7 Applications The PULSAR point 210 is a vibration type level control instrument that detects the minimum and maximum level in bins, silos and hoppers, filled with grained or powdered materials. 8 Operation The blade of the PULSAR point 210 is electrically excited to vibrate on their resonance frequency of 290 Hz. When material covers the blades of the probe, the vibration is damped. This is effect is sensed forcing the relay to switch. As only the end of the vibrating blade is sensitive and not the base, build-up on the container wall has no effect on the function of the instrument. The shape of the blade and its vibration mode have a selfcleaning effect. There are two sensitivity settings which can be selected by the sensitivity jumper (J5) on the circuit board, (also see Fig. 6): Position A: Position B: Position C: high sensitivity: Light material Standard sensitivity: Default Low sensitivity: for materials which may form a deposit on the vibrating blades (dense material). As the sensitivity of the instrument is low at position C, extremly light material such as expanded styrofoam can not be detected at this setting! The PULSAR point 210 operates in either failsafe high (FH) or failsafe low (FL) mode. The failsafe mode is selected by jumper (J4) on the PCB. The relay status is indicated by the red LED on the circuit board. Page 8

10 Figure 2. Installation options for the PULSAR point 210 Installation The PULSAR point 210 requires a 1½ inch DIN or NPT process connection. The probe is screwed into the process connection and tightened using a 50 mm AF open-end wrench. Page 10

11 Do not tighten by turning the housing! The cable glands should point downwards to prevent moisture ingress. If the housing is not in the correct position after the probe has been firmly screwed into the bin wall, proceed as follows: remove the cover of the housing loosen the orientation screw in the center of the PCB. (see figure 6) turn the housing into the correct position (cable ducts pointing downwards) tighten the screw in the center of the PCB replace the cover of the housing. In order to keep the ambient temperature of the electronics within the specified range of -20 C to +60 C the housing can be protected from direct sunlight by installing a sun shield, see figure 2. In applications where the temperature of the material inside the bin exceeds 60 C, a heat barrier should be installed between the housing and the bin wall, see figure 2. Alternatively it is possible to use remote electronics, separated from the probe by up to 2 meters, for more details see remote electronics installation. Remote electronics may also be used in applications where continuous vibration is a problem. Page 11

12 Horizontal Mounting The PULSAR point 210 should be positioned on the vessel wall at the level to be monitored in horizontal direction or with the blade pointing slightly downwards. The probe must be kept out of the path of falling material to avoid damage. If this is not possible a shield, for example an angle iron, must be installed over the blades as shown in Fig 2. Such a shield must always be installed when the instrument is used for low level indication. When the probe is inserted horizontally into the bin, it must be turned until the blade is vertically oriented, so that material can flow freely over the blade and does not rest on it causing false alarm. Alignment of the blade is verified by the two slots in the mounting socket. These will be facing up and down when the orientation of the Figure 3. 13 blade is correct, see figure 3. The extended versions (welded or threaded) are primarily designed for vertical mounting. Horizontal mounting of these versions is possible for short extensions if the probe and the protection shield over the blades are supported adequately. Vertical Mounting Vertical mounting is possible for all versions of the PULSAR point 210. The cable extension version is designed for vertical mounting only and must not be installed within the path of falling material which might damage the cable. Remote Electronics Installation Figure 4 shows a remote electronics installation of the PULSAR point 210. A remote electronics option is available on PULSAR point 210 versions. Remote electronics are required if the ambient temperature outside the vessel, or near the vessel wall exceeds the maximum rated ambient temperature of the electronics, 60 C. In these applications it is necessary to install the electronics remotely where the temperature is within the specified range. Remote electronics may also be necessary in applications where vibration is a problem. The electronics and the probe are connected by a shielded cable between the terminal PCB in the probe housing and the remote electronics terminals. The cable is protected by a metal conduit fitted between the remote housing and the probe housing. The remote electronics can be installed using the mounting plate. Page 13

15 Electrical Installation Figure. 5 shows the general assembly of the PULSAR point 210 electronics housing. Figure 5. General Assembly electronics housing The orientation screw must be tightened firmly, (torque 4.5 Nm). The electronics are the same on all versions of the PULSAR point 210, the only exception being the high temperature version. The probe is connected to the electronics PCB by the three leads as shown in Figure 6a and 6b. Page 15

18 Important Note The terminals on the PCB are suitable for conductors diameters up to 2.5 mm². In order to comply with CE electrical safety regulations a mains power isolation switch must to be installed near to the instrument and must be marked as main switch of the instrument. Figure 7.
