2 Do s & Don ts, General Description DO S & DON TS: DO: DO: DO: DO: GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Read entire manual before installation. If you need further information, contact MAX and ask for Flow Meter Technical Service. Install proper filtration immediately upstream of the flow meter. Install bypass plumbing around the flow meter. Use the bypass during start-up while flushing the system to (1) remove dirt by filtration and (2) bleed air and vapor from the system. Open the meter valves slowly on start-up to avoid overspeeding the meter with entrapped air. The bypass allows removal of the meter for service without disabling the system. Be very careful to keep all parts clean during installation or teardown. A little dirt on a fitting or in a line (from the floor, bench, etc.) looks like a truckload on a microscopic level. Any dirt introduced into the system between the filter and meter will not be filtered out. Run water or aqueous solutions not approved by MAX through your flow meter because of internal galling. Steam clean the meter (bypass or remove the meter if necessary). Blow down the meter with compressed air, gas, etc., because it will overspeed and possibly damage the meter. Turn on the pump in a system filled with material which is a solid at room temperature until the material has been melted completely. Use a bypass around the meter during start up. Apply excessive differential pressure across meter (see pressure drop curve safe zone) as it will cause internal parts to fail. Over pressurize the meter. Please refer to specifications for maximum operating pressure. Exceed the maximum flow rates specified (see performance curves) as it will cause internal parts to fail. MAX 220, 221 and 222 Series are positive displacement, high-pressure, gear type flow meters, similar in design to a conventional hydraulic motor. The flow of fluid through the meter turns a set of gears which drive a precision transmitter through a magnetic coupling. This generates an analog or pulse signal proportional to the volumetric flow rate. The flow range and pressure drop through the 220 Series Flow Meter depend upon the viscosity of the fluid to be metered. Normally, these flow meters are utilized on liquids having viscosities in excess of those recommended for turbine or variable area (rotameter) flow meter. Page Max Machinery, Inc.

3 Applications, Specifications APPLICATIONS: Although originally designed for the metering of rigid urethane foam components, the Model 220, 221 and 222 Flow Meters have found wide application in the following areas: Unsaturated polyester resins, especially in spray-up applications. Other non-corrosive chemicals and resins of high viscosity. Lubricating oils and other high viscosity petroleum products at low flow rates. Metering of silicone and tin catalyst components in flexible urethane foam production systems. Metering of pre-polymer and catalyst components for semirigid urethane foam crash-pad and other automotive trim component production. Other applications where conventional flow metering systems are affected by product viscosity or where the flow rate to be measured is below the minimum recommended flow of conventional positive displacement flow meters. High-pressure applications where conventional flow metering devices are not applicable. For applications outside the area of rigid and flexible urethane foams or petroleum products, it is recommended that the factory be consulted regarding the material to be metered for specific application assistance. 4 Installation INSTALLATION: Prior to installing the flow meter, determine that the gears turn freely by rotating them through the connection ports by means of plastic or fiber rod (do not use a steel rod to rotate gears due to hazards of scratching the sealing surface). Make sure that adequate filtration exists upstream of the flow meter and that no contaminants exist in the line between the filter and flow meter. It is recommended that the flow meter be connected to the circuit by means of unions close to the flow meter to allow easy removal for maintenance. A by-pass valve should be installed between the inlet and outlet ports of the flow meter to allow flow through the system in the event that the flow meter should become blocked by foreign material. For the best low flow accuracy, the flow meter should be mounted with the transmitter tube in a horizontal position like the drawing indicates. Consult the transmitter manual for information on adjustment and utilization of the flow signal. See also manuals on any readout instrument purchased with the flow meter. Page Max Machinery, Inc.
