Transmission Equipment The word "Transmission" has become very important in BSC over recent years with the development of the V-belt market and the expansion of our range of pulleys, chain and sprockets, weld on hubs and other such equipment. It should be noted that these items are all part of our 'POWER TRANSMISSION' range and as such, are the subject of separate lessons. The term "TRANSMISSION EQUIPMENT", when used by a bearing merchant, means: Wide Inner Ring Housings Split Plummer Blocks Solid Pillow Blocks Solid Housings Cooper Split Roller Bearing Housings These when fitted with anti-friction bearings, make up units suitable for supporting rotating shafts and their applied loads. From this it should be clear that when we use the term "Transmission Equipment" we are not talking about the Transmission unit of a car or truck, or any other type of power transmission. Take care when talking to a customer that both you and the customer are referring to the same type of "Transmission" whenever this term (or any other term with the word "Transmission" in it) is used. Split Plummer blocks, Housings, Adaptor Sleeves and Cooper Split Roller Bearings are discussed in Lessons A9016 and A9017. In this lesson we will be discussing wide inner ring bearings and housings including the cast metal type and the pressed metal type of housing. Our main source for these types of bearings and housings is NSK and therefore use their numbering systems. The bearings and housings can be supplied together (assembled with the bearings in the housings) as single units or supplied as separate components. In this lesson we shall discuss the bearings and housings as separate components. LESSON A9015 Wide Inner Ring Bearings and Housings Series 90 Training page 3

Wide Inner Ring Bearings There are basically two types of WIR bearings:- Externally Self-Aligning type with spherical outside diameter of outer ring. Non Self-Aligning with cylindrical outside diameter outer ring. The former are the most popular and fit in the standard housings. These are bearings that can be supplied as a single unit of bearing and housing. The latter do not fit in the standard housings and are generally used in such application as conveyor rollers. The bearings that NSK make have one of four method of securing the inner ring to a shaft :- a. Set Screw in tapped hole in the extended inner ring b. Eccentric Locking collar c. Adaptor Sleeve d. Press Fit Illustrated below are the eleven most popular self-aligning WIR bearings made by NSK. 8 Wide Inner Ring Bearings Numbering system Numbering system These bearings are manufactured to suit either Metric shafting or Imperial shafting. There are three series, but only the UC and UK types are manufactured in all three. The Series are: 2 -- series Light series 3 -- series Medium series X -- series Narrow Outer Ring, Medium series - slightly less capacity than 3 -- series. UC type and UK type are manufactured in all three series. All other types are only manufactured in 2 -- series. The rest of the part numbers, for metric bore bearings, is made up of the shaft size in a code which is the same code used with Single Row Deep Groove ball bearings. Thus part number UC205 tells us the bearing has a 25mm (5 x 5) bore. All other measurements are metric no matter whether the bore is imperial or metric. Thus for bearing with imperial bore, NSK use the metric part number for bearings with the same dimensions (except the bore), and then add on the Imperial bore size in 16ths. This is perhaps best explained if we take an example from the NSK catalogue, as below: Part No. Bore Size O.D. Inner Ring width Outer Ring width UC S 13/16" 52mm 34mm 17mm UC S 7/8" 52mm 34mm 17mm UC S 15/16" 52mm 34mm 17mm UC mm 52mm 34mm 17mm UC S 1" 52mm 34mm 17mm Because the bearings all share the same dimensions, apart from the bore size, they have a common "main" part number which is the part number of the bearing when it has a metric bore. The UK series bearings have tapered bores (ratio 1:12) to enable them to be mounted on adaptor sleeves. Because it is the adaptor sleeve that enables the bearings to be mounted on either Imperial or metric shafts the part number only indicates the nominal metric bore size. Thus part number UK 205 can be mounted on an adaptor sleeve with either a metric (20mm) bore or an imperial (3/4") bore. Adaptor sleeves are, as their name suggests, steel sleeves that fit between the bearing and the shaft, allowing one bearing to suit different shaft sizes (metric or imperial) and lock the inner ring of the bearing onto the shaft. See lesson A9016 for a full explanation of adaptor sleeves and their numbering system. LESSON A9015 Wide Inner Ring Bearings and Housings Series 90 Training page 6

Wide Inner Ring Housings A wide range of cast iron and pressed steel housings are available for WIR bearings with spherical OD's. In these lesson we will only deal with most popular types and you should refer to the appropriate catalogues should you wish to find out about the complete range. Cast Iron housings There are five main types of housings:- PILLOW BLOCKS FLANGE CARTRIDGES TAKE-UP HOUSINGS CYLINDRICAL CARTRIDGES HANGER CARTRIDGES NSK use the following prefixes for their most popular cast iron housings:- P - Standard Pillow Block These are the most common mounted ball bearing unit and are made to WIR type ball bearings. They are of solid cast construction and are extensively used for various types of transmission equipment and machinery. SB - Saw Bench Pillow Block These are a substantial type of housing with bolt holes which travel down both sides of the housing. This makes them suitable for applications where a solid fixing is required. LESSON A9015 Wide Inner Ring Bearings and Housings Series 90 Training page 7

UP - Compact Pillow Block The width of this housing is narrower than that of other standard pillow blocks and threaded bolt holes are provided in the bottom of housings. This type of housing is therefore suitable for mounting where space is limited. F - Square Flanged Housings There are several types of flanged housings available and all have bolt holes so that the housing can be attached to a machine. The square unit with its simple mounting face is especially popular. FC - Round Flanged Cartridge. The round type has 4 mounting holes and it's mounting surface is provided with a cylindrical centering pilot ring in it's mounting surface which makes it easies to accurately position the housing. FL - Oval Cartridge This easily installed housing has only two bolt holes making it suitable where mounting space is limited. Correct positioning is assured by its flanged construction. LESSON A9015 Wide Inner Ring Bearings and Housings Series 90 Training page 8

FD - Light Duty 2 Bolt Hole Cartridge The light duty version of the FL type. Note that in this version, the distance between the bearing centre and the flange back face is shorter. This housing is suitable for the narrow series bearings (AS/AEL) only. FA - Sector Flanged Cartridge. Similar to oval type except that a slotted hole is provided on one side to allow tensioning of the drive. FH - Offset Flange Cartridge This type has a flange on one side only and is suitable for use where the shaft centre line needs to be offset from the mounting frame. T - Take-up Unit Take-up units are used to tension the drive system and can be supplied in a mounting frame if required. LESSON A9015 Wide Inner Ring Bearings and Housings Series 90 Training page 9

