January 2017 SKH Seminar Emerging Issues Hello, I m Mike Sculthorpe, welcome to the first Emerging Issues Program of As always are recording today s program at GM World Headquarters the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. During the program today we will cover the latest service topics from Brand Quality and Engineering as well as answer questions from techs in the field. Send your questions or comments to EI@raytheon.com We do our best to answer all of our . And of course we are always interested in hearing about topics you d like to see covered in a future program. To get credit for watching this program you must pass the test. At the end of the program I ll give you instructions on how to access the test. The SC symbol in the lower right corner of the screen identifies topics that should interest Service Consultants. Please be sure to let your Service Consultants know when you find content for them in the program. First up Top Stories. TOP STORIES In the mail bag this month we have a couple of questions. The first is from Steve White at John Thornton Chevrolet who asked: In the November Emerging Issues you showed the rear spoiler that had the center section already installed. The end caps had to be installed by the dealer. This process is not just a peel and stick, it requires a special primer and sealer. There is no add time for this on the PDI. How do we pay the tech for this or where do we need to get this information. Thanks, I checked in with Ann Briedis, the Brand Quality Manager for the Camaro concerning your question and here is what she told me: The Labor Time Guide has been updated with a new add time for installing the wings on the 1LE s during PDI. Thanks for letting us know! Our next is from Rick Winslow at Crest Chevrolet in San Bernardino, California. Rick asked: What is GMs recommendation when preforming a recall, such as 3034A on a 2000 Malibu, were the trim that holds a component for the recall is broken, the replacement trim is no longer available and the existing trim is not repairable?

I asked Rick Nunez who is the Lead Technical Writer for Safety Field Investigations for help answering to your question. Here is what he said: With Safety Recalls, GM has three options: 1. Replace the defective part 2. Repair the defective part 3. Repurchase the vehicle For this issue, GM can repair or replace the defective part. The trim piece that "holds" that component is broken. The trim piece is not part of the recall and the trim piece is NOT defective. The part broke due to age or improper R & R. therefore, GM is not responsible for that part of the repair. The customer can locate an aftermarket trim piece or a used trim piece that is in good condition. GM will not pay for the trim piece but will pay for completing the recall (repairing or replacing the defective part stated in the recall). Our 3rd is from Justin Stemmler at Tuscaloosa Chevrolet in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Here is Justin s question: On the newer GM trucks, equipped with V8, our dealership has had a few complaints of a squeak / chirp type noise from the engine, while running at idle. Upon inspection, we've isolated the noise to the water pump, possibly a bearing seal to impeller shaft type of noise, is my guess. To repair this concern, water pump replacement is necessary. However, just the water pump, is not available separately, and now requires "engine coolant manifold assembly" replacement. Is there any particular reason, this has gone from, what should be a very simple "belt off, 6 bolts, swap part, belt back on, & fill coolant" repair, to a very complex repair, of removing the compressor, alternator, bracket, heater hoses, etc... It s my opinion, there is no other moving part of said coolant manifold assembly, and no other part failure. Is it really necessary to replace the manifold? Or is this just temporary, as a service water pump kit is not available, as of yet? Great question Justin. I spoke with Tracy Lucas, the Brand Quality Manager for Gen 4 small block engines and here is what he told me: GM is aware of this situation and is working to resolve it. They are working with the supplier to make the pump available separately. You should hear more on the topic in the near future. Next, we have the list of changes to available Engineering information, part restriction and exchange bulletins. PIP5360 has been ended. It covered 2016 Colorado and Canyon equipped with the 2.8 liter diesel engine, restricting the Diesel Exhaust Converter and Filter.

