1 1988 Jeep Truck Wrangler L L VIN H TBI Copyright 2013, ALLDATA 10.52SS Page 1 Technical Service Bulletin # Date: Right Front Axle Shaft Seal - Installation Models Jeep Comanche, Cherokee, Wagoneer, Wrangler Equipped With Front Axle Vacuum Shift Motor Subject Right Front Axle Shaft Seal Installation Index FRONT AXLE Date July 11, 1988 No P-2754 (C02-52) A new right front axle shaft seal installer tool set No has been developed for front axles with vacuum disconnect motors. The new tool set is required due to a design change that eliminated the seal stop that was machined into earlier axles. The tool will correctly position the seal in the axle housing to assure proper sealing. It is used along with the current J tool set. Procedure FIGURE 1. Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the brake master cylinder.. Raise vehicle.. Remove right front wheel/tire assembly.. Carefully pry the caliper piston back into bottom of the caliper bore.. Remove the caliper (1). (It is not necessary to disconnect the hydraulic brake hose from the caliper.) Remove disc brake pads (2) and anti-rattle clips (3). Fig. 1 AUTION: DO NOT ALLOW THE BRAKE HOSE TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE CALIPER. TIE THE CALIPER TO THE BODY OR A SUSPENSION COMPONENT.

Remove cotter pin, retaining nut, axle nut and washer from the outer axle shaft.. Remove the three hub-bearing assembly mounting bolts. Fig Use a brass hammer to tap hub bearing assembly (9) from steering knuckle. 1. Remove dust shield (10). FIGURE 3 2. Place drain pans under steering knuckle and vacuum shift motor. 3. Remove right front axle shaft from axle tube. 4. Remove vacuum motor housing assembly (11) from axle tube. 5. Remove shift collar (12). Fig. 3 FIGURE 4

Obtain tool set J Slide adapter J over rod J Back off nut (13) on rod J approximately 50.8 mm (2 inches). Thread seal remover J onto rod J Place assembly in axle tube with seal remover J up against seal (14) and adapter J piloted in end of axle tube. Fig Strike end of rod J with a brass hammer to drive out old seal. FIGURE 5 9. Remove old seal from adapter J Remove old seal through vacuum motor access hole. 0. Remove rod J and adapter J from axle tube. 1. Unscrew adapter J from rod J Be sure that seal area (15) of the axle tube bore is clean of RTV sealant. Fig Lightly oil inside lip of new seal. FIGURE 6 4. Install new seal (16) onto preliminary installer Be sure that the seal lip has not pulled up onto the edge of the installer. FIGURE 7 5. Slide adapter J and gauging sleeve over rod J Position assembly in axle tube.

4 1988 Jeep Truck Wrangler L L VIN H TBI Copyright 2013, ALLDATA 10.52SS Page Through vacuum motor access hole, thread preliminary installer onto end of rod J with seal facing steering knuckle. NOTE: PRELIMINARY INSTALLER ONLY INSTALLS THE SEAL HALFWAY. PRELIMINARY INSTALLER MUST BE SCREWED TIGHTLY ONTO ROD J FOR CORRECT SEAL INSTALLATION. 27. With open-end wrench, hold rod J in place and tighten nut (13) until it stops. 28. Loosen nut. FIGURE 8 9. Insert a drift punch into hole (17) in edge of preliminary installer Hold punch and unscrew rod J Leave gauging sleeve on rod J for final seal installation. AUTION: TO CORRECTLY POSITION THE NEW SEAL DURING FINAL SEAL INSTALLATION, GAUGING SLEEVE MUST BE INSTALLED ON ROD J FIGURE 9 0. Thread rod J into final installer To ensure correct seal installation, final installer must be threaded tightly onto rod J Center final installer into back of seal (16). 2. With open-end wrench, hold rod J in place and tighten nut (13) until it stops.

5 1988 Jeep Truck Wrangler L L VIN H TBI Copyright 2013, ALLDATA 10.52SS Page Loosen nut (13) on rod J FIGURE Insert a drift punch into hole in edge of installer Hold punch and unscrew rod J (Refer to Fig. 8). Remove seal installation tools. FIGURE Slide vacuum shift motor collar (12) over intermediate axle shaft. Slide collar all the way to the left. NOTE: COAT THE SPLINES ON THE RIGHT FRONT AXLE SHAFT WITH JEEP/EAGLE. ALL PURPOSE LUBRICANT GREASE TO PROTECT THE NEW SEAL FROM DAMAGE WHEN THE AXLE SHAFT IS INSTALLED. 36. Install right front axle shaft into axle tube until end slides through shift collar. Be sure that the end of the intermediate axle shaft pilots into the needle bearing at the end of the right front axle shaft. 37. Center shift collar over both axles. 38. Using a new gasket, install vacuum shift motor with shift fork positioned in groove of shift collar. Tighten mounting bolts to 101 inch lbs. (11 N-m) torque. 39. Install dust shield and hub-bearing assembly. Tighten three mounting bolts to 75 ft.lbs. (102 N-m) torque. 40. Install brake rotor, disc brake pads, anti-rattle clips, and caliper. CAUTION: THE AXLE NUT MUST BE TIGHTENED TO 175 FT.LBS. (237 N-M) TORQUE TO APPLY THE CORRECT PRELOAD TO THE HUB BEARING ASSEMBLY. 41. Have a helper press brake pedal down while tightening axle nut to 175 ft. lbs. (237 N-m) torque. 42. Install retaining nut and cotter pin. 43. Install wheel and tire assembly. Tighten wheel lug nuts to 75 ft.lbs. (102 N-m) torque. 44. Remove plug from differential housing cover and fill axle to level of plug hole with Jeep/Eagle 75W-90 gear lubricant or equivalent.