C - Cylindrical Cartridge This looks like an extra outer ring which fits over the WIR bearing. It has a concave inner surface to allow the bearing to self align and also a cylindrical outer surface which allows the unit to slide, thus allowing for expansion and contraction. HB - Hanger Cartridge Hanger cartridges have a parallel pipe thread so that the unit can be attached to the end of a pipe or rod. Numbering System The numbering system follows the bearing numbering system of either the Light series or the Medium series. Thus, if you had a UC 205 bearing and wanted a Standard Pillow Block to suit, you would choose a P205 housing. For more information on these and other types refer to the appropriate NSK catalogues. The ability to mix the various types of housing with different shaft fixing type bearings allows the flexibility to assist customers with their varied requirements. It is common to combine the part numbers of the bearings and housings to produce a complete unit number although the housings and bearings are stocked and invoiced as separate parts. The complete unit number is often used in manufacturer s catalogues. For example a UCP 205 refers to a UC205 bearing fitted to a P 205 Housing. LESSON A9015 Wide Inner Ring Bearings and Housings Series 90 Training page 10

Pressed Metal Housings As mentioned previously, stamped steel housings are also available for "EN" and "UB" type bearings. These housings are for very light duty only and can not take the full capacity of the bearings. They are not suitable for use with the UC, EW or UK series of wide inner ring bearings. Pressed Metal housings were once popular as a low cost alternative to cast iron housing but in recent years, they have become less in demand with the lower costs of the Cast Iron series. We use Fafnir's numbering system for these units. The major types of these housings are shown below:- PB - Two piece pillow block This is sometimes referred to as the strap type housing and consists of a base plate and cover which fit together around the bearing to make up the complete unit. Two bolt holes are provided to allow fixing to the mounting surface. Rubber Interliner Rubber interliners are available to suit the PB type pillow block for the series shown in the chart below only. These interliners are used to provide quieter running and also for electrical insulation. Note that when supplying these interliners, the next size larger housing need to be used. 14 MS - Flangettes 3 & 4 bolt hole A pressed metal circular plate which can be used singly or in pairs. MST - Flangettes Oval 2 bolt-hole version of the MS type. The MS type is also available in a greaseable version called G - MSA which has a grease nipple and grease groove. If used with the G - MSB type grease will be able to enter the greaseable bearing regardless of the direction in which the bearing is placed in the housing. G - MSB type has a matching grease groove but no grease nipple. These are only suitable for the AEL and AS series bearings. PBS - "Angle Type" Pillow Block This has a right-angled base so that the shaft can be mounted parallel to the mounting surface and is used witha "MST" type housing. MSTU - Take-Up units The MSTU type is a take up unit and has slotted holes to allow tensioning. It is normally used with a MST type oval pressing. LESSON A9015 Wide Inner Ring Bearings and Housings Series 90 Training page 12

Numbering System The part numbers begin with the designation as above to which is added a two digit code as follows: Shaft sizes from 1/2" to 5/8" inclusive 47 - Shaft size 3/4" 52 - Shaft sizes from 13/16" to 1" inclusive 62 - Shaft sizes from 1-1/16" to 1-1/4" inclusive 72 - Shaft sizes from 1-1/4" to 1-7/16" inclusive 80 - Shaft sizes from 1-1/2" to 1-9/16" inclusive 85 - Shaft sizes from 1-5/8" to 1-3/4" inclusive 90 - Shaft sizes from 1-13/16" to 1-15/16" inclusive Shaft sizes from 2" to 2-3/16" inclusive. EG> 40 MST, G47 MSA & G47 MSB Obviously, metric equivalent will fit in these housings as well. Also available are Rubber Pillow Blocks for AEL/AS type bearings with a Cylindrical O.D. as the self alignment is taken up by the rubber. RS Rubber two bolt Pillow Block RBG Re-lubricateable Rubber two bolt Pillow Block A metal strap can be added for greater rigidity, in which case a "U" is added to the part number. EG. RSU. An earthing spring is supplied with these housings. LESSON A9015 Wide Inner Ring Bearings and Housings Series 90 Training page 13

LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 2

SPLIT PLUMMER BLOCKS AND SOLID HOUSINGS These housings are manufactured from a high grade cast iron which has proven adequate in the majority of situations. However, in the case where severe stressing is encountered, the housings can be supplied to order in alternate materials such as S.G. Iron or Cast Steel (see 'Materials' Below). They are normally fitted with Self-aligning Ball Bearings or Self-aligning Spherical Roller bearings. Mounting of these bearings on to a shaft can be either by press fit or by means of a tapered sleeve and this is discussed later in this lesson. We shall first discuss Split Plummer Block Housings. These housings are named after the inventor, Mr. Plummer, an English engineer. The housings can be "split" into two halves, a top and a bottom half, for ease of assembly. We currently stock a range of four patterns: SN 500 series - Normal duty SN 600 series - Heavy duty SD 3100 series - Large blocks SNG 500/600 series - Normal/heavy duty All four series are normally grease lubricated but can be converted to oil lubrication if required. Both the SN 500 and the SN 600 series are stocked with "Felt in Groove" sealing but can be modified to take other types of sealing required. The SN 500 series range from 3/4" (20mm) shaft size to 5-1/2"(140mm) shaft size. The SN 600 series range from 3/4" (20mm) shaft size to 5¼"(140mm) shaft size. The SN 500 and SN 600 series can take both self-aligning ball bearings and self-aligning roller bearings. Refer to either the BSC Plummer Blocks and Solid Housings catalogue or the TBC Housings catalogue for the range of bearings that will fit in these housings. SN Type Housing LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 3

The "SD" housing is similar in appearance to the "SN" housing except it has four cap bolts, two lifting lugs, four base holes and comes with "Triple Lip" Labyrinth sealing as standard. The SD 3100 series range from 6" (150mm) shaft size to 380mm shaft size and only take the 23100K series of self-aligning roller bearings. The number of the block is the same as the bearing number with the "2" not included, e.g. SD 3140 TSE takes a 23140K bearing and either a H3140 or HE3140 adaptor sleeve. SD Type Bearing The SNG Series, (previously referred to as SNA series) is similar top the SN and is intended to replace the conventional series. It should outperform them and allow some benefits by reduced inventory easy interchangeability; easy installation; higher load carrying capacity; higher rigidity and life cycle; and competitive pricing. SNG Type Housing The SAF type is similar to the SD type except that the holes in the base are elongated so that the unit can by moved to adjust the tension on the drive. They are designed for both grease oor oil lubrication and have substantial oil capacity and are therefore, preferred, when oil bath or oil circulation is desired. Spacer Rings Temperature changes in different materials cause varying rates of expansion and/or contraction depending on the shaft material and mounting structure (see chart below). Hence, where several bearings are located on one length of shafting it is imperative that only one of those bearings is 'located' or fixed in to position, whilst the others are able to move axially within the housing in order to cater for the linear expansion of the shaft. Spacer rings are used to "locate" a bearing in a housing. Thus, when two or more housings are installed on a shaft only one of the housings should be fitted with spacer rings, leaving the other bearings free to float. In SN 500 series housings the spacer ring or rings should be positioned on the same side of the bearing as the adaptor nut to provide the necessary internal clearance within the housing. The SD 3100 series housings are all arranged to take two spacer rings per LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 4

housing and it is important that one is placed each side of the bearing for the located housing. Spacer Ring numbering consists of the letters SR followed by the size in millimetres, E.G - SR 110 x 8. To determine if one or two rings are required it is necessary to consult the manufacturer s catalogue. Temperature Variation C Length mm Steel only foundation in the ground mm Steel on wood foundation or brick foundation mm Steel on concrete foundation mm Steel on steel mm Cap Loading Split Plummer Blocks are not suitable for high "Cap Loading" (any load that acts on the top half of the housing, above the split). Ideally, the load should be applied within the region between bolt-hole centres. Distance Between Bearings It is of the utmost importance that the span between bearings should not be too great and care should be taken to ensure that heavy drives are placed as near as possible to the bearings. An indication of the maximum suggested span is given in the following table: mm mm mm mm mm mm mm Shaft Diameter Centre Distance Shaft Diameter Centre Distance Shaft Diameter Centre Distance LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 5