And PIP5439 was added, covering 2017 Silverado and Sierra with the 6.6L Duramax (RPO L5P). It announces a part restriction on the turbocharger and actuator assembly. For a complete list of these bulletins, check out the latest issue of TechLink magazine. Next, we have a heads up about a new GM safety feature. Several 2017 GM vehicles have a Rear Seat Safety feature that under certain circumstances, will remind the driver to check the back seat when they shut the vehicle off. So far, in 2016, 39 children died from heat stroke as the result of either being left in a vehicle accidently or the child climbing into an unlocked, unoccupied vehicle. This feature is offered on all of these 2017 vehicles: LaCrosse Escalade, Yukon, Tahoe and Suburban, CT6, Cruze, Malibu, Silverado Sierra, and Colorado Canyon. For 2018 model year, it will also be available on the XT5, CTS, ATS and Equinox The feature activates anytime either rear door is opened and closed, up to 10 minutes prior to starting or any time the vehicle is running. The next time the ignition is shut off, the vehicle will sound the chimes 5 times and display a DIC message reading Rear Seat Reminder / Look in Rear Seat. It will only activate once each time the ignition is turned on and then off. Reactivation requires opening and closing the second row doors. Also, the system may alert even when there is nothing in the rear seat. One example would be if a child entered the vehicle through the rear door and left the vehicle before the vehicle was shut off. Of course, the system will also alert when the vehicle is shut off even if the customer only placed a package or purse in the back seat when they opened the rear door. It does not detect objects, only rear door opening. This feature can be turned on or off using Vehicle Personalization. Refer to the owner manual under Rear Seats and Vehicle Personalization for more information. We also wanted to let you know that an adapter has been sent out to all GM dealers for the EL Inductive Charging Test Tool. The adapter comes in a plastic bag that can be used for storage of the tool after the adapter is installed. It also contains directions for installation which is quite simple. Thread the strap from the rear of the adapter, through the rectangular slot near the top. Then align the tool into the back of the adapter and press into place. The adapter should remain attached to the tester. This modification helps ensure proper operation of the tester by mimicking the size and shape of a typical phone. On vehicles with a wireless charging mat, place the tester flush to the rear of the mat as you see here. With the ignition ON, the lamps on the tester should illuminate after 2 to 3 seconds. If the lamps illuminate, the system is working properly.

On vehicles with a wireless charging pocket, the tester with adapter allows simply inserting the tester into the pocket. It will fit snugly and will align properly if fully inserted. Again, with the ignition ON, the tester should light up after 2 to 3 seconds indicating that the system is operating properly. PIC6049 provides additional information on how to diagnose wireless charging concerns. The first step is to validate that the device the customer is attempting to charge is compatible with the system. The bulletin has a list of phones, recommended covers and, if the phone has wireless charging built in. It also provides the maximum dimensions for devices to be charged. Anything larger will not set on the pad correctly and therefore may not charge reliably. Once you have validated that the phone and or case are compatible, ensure the vehicle ignition is ON or in RAP. Also remove all objects from the charging pocket or pad before attempting to charge. Coins, keys, cards, etc., trapped between the phone and the charging surface can prevent charging and may become very hot. Refer to the PI for further details. New Dealership Infrastructure Guidelines were released in December. You can review a copy a couple different ways. Currently, there is a link in Global Connect under headlines. Once you log in, select the Departments tab, and then Service. Click on the link and then open the pdf. Or, as always, you can go to gmdesolutions.com, click on the Techline IT Solutions tab and then the GM IT Standards tab. Finally, select the Click here to view guidelines link. The first table covers what is and what is not supported. Currently Windows 7 and 10 Professional 64bit are supported along with Internet Explorer bit. The next table provides the recommended guidelines for purchasing new hardware and includes minimum specs for the processor, RAM, Hard disk, network adapter and operating system. Finally, there is a table listing the minimum specs for existing computers. Anything less than these guidelines will not be supported by GM. We just looked at the headlines under service within Global Connect. Here is another topic listed there; 2017 MOE enrollment On December 1, GM messaged all dealers on the importance of enrolling in the 2017 Mark of Excellence or MOE program. Please be aware that there is NO automatic enrollment in any level of the program this year. Your dealership must enroll you. For additional program details, visit wwww.gmprograminfo.com. Then, check with your management to see if you can be enrolled for the New Year. Enrollment is open until January 31, 2017 Our last Top Story is this month s new World Class Technicians: Brian Dougherty at Karl Chevrolet in Ankeny Iowa Robert Overton at Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet Cadillac in Greenville South Carolina

