You now own one of the most sensitive metal detectors in its class. Take a few moments to read this manual so that you will obtain the best possible results from your new metal detector 2 11
BATTERY INFORMATION This unit uses six AA 1.5-volt batteries (not included). Alkaline batteries are preferred. Always use fresh batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix batteries of different types. Remove exhausted batteries and dispose of them properly. If this item will not be used for an extended term please remove the batteries. Do not try to recharge a non-rechargeable battery. Rechargeable batteries are to be removed from the item before being charged. Rechargeable batteries are only to be charged under adult supervision. Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended are to be used. Do not take a battery apart. Do not short-circuit the terminals. Do not dispose of batteries in fire - they may explode Printed in China THE PROSPECTOR PR2000: - incorporates Automatic Calibration Circuitry and Instant Reset - easily detects objects made of all metals. - can be used to hunt for coins, jewelry, historic relics and gold. - automatically discriminates (tells the difference) between iron and steel (ferrous metals) and all other metals (non-ferrous metals). - displays results on a backlit LCD display - features audible tones to indicate signal strength. ASSEMBLY: Assembly of the PROSPECTOR PR2000 is easy and requires only a Phillips (+) head screwdriver (to open the battery compartment). Use a Phillips head (+) screwdriver to remove the battery compartment screw. Insert the AA batteries as shown below, with the negative (-) end of each battery against one of the small springs in the battery compartment. (Please see Picture 1.) For better performance, alkaline batteries are highly recommended. Picture 1 NOTE: Most metal detector problems are caused by weak, dead, or improperly installed batteries. If you experience any problems, such as weak volume, tuning problems or erratic operation, please CHECK THE BATTERIES. Remember to 10 3
always remove the batteries before prolonged storage. Insert the end of the metal shaft into the round plastic coupler. Align the two holes in the shaft with the two holes in the coupler. Push any exposed coiled signal wire back up into the shaft. Then insert the shaft and coupler into the mounting bracket on the search coil. The holes in the shaft, coupler and mounting bracket should all be aligned. Insert the plastic bolt through the holes. Attach the plastic nut and tighten until finger-tight. (See Picture 2) town hall, city hall or municipal office. 4) Properly dispose of any trash you find when detecting. Do not leave it for other coin hunters to find. 5) When recovering lost items always make the smallest hole possible and return the ground surface appearance to the way it was before you started to dig. 6) Do not use a shovel to dig! Many coin hunters use a small garden trowel and a flat bladed screwdriver. Probe gently to locate your target item. A brass rod with a smooth tip is useful to probe for coins because it will not usually scratch them. 7) When searching in sand you will find it easier to use a scoop with small holes. You can make your own with a well-rinsed empty plastic bleach jug into which you have carefully drilled a series of 1.25cm (1/2 ) diameter holes. Use sharp scissors to cut off the bottom of the jug and shape the scoop. Picture 2 To attach the shaft/coil assembly to the control head, turn the control head upside down. Then slide the shaft/coil assembly into place. You will hear a click when the two pieces are properly joined. (See Picture 3.) 8) If the coins you find are encrusted in dirt and grime you should be very careful in cleaning them, especially if they are old and of possibly high value. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives. You might try and soak them for a day or two in olive oil and then rub them gently with an old towel to remove the dirt. TROUBLE SHOOTING: 1) My PROSPECTOR PR2000 makes a constant noise that will not stop. Make sure that there is no metal near the Search Coil. Be reminded that most floors have metal bars, supports, brackets or nails under them. Press the RESET button. Don t forget to perform this adjustment with the search coil held high in the air away from any metal object. 2) My PROSPECTOR PR2000 makes no noise and the LCD screen does not light up. Picture 3 Stand up and hold the PR2000 in one hand. Hold on to he padded foam handgrip. The search coil should be about one inch (2.54cm) above the ground. To achieve this you may have to adjust the length of the shaft. The two shaft lengths are joined by a plastic coupler. Loosen this coupler and slide the two shaft lengths closer together or further apart until the shaft length is the correct length for you. When the shaft is the right length be sure to turn the plastic coupler clockwise to tighten the connection. Make sure that two fresh 9 volt alkaline batteries are correctly installed. 3) The needle on my LCD screen seems to be stuck The circuitry may have been temporarily overloaded. Reset the unit by pressing the RESET button. Don t forget to perform this adjustment with the search coil held high in the air away from any metal object. 4 9
TIP: If your metal detector fails to operate, first check the batteries strength and installation. You might also turn the power switch on and off a few times. WHERE TO USE YOUR DETECTOR: Your PR2000 metal detector is a very versatile instrument. It can be used to search for lost coins, jewelry or other metal items. It is also useful for hunting historic relics. Hunting for lost coins is a common use for a metal detector. This hobby is often called coin shooting. Lost coins can be found wherever people have lived, played or traveled. Here are some places you might try searching: around old houses, especially near large trees where people may have sat to rest. playgrounds in parks or around schools. along the grassy areas next to sidewalks. under grandstands. sites where annual fairs, carnivals or circuses operated. along beaches, or in grassy or sandy areas near swimming pools. OPERATION: The PROSPECTOR PR2000 is a no motion type detector. This means that the search coil can either be still or moving to detect the presence of metal. Pinpointing of the target is easy with this