SOLID HOUSINGS These housings are described as 'Solid' housings because they are cast in one piece and therefore cannot be split into two halves for assembly and servicing. The bearings are inserted via a bolt-on side plate or cap. WB SERIES These are solid housings with two caps, one on each side, arranged for "Felt Groove" sealing on the shaft and are normally grease lubricated. The stock housings can be reworked to accommodate different sealing arrangements or lubrication arrangements. They are considered suitable for heavy duty applications where shock loading and vibration are present. SB 500 SERIES These were designed by BSC in the early 1930's and later copied by other manufacturers. They are solid housings designed principally for use in the timber industry on saw bench spindles, hence the code "SB". They have a low profile, so that only the minimum of space is required under the saw bench table. This permits the maximum possible saw blade protrusion or stand out through the slot in the table, which is considered essential to good timber sawing practice. The SB 500 series housings have a cap on one side and are generally used with grease lubrication and "Felt in Groove" sealing. Located housings (only one per shaft) must have the spacer ring or rings on the same side as the adaptor nut. FC 500 SERIES These are solid flanged cartridge housings arranged with four holding down bolts. They have a bolt on cap and are generally used with grease lubrication and "Felt in Groove sealing. They are suitable for the support of shafting which is perpendicular to the mounting surface. LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 6

TH 500 SERIES These are solid take-up housings, used to tension conveyor belts, or any similar end use, where a housing is desired that will slide on ways made from black rolled steel sections, by either pulling or pushing on the pin through the pair of drilled lugs on the housing. They are fitted with a blind cap one side and an open cap the other side as standard. An open cap can be supplied instead of the blind cap if the shaft is required to pass through the housing. Sealing is "Felt in Groove" and grease lubrication is normal. See the BSC catalogue for details on these housings. RFS 500 and CFCN series RFS 500 Series is a 4 hole squarish flanged housing which, because of its spigot flanged design, can be accurately positioned in a machined recess. It is suitable for adaptor sleeve mounted bearings. CFCN heavy duty housings are round spigot flanged design with 6 bolt holes. They have a compact design and are suitable for parallel bore bearings. Holding Down Bolts Bearing Service do not supply Holding Down Bolts with any of our Transmission Bearing Equipment. However, all bolts required to secure bolt-on caps and covers are included with the housing. LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 7

Housing Material All our standard transmission housings are manufactured in high grade cast iron which has proved more than adequate in the majority of cases, However, in cases where severe stressing is encountered, the housings can be supplied in alternate materials. Some examples are: S.G. Cast Iron (Spheroidal Graphite) Cast Steel. Plummer Blocks can also be supplied with a solid un-drilled base to permit the customer to use fitted bolts where accuracy of location is required. The solid section also adds strength to the base. Shafting Customers sometimes ask us to supply steel shafting and we can buy this in to customers specific requirements. The grades usually in demand are Commercial Grade and precision Ground Bright Steel Shafting. Commercial Grade Bright Steel Shafting This Shafting is manufactured to British and Australian standards and is always undersize on it's nominal dimension and never oversize. Sizes around 3/4 inch and one inch are nominal (exact) to minus 0.002" and 3 inch is about nominal to minus 0.006". This size specification is suitable for adaptor Bearings. It is also suitable for Wide inner ring bearings (see lesson A9015) and Cooper Split Roller bearings (see lesson A9017) providing shaft speed is slow. For higher speeds, precision ground shafting should be used. Precision Ground Bright Steel Shafting This is slightly more expensive than commercial grade shafting and has a tighter control on the diameter tolerances. For shafting up to 25mm diameter it is normally from Nominal to minus 0.005mm and between 75mm and 100mm diameter it is Nominal to minus 0.051mm For high speed and accurate running, this is the shafting tolerance specified as suitable for wide Inner Ring and Cooper Split Roller Bearings. LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 8

LUBRICATION Most adaptor type ball and roller bearings are grease lubricated when fitted into Plummer Blocks or Solid Housings. This is because grease lubrication offers a minimum of sealing and maintenance requirements. When filling a bearing and housing with grease a good general rule is to completely fill the bearing and half fill the balance of the space in the housing but modify this "Rule of Thumb" for operating speed as below. High Speed Bearings Medium Speed Bearings Slow Speed Bearings Reduce volume of fill to 1/3 of total inside space and repack the bearing frequently to this volume 1/2 to 3/4 of all inside space is the normal volume of fill Full pack fill with grease is acceptable. Over filling a bearing with grease at Medium or High speed duty will cause the grease to churn and this causes over heating and can shorten the bearing life. An alternative to grease lubrication is Oil Lubrication. Various methods exist for feeding the oil to the active bearing surface including splash lubrication, circulating oil and oil mist. It is generally considered that the oil level should be up to the centre of the lowest rolling element when the bearing is at rest. An additional benefit of oil lubrication is that heat is carried away from the bearing and housing surfaces. LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 9

SEALING The sealing of housings is necessary and in many cases essential for the retention of lubricating grease and exclusion of foreign material. A range of different sealing arrangements is available to suit various applications and the choice will depend on speed, environment, available space and preferred lubrication method. Standard practice is to quote limiting speed in Meters per second and this refers to the speed at which a point on the seal passes over the shaft during rotation. Thus to convert meters per second to revolutions per minute you need to use the following formula: MAX RPM = Limiting speed x Shaft size x π where the limiting speed is expressed in meters per second and the shaft size in millimetres. TC FELT SEAL This is the standard sealing method for SN type housings used in normal conditions. The limiting speed is 3-4 metres per second. 'Z' SEAL Wiping lip increases protection for non-abrasive environment and fits into the standard felt groove. Limiting speed metres per second. Z-seals are held in stock under part numbers like ZF. ZF11 which will fit an SN511 EM housing TS SEAL Vertical labyrinth non-contact seal for abrasive environment. No limiting speed. Available on split type housings only. This type of sealing is supplied as standard on SD and SSN housings. LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 10