James Litaker at Serra Chevrolet in Birmingham Alabama Justin Adams at Stevenson Chevrolet in Swansboro North Carolina Charles Bruno at Englewood Cliffs Cadillac in Englewood Cliffs New Jersey Joshua Cox at Grabiak Chevrolet in New Alexandria Pennsylvania Luke Haselden at Longstreet Chevrolet Buick GMC in Kingstree South Carolina And Eric Alexander at the New York Training Center in Ardsley New York Congratulations to all of you on this hard earned honor. Let s move on to What s Hot For Cars. WHAT S HOT FOR CARS We are starting cars with an interesting problem and repair. If you are working on a 2016 or 17 Cascada built prior to November 4, 2016, with a customer concern that the radio continues to play or RAP does not cancel after the driver door is opened, you may have to replace the left power window motor and regulator assembly. The power window motor control circuit board may have a defect that prevents communication to the BCM for window indexing. The BCM needs to see the indexing signal to know that the door is open before it will cancel RAP. On vehicles with this concern you may find DTC s U1530 or U1534 set. Follow SI diagnostics to verify that window indexing data is not being communicated to the BCM. Refer to 16- NA-398 for further details. If you are working on a 2010 through 2015 Cruze or a 2016 Cruze VIN P for a loose or inop door glass, bulletin 16-NA-397 provides a fix that does not require replacement of the regulator. This condition may be caused by the glass separating from the window regulator. This condition tends to be more common in colder temperatures which we are getting back into now. If the glass freezes in the door run channel it may separate from the regulator when the customer attempts to lower the window using the switch. After removing the door trim and separating the window from the regulator, tape the glass in the full UP position. Remove the front and rear window regulator clamp rubber inserts from the regulator and sand them lightly with 80 grit paper. Clean the surface with Acrysol or equivalent to remove any debris. Reinstall the inserts into the clamps on the regulator and Apply a bead of Wurth RTV Silicone Clear, or equivalent, evenly across the channel of each rubber insert. Reconnect the window switch and carefully run the window to the full up position, ensuring the window seats into the sash. Tighten the sash nuts and reinstall the water deflector and trim panel. The tape on the glass must be left in place for the amount of time recommended by the RTV silicone manufacturer.

You may want to place a piece of tape over the window switch to remind the customer to not operate that window too soon. The bulletin provides information on how to obtain the Wurth RTV which is supplied in a pressurized container which makes it very convenient for this application. Here is an item that applies to both cars and trucks. With vehicles using R1234YF refrigerant, which includes all 2017 model year vehicles, AC system diagnosis requires the use of the GE Refrigerant Recovery/Recharge cart. Because of the cost of this refrigerant, this equipment does NOT allow a partial charge for leak check until the system is tested for a gross leak using vacuum. If that test passes, a 15% charge can be added to help check for small leaks. But the goal is to use a dye check to find most leaks. A gross leak should have an easily visible fluorescent dye trace at the leak point. If not, you may be able to hear the leak during a vacuum check. The days of shooting in a partial charge as the first step in AC system leak diagnostics are over! Our last story in cars is a quick heads up concerning the Bolt EV. While performing the disable procedure for the battery, we ran into some difficulty removing the rear seat to access the Manual Disconnect Lever. The seat wouldn t pop up, so we took a closer look. It turns out that there are releases on the left and right side allowing the front of seat to be raised. Here we are looking across the vehicle from the left door. You can see the seat retainers and the manual disconnect lever. here is a close-up of the latch locked and here, the latch is released. One other quick note, this information is in SI, if only we had looked up the procedure! That s all we have for cars, What s Hot for Trucks is next. WHAT S HOT FOR TRUCKS 16-NA-406 provides a fix for a 2017 Acadia with an Electric Park Brake switch that is loose or falls into the knee bolster. Pressure on the switch may cause the retainers to disengage from the bolster To repair this concern, replace the knee bolster with a new part. Part numbers are listed in the bulletin. Install the original switch into the new knee bolster, then wrap a piece of Tesa PET Cloth Abrasion Resistant Tape* or equivalent, around the switch, overlapping onto the bolster. Test for proper retention of the switch when pressed before installing the panel. 16-NA-395 provides information on front door high retention retainers breaking when the door trim panel is removed on any of these 2016 or 2017 vehicles:

Envisoin, LaCrosse, XT5, Impala VIN 1, Malibu VIN Z, Camaro, Colorado, Cruze, Volt, Impala, Malibu, Bolt EV, Acadia VIN N or Canyon. The high retention retainers will be retainers located at the upper rear of the door trim. Some models have 2 but others may only have one at that location. These clips tend to break when the panel is removed because the retention strength exceeds the strength of the clip. Always carefully inspect these retainers after removing a door panel and replace any that are damaged. You may want to ask your parts department to stock a few of them. Its part number Bulletin 16-NA-389 covers a Lane Departure, Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Alert, Front Automatic Braking and/or Adaptive Cruise Control Inoperative concern as well as a Weak or Dead Battery or Battery Low, Start Vehicle Message Displayed on any of these 2016 vehicles: CT6 Malibu Silverado or Sierra Escalade, Suburban, Tahoe or Yukon The Front Camera Module or FVCM may lockout during a power up or power down cycle, preventing proper functionality. The lockout leaves the module powered on, even with the ignition off, and will drain the battery if the vehicle sits for an extended period of time. To repair this concern, reprogram the FVCM with the latest calibrations. Be sure to fully charge the battery prior to programming and connect the PSC 550 battery maintainer or GR8 in Powers supply mode to maintain battery voltage during programming. PIT5533 covers a creak, click pop crack noise from the front suspension or frame area while making turns on any of the 2015 through 2017 K2 trucks or SUVs. The noise may be caused by the front frame crossmember. Loosen then retorque the four attaching bolts. On the first pass, tighten to 52 lb ft. On the second pass, tighten an additional 110 degrees. Road test again to determine if the concern has been eliminated. PIT5530 provides a service tip for any K2 truck or SUV equipped with accessory 6-spoke split chrome wheels, RPO SEU. Any time these 22 inch wheels are installed or any service is performed requiring removal of the wheels, the tinnerman push nuts must be removed. They are only used to hold the brake rotors on the axle during assembly and serve no purpose after assembly. Failure to remove the tinnerman push nuts could cause an issue where the wheel will no longer be flush when it is mounted to the rotor, creating lateral runout, inducing a vibration. Next, we have 2 PI s and a bulletin on the 2015 or 16 Colorado Canyon related to noises from the steering. The first is PIT489. If your diagnosis shows the clunk or rattle over bumps is from the lower

steering intermediat shaft, engineering has released an updated part to correct the concern. It is part number PIT5373 covers a driver s airbag rattle, click or tick noise on any Colorado Canyon built before July 30, 2015, replace the steering wheel with an updated part as listed in the parts catalog. In addition, before reinstalling the air bag, apply Krytox grease to the 4 springs in the horn switch vehicles built between July and May already have the updated steering wheel. Just remove the air bag and apply Krytox grease to the 4 springs in the horn switch. After the springs are greased lift up on the wire frame for the horn switch and remove the spring posts from the boss in the steering wheel. Apply the Krytox to the inside and the shoulder of the boss and reinstall the horn switch and airbag. Vehicles built after May already have both updates and should not have this concern Bulletin 16-NA-159 covers 2015 and 16 Colorado Canyon built prior to April 25, 2016 with a squeak or rubbing noise from the steering column. This may be caused by the inner and outer intermediate steering shaft boots being out of position. Inspect the boots and if necessary, use a trim stick to properly seat them. The bulletin provides a unique labor op for this repair. That s it for Trucks. Powertrain is next. POWERTRAIN To start powertrain this month Take a look at Doc id It covers proper installation of the clutch fluid seal rings. GM has seen a number of returned 8L90 transmission assemblies with damaged clutch fluid seal rings. Here is a look at one of the damaged rings. Note the slight depression in the 2 legs at the split in the ring. This shows that the ring was installed incorrectly with the 2 legs under opposite side, instead of over it. Here is how the ring should fit together. And here is the inset from doc ID , also showing proper assembly of the connection. Improper installation will cause internal leakage and transmission damage. Next, let s look at bulletin 16-NA-014 it was recently updated and provides a repair for delayed engagement after the vehicle has been sitting with the engine off. The customer may also state that it delayed going into gear, didn t want to move, was slipping or that it engaged harshly. These concerns can be caused by the torque converter draining transmission fluid back into the pan.

