General information Split shaft power take-offs are located between the gearbox and the driving axles. The power take-off disengages the driving axles and redistributes all available power from the propeller shaft to those functions the power take-off is to drive. The split shaft power take-off is mainly used when very large power outputs are required. General information Information on how power take-offs can be combined is found in the document Power take-off combinations. This document describes a function that activates the power take-off by using a switch. The switch may be located in the instrument panel or on the outside of the cab. The power take-off must be controlled by using the BCI control unit (Bodywork Communication Interface) to achieve full functionality: Compensation for increased load on the gearbox and some engine functions Safety functions System monitoring Reduced risk of malfunctions in other vehicle systems The silencer is regenerated automatically in vehicles with Euro 6 emission class. This means that the vehicle s control units control the engine speed and power output, which affects the power take-off. To ensure that the power take-off works with a stable speed, the connection must always be made via preparations from Scania or via the BCI control unit. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 1 (27)

Retrofitting the power take-off A split shaft power take-off is always retrofitted. To facilitate the work, electrical preparation can be ordered from the factory. If the vehicle lacks electrical preparation from the factory, the following must be carried out before a power take-off can be retrofitted: General information Retrofitting and installation of cable harness and BCI control unit. The SOPS-file (Scania On-board Product Specification) must be updated. Contact a Scania workshop to prepare the vehicle for the installation of a split shaft power take-off. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 2 (27)

Power take-off behaviour Power take-off activation and acknowledgement are available as separate functions in BICT (Bodywork Interface Configuration Tool). Values that define the behaviour of the functions are adjusted by using parameter settings in SDP3 for bodybuilders. More information on BICT and SDP3 for bodybuilders is found under the headings Activation and Connection. Power take-off behaviour Information on adjustable parameters is found in the document Parameters Powertrain. Using the power take-off for stationary or rolling operation Split shaft power take-offs are commonly used during stationary operation, when the vehicle is standing still, as the power transmission to the half shafts is disengaged. Split shaft power take-offs can also be used for rolling operation. In this case, a power source other than the vehicle s engine must be connected to the half shafts. This can be done with hydraulic driving, for example. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 3 (27)

Using direct gear during operation Power take-off behaviour IMPORTANT! Use the direct gear in the main gearbox when the power take-off is in operation. This minimises the generation of heat in the gearbox. Direct gear means that the gearbox has a gear ratio of 1:1. Select direct gear as follows: Select the next highest gear for gearbox with overdrive, GRSO. Select the highest gear for gearbox without overdrive, GR and GRS. When engaging the power take-off in accordance with the instructions in this document, the Opticruise control unit will engage the direct gear automatically if the following conditions have been fulfilled: The BCI control unit receives an acknowledgement signal that the power take-off is activated. The gear lever is in the D position. The clutch pedal is depressed, if the vehicle is equipped with one. Note: The power take-off must be activated so that the BCI control unit receives the acknowledgement signal before the gear lever is moved to the D position. If the gear lever is moved to the D position before the BCI control unit has received the acknowledgement signal, the normal starting gear will be engaged automatically. By using SDP3 for bodybuilders, it is possible to set the gear that is to be engaged at power take-off activation. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 4 (27)

Control of engine speed during operation The engine normally has a standard protection condition which means that the engine speed drops down to idling speed when a gear is engaged at the same time as the parking brake, brake or clutch pedal is activated. When the engine is driving the vehicle s half shafts, this prevents the brakes and engine from counteracting each other. Power take-off behaviour More information on the protection condition is found in the document Engine speed control. When the engine is driving the power take-off instead of the half shafts, it must be possible to control the engine speed. Therefore, the function for controlling the engine speed for engine speed control must be used when a split shaft power take-off is in operation. If other alternatives for engine speed control are used, hand throttle for example, the engine speed control can be deactivated when using the parking brake or brake pedal. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 5 (27)

Moving the road speed sensor for correct registration The road speed sensor is normally located on the gearbox s outgoing half shaft. For the road speed sensor to register the vehicle speed when the power take-off is in operation, it must be moved to the rear axle ingoing half shaft. The road speed sensor must be moved for the following functions to work: Power take-off behaviour Correct registration of speed and distance driven. The tachograph registers correct information. The control units for brakes and gearbox do not generate any fault codes due to a vehicle speed being registered at the same time as, for example, the parking brake is applied. Selecting type of road speed sensor Scania recommends that a road speed sensor with the same number of cogs on the sensor wheel is used. The sensor will then generate the same number of pulses per revolution. When renewing with a road speed sensor with another number of cogs, the SOPS file (Scania On-board Product Specification) must be updated by using SDP3 for bodybuilders. The following variants are available: Option Rotational speed constant for road speed sensors Pulses per revolution Variant code A D Variant code1541b for transfer gearbox is not shown in the table as Scania recommends not to use split shaft power take-offs for all-wheel drive vehicles. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 6 (27)

Vehicles with fully automated Opticruise Power take-off behaviour On vehicles with fully automated Opticruise, the accelerator pedal controls the clutch. The following then applies to clutch control: The clutch closes when the accelerator pedal is depressed. The accelerator pedal controls the closing of the clutch. The more the accelerator pedal is depressed, the quicker it closes. The clutch opens if the accelerator pedal is released before the clutch is fully closed. Put the drive mode selector in position N (neutral) to disengage the driving of the power take-off. Note: The parameter value Braking in operation with split shaft power take-off controls whether the clutch should open when the brake pedal is applied or whether it should remain closed. The default value is for the clutch to open. The value can be changed by using SDP3 for bodybuilders. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 7 (27)

Protective logic for disengagement When the power take-off is disengaged, and the driving wheel axles are engaged, the torque and rotational speed of the propeller shaft must be reduced to levels which are low enough not to cause mechanical damage to the equipment. Usually the user reduces the engine speed by putting the main gearbox into neutral before the power take-off is turned off by using the switch. Power take-off behaviour IMPORTANT! Use a protective circuit to protect the vehicle from user errors that can cause mechanical damage. The function of the protective circuit is to keep the power take-off in operation until the main gearbox output rotational speed is sufficiently low. Create the protective circuit by using BICT and SDP3 for bodybuilders. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 8 (27)

Activation acknowledgement On vehicles with electrical preparation for split shaft power take-off fitted at the factory, a lamp comes on in the instrument cluster when one or more power take-off(s) is/are activated. If the vehicle has several power take-offs, it is not clear which power take-off is active. Each power take-off sends a unique acknowledgement signal to other systems in the vehicle which need to know which power take-off is activated. 1 Power take-off behaviour If the vehicle is equipped with BCI functionality and with preparation for indicator lamps and display messages in the instrument cluster (ICL), it is possible to use indicator lamps 1-8 to show which power take-off is active. More information on the use of indicator lamps in the instrument cluster (ICL) is found in the document Bodywork information in the instrument cluster (ICL). Undesired engine vibrations Cylinder balancing means that the amount of fuel