TS TAC SEAL Taconite combination wiping lip and labyrinth for extreme conditions. Grease purging of the labyrinth seal is provided. Limiting speed meters per second. This sealing is available on SD and SSN plummer blocks or special applications only. LS SEAL Horizontal labyrinth seal non-contact for abrasive environments No limiting speed. Available on non-split housings only and supplied only on special request. LS TAC SEAL Taconite combination wiping lip and labyrinth for extreme conditions. The grease nipple is provided to allow purging of the labyrinth seal whilst the oil seal prevents contamination of the bearing grease. This sealing is available on solid (non-split) housings - on request only. When ordering the TS, TS TAC, LS or LS TAC seals it is necessary to indicate either imperial or metric type and this is achieved by adding E or M to the part number - E.G. TSE or TSM TS TAC E or TS TAC M LSE or LSM LS TCE E or LS TAC M LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 11

SNA Housing Sealing In the case of SNA housings, a variety of different sealing methods is available. All the sealing methods described on this page are for SNA housings. The SNA housing is supplied with a standard sealing groove which is used in all of the sealing methods, thus re-working of the housing is avoided. TSNA SEAL - C type This is the SNA version of the standard SN felt seal. The felt is held in a metal ring which is inserted into the standard groove. An O-ring prevents the seal from rotating in the housing. This type of sealing is not a normal stocking line but is available to special order. Part numbers - TSNA C TSNA SEAL - A type This type of seal has a face wiping lip which improves protection for non-abrasive environments. The limiting speed is 8 to 10 meters per second. This type of sealing is sometimes referred to as A type sealing because of the part number - E.G. TSNA A TSNA SEAL (G type) The G seal is a solid nitrile rubber seal and is supplied split into two halves for ease of assembly. The special design ensures that the seal remains stationary in the housing whilst a double lip provides maximum sealing capacity on the shaft. This type of seal is sometimes referred to as a U-LOCK type seal. Part numbers are TSNA GE (Imperial) or TSNA G (Metric). TSU Seal The TSU type seal is a non-contact vertical labyrinth type for abrasive environments and has no limiting speed. An O-ring prevents the seal from rotating on the shaft. TS TAC SEAL This is a combination of V-ring and TS triple labyrinth sealing with a facility for purging the labyrinth seal. Suitable for extreme conditions, the V ring prevents contamination of the bearing grease. The O ring prevents the outer section from rotating within the housing. The limiting speed for this type of housing is 8 to 10 metres per second. Whilst the selection of sealing methods is often left to the customer, a recommendation may sometimes be requested. If you are doubtful of the best choice, consult your state engineer or sales manager for further advice. LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 12

Blanking Plates Blanking plates or end plates are used where the housing is at the end of a shaft and the shaft does not extend through to the other side of the housing. Thus, leaving the hole exposed on the other side of the housing would allow the lubricating grease to escape and dirt to enter the bearing. The Blanking plate fits into the grooves provided for the seal and completely closes off the hole. Part numbers begin with the letters BP, thus BP 10 Plug would fit a SN 510 EM Housing. For SNA housings the blanking plates are part numbered ATA 510 for the SNA 510/607 Housing. LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 13

METHODS OF MOUNTING BEARINGS In lesson 11 we discussed the methods of securing a bearing on to a shaft. In a later lesson we will be discussing the fitting of bearings in more detail but here we will expand on the various methods. On page 1, we discussed fixed and floating Bearings and the need to allow for expansion and contraction of the shaft. The movement resulting from expansion occurs within the housing between the outer ring of the bearing and the housing inner surface so that the bearing needs to be located on the shaft regardless of whether the unit is fixed or floating There are three methods of 'locating' the bearing on the shaft: Pressed fit method Adaptor Sleeve Withdrawal Sleeve. Pressed Fit Mounting For press fit mounting, parallel bore bearings are required and these are mounted directly onto the shaft by using a hydraulic press or arbour press. It is essential that the pressure is applied to the inner ring by the use of a tubular drift (a hollow tube). Any attempt to apply pressure to the outer ring when fitting the bearing onto the shaft will cause internal damage to the bearing, thus shortening its service life. Sometimes it may be necessary to press fit the bearing into the housing and in this case the pressure should be applied to the outer ring. The bearing is usually located against a shaft shoulder on one side and retained by a sleeve or a nut on the other Adaptor sleeves Adaptor Sleeves consist of three parts: Split Steel Sleeve Locking Washer Locknut Sleeve mounting permits more relaxed shaft diameter tolerances and makes the mounting of larger bearings an easier task. Very large bearings are very often mounted on Hydraulic Adaptor Sleeves (sleeves that incorporate oil ducts and oil pump connections). Adaptor Sleeves are used in conjunction with tapered bore bearings and serve the dual purpose of locating the inner ring on the shaft and also allowing a bearing to suit different shaft sizes (metric or imperial). LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 14

Adaptor Sleeve Numbering System When an Adaptor Sleeve is fitted to a bearing the shaft size has to be reduced to take the thickness of the adaptor sleeve. for example, a 2210 bearing takes a shaft of 50mm (10 x 5) but a 2210k bearing fitted with a H310 Adaptor Sleeve takes a shaft of 45mm. In other words a bearing fitted with an adaptor sleeve takes a standard shaft size one step down from the same bearing without an adaptor sleeve. ADAPTOR SLEEVE H2 - - H3 - - Adaptor Sleeves come in five series to suit different series of bearings. Listed below are the five series and the Self-Aligning Ball and Roller bearings that are suited to each of the series: BEARING SERIES K K, K, K, K,(TO 100MM, 4" SHAFT.) H K, K, H H K K, (FROM 110MM,4-1/4 shaft), K If the shaft is Imperial then an "E" is added to the number immediately after the "H", i.e. HE310. Besides the "H", "HE" series NSK also make an "HS" and a "HA" series. These two series are made up for imperial shafting only and other than the bore size are dimensionally the same as the "HE" series. Refer to NSK BEARING ACCESSORIES AND BALLS AND ROLLERS catalogue Pr. No for dimensions. Hydraulic Adaptor Sleeves have the suffix "HG" after the number. LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 15

Withdrawal Sleeves These are similar to Adaptor Sleeve but the bearing rests against a shaft shoulder. The tapered sleeve is pressed into the bearing bore until the radial clearance is reduced to the desired amount. This is not a popular method of attaching the bearing to the shaft. Our sales of adaptor sleeves are many times greater than sales of withdrawal sleeves. For dismounting the bearing, the sleeve is extracted by the extraction nut. Withdrawal sleeves are identified by the prefix "AH" or "AHX" followed by the series number thus:- AHX - - AH AH AH AH AH AHX3 - - AHX AHX AHX AHX The rest of the part number is the same as for Adaptor sleeves. Note that, unlike adaptor sleeves, the nut is not supplied and that the part number refers to the sleeve only. Hydraulic Withdrawal sleeves have the suffix "H" after the part number. LESSON A9016 Split Plummer Blocks, Solid Housings and Sleeves Series 90 Training page 16

