This unit was designed to operate with Lionel A.C. locomotives. *This transformer was designed to operate on 120 volt, 60 Hertz power. Do not connect to any other source of power. * Do not operate transformer with a damaged cord, plug or case. *To avoid the risk of electrical shock, do not disassemble the unit. There are no user serviceable parts inside. If damaged, take the transformer to an authorized service center. A list of authorized service centers is packed with this transformer. *CAUTION: Do not operate your layout unattended, obstructed accessories or stalled trains may overheat resulting in damage to your layout. *If the circuit breaker trips, return controls to the OFF position. Resetting the breaker during operation may cause the train to surge forward. 1

D FIGURE 1 F G E H OPERATING NOTE: Disconnect transformer from power while making connections. ACCESSORY ADJUSTMENT Turn control clockwise to produce desired voltage. Adjustment range is Volts A.C. NOTE: Some accessories may require a specific operating voltage. TRACK ADJUSTMENT Turn track control clockwise to increase voltage/speed. The RS-I transformer has the ability to control voltage to the track so that train speed may be increased gradually. By turning the voltage control on the transformer panel the train can be gradually accelerated or decelerated in a realistic fashion. Improved voltage control is of particular advantage when operating trains with remote control couplers, operating cars and similar accessories where precise train control is necessary. The type RS-I transformer also allows the operator to slow down the train to the point that the train stops but the reversing unit remains energized. When the voltage control is turned up again, the train will proceed in the same direction it was originally traveling. DIRECTION CONTROL The RS-I transformer has a Direction control button on the front panel which makes it possible to actuate the reversing unit in the locomotive allowing Forward-Neutral-Reverse operation. This button will not control trains that are not equipped with a remote control reversing unit. Only the train connected to the track terminals will respond to this button. 3 I FIGURE 2

4 CONTROL OPERATION CONT. HORN/WHISTLE OR BELL OPERATION Separate buttons are provided to control the horn/whistle or bell. The train must be equipped with RailSoundsTM to use this feature. The additional switch ( ) or button ( ) supplied with most RailSound locomotives and cars is not required when using the RS-I transformer and should not be used. To operate the bell, press the bell button momentarily to turn ON and again momentarily to turn OFF. To activate the horn/whistle press and hold the button for desired length of time. PANEL INDICATORS When you plug in your RS-I transformer and turn on the power switch, the panel indicator marked Power will light. When the Accessory Voltage control is rotated clockwise, the Accy panel indicator will light. When the Track Voltage is rotated clockwise the Track panel indicator will light. The brightness of the track and accy. lights will increase as power is increased to each circuit independently. CIRCUIT BREAKER To protect against overheating and damage due to short circuits the RS-I transformer is equipped with a circuit breaker. Once tripped the breaker must be manually reset after waiting 10 to 15 seconds. Most trouble in running an electric train are due to short circuits caused by a derailed wheel touching the center rail. Shorting could also be caused by nails or screws across the track, long wire ends touching each other through lockon clips, or bare wires touching two accessory binding posts. When a short circuit occurs the train stops, the lights dim or go out all together and the circuit breaker trips. Once this happens all transformer indicators go out. To correct the short condition turn transformer power OFF, check the train for derailed wheels or track obstructions. Then return track and accessory knobs to the OFF position, and reset the circuit breaker. Turn power ON and resume operation. TRACK AND ACCESSORY CONNECTIONS The RS-I transformer has four terminals located on the back of the unit. Two track and two accessory terminals are available. 5 TRACK AND ACCESSORY CONNECTIONS CONT. The voltage to the terminals marked Accy is controlled by the knob marked Accessory Voltage. This variable voltage feature allows optimum voltage settings for a given accessory. You have the option of running a second train (on a separate track) by connecting it to the Accessory terminals. Direction control for the second train is achieved by turning the Accessory Voltage knob OFF then back ON. NOTE: If you choose to operate a second train using the Accessory Voltage knob, the buttons for the horn, bell and direction will not operate on the second train. In the event that you have several accessories requiring the same voltage, it is possible to use the same transformer Accessory terminals for all. A simple method for wiring a number of operating accessories is shown in Figure 4. If your railroad is being operated on a table or platform, the feeders may be concealed underneath the platform with small holes for the leads to each accessory. 6 SYMPTOM No lights or operation TROUBLESHOOTING IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY CHECK 1 Make sure transformer is plugged into a powered receptacle. Try a lamp or other known operating device to check receptacle. 2. Check circuit breaker. Circuit breaker trips immediately with application of power. Train runs but horn/bell or direction will not work. No change when direction is pressed. No operation, intermittent operation of accessories. Locomotive runs slow, or light dim at far end of track. Intermittent operation with constant tripping of the circuit breaker. Bell button blows whistle. Recheck wiring looking for short circuits. Disconnect all wiring. Reconnect circuits until defective one is found. Check track connections to transformer. Horn/whistle or bell and direction only functions on track output terminals. Make sure locomotive reversing unit is not locked out. Make sure adjusted accessory output voltage is high enough to operate accessory. check for loose, shorted or improper connections in wiring (See Figures 3 & 4) On some larger layouts, additional track resistance causes a voltage drop along the track. SOLUTION: Add aditional power feeders (lockons) to the remote portion of your track. Transformer capacity may have been exceeded. Disconnect accessories one at a time until problem goes away. Check for shorts on the track. Check track wire connections. At the terminal strip, black terminal strip connections are common and should be connected to the common (outside) rail. SERVICE This product is proudly offered by Lionel Trains, Inc. and it carries a warranty to support its continued reliable operation. You may choose to have the Lionel Service Department service your item even after its warranty expires.if so, a reasonable service fee will be charged. In either event, please follow the directions below. If service is required within the warranty period, bring the item to the nearest authorized Lionel Trains-Service Center along with the warranty card. If you prefer to send it back to the factory, you must first write to Customer Service, P.O. Box 748 New Baltimore, MI stating what the item is, when it was purchased and what seems to be the problem. You will be sent a return authorization and a label to assure your merchandise will be properly handled upon receipt. CAUTION: Make sure the item is packed so as to prevent damage to the merchandise. The shipment must be prepaid and we recommend that it be insured. Please make sure you have followed the instructions carefully before returning any merchandise for service. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have others that vary from state to state. 6