Set up GDS 2 to monitor engine RPM and transmission input shaft speed. Start the vehicle and then review the time it took for the input shaft speed equal engine speed. If it is greater than 2 seconds, replace the stator shaft support assembly. The new support has an additional check ball location to stop the drain back condition. Refer to the bulletin for the proper procedure. In the September 2016 Featured Topic, we reviewed the Corvette Driveline Support Assembly Replacement procedure. Today we have an additional point to cover in that procedure. If the support is pushed aggressively onto the engine, it is very possible that the propeller input shaft front bearing can be knocked out of position even though the positioning bolts are installed. In this picture you can see the bearing pushed back. These bolts are designed to withstand an insertion force not greater than 130 lb. If the bearing is knocked out of position, damage will occur to the insulator on the shaft. Even after driving just a few miles, damage has begun to the rubber insulator on the shaft. You can see the wear marks and it is starting to separate. Here is what it can look like after a few more miles of driving. Notice all the small beads of rubber and the fraying. And here it is completely destroyed. These pictures are of parts sent back to GM after a repair requiring removal of the driveline support assembly. Please use a little finesse when installing this assembly. If in doubt, recheck the bearing position. In the September 2015 Emerging Issues, Back to Basics Segment, we covered proper use of the DT45096 Transmission Oil Cooling System Flush and Flow Test Tool. In there we told you that if the flow rates are more than double the minimum spec shown in the table in SI, you need to recheck your work. A flow rate that high indicates that the tool was not installed correctly and that fluid was flowing through the bypass valve. GM continues to see print outs that show this is still a problem. Be aware that the claim could be rejected if this procedure is not performed correctly. PIC6229 covers the 2016 and 17 Malibu Hybrid, which uses transmission RPO MKE, for a customer concern that the vehicle cranked but would not start. After several failed engine crank attempts the vehicle will may longer crank. When checking for DTCs you may find that the hybrid system has set a current DTC: P0AFA. After excessive crank attempts where the engine spins but does not start, the high voltage battery pack will be depleted, similar to draining a 12 volt battery on a traditional powertrain. P0AFA sets for this excessive cranking condition and once set, the battery pack must be replaced due to cell damage. So, it is VERY important to find and repair the reason for the engine not starting before damaging the battery and setting DTC P0AFA. The cause of the no start could be as simple as the car being out of fuel, or a more complex reason which can take longer to diagnose. On a strong hybrid product like the new Malibu, the engine may appear like it is running, but the high voltage electric motors actually crank the engine at 1,400 rpm for several seconds at a time. Once DTC P0AFA sets, the entire battery pack must be replaced before any additional cranking attempts will be allowed.

If you encounter a Malibu Hybrid which cranks but does not start, there is now a way to charge the high voltage battery using the EL-50332, if the battery did not get low enough to set P0AFA. This will allow additional crank attempts for diagnosis without damaging the cells Software downloads for the EL are available on the GM Dealer Solutions web site, gmdesolutions.com. You will have to download and install the latest update prior to charging the Malibu Hybrid battery. In this month s Back to Basics segment, we will show you the update procedure for the EL and other GM special tools. SI will provide the proper procedure soon. Until then, if you are working on one of these vehicles and need to charge the high voltage battery, please call TAC for instructions on how to charge the battery pack for additional cranking attempts. An internal fault in the high voltage battery could also cause this DTC to set. Refer to the PI for details on how to distinguish a low battery from a faulted battery. The key point to remember is that the Malibu Hybrid s engine will have a limited number of crank attempts until the high voltage battery pack needs to be recharged. If too many attempts are made, the battery will be discharged and P0AFA will set, requiring battery replacement. 16-NA-404 provides a fix for any of these 2017 vehicles built prior to the date listed and equipped with either the 8L45 or 8L90 transmission and any of these DTCs stored as current or history: P0747, P0777, P0797, P2715 or P2724 This condition may be caused by a calibration anomaly in the TCM. If you are working on one of these vehicles with any of these DTCs, reprogram the TCM with the latest available calibration available on TIS2Web. Remember to connect an EL battery maintainer or EL50313 GR8 to the battery to ensure voltage doesn t drop during programming. Also, you must run the Service Fast Learn procedure after programming to ensure the transmission shifts properly. While we had a Bolt EV here at the training center for development of new courseware, we managed to get a bit of video on the new lift table that is required for battery removal and installation The GE52200 Battery lift table is required for removal of the Bolt EV High Voltage battery. This lift tool has 2 open tubes that allow you to pick it up using a fork lift. Each of the four wheels can be set to swivel by pulling outward on the ring at the center of the wheel and rotating 90 degrees. Pulling and rotating the ring an additional 90 degrees will lock the wheel in a straight forward position. The handle can be removed by pulling the pins on each side and sliding the handle rearward. This can be helpful when removing the battery to prevent contact with the handle and also removes a pinch point. The table is operated using a simple air over hydraulic unit. Connect shop air to lift the table.