Locknuts Locknuts are available as separate items and have part numbers like AN05. For H2 - -, H 3 - -, and H The numbering system is based upon standard ISO numbering, thus the AN05 nut would be suitable for an adaptor sleeve fitted to a 25mm ID bearing. (Remember that the actual shaft size is smaller than the bearing ID to allow for the space taken by the adaptor sleeve, thus the 25mm bearing would be mounted on a 20mm shaft). For H series the part number commences with ANL (e.g. ANL 24). The same nuts are used as extracting nuts for withdrawal sleeves, however, a larger size larger nut is required. Check the NSK catalogue to determine the correct nut size. Lock-Washers Lock-Washers are available as replacements and should always be fitted on re-assembly if the tabs on the old washer show signs of wear. The part numbers commence with AW and are thereafter the same as Locknuts E.G. AW 05 fits a 25 mm ID Bearing mounted on a 20mm shaft. 42 LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 2

Introduction The company Cooper Roller Bearings Co. Ltd. owes its name to Mr. Thomas Cooper, a highly inventive engineer who formed a company at King's Lynn, England, to manufacture steam traction engines in He invented the world's first split roller bearing to reduce friction in traction engine road wheels. After several million dollars worth of development - and countless millions of bearings the Cooper Split Roller Bearing stands today as a unique example of British engineering design. Cooper Split roller Bearings are made in sizes from 30mm (1-1/4") to 600 mm (24") bore in three standard ranges, complete with choice of mountings. Special split bearings up to 1550mm bore are regularly produced, together with steel converter bearings of 1.50m bore. Some of their bearings for steel converters carry a load of over 100 tons and weigh, complete with mounting, nearly 3 tons each. The largest bearings they have made so far are of 2285mm (90 INCH) bore for use on control mechanisms at Berkeley nuclear power station in England As you already know, all ball and roller bearings have three main parts: inner race, outer race, and rolling elements (ball or rollers) usually contained within a separating cage. The special and unique feature of the patented Cooper Split Roller Bearing is that the races and cage (and associated outer housings) are all manufactured in halves - so it can be fitted easily on a shaft exactly where required. This saves a tremendous amount of time at assembly and during maintenance as the bearing does not have to be threaded along the shaft, and pulleys, gear wheels etc, already installed do not have to be moved.. Bearing inspection could not be simpler or quicker - the rollers and cage are exposed by just removing the "top half" of the pedestal and cartridge. LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 3

Bearing Series The bearings are manufactured in three standard series as follows: "01" (Previously medium series) "02" (Previously heavy series) "03" (Previously extra heavy series) In addition, Cooper manufacture specialised series such as: 04 range for wire stranding machines EL range for electric motors Flat thrust bearings - both split and solid Converter trunnion bearings Cross roll bearings Split Bearing Components The complete Cooper Split Roller Bearing consists of three separate parts - The bearing itself, the cartridge and the Housing or cartridge holder. Cooper use the following letters to distinguish bearings, cartridges and cartridge holders:- "B" Bearing "C" Swivel Cartridge "P" Pedestal "F" Flange "TP" Take-up (push type) "TT" Take-up (tension type) "H" Hanger Units "RES" Rod End (shoe type) "RET" Rod End (tee type) We will now discuss each of these in turn. LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 4

Bearings The bearings are of the cylindrical roller type and either expansion type (floating) to take up expansion of the shaft in service or of the grooved race type with two lips on the outer bearing ring to make a fixed or located mounting. The inner ring consists of two half pieces which, when placed together on the shaft, make the complete inner ring. The two pieces are held in place by two clamps affixed with socket head (Allen key) screws. Both the inner and outer raceways have angled joints to ensure continuity of contact with the rollers. The two clamps also serve to retain the rollers in their correct path. The GR or Grooved Race type of bearing is shown here. The combination of inner ring clamps and lips on the outer raceway ensure that the rollers are fixed axially, thus making the assembled bearing a fixed type bearing. The EX or Expansion type of bearing is shown to the left. There are no lands (or lips) on the outer ring, thus allowing the rollers to float on the outer raceway as the shaft expands and contracts. In other words, the inner race and shaft have axial freedom. For metric bearings, the bearing number is made up of the shaft size in millimetres followed by the letters "mm". EG. 75mm shaft - bearing number 75mm If the shaft is imperial then the bearing number is made up of whole inches followed by fractions shown as 16ths of an inch. EG. 2-1/4" shaft - Bearing number 204 The letters "EX" are added to the bearing number if the bearing is the Expansion type. The letters "GR" are added to the bearing number if the bearing is of the Grooved Race (fixed) type. LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 5

Thus a complete bearing number is as shown below:- An explanation of this number is: 01 B 204 EX 01- series, B- bearing, suits 2-1/4" shaft, EX- Expansion type. Cartridges Cooper cartridges have a rounded outer surface which mates up with the housing into which they fit. This is to enable them to take up initial misalignment. They are called Swivel Cartridges and are identified by the letter "C". The cartridges are either suited for "EX" bearings or "GR" bearings. The GR type has holes drilled axially, around the edge into which side rods and screws (item C in the diagram above) are fitted. These are tightened to prevent rotary and axial movement of the outer raceway and to align the joints of the outer ring halves correctly. On large sizes, radial hold back screws are used to seat the outer rings in the cartridge. This is shown as item D in the diagram above. All cartridges are fitted with a grease nipple and internal channels to take the grease to the bearing. LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 6

Sealing Various sealing methods are available and each has a particular use. The types of seals and the cartridges they fit are listed below together with the main reasons for their selection. Triple Labyrinth Seals In Triple labyrinth style, the 01 and 02 series cartridges are designed in such a way that one cartridge will fit a number of shaft sizes, both Imperial and Metric, within a series, thus reducing the number of different sized cartridges which would have to be manufactured and carried in stock. The 03 series cartridges do not have this feature but are manufactured to suit each individual bearing size. The Neoprene Triple Labyrinth (NTL) seals are only produced up to, and including, 4" (100mm) shaft size. After this the seal is an "ATL" (Aluminium triple Labyrinth) seal. The numbering system for triple labyrinth seal cartridge is based upon the pedestal number and it is necessary to refer to a chart to determine the correct number. The chart is reproduced as appendix A. An example of the cartridge number is: 01 C 4 EX Where Series C - Cartridge 4 - Pedestal Number. EX - Expansion type. Felt Seals Felt sealed cartridges are manufactured to suit individual shaft sizes and therefore a much larger range needs to be carried to cater for all possible shaft sizes. The numbering system of the felt sealed cartridge followed the bearings exactly except a "C" is used instead of a "B", thus:- 01 C 204 EX 01 - series C - cartridge suits 2-1/4"shaft EX - expansion type LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 7