system. To start the unit, turn the LCD screen Brightness Control to the right. This knob turns the power on and off and controls the brightness of the backlit LCD screen. Turn it to the left or right to decrease or increase the brightness to the desired level for best visibility. When you are finished with the unit turn this knob fully to the left until it clicks into the OFF position. This turns the power off and preserves battery life. LCD SCREEN: This screen gives a visual indication when an object is detected. When the PROSPECTOR PR2000 is first turned on the screen display will become visible. The large icon will point straight ahead. After a few seconds the icon will begin rotating leftward in a complete circle. (Note: The search coil should be held up in the air away from any metal objects when the detector is first turned on). The PR2000 is equipped with automatic calibration circuits that will choose the best discrimination and sensitivity settings. Press the small RESET button, located just in front of the foam grip, to recalibrate the unit to its best performance levels (See Picture 4). Reset Button deserted homes or settlements. local areas where historic events, such as battles, occurred, or where troops may have traveled or camped. your own front and back yards. 1) Always ask permission of the property owner before searching. Found objects are usually the property of the landowner unless you come to a different agreement. It is a good idea to check current local, provincial, state or federal laws. 2) Metal detecting is usually forbidden at historic sites, national and provincial or state parks. Check before detecting. 3) Some municipalities may require you to obtain a metal detecting license and to display it while detecting. These are usually very inexpensive. Call your local 8 TIPS TO REMEMBER: Picture 4 The RESET button should be pressed when the unit is first turned on, and after any detection of a strong metal detection signal that may temporarily overpower the digital circuits in the PR2000. Every time you press the RESET button you should hold the search coil up in the air and away from any metal objects. Move the coil slowly toward a metal object. As you get closer to the object you will hear a tone and the icon will stop rotating. If the icon stops while pointing to the left 5
it means that the detected metal object is ferrous, and contains iron or steel. If the icon stops while pointing to the right, the found object is made of some other metal like copper, silver, aluminum, gold, etc. A stronger signal indicating either a large metal object or a small object that is very close will cause the icon to stop in a lower position. A weak signal will cause the icon to stop nearer to the top of the scale. A lower stopped position means a stronger detection signal. There is also a vertical scale on the right side of the display. This scale, marked MIN and MAX indicates the strength of the detection signal in a more exact fashion to give you an idea of either the distance or the size of the discovered object. SWEEP: With the detector in the search position swing the search coil gently from side to side, slightly overlapping each sweep as you move forward. Raising the coil during the sweep or at the end of the sweep may cause false or missed readings. Move slowly. Hurrying will only cause you to miss targets. Most favourable objects will respond with a good repeatable signal tone. False signals can be caused by black sand, areas full of trash, electrical interference, or by large irregular trash objects. These signals can be recognized by their often broken or unrepeatable nature. IMPORTANT NOTE: After a metal object has been detected you should press the RESET button to re-establish the unit s detection settings. PINPOINTING: Accurate pinpointing takes practice and is best accomplished by X-ing the suspected target area. 1. Once a buried target is indicated by a good tone response, continue sweeping over the target in a narrowing side to side pattern. 2. Take visual note of the place on the ground where the beep happens as the coil is slowly moved from side to side. 3. Stop the coil at this spot. Now move the coil straight forward and straight back toward you a couple of times. Again, make a visual note of where the tone occurs. At the left of the LCD screen there is a small representation of a battery. As the battery slowly becomes exhausted the bars within this battery image will disappear, starting at the top. When only one or two bars are left you should replace the batteries. REMEMBER: The detector will beep just as the center of the search coil passes over a small non ferrous buried target or over a larger target made of any metal. If you have difficulty pinpointing very strong signals try lifting the coil higher from the ground until a weaker, but more definite signal is heard. For very weak signals try moving the coil in short quick sweeps closer to the ground. AUDIBLE TONE: A metal object find is also indicated by an audible tone. The loudness of the tones can be controlled with the SPEAKER VOLUME CONTROL. If you are wearing headphones you can turn the SPEAKER VOLUME CONTROL down and increase the HEADPHONE VOLUME CONTROL. HEADPHONE JACK: The headphone jack is located on the underside the control box. It accepts most standard headphones or earphones fitted with mm (1/8 ) plugs. Headphones or earphones are useful to mask interference from local noise, and allow you to hear faint signals from small or deep targets that might otherwise be missed (See Fig. 4). STANCE: Stand with your arm slightly extended in front of your body. Do not bend or stoop, but stand in an upright position that is comfortable. Hold the unit by the foam grip so that the search coil is about 2.5-cm (1 ) above the ground. Adjust the search coil so that it is parallel to the ground. You will find that the Perfect Balance design of the PR2000 evenly distributes the unit s weight and greatly reduces fatigue and strain. 6 Figure 15 Note: The detector is normally silent during operation until the search coil passes over a non-ferrous (not iron or steel) metallic object. WATER RESISTANCE: The PR2000 s search coil is water resistant for use in shallow water or in wet and muddy areas. However the control box must be kept dry. After use in salt water, rinse the search coil and stem in fresh water. 7