The length of the table can be adjusted to several positions by pulling out on the pin and sliding the rear of the table in our out. It automatically locks into position at set points. After properly positioning the table under the battery, disconnect all necessary electrical connectors and remove the retaining bolts. Use the hydraulic unit to slowly lower the battery. Stop frequently and inspect the assembly to ensure all connectors have been properly disconnected. When the table is fully lowered, disconnect the air hose and stow the hydraulic control. The cart can now be rolled out from under the vehicle. To place the battery into the case for return to GM, you will need these additional special tools: Refer to SI for the proper lift points on the battery. After lifting the battery slightly off the table, check to ensure it is properly balanced. When reinstalling the battery, only use the correct alignment holes to nudge the battery into proper alignment. Once seated, reinstall all of the retaining bolts before lowering the lift table. Just to be clear, this was not an instructional video for the table and does not qualify you to operate it. Always refer to the manufacturer s instructions for proper operation. As a quick reminder, as usual with sub-assemblies, you should never use threaded bolt holes to align components. This could cause damage to the threads. Alignment holes are provided. That s all we ve got for Powertrain, up next is Back to Basics. BACK TO BASICS In back to basics this month, we are going to demonstrate how to update the software in several different diagnostic tools, the EL Battery Tester Charger or GR8, the EL Multi-Media Interface Tester or MIT, and the EL Hybrid/EV Battery Service Tool. It is very important to keep these tools up-to-date so they provide you with the best service and the correct information for the warranty claim. Let s take a look at the procedure for updating the GR8: Software updates for several GM service tools can be found at the GMDESolutions.com web site. Begin by entering your and password. If you have not set up an account, click on the Apply for Access link. Next, click on the Software Download tab on the home screen. Here you can find updates for the AFIT, VDR, TPM, GR8, MIT, EL Depowering tool and NVH. For this demonstration we are going to update the GR8. Click on the GR8 Update link. Click on the Download GR8 Software Update link. Currently version 4.6. In the Midtronics Update Wizard, click on Next. All directions for this update are supplied within the update wizard.

