1 Diesel Engine Air Intake Shutoff Valves Model RDB3 Compact Butterfly Valve Overview If flammable gas or vapor is present in the atmosphere surrounding a diesel engine, it can be ingested into the engine and become an ungoverned fuel supply. This ungoverned fuel can result in runaway engine overspeed, potentially leading to dangerous mechanical failure or an explosion. The Roda Deaco RDB3 Compact Butterfly Valve is a positive spring actuated air intake shutoff valve that provides emergency overspeed shutdown of a diesel engine. The RDB3 Compact Butterfly Valve can be triggered to close, which starves the engine of air and shuts down the engine. 2 Operation The Model RDB3 is a compact butterfly design air intake shutoff valve available with electric, pneumatic, or mechanical actuation. Actuation of the Model RDB3 closes the valve s sealing element which shuts off intake air flow into the engine. The RDB3 can be used in fully automatic or manual shutdown systems. 3 Valve Selection The RDB3 Compact Butterfly Valve can be used in applications where the air intake line is 2 1 /4 to 3 1 /2 inches (57-89mm) in diameter. The RDB3 Butterfly Valve can be mounted in vertical or horizontal orientations and airflow through the valve can be in either direction. When specifying the valve note the clearance requirements for the valve with the geometry of the engine and intake line for your application. Note that the RDB3 Compact Butterfly Valve is manually reset. Front view of electrically actuated valve To accommodate the installation requirements for the wide variety of diesel engine applications, the size and attachment types on the valve body and the valve cover are specified separately. The valve body is available with hose clamp connections only. Standard sizes for hose, V-clamp, and O-ring attachments are listed to the left. Additional sizes are available to meet specific application requirements. The RDB3 Compact Butterfly Valve body is available with a hose clamp attachment in sizes from 2 3 /4 to 3 1 /8 inches (70-79 mm). page 3

4 Valve Selection Continued Valve Attachment Mechanism The hose attachment is the only attachment available for the body side of the RDB3 Compact Butterfly Valve. The hose attachment is also the standard attachment mechanism for the cover side of the valve. However, the cover side has additional attachments available including O-Ring, V-Clamp, Flange, and engine specific adapters. Examples are shown below. To accommodate the installation requirements for the wide variety of diesel engine applications, the size and connection types on the valve body and the valve cover are specified separately. Hose Attachment Uses sections of flexible hose and band clamps to attach the valve to intake line. x Extended Depth Hose x V-Clamp Attachment Heavy duty V-style ring clamp used to clamp valve to metal intake lines. Several types of V-clamp connections are available. Female V Clamp x Flat Face V Clamp x Male Notched V Clamp x O-Ring Attachment Space saving single or dual O-Ring attachments are available. O-Rings are used to seal rigid air intake line connections. Exterior Single O-Ring x Internal Dual O-Ring x Exterior Dual O-Ring x O-Ring Receiver Cup x Flange Attachment Flange attachments on the valve are available to secure the valve to the engine. 5 Valve Features Selection Valve Actuation Type The RDB3 Compact Butterfly Valve has three actuation methods: electric, pneumatic, and mechanical. Please refer to the Roda Deaco System Selection Guide for complete descriptions of the systems to help determine the proper actuation required for your application. Electric Actuation Electric Actuation The electrically actuated RDB3 is an energize-toclose valve. It operates using either 12 VDC or 24 VDC power. The electrically actuated RDB3 valve is reset manually. The electrically actuated RDB3 valve is designed for use in the systems indicated below: Automatic Electric Overspeed RPM Detection with Manual Override Manual Electric System Pneumatic Actuation Pneumatic Actuation The pneumatically actuated RDB3 is designed for mechanical latching in the open position (engine run) and air pressure actuated closure. The pneumatically actuated RDB3 valve is reset manually. The pneumatically actuated RDB3 valve is designed for use in the systems indicated below: Automatic Electric Overspeed RPM Detection with Pneumatic Actuation Manual Electric/Pneumatic System Manual Pneumatic System Mechanical Actuation The mechanically actuated RDB3 operated by an operator using a remote cable pull system. The mechanically actuated RDB3 is reset manually. 6 Valve Features Selection Continued Valve Intake Air Temperature Ratings Temperature range Standard range -40 F to 221 F -40 C to 105 C The RDB3 Compact Butterfly Valve can be used on: Intake lines of naturally aspirated engines or downstream of a turbocharger intercooler or aftercooler where air intake line temperatures may reach up to 221 F (105 C) at the valve. Actuation Kits Electric Actuation Kit Manual Pneumatic Actuation Kit Electric Pneumatic Actuation Kit Manual Pull Cable Actuation Kit Actuation kits are provided with each system sold. The actuation kit contains hardware required to properly install and integrate the specified shutdown system into the diesel engine application. The kits, specific for each type of system and application, can include items such as: Voltage control module Relays Circuit breaker Toggle switch 3-Way pneumatic solenoid Pneumatic hose and fittings Cable with T-handle Installation Kits Simple Hose Kits Installation kits are also provided with each system sold. The installation kit contains the hardware required to facilitate the installation of the Air Intake Shutoff Valve into a diesel engine air intake line. Roda Deaco has hundreds of different installation kits designed to meet specific engine model and application requirements.
