and disk for inspection of deflection. If deflection measures in excess of standard dimension, any tire or disk showing such excessive deflection should be replaced. Kind of Balance Weight: 0.02 lb, 0.03 lb, 0.04 lb, 0.07 lb, 0.09 lb, 0.11 lb, 0.13 lb, 0.18 lb, 0.22 lb, 026 lb NOTE: 1. The extreme outside edge of any balance weight should not project more than 0.12 in. from the disk wheel edge. 2. No more than one balance weight should be installed on each side of a wheel.
