1 COMMERCIAL FILTER SYSTEMS Commercial Aquatic Supplies is able to supply filter systems to meet the needs of all public pools. When considering new or replacement filters for your pool it is important to understand the different types of filter systems. DE Filters - The Media Diatomaceous earth, (DE) provides high quality filtration removing particles which can be as small as three to five microns in size. It is cheap and because it has many uses is readily available. It is heavy enough that it is not flushable and can block drains. It is classed as a hazardous material so must be disposed of properly. Perlite is an alternative media which can be used in DE filters to achieve almost the same filtration. It is lighter than DE making it easier to handle, specifically to get it in and out of filters. It is not classed as a hazardous so disposal can be as simple as flushing it down the drain. Vacuum or Open Pit DE Filters These are the most common types of DE Filters. They are open tanks, typically below pool water level and filled by gravity. The pool pump sucks water through the filter and pushes it back to the pool. These types of filters are economical to build and offer better quality filtration in a smaller space than similar capacity sand filters. Maintenance is also easy, and there is very little water loss during use and maintenance. VACUUM DE FILTER Pressure DE Filters In these systems the DE filter elements are mounted in a pressure vessel, just like a sand filter, filling the need for a closed system which some pools require, while maintaining the DE advantages, but at a higher price. Sand Filter Systems Sand Filters are the most common filter systems. They are economical to purchase, install and maintain. The filtration is not as fine as DE, typically in the 5-20 micron range. The media is semi-permanent, back washing is easy, and they are available in all shapes and sizes, and can even be installed outdoors. Water consumption, primarily for backwashing is much higher than for DE filters. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages, making these the most popular filter systems in the marketplace currently. 3 Defender Regenerative Media Filters by Neptune Benson This is a pressure DE filter, which has the following features. The filter footprint is very small given the flow, compared to Vacuum DE or Sand Filters. These filters are designed to use Perlite, a filter media similar to DE but which does not contain crystalline silicate, the Hazardous Component of DE, making Perlite a nuisance dust only, and Perlite is lighter than DE which means it is flushable, without clogging drains. When the pressures in a Defender filter rises, instead of backwashing the filter it can be Bumped, the media shaken up, redistributed, and reused several times before being replaced. The water usage to maintain/backwash this style of filter is very low. The Lever Bump models are very simple and reliable to use, and custom larger models typically have these features power assisted/automated to simplify maintenance. The recommended/ideal flow rate for these filters is.2 usgpm/ft2, the maximum flow rate is 2.0 usgpm/ft2. These products carry NSF, UL, and CE certifications. The larger models are priced as requested. As a replacement filter the Neptune Benson Defender Regenerative Filter requires a small footprint and can be modified to fit thru doorways. Object is to deposit at least /6" over all parts of all element. Precoat filter at U.S. GPM per sq. ft. of filter area. Maximum flow rate for filtration is 2 U.S. GPM per sq. ft. however -.5 GPM is better. Check for grease, metal staining, body oils, and other discolourations on filter elements. Suction and discharge are 2, and unions are included. The included unions fit 2 pipe inside and 2 ½ pipe outside. Self-priming to 0 above water level. 14 Hayward HCP 4000 Series Commercial Self Priming Pumps These Hayward pumps are available in 5.5, 7.5, 0 and 2.5HP, and all are available in 230/460v 3ph or 575v 3ph. Note the 575v 3ph are special order. These pumps are all-plastic, with 4 suction and 4 discharge ports. The strainer lid is clear and removes by hand. These pumps are designed for medium head/high flow situations. Do not use where high head is required. A quiet and very efficient pump if properly sized. Replacing an old VM Series pump, and looking to get all plastic; this would be a good replacement. They feature one piece 36 Stainless Steel baskets,.25 perforated, which are round with an angled top and handle. Lids are clear acrylic and see-through, with stainless steel and PVC hand knobs. Lid bolts swivel where required for easy removal. The Flanges are Vanstone, free to rotate to make alignment problem free. Configurations can be straight through, offset, or reducing as required.