Plug the GR8 into a dedicated, grounded 15 amp or greater AC outlet and turn the unit ON. Locate the USB to Mini USB cable that was supplied with the unit. It will be required to perform the update. Do NOT plug it in at this time. Click on Next in the wizard to advance to the next set of directions. Here we are directed to remove the SD card from the GR8, if it is installed. The card slot is located on the right side of the unit. Press in gently and release to eject the card. Leave the card out of the unit for the reminder of the update. Click NEXT on the update wizard to advance the directions. Connect the USB to MiniUSB cable between the computer and the GR8. The USB port is located at the bottom left of the GR8 control module. In the Update Wizard, click Next to begin the update process. Once started, this process should not be stopped. Interruption may cause damage to the GR8, requiring sending the unit in for out-of-warranty repairs. The update will take between 10 and 20 minutes to complete. If a Found New Hardware Wizard appears, follow the on-screen instructions. If an Error Code 10 occurs after Found New Hardware Wizard completes, reboot the computer before continuing. Once the update completes an update results screen will appear, close the program and disconnect the USB cable. Turn the GR8 OFF and reinstall the SD card if it was removed earlier. Turn the GR8 back on and allow it to boot up. The update is complete.if the GR8 is not up to date, it may not print out a valid warranty code for a failed battery which will result in the claim being rejected by GM. As you saw, this was a quick and easy procedure, so make sure yours has the latest software. Next, we have the procedure for updating the MIT: To update the MIT software, open the gmdesolutions.com web site and log on. This page will display all of the tools that can be updated. Select the MIT Update link. On the following screen, select the Download MIT Update Utility. If asked if it is OK to run an.exe file, select OK or Run. When prompted, confirm the update and click OK Connect the MIT to a USB port on the computer while holding down Button 2 on the MIT. Once the MIT is recognized, you will be prompted to release the button. Then you will be prompted to hold down the enter button on the MIT and click the OK button on the computer screen. When the update completes, unplug the MIT from the USB port When the update completes, you will be prompted to disconnect the USB connector from the computer. The next time the MIT is connected to a USB port (powered on?) all lamps will illuminate for approximately 12 seconds. After that the unit is ready to use.

An update was released for the MIT in late December allowing it to work on Infotainment 3.0 Simple Secure Phone Pairing and to support FAT32 USB. Again, this is a simple update that can be accomplished in just a few minutes but the tool won t work on the latest systems if it doesn t have the latest software. The last software update we are covering this month is the EL Hybrid/EV Battery Service Tool. It is used to balance battery sections on the Volt, Spark EV and now on the Bolt EV. Take a look: Software updates for several GM service tools can be found at the GMDESolutions.com web site. Here you can find updates for the AFIT, VDR, TPM, GR8, MIT, EL Depowering tool and NVH. Begin by entering your and password. If you have not set up an account, click on the Apply for Access link. Next, click on the EL Update Tool link. In the next screen, directions for the update are listed. Click on the Download EL Update Tool link. When prompted, select Run Once downloaded, the application will open automatically and request that you insert the USB drive from the EL into one of the computers USB ports. The computer must have an active connection to the internet. Once the program recognizes the drive, any pending data will be sent to GM and then the newest update files will be downloaded onto the drive. When the download completes, you will be prompted to remove the USB drive from the computer port and reinstall it into the port on the EL Power up the EL and enter into the utility menu. From there select update to initiate a software update from the USB Drive. Confirm USB is checked And then select yes The update process can take minutes. The unit will return to the main menu with the update is complete This tool needs specific software for each vehicle it works with. Because the Bolt EV was just released, new software for the EL was also recently released. So the tool will need to be updated before it will work on the Bolt EV. As you saw, other tools have software updates available on the gmdesolutions.com web site. I will try to cover the AFIT next month. TURN That s it for Back to Basics. Fix It Right The First Time is next. FIX IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME In Fix it Right the First Time we review COMMONLY MIS-DIAGNOSED symptoms. One for cars and one for Trucks

(TURN) For cars, we have a customer concern of a rattle or buzz noise, or a hanging wheel liner, in the rear of their Cadillac CT6. 9 This condition may be caused by the incorrect installation of the J-Clips, which were installed onto the wheel liner. 0 To repair this concern, what you SHOULD DO is install the J-Clips onto the sheet metal flange, and reinsert the screws. What you SHOULD NOT DO is replace any components for this concern See 16NA387 for more information and unique labor operation. For trucks we have a customer complaint that the brake lights remain on, the cruise control doesn t work, and/or the battery is dead on 2017 Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia vehicles. 1 This condition may be caused by the plastic Brake Pedal Position Sensor, or BPPS flag bracket allowing too much movement, which causes the BPPS to indicate that the brake pedal is applied. 2 To repair this concern what you SHOULD DO is access the brake and accelerator pedal assembly and make sure all 3 plastic tabs are secured over the pedal arm. If they are not, snap them into place. 2 Then, using your finger apply force to the BPPS activation pin and check for movement from the lower retention tab, as shown in 1. Lightly press and release the BPPS activation pin and check for movement from the lower retention tab, as shown in 2. 2 If any movement is found, replace the pedal assembly.