It should be noted that with Cooper there is a price advantage with the Felt type seal. Seal Type Felt SRS Synthetic Rubber lip seal Triple Labyrinth (TL) NTL(Rubber) ATL (Aluminium) Grease Groove Main Application Slow to medium speed for clean and dusty applications Slow to medium speed - will exclude moisture Medium speed Non rubbing contact For clean or dirty conditions High speed non rubbing contact for clean or dirty conditions Standard over 300mm shaft diameter and for marine applications Typical Cartridge Designation 01C 204 EX 01C4 EX 01C 300mm EX Hanger Type Unit Besides swivel cartridges, Cooper also make a Hanger type housing which they identify by the letter "H". Refer to the Cooper catalogue for information on these Double Sealed Housings. Cartridge Holders (outer housings) The bearing and cartridge are fixed in position by means of a cartridge holder or outer housing. Cooper produce six main types-:- PEDESTAL TYPE "P" FLANGE TYPE "F" TAKE-UP TYPE "TP"(Push Type) "TT"(Tension Type) ROD END TYPE "RES"(Shoe Type) "RET"(Tee type) LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 8

We only carry the "P" pedestal type and "F" flange type as a stock line as they are by far the most popular. 01 Series 02 Series 03 Series 2 bolt Base BCP 4 Bolt Base BCP 4 Bolt BCP Large Bore Base 1-3/16" to 4-1/2" 35mm to 115mm 5" to 6" 120mm to 155mm 2" to 6" 50mm to 155mm 110mm to 150mm - 160mm to 560 mm - 160mm to 260mm mm to 220mm 240mm to 260mm Available in cast iron, ductile iron or steel Available in cast iron, ductile iron or steel Available in ductile iron Available in cast iron, ductile iron or steel Flange Unit BCF Take-up BCT Rod End Shoe Type BCRE Hanger BH 01 Series 1-3/16" to 12" 40mm to 300mm 1-3/16" to 12" 40mm to 300mm 1-3/16" to 6" 40mm to 155mm 40mm to 115mm 02 Series 2" to 12" 50mm to 300mm 2" to 12" 50mm to 300mm Available in cast iron, ductile iron or steel Available in cast iron, ductile iron or steel A point to note is that Cooper pedestals are designed to the I.S.O. metric size so that they interchange exactly with our plummer block SN500 series up to 4" shaft diameter (except for SN510, SN512 and SN518). This means that a shaft can have a mix of both Cooper Splits and SN500 housings. Cooper did make a series of pedestals called "H2" series that were not to the I.S.O. metric size. If you are asked to replace a pedestal you should check the centre height to ensure you supply the correct pedestal. LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 9

Handling Misalignment A feature of the cooper bearings is the ability to handle misalignment within the housing, unlike the spherical roller bearing, where misalignment is handled within the running surfaces of the bearing itself. The outer surface of the cartridge has a spherical surface which matches up with the interior surface of the pedestal. Cartridge and mounting units are designed to handle up to 2-1/2 degrees of misalignment. 51 Complete Unit numbers Where a complete unit is required the part numbers can be combined as follows: 01 BCP 308 GR This unit would include the 01 series bearing, cartridge (Felt Sealing) and pedestal to suit a 3-1/2" shaft in GR (Fixed) style. Tables of basic numbers for bearings, cartridges and pedestals are included as Appendices A and B. Note also that some catalogues may show the part numbers as EBCP. The E indicates extended capacity. BSC has standardised on this type but does not include the E in the part number on the AS400. Blanking Plates Where the Cooper bearing is mounted at the end of a shaft, blanking plates may be fitted to prevent ingress of foreign matter and for safety reasons. These plates fit standard cartridges in pedestals, flanges or take-up housings. Non Standard Features Various non-standard features can be incorporated with bearings, cartridges and/or housings, depending upon the intended application. 53 Some important notes about Cooper split bearings: 1) The correct shaft limits on diameter are important. 2) Parts of Bearings and Housings should not be interchanged. The parts of one bearing are mated to run as a unit, as are the two parts of each swivel cartridge and pedestal. 3) Ensure all pairing marks coincide. 4) Lightly lubricate threads and mating surfaces with "BR2+" grease or "G" paste. 5) Fully tighten inner bearing half races onto shaft, tap to seat to catalogue instructions and re-tighten. 6) Lubricate with grease of the type and volume indicated in the catalogue before closing cartridge. 7) Safeguard rolling surfaces with suitable packing while bearings are in transit. 8) Keep the parts clean and dry with regard to moisture. 9) Lubricate spherical seating with MolyKote "G" plus paste or "BR2+" grease. 10) To assist the take-up of any misalignment when mounting Cooper units always tighten the Pedestal to the base plate holding down bolts before tightening the cap to the pedestal body. Rotate shaft before cap bolts are finally tightened. SNC Product Line The housings have bolt hole centre distances and base to bearing centreline heights that conform to ISO Complete SNC assemblies are suitable for replacement of solid, self aligning ball bearings and, in most cases 222 Series double row spherical bearings, using adaptor sleeves. The Cooper SN compatible pedestal is available for bearings with shaft sizes from 2 1/4 (60mm) (SN513) to 5 1/2 (140mm) (SN532). The pedestals use standard Cooper 01 Series bearings and cartridges. This gives the option of using the comprehensive range of Cooper sealing options suitable for almost any application. The seals remain concentric to the shaft under misalignment conditions. The use of standard Cooper bearings and cartridges will cause the footprint area and total housing height to differ from compatible SN housings. Pedestals are made from grey cast iron. Temperature and vibration mounting points may be specified. LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 13

SDC Product line The housings have bolt hole centre distances and base to bearing centreline heights that conform to industry standard SD dimensions. The Cooper SD compatible unit is available for shaft sizes from 150mm (SD3134) to 300mm (SD3164). Cooper 01 Series SDC Pedestals are manufactured from ductile iron castings. The innovative 08SDC series offers the benefit of a split to shaft bearing for heavy duty applications requiring a compact bearing envelope. For lighter loads the standard Cooper 01 series bearing and cartridge is available in pedestals to SD dimensions. Temperature and vibration sensor mounting points may be specified. Overall housing height may differ from the height of equivalent SD units. Cooper 08 Series SDC Lubrication Grease lubrication is usually satisfactory up to the normal maximum speeds shown in our Product Catalogue, subject to temperature and axial loads. We recommend (up to 100C) the use of a good quality lithium based grease with extreme pressure (EP) additives i.e. EP2 or equivalent. Greases with extreme pressure additives (EP) are advantageous, especially for high radial or axial loads. The permitted axial load on a (GR) fixed bearing is reduced by 50% if an EP grease is not used. For extreme temperatures, speeds and high loads it is always advisable to obtain recommendations from our technical department. Greases of No 2 consistency can generally be used for most applications and are also suitable for most pumped systems. LESSON A9017 Cooper Split Roller Bearings Series 90 Training page 14

