See Oil Temp Sensor Setup section below to add an Oil Temp sensor. CAN Bus Wiring The AEM CD-7 has 2 separate CAN ports. For 3 rd party devices, AEM recommends you use AEM CAN BUS 2, whose connections are accessed via a 2 pin deutsch DTM connector in the dash harness. If you have a very early dash, this may be a flying lead with no connector. The MEFI-4b has two, 32 pin connectors named J1 and J2. CAN Locations: MEFI CAN Hi (J2-24) AEM CD-7 Pin 5 (CAN 2+), Gray wire in twisted/shielded pair, DTM MEFI CAN Lo (J2-9) AEM CD-7 Pin 6 (CAN 2-), Black wire in twisted/shielded pair, DTM The MEFI-4b has a 120 ohm terminating resistor installed internally. As long as the ECU is on one physical end of the CAN Network and the CD-7 is on the other with its terminating resistor activated then no further action regarding terminating resistors is required. MEFI-4b ECU Setup There are many MEFI-4b software tuning programs available and engine suppliers may have custom programmed versions of the MEFI-4b ECU supplied with their engines as well. It is impossible to cover the details in all the different software programming packages so we will just cover the common essentials. You must make sure the CAN output is activated. It is sometimes set as a flag called CAN Bus Present or something similar. It should be Yes or On or Set

4 There are two different CAN message address bases commonly used, the 00 base and the 183, a.k.a. the Racepak base. The AEM CD-7 has been configured to work with either base address, no changes should be required. You must make sure your ECU is outputting the MEFI-4b CAN data stream. Some software packages allow you to set it to output in the MEFI-4a format. If a channel is not being transmitted then it is likely not turned on in the MEFI calibration as many can be deactivated so as to not set a code when the sensor is not present. With all questions pertaining to the MEFI calibration settings needed to activate the CAN output or specific sensors, please contact your MEFI dealer as AEM will not have any information on this. AEM Setup in DashDesign The fastest way to get something working is to use the AEM created setup for the MEFI-4b ECU named, MEFI-4b_rev2.aemcd7 (use the newest revision available) which can be found in the same location as this document was. This is our default black layout with the MEFI-4b CAN inputs preconfigured and includes the all the data channels listed earlier. If you choose this method then simply load this configuration into your dash and you are done. If you want to create something from scratch, (it may still be quicker and easier to modify the AEM created setup described above) you can either start with a new dash layout by selecting File then New in DashDesign or you can select from a pre-designed layout that has screens already designed and inserted but has the CAN inputs left blank. These are chosen by selecting File then Open and selecting one of the setups titled xzyblank.aemcd7 with the xyz representing a description of the layouts contained in the file. To import the CAN configuration into your setup you select Setup then Display from the main DashDesign menu. Once the dialog box opens you select the CAN Receive tab. Change the settings to the following: Show: Port 2 Baudrate: 250 kbit/s Termination Resistor: Checked Address Mask Enabled: Checked Ext: Checked Mask: 0x1FFFFF00 M800 Support: OFF Once properly configured it should look something like this Then click on Import CAN on the lower left and select the MEFI-4b CAN setup file. The new items will appear in the Outputs tab. They can now be viewed on the display or logged. You can rename, filter, or manipulate any of these channels to make them more useful.

5 Now you need to setup the CAN Request function in the dash to tell the ECU to send the data. Click in the CAN Request tab and confirm the settings are as shown below: Show: Port 2 Baudrate: 250 kbit/s Termination Resistor: Checked Click on the Insert button on the lower right of the dialog to add a line along with the following, adding a new line each time. After adding all 8 lines it should look like this Notes: The actual name used is irrelevant except that it will auto-sort alphabetically so it will be easiest if you just accept the default name for each line as it is added. Clicking on the When cell gives you a choice of a time based request or one in response to a received message. In this case the first message is time based, all others are based on received messages. Each line responds to a different received CAN message. You enter the ID in the dialog box that appears after you select the Respond To option in the When cell for each line. All the ID s are the same in this case. 0x18EAFF00, as is the Ext value (checked) and the Len (length). It is very important you put the 3 in here or it will hang up the CAN from the MEFI. The default value of 8 MUST be changed to 3. Add the B1 & B2 values from the table above. The B3-B8 values can be left as the default 0x00. Oil Pressure Sensor Setup The MEFI-4b ECU only transmits the oil pressure sensor voltage on the CAN bus, not the actual calibrated oil pressure. If you know what type of Oil Pressure sensor you have connected (to pin J2-20) you can view the much more useful PSI output from the sensor and the AEM CAN setup has already included the 3 most likely sensor calibrations you may encounter. In addition to a channel called OilPressSensorVolt, which contains the 0-5v output of the sensor, there are also 3 more channels; Basically you have a choice between the Factory GM sensor and aftermarket 100 & 150 PSI sensors. So if you have an Oil Pressure sensor connected, use the most appropriate channel name to see the calibrated PSI value. 6 Fuel Pressure Sensor Setup As with the Oil Pressure, the MEFI-4b ECU only transmits the Fuel Pressure sensor voltage on the CAN bus, not the actual calibrated Fuel Pressure. If you know what type of Fuel Pressure sensor you have connected (to pin J2-4) you can view the data in PSI. The AEM CAN setup has already included the 2 most likely sensor calibrations you may encounter. In addition to a channel called FuelPressSensorVolt, which contains the 0-5v output of the sensor, there are also 2 more channels; Channel Name Sensor Cal Description FuelPress_100psi 0.5 v = 0 psi 4.5 v = 100 psi Most aftermarket 100 psi sensors FuelPress_150psi 0.5 v = 0 psi 4.5 v = 150 psi Most aftermarket 150 psi sensors So if you have a Fuel Pressure sensor connected, use the most appropriate channel name to see the calibrated PSI value. Oil Temp Sensor Setup The MEFI-4b does not have an identified Oil Temp sensor input but you can repurpose the VSS_AN/FTEMP input on pin J2-26 into one. This input was originally designed as a 0-5v Vessel Speed Sensor input, with a backup use as a Fuel Temp sensor input, but neither of these is as useful as an Oil Temp sensor input.
