2 05360 DIGNOSTICS CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION In order to obtain a high purification rate for the CO, HC and NOx components of the exhaust gas, a three way catalytic converter is used. However, for the most efficient use of the threeway catalytic converter, the airfuel ratio must be precisely controlled so that it is always close to the stoichiometric airfuel ratio. The oxygen sensor (bank 1 sensor 1) has a characteristic that its output voltage changes suddenly in the vicinity of the stoichiometric airfuel ratio. This characteristic is used to detect the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas and to provide the engine ECU with feedback to control of the airfuel ratio. When the airfuel ratio becomes LEN, the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas increases and the oxygen sensor informs the engine ECU of the LEN condition (small electromotive force: < 0.45 V). When the airfuel ratio is RICHER than the stoichiometric airfuel ratio, the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas is reduced and the oxygen sensor informs the engine ECU of the RICH condition (large electromotive force: > 0.45 V). The engine ECU judges by the electromotive force from the oxygen sensor whether the airfuel ratio is RICH or LEN and controls the injection timing accordingly. However, if a malfunction of the oxygen sensor causes output of abnormal electromotive force, the engine ECU is unable to perform accurate airfuel ratio control. The oxygen sensors include a heater which heats the zirconia element. The heater is controlled by the engine ECU. When the intake air volume is low (the temperature of the exhaust gas is low), current flows to the heater to heat the sensor for accurate oxygen concentration detection. 4 0536 DIGNOSTICS INSPECTION PROCEDURE 1 CHECK DTC (d) (e) Note output DTC. Connect the handheld tester to the DLC3. Clear the DTSs. Drive the vehicle with the folloewing conditions. (1) llow the engine to idle for two minutes. () Warmup the engine until the engine coolant temperature reaches _C 75 (167 _F) (3) Drive the vehicle by 48 km/h (30 mph) or more for 40 seconds or more. (4) Stop the vehicle and allow the engine to idle for 0 seconds. (5) Repeat step (3) and (4) at least eight times in one driving cycle. Check the pending DTCs. Result: Output DTC Proceed to P0130, P013, P0133 or P0134 P0136, P0138, P0139 or P0140 B Others C No DTC D B Go to step 11 C D GO TO RELEVNT DTC CHRT (See page 0533) CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS (See page 0533) CHECK HRNESS ND CONNECTOR(POWER SOURCE OF YGEN SENSOR BNK1 SENSOR1) B (d) Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
