1 BMF TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE This document contains troubleshooting guidelines for PEP's standard BMF filters with pumps. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS: W-X-0039 BMF Electrical Wiring Drawing WP0011 BMF Control Panel Layout LINKAdj Linkage Arms Adjustment Procedure P-X-0066 SHT 1 BMF-24 Thru BMF-66 Linkage Assembly P-X-0066 SHT 2 BMF-72 Thru BMF-90 Linkage Assembly P-X-0066 SHT 3 BMF-96 Linakge Assembly PROBLEM: Pump not running REASON: Power is not on A. Check on/off switch at customer disconnect switch. B. Check on/off on front of panel (Dwg WP0008 item 23). REASON: Overloads are tripped A. Reset (Dwg WP0008 item 3) B. Check motor for proper rotation. C. Check impeller for free movement. D. Check overload amp setting with the motor nameplate. Adjust overloads to the sum of the name plate setting plus the primary amp fuse size. E. Check system amps and volts with voltmeter or ammeter. REASON: Fuse is blown (units with a motor relay (MR) A. Check the fuses (Dwg WP0008 items 17 and 18) with ohmmeter. B. Check system volts with a voltmeter while filter is on across L1 and L2, L2 and L3 and L1 and L3. If any of the three voltages drop by 10% of the rated system voltage, check the system upstream of the filter. Replace fuses with slower acting fuses if necessary. PROBLEM: Leaks around the pump

2 REASON: Pump seal is bad. A. Change pump seal. Consult factory. Have the PEP work order or the manufacturer and model of the pump available. PROBLEM: No flow through the filter REASON: Pump is cavitating A. Check for closed valves. B. Open manual air relief valve on top of filter until all air is removed. C. Check to assure the valves are in the filter mode. D. Pre-strainer is clogged. Clean pre-strainer. E. Open ended pipe on the discharge of the filter without any tipe of flow restriction like a valve, flow controller or sweeper jets. F. Pump is not flooded because check valve is not located below the water level of the sump or cooling tower. REASON: Dirty media A. Normal condition during the first two weeks of startup. B. Change media if necessary. PROBLEM: Filter will not backwash REASON: Fuse is blown A. Check the fuses (Dwg WP0008 items 17 and 18) with an ohmmeter. B. Check system volts with a voltmeter while filter is on across L1 and L2, L2 and L3, and L1 and L3. If any of the three voltages drop by 10% of the rated system voltage, check the system upstream of the filter for other electrical units that may cause surges. Replace fuses with slower acting fuses if necessary. REASON: Air to solenoid is not between PSIG A. Air is off ahead of the solenoid. REASON: Backwash timer is bad

3 A.1. Turn power off. 2. Remove timer (WP0008 item 15). 3. Place a jumper on terminals 1 and 5 to see if actuator moves to the backwash position (Dwg W-X-0039). 4. Turn power on. 5. If actuator moves to backwash position, timer is bad. If not the timer is not the problem. 6. Turn power off. 7. Remove jumper from terminals 1 and Replace timer. REASON: Lockouts between 2 or more filters exist A. Another filter is backwashing. REASON: Level in a waste holding tank is high (if applicable). A. Open waste holding tank discharge valve. Filter will be able to backwash when the level goes below the low level switch. B. Normal operation, the level has not gone below the low level switch since reaching the high level switch. REASON: Loose wire A. Check for any loose wiring. REASON: Butterfly valve is hung up against customer provided piping piping (NOTE: DO NOT PLACE A REDUCER ON THE BUTTERFLY VALVE). REASON: Bad solenoid valve A. Remove solenoid and check on test stand. PROBLEM: Filter is slow to move to the backwashing and/or backwashing position

4 REASON: Not a sufficient supply of air (25-35 PSIG) A. Check for partially closed valves in the air line. B. Customer provided line size to solenoid is too small (recommended size: BMF 24-66=¼", BMF 72-90=3/8" and BMF 96=½"). REASON: Butterfly valve is hung against customer provided piping piping. (Note: DO NOT PLACE A REDUCER ON THE BUTTERFLY VALVE.) PROBLEM: Water is leaking through the waste outlet during the filtering cycle REASON: Linkage is not set properly A. See LINKAGE ARMS ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE. REASON: Butterfly valve is hung against customer provided piping piping. (NOTE: DO NOT PLACE A REDUCER ON THE BUTTERFLY VALVE.) PROBLEM: Filter is stuck in backwash REASON: Bad backwash timer A.1. Turn power off. 2. Remove timer (see dwg WP0008 item 15). 3. Place a jumper on terminals 1 and 5 (see dwg W-X-0039). 4. Turn power on. If filter goes to backwash position, the timer is bad. If not, the timer is not the problem. 5. Turn power off. 6. Remove jumper from terminals 1 and Replace timer. REASON: Loose wire A. Loose wire.

5 REASON: Fuse is blown A. Check the fuses (dwg WP0008 items 17 and 18) with ohmmeter. B. Check system volts with a voltmeter while filter is on L2, L2 and L3, and L1 and L3. If any of the three voltages drop by 10% of the rated system voltage, check the system upstream of the filter. Replace fuses with slower acting fuses if necessary. PROBLEM: FILTER KEEPS BACKWASHING REASON: Dirty Media A. Normal condition during the first two weeks after startup. B. Change media. REASON: Pressure setting on high differential pressure switch is set too low (set at 16 PSID at factory) A. Use standard screw driver and turn screw located on the outside of the differential pressure switch clockwise to increase the setting (½ turn =3.5 psid), (see drawing WP0008, item 27). PROBLEM: LOSS OF SAND IN THE FILTER REASON: Cracked lateral or header A. Drain filter, remove sand and replace lateral or header. REASON: Flow rate is above recommended limit for backwashing A. Throttle isolation valve on the city water inlet. B. Install a flow controller or restrictor on the waste outlet.