Selling Cooper This is the sheet used by our sales staff to promote Cooper Bearings. It lists the 10 major features and the advantages to the customer. Since split roller bearings are still unique, customers tend to ask more questions about them. Some common questions and answers are as follows: Questions Q. Is the shaft size important to the operation of a Cooper bearing? Q. Why is there a gap between the inner race halves? Q. How do the rollers pass over the gap without becoming damaged? Q. Does the gap affect the speed or life of the bearing? Q. When the inner race is assembled on the shaft, where should the gap be? Q. How do the dimensions of a Cooper housing compare with those of an SN unit? Q. Is the positioning of the clamping rings important? Q. How much should the clamping ring screws be tightened? Answers A. The shaft diameter should be checked for size and roundness prior to fitting the bearing. If the bearing is to be run at high speeds with heavy loads then the tolerances shown in the catalogue should be used. However, for normal applications such as fans, conveyers etc., standard bright mild steel shafting tolerances are acceptable. A. The gap is a feature of the Cooper Split Roller Bearing and is there to make sure that the inner race is gripping the shaft. If there were no gap then the race might slip on the shaft. A. The split is at an angle to the centre line of the shaft - not straight across, so that 90% of the roller is always supported by the race and there is no vibration or noise. A. No. A Cooper bearing has a higher speed rating than the equivalent spherical roller bearing and there are some applications where a Cooper has been running for 30 years and is still going strong. A. There should be approximately equal gaps at both joints of the clamping ring and races. A. The bolt hole centres and shaft height centres of the 01 series are the same as the SN 500 range of plummer blocks up to 4 inch (100mm) shaft diameter, with the exception of the SN510, SN512 and SN 518. Excepting those sizes the Cooper will replace the SN without any modifications. A. Clamping ring joints should be fitted at about 90 degrees to the inner race joint A. These should be tightened as much as possible, in fact, as tight as practical without bending the allen key. For high speed or high load applications use the torque values shown in the catalogue. 63 10 good reasons to fit Cooper split Roller Bearings 1. All Components of the bearing are split axially in two places so the bearing and the housing are fitted to the shaft radially. 2. All internal wearing surfaces of the bearing can be inspected using only a socket head screw key and without disturbing any of the components which may be mounted along the shaft. Advantage Advantage This permits the bearing to be fitted to the shaft without disturbing other components which may be mounted on the shaft between the bearing and the shaft end. This ability to inspect the bearing makes it possible for its replacement to be planned by observing the rate at which the bearing is fatiguing. 3. The only tool required are two sizes of socket head screw keys, a hardwood block and hammer or resin hammer. 4. Dimensionally interchangeable with SN type housings. 5. The inner race is clamped to the shaft and does not rely on a tapered adaptor sleeve to obtain the necessary fit on the shaft. Advantage Advantage Advantage No expensive or special equipment, such as hydraulic pumps and hydraulic nuts are needed. Minimum time of assembly and disassembly is achieved. In difficult, inaccessible locations when it is necessary to replace the bearing in an SN housing, this can be achieved with a Cooper split roller bearing without the shaft being disturbed. This is because the base to centre line and bolt centres are the same for both types. The correct internal running clearance of the bearing is assured because the risk of expanding the inner race excessively and so removing the necessary diametrical clearance is eliminated. Also removed is the risk of the bearing being left loose on the shaft because no longer is there a dependence on the tapered sleeve being adjusted correctly into the bearing but by simple measurement of the shaft, the correct fit is assured. 64 10 good reasons to fit Cooper split Roller Bearings (cont.) 6. The expansion or floating of the shaft is accommodated within the bearing and this does not rely on the outer race of the bearing sliding within the housing. 7 The self aligning feature is provided between the OD of the cartridge and the ID of the Pedestal ensuring uniform, consistent and so minimal clearance between the shaft and the housing. 8. The bearing and shaft can be lifted away from the pedestal without exposing the bearing. 9. The bearing is made up of six major components. 10. The position of the inner race relative to the outer race of the locating bearing is always consistent. Advantage Advantage Advantage Advantage Advantage Excessive axial loading resulting from the resistance of the bearing to move axially within the housing is eliminated, so removing unnecessary load on the locating bearing which in turn increases operating life. The sealing of the bearing is more effective which improves the bearing life through reduced ingress of foreign matter to the bearing. This sub-assembly can be removed without the bearing being exposed so that it is kept clean while work is being carried out on the other parts of this sub-assembly. By keeping the bearing clean, it's life is significantly extended. As each of these components are fitted separately, the weight of the largest of these six components is much less than the solid bearing. This makes for easier handling and may completely eliminate the need for lifting tackle which would be necessary in the case of a solid bearing. By fitting Cooper bearing to a grooved portion of the shaft, it is possible to guarantee consistent and precise location of the shaft relative to the framework on which the housing is mounted. 69 BLUE BRUTE MANUFACTURED BY QM BEARINGS Introduction QM Bearings are located in British Columbia, Canada. They are a privately owned company and have been operating for over 50 years. Blue Brute roller bearings represents decades of bearing technology and utilise world leading design for heavy duty applications. Due to the number and size of the two rows of symmetrical barrel shaped rollers combined with precision guiding they have extreme load and speed capacity. The two types of bearing insert that BSC stock are the ECCENTRIC LOCK (EC) and the TAPERED ADAPTOR LOCK (TA). These bearings are manufactured by Torrington to QM specifications. Blue Brute also offers a SET SCREW LOCK (CL) series. BSC however, will not be stocking this item as this series only accepts light thrust loads. The EC series (eccentric lock) accepts heavy thrust loads and is a far superior locking device. Blue Brute bearings work to full capacity regardless of the limited shaft and housing misalignment. Blue Brute bearings allow misalignment in any direction up to 2 degrees from centre. The Blue Brute rollers align freely between the spherical outer and inner ring and contact at an angle allowing heavy radial and thrust loads in either direction. Crowned roller ends result in unaffected performance under dynamic static or oscillatory conditions with heavy loads in a combination of planes. LESSON A9049 Blue Brute Bearings Series 90 Training page 3

Advantages Competitively priced Lifetime guarantee on housing Cast steel housing Eccentric locking collar for easy installation Different sealing configurations Dimensional interchangeability with other roller bearing units on the market. Bearing Types The two different types of bearings that BSC will be stocking are outlined below. ECCENTRIC LOCK (EC) EC Eccentric Lock EC Series Eccentric Locking Collar EC Pillow Block SERIES Accepts heavy thrust loads Unsurpassed holding in heavy thrust, reversing or shock loading. Guaranteed, this bearing will not come loose if installed correctly EC Piloted Flange Cartridge EC Flange Block EC Take-Up Units TAPERED ADAPTOR LOCK (TA) TA - Tapered Adapter Lock TA Series - Tapered Adapter Sleeve Accepts medium thrust loads SERIES TA Pillow Block TA Piloted Flange Cartridge TA Bearings are a direct drop in replacement for SN/SNG split cap TA Flange Block housing dimensions, resulting in superior sealing and an integral robust housing. Best concentricity for high speeds. LESSON A9049 Blue Brute Bearings Series 90 Training page 4

