3 I. INSTALLATION The Model RT-6000 is designed to operate at 115 VAC/60 Hz. For foreign voltage operation, your unit is modified to run at specified voltage and frequency. Place your RT-6000 on a solid work surface free from shock or vibration. Attach the line cord to the Model RT-6000 and plug into power source. We recommend addition of a surge protector to your power outlet/supply to protect the RT-6000 from power fluctuations. In some plant environments, line voltage fluctuations can affect reproducibility of readings. If this occurs, it is recommended that a voltage stabilizing transformer be connected between your power source and the RT The RT-6000 requires a warmup time of approximately 10 minutes before running samples. For this reason, it is recommended the machine be left on continually unless it is to be out of service for an extended period. To prevent inadvertent turn-off, no ON/OFF switch is provided. II. OPERATION A. THEORY OF OPERATION The Oakland Instrument Model RT-6000 is a visible-light source/photoelectric-detector-based off-line film opacity meter. It measures the amount of visible light absorbed/reflected by a film sample when that sample is placed between the light source and detector. The calibration process provides two reference points: a Full-Scale and Zero reference. The Full-Scale Calibration provides a reference point at which the light detector is receiving no light, or 100% absorption/reflection (opacity). The Zero Calibration provides a second reference point at which the light detector is receiving full light, or 0% absorption/reflection (opacity). The Full-Scale and Zero Calibration define a relative relationship between measured light transmission and opacity, where the amount of source light absorbed/reflected by the sample is indicated on the Digital Display on a scale of 0 to 100 relative Opacity Units of opacity. 3

5 C. PREPARING FILM SAMPLES Samples for the RT-6000 should be cut to a minimum of 4 inches by 4 inches in size. Care should be exercised to prevent overlapping or wrinkling of film. It is recommended that approximately three (or more) samples from around the bubble, bag or across the web be measured to ensure representative data. D. METER WARMUP CYCLE When you first power up (or reset) the Model RT-6000, it is suggested you allow a 10-minute warmup cycle before running samples. The Model RT-6000 should be Full-Scale and Zero-Calibrated prior to running film samples. E. CALIBRATING THE MODEL RT To Full-Scale Calibrate the Model RT-6000, simply turn the Light Switch to the OFF position and adjust the Full-Scale Calibrate knob so that the Digital Display reads 100. Make sure that there is no film sample under the Hinged Lid during this procedure. Once the Full-Scale Calibration is completed, it should not require readjustment unless the Full-Scale Calibrate knob is inadvertently moved from its correct position. It is recommended that the Full-Scale Calibration be checked periodically to make sure it is set properly. Turn the Light Switch to the ON position and proceed with the Zero Calibration procedure found in the next section. F. ZEROING THE MODEL RT To Zero Calibrate the Model RT-6000, make sure the Light Switch is in the ON position and adjust the Zero Calibrate knob so that the Digital Display reads 0. Make sure that there is no film sample under the Hinged Lid during this procedure. It is recommended that before running each film sample, check and, if necessary, re-zero the Model RT

6 G. MEASURING OPACITY OF A FILM SAMPLE After Full-Scale and Zero Calibration of your Model RT-6000, you are now ready to test film samples. Lift the Hinged Lid and place your film sample uniformly over the light source window. Lower the lid gently so the Hinged Lid gasket provides a uniform seal around the film sample. The opacity is indicated on the Digital Display on a scale of 0 to 100 relative Opacity Units. III. MAINTENANCE OF YOUR MODEL RT The durable construction of your Model RT-6000 results in minimal maintenance requirements. Replacing the Light Bulb If no light is coming through the light source window with the RT-6000 plugged into a power source and the Light Switch is in the ON position, do the following: First remove the power cord from the power connector on the back panel of the Model RT-6000 to disconnect the power from the instrument. Next, check the fuse in the fuse holder on the back panel. If the fuse is in good condition, next check the light bulb. Remove the four screws from the top panel of the RT-6000 and set them aside. While facing the front of the RT-6000, lift the top panel on the left side, tipping it to the right (or clockwise, looking at the front of the instrument), balancing the right edge of the top panel on the top of the instrument. For your convenience, a connector is located on the inside of the right side panel, which can be disconnected to allow removal of the top panel assembly so it can be fully removed and set aside. Next, unscrew the light bulb and check it to see if the light bulb filament is burned out or broken. If it is burned out, replace it with the spare replacement bulb provided. Use only 15-watt replacement bulbs. Light bulbs will give more steady/reproducible results after they have been illuminated for approximately 48 hours. 6

7 Cleaning Your RT-6000 Approximately once per month, or other schedule depending on your operating environment (presence of airborne dust, dirt, etc.), you should clean the light source window, sensor window and mirror of your RT These surfaces can be cleaned with a damp cloth, or cloth moistened with household or commercial glass cleaner. Before cleaning the mirror, which requires lifting or removing the top panel, remove the power cord from the power connector on the back panel of the Model RT-6000, to disconnect power from the instrument. IV. APPENDIX: OPTIONAL INSTALLATION OF CABINET LEGS Your RT-6000 is shipped with two optional Cabinet Legs installed. Each leg is attached to the cabinet with two by inch-long socket head cap screws. The screws are installed using a 5/32 hex wrench. The legs raise the front of the instrument approximately 1-1/2 inch, allowing easier access to the Digital Display and operation controls. The bottom of your RT-6000 also has four non-skid feet. You can remove the two Cabinet Legs should you prefer to have the instrument lie flat on your work surface. 7
