6 1.3 Short Description of the Machine Applications The analysette 18 is a heavy duty vibrating shaker designed to conduct sieve tests in conjunction with sieve stacks for particle sizing of various material samples. It is a heavy duty sieve shaker for separation and classification of grain fractions, which has analytical screens up to 400 mm or 16" in diameter. It is especially suitable for particle size analysis or for separation of coarse-grained material in large quantities. The movement of a rotary sieve is a three dimensional movement, which is why it is often employed whenever mechanical screening has the advantage over hand screening for reasons of cost, or because of the required reproducibility of the results Method of Operation By utilising two off-set vibratory motors, mounted directly onto a location plate, the analysette 18 induces both vertical and rotational movement of the sample. This produces the optimum action for effective and efficient sieving. The analysette 18 is a fixed amplitude shaker. An incremental timer provides a range of pre-set and repeatable sieve test run times. The analysette 18 is not recommended for any Wet Sieving operation. The analysette 18 is fully EMC and LVD compliant and complies with all relevant European directives. analysette 18 page 3

Voltage and Power consumption Voltage: Frequency: 50 Hz/60 Hz 50 Hz/60 Hz Phase: Single Power conspt. 280VA 480 VA Transient over voltages according to over voltage category II allowed. Electrical Fuses (Live & Neutral) These are 1¼ inch long anti-surge ceramic fuses that protect the electrical components within the equipment. It is important that the recommended current rating is not exceeded (3.15 amperes for 230 volts, 5 amperes for 110 volts) and the fuse is replaced with the same type and size. If the fuse blows after replacement then a fault exists in the equipment. Class 1 (earthed) Motor Speed 1,500 per min at 50 Hz 1,500 per min at 50 Hz 1,800 per min at 60 Hz 1,800 per min at 60 Hz Process Time 5 to 60 minutes Fritschs policy is one of continuous development and we reserve the right to modify future models. analysette 18 page 4
8 2 Operating Safety 2.1 General Safety Instructions Read the operating instructions carefully before use. The instrument can only to be used for the purpose described in Chapter Short Description of the Instrument Use only original accessories and original spare parts. Failure to do so may call into question the performance of the instrument. Do not use damaged accessories. The operators must be familiar with the contents of the operating instructions. To this end, for example, the operating instructions must with the instrument. Do not remove labels. Protective devices must not be made unserviceable or removed. Unauthorized modification of the instrument or any part thereof will result in the loss of the conformity to European directives which is asserted by Fritsch and the warranty. Wear protective gloves! Grinding bowls may be very hot after grinding. Wear safety glasses Don t run the instrument several hours without cooling phases - Danger of overheating. The analysette 18 is not recommended for any Wet Sieving operation. Behaviour at all times must be such as to strictly preclude any accidents. Furthermore, the MAC values at place of work specified in the pertinent safety regulations must be adhered to. Where applicable, ventilation must be provided or the instrument must be operated under an exhaust hood. When oxidizable materials such as metals, organic materials, wood, coal, plastic, etc. are sieved, the risk of spontaneous ignition (dust explosion) exists whenever the fine particles exceed a specific percentage. While such materials are being sieved, it is therefore necessary to take special safety precautions (e.g. wet grinding) and the work must be supervised by a specialist. The instrument is not explosion-proof and is unsuitable to grind or sieve materials which are explosive, combustible or promote combustion. Do not allow the analysette 18 to run unsupervised. Due to the vibrations, under certain operating conditions, the machine may creep along the surface on which it is located or mounted. analysette 18 page 5 Attention! observe operating instructions wear protective gloves wear safety goggles! wear ear protectors! Attention! risk of explosion

Do not lift the analysette 18 by the location plate without the transportation bolts fitted. 3.2 Assembly Once removed, lift the analysette 18 from the packing case and position on a level, rigid and robust floor, suitable for the operation of the sieve shaker (placing the shaker on a level surface ensures an even distribution of the sample over the sieves and ensures machine stability). Take Care as the shaker weighs 92 Kg When the analysette 18 is placed in its operating position the lifting eyebolts and transportation bolts can be removed, see diagram below (Retain for future use). analysette 18 page 6
10 3.3 Removal and Replacement of Transportation Bolts Fit one M12 nut and washer provided onto each clamp rod selected for use, then screw the pair of clamp rods into the location plate and tighten the locknuts. Warning: Transportation bolts must be removed before operating machine. 3.4 Levelling Release the locknuts on the machine feet and adjust until the shaker is level, then retighten the locknuts. 3.5 Sieve Stacking The analysette 18 shaker accommodates up to the following number of sieves in a stack plus the required lid and receiver: Diameter 350 mm 400 mm 450 mm/18 inch Screw the appropriate location pins into position on the location plate for the sieve stack range selected. Use the 15 mm diameter pins for the metric (350, 400 & 450 mm) range of sieves and the 10 mm diameter pins for the imperial (18 in.) sieves. Place the receiver centrally between the location pins. Stack the required sieves on top of the receiver. Put the sample under test in the top sieve and fit the lid. 3.6 Electrical connection Ensure that the voltage and frequency on the Rating Label at the rear of the shaker correspond with the electrical mains supply. If there is any discrepancy, please consult your supplier or a qualified electrician. Do Not Connect to any other supply other than that stated on the nameplate Important - This equipment must be connected to mains earth The analysette 18 sieve shaker is provided with a detachable 2 metre long mains cable, incorporating an IEC moulded connector and plug suitable for connecting to the local mains supply. Certain models may be supplied with a fused plug. In the event of failure the fuse must be replaced with a fuse of identical rating. For starting up the sieve, the main switch on the front must be switched on. The timer should be in the "Off" position. The green standby indicator should be on. analysette 18 page 7
11 4 Using the sieve shaker 4.1 Sieve Stacking Align the locking assemblies in the two side lugs of the clamp plate with the round clamp rods. Slide the clamp plate down squarely onto the lid at the top of the sieve stack. Ensure that the clamping hand wheels at the top are loose and the locking assemblies are fully pushed down. There should be a 5 mm gap between the large plain washer and the face of the hand wheel. Place one hand on the top of the clamp plate and hold square while locking one side handle lever. Repeat for the opposite side handle lever. The side handle levers can be set vertically downwards by pressing on the RED button and pulling the handle outwards to release. Turn the handle to a safe, convenient angle downwards and release to engage the teeth. Screw the two clamping hand wheels down simultaneously to ensure the clamping plate is square. Continue until the hand wheels are tight against the internal stop. Hand tightness must be exerted so that the assembly does not loosen during vibration. The locking side handle levers and clamping hand wheels must be tightened sufficiently to ensure that the sieves and receiver are clamped securely during operation. Damage may occur if the shaker is allowed to operate with a loose clamping plate. 4.2 Controls Operators should be familiar with, and fully understand the controls and indicators before operating the machine Power Supply Unit Controls The power supply unit is mounted in the rear of the shaker base, the following controls and indicators are on this: Mains Inlet Mains inlet with integral line filter.