SEALS Sealing arrangements Blue Brute bearings are offered with a large number of primary and secondary sealing options. We assemble our bearings to order and different combinations of seals can be installed easily from stock. Primary Seals These seals are installed between the inner race of the bearing and the housing. They are held securely in place by our assembly nut. Primary seals can be contacting or noncontacting, purging or non-purging and are available in several material compounds for different applications. Secondary Seals In many applications, the failure of the bearing is a result of contamination and primary seal failure. The primary seal failure could be caused by conditions the bearing is running in or by over lubrication. QM offers snap on urethane secondary seals and covers that are easily installed in the field and provide superior sealing to the bearing assembly. Primary Seal style Seal Description Standard Seal - M Contacting, self purging EX STOCK AUSTRALIA This seal is a triple lip seal, light to medium contact. The M seal offers superior sealing in moisture and dirty applications. (Part number example M10) MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE -100 C Double Lip Seal - B Contacting, non-purging EX STOCK AUSTRALIA This seal incorporates a double lip seal of nitrile rubber with a garter spring for maximum contact. It is complete with a heavy duty steel shield that protects the seal from larger pieces of debris that might damage the rubber seal. Designed for extreme moisture, fine dust or extreme dirt conditions. (Part number example B09) MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE C Teflon Seal - T non-contacting, non-purging EX STOCK AUSTRALIA The Teflon floating seal consists of a Teflon ring pressed onto the inner race of the bearing. This Teflon ring floats between two pieces of formed steel. Will suit high speed and high temperatures. (Part number example T20) MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE 260 C LESSON A9049 Blue Brute Bearings Series 90 Training page 7

Primary Seal style Seal Description Double Lip Seal C Contacting, non-purging This is the same seal as the B seal except it is manufactured with our QMFE seal material. The QMFE fluoroelastomer has excellent chemical and abrasion resistant and operates at higher temperatures than our standard nitrile seal. MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE 200 C Triple lip seal - N Contacting, self purging This seal is a triple lip seal, light to medium contact. The N seal is made with our new QMFE material. The QMFE fluoroelastomer has excellent chemical and abrasion resistant and operates at higher temperatures than our standard nitrile rubber seal. MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE 200 C Optional Secondary Seal style Seal Description Optional CS - Closed End Cover EX STOCK AUSTRALIA This snap on cover is made from an almost indestructible urethane and yet is easily snapped into place. The cover completely seals the bearing preventing contamination from reaching the primary seal. The created cavity is filled with lubrication with installed grease fitting for additional protection. To order closed end cover, simply pick the size from the bearing size in the part number. E.g. Bearing size QMP18J307S closed end part number CS18 Optional CJ - Open End Cover EX STOCK AUSTRALIA This snap on cover is made from an almost indestructible urethane for repeated use. A triple lip seal made from nitrile rubber attaches to the open end cover. This triple lip seal can move within the opening to accommodate misalignment while maintaining full contact to the shaft for positive sealing. A grease fitting is fitted to the cover to enable the cavity to be filled with grease. The DR or VR seal can be purchased separately. To order an open end cover with DR seal, you require the bearing size and shaft diameter. E.g. Bearing size QMP18J307S cover and seal number CJDR307 LESSON A9049 Blue Brute Bearings Series 90 Training page 8

Blue Brute - Bearing Ordering and Part Number Guide To provide the customer with a complete bearing unit that they have ordered, an understanding of the numbering system needs to be established. LESSON A9049 Blue Brute Bearings Series 90 Training page 9

As BSC are stocking and invoicing separate components, you will need to know the part numbers and quantity in order to make a complete unit. The break up of the complete unit is as follows:- QTY ITEM PREFIX 1 nut NU 1 bearing SLJ (EC series) or SLK (TA series) 2 seals M, T or B type 2 spacer rings CFO 1 housing QMPF, QMTU, QMCW, QMFY, QMPL, TAPN, TAPG Plus secondary seals (CS and CJ) if required For example: If a customer wants to order a complete bearing unit QMFY18J308S, you will need to order the following components. QTY ITEM PREFIX 1 nut NU18 1 bearing SLJ seals T18 or B18 or M18 2 spacer rings CF18XW 1 housing QMFY308HS REMEMBER- to assemble a complete unit, you need 1 nut, 1 bearing, 1 housing, 2 seals and 2 spacer rings. Each item will be shown on the invoice. You need to manually enter the complete bearing unit number at the bottom of the invoice for the benefit of the customer. LESSON A9049 Blue Brute Bearings Series 90 Training page 10

SIMPLIFIED BEARING INSTALLATION EC SERIES Bearing Installation guide The shaft should be free from burrs, straight, clean and within recommended shaft tolerances. Taking note of the position of the grease fitting, slide the bearing on the shaft to the desired position. If added force is required to install bearing on the shaft, use a brass drift pin and LIGHLTY tap on the inner race of bearing until in position. All pillow blocks ends are machined square to the center bore of the block, thus allowing keepers to be welded to secure the block into position (this allows a one time alignment of the bearing to the shaft). When mounting bearings into position, one bearing should serve as an anchor to locate the shaft endwise. All other bearings located on same shaft should permit the shaft to float freely endwise. To convert Blue Brute EC series bearing from fixed to expansion (floating) position: Reference the original location of the outer (fixing) nut A to the housing by marking a line across the two parts. (see diagram below) Loosen the locking Teflon Tip set screw that is securing the outer nut in position. Loosen the outer nut by tapping with hammer and punch, by rotating the outer nut in a counter clockwise direction. One complete counter revolution 360 of the outer nut from the marked position will achieve the recommended clearance. Once the bearing has the proper clearance for expansion, tighten the Teflon Tip set screw (snug, hand tight) to original position to secure the outer nut firmly in place. To convert EC bearing from expansion (floating) to fixed: Loosen locking Teflon Tip setscrew to release outer nut. Rotate the outer nut by tapping on the outer nut and rotating clockwise, until the outer nut tightens against the seal wall (snug). It is not possible to over tighten the outer nut. Tighten the Teflon Tip setscrew (snug, hand tight) to original position to firmly secure the outer nut into position. LESSON A9049 Blue Brute Bearings Series 90 Training page 11

Locking - Eccentric Locking collars After the bearing is in position and the mounting bolts are tightened, move the eccentric collar into position on the extended inner race. Using a brass drift pin and a hammer, lock the eccentric firmly in place. The collar will continue to tighten while in operation. The (2) set screws can now be tightened 1-7/16 2-1/4 maximum 225 inch lbs. of torque 2-7/16 3-1/2 maximum 540 inch lbs. of torque 3-15/16 7 maximum 1150 inch lbs. of torque EC Series locking collars will not release on reversing or high shock load applications.
