1 D-1-A TRIPLE VALVE, PC. NO MARCH, 1985 Supersedes issue dated July, 1984 NOTE: The following description and operation is based on this device and its components being new or this device and its components having been repaired, tested, installed and maintained in accordance with instructions issued by this and any other applicable Wabtec Corporation publications. WARNING: At the time any part is replaced in this device, the operation of the complete device must pass a series of tests prescribed in the latest issue of the applicable Wabtec Test Specification. At the time this device is applied to the brake equipment arrangement, a stationary vehicle test must be made to insure that this device functions properly in the total brake equipment arrangement. (Consult your local Wabtec Representative for identity of the test specification, with latest revision date, that covers this device.) IMPORTANT: Only Wabtec supplied parts are to be used in the repair of this device in order to obtain satisfactory operation. Commercially available non- O.E.M. parts are unacceptable. NOTE: The part numbers and their associated descriptions are the property of Wabtec Corporation and may not be replicated in any manner or form without the prior sole written consent of an Officer of Wabtec Corporation WABCO Locomotive Products. 2 the diaphragm piston assembly (13) is connected to port 5. IMPORTANT: When the D-1-A Triple Valve is used on a car which is being hauled by a locomotive, the device which is used to cut-off air flow from the supply reservoir to port 5 of the pipe bracket MUST BE IN THE OPEN position so that air flow to port 5 of the Triple Valve is unrestricted. CHARGING When brake pipe air is admitted to chamber A, the diaphragm piston (13) moves to release position. This permits spring (21) to seat the check valve (22) closing the supply reservoir passage. APPLICATION This diagrammatic representation is for functional analysis only. It is not to be used as an actual physical representation of portion or pipe bracket configurations. 1.0 DESCRIPTION Figure 1 - Diagrammatic View The D-1-A Triple Valve is a diaphragm operated device consisting of a D-1-A Triple Valve Portion and a Pipe Bracket Portion. The Triple Valve Portion is mounted on the Pipe Bracket in such a way that it can be removed for service or maintenance without disturbing the piping of the vehicle. All pipe connections are made to the Pipe Bracket Portion. NOTE: The D-1-A Triple Valve is designed for use in special airbrake equipment arrangements on rail vehicles. These vehicles are to be operated in train consists which do not exceed 1200 feet in total train length. The air pressure in these special equipment arrangements MUST NOT exceed 110 psig. The device is used to provide a method of car braking if the cars are being pulled by a locomotive. Consult your Wabtec Corporation Representative for installation procedures for specific applications. 2.0 OPERATION (FIGURE 2) The D-1-A Triple Valve functions in response to an increase or decrease in pressure in port 1. When air flow in the supply reservoir port 5 to the pipe bracket is cut-off, such as by the closing of a cut-out cock or another device and when air pressure is present in the brake pipe port 1 and chamber A, the Triple Valve is pneumatically locked in the release position. Chamber B on the upper side of When a reduction in brake pipe pressure occurs in port 1 and chamber A below the diaphragm piston assembly (13), the valve functions to admit air into the brake cylinder port 3. The pressure reduction in chamber A permits supply reservoir air in chamber B to move piston (13) to service position. In this position the piston stem seats on the check valve (22) to cut off the brake unit exhaust and unseats the check valve (22) to connect supply reservoir air to the brake unit port 3. Supply reservoir air flows to port 3 until the pressure in the supply reservoir falls to approximately that in the brake pipe, when the brake pipe air and spring (14) move the piston to lap position. Spring (21) seats check valve (22) closing the connection between the supply reservoir and port 3. This stops further flow of supply reservoir air. Supply reservoir air pressure is then practically equal to that in the brake pipe and prevents movement of the piston toward release position. The piston will remain balanced in lap with the brake unit pressure held constant until the brake pipe pressure is either reduced further to increase port 3 pressure, or increased in order to release the brake. If a further reduction in brake pressure port 1 is made after the valve is in service lap position, the pressure on the brake pipe side of piston (13) drops below that on the supply reservoir side and causes the piston to move as described for the first service application of the brake. If the brake pipe reduction is continued, the supply reservoir pressure will continue to fall and the port 3 pressure will rise until these two become equal. NOTE: Reduction of brake pipe pressure beyond this equalization pressure does not increase port 3 pressure. This is Page 2 of 6 March, 1985
3 a needless waste of air and should not be permitted. RELEASE To release the valve and recharge the supply reservoir (port 5) air is directed via trainline piping to the brake pipe (port 1) and is directed to chamber A below the diaphragm piston assembly (13). The diaphragm piston assembly (13) moves and lifts the piston stem off its seat permitting the force of spring (21) to position the check valve (22) to allow brake unit air in line (3) to be exhausted through the piston stem to atmosphere at port EX. NOTE: It is important to remember the sequence of operation when a locomotive is coupled to tow a car or train containing this valve in addition to standard brake equipment for transit operation. If in special applications the cars have been running singly or M.U. (multiple unit), the supply reservoir is charged to M.R. (main reservoir) pressure. Therefore, when port 5 is opened, supply reservoir pressure being considerably higher than brake pipe, the brake unit pressure will build up to a higher than normal value. When the brake pipe pressure in chamber A moves the diaphragmpiston assembly to release position a release of the car brakes will occur. 3.0 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE IMPORTANT: The D-1-A Triple Valve Portion should be removed from the equipment arrangement, taken to the shop, be completely disassembled, the parts cleaned, inspected, lubricated, assembled, and the valve portion tested according to the following application schedule or more frequently if service conditions so indicate. SPECIAL FREQUENCY - TYPE OF APPLICATION AT LEAST ONCE EVERY Passenger (Interstate) Transit 36 Months 24 Months 4.0 PARTS CATALOG INFORMATION Refer to the Wabtec Corporation Parts Catalog , S.2 when ordering replacement parts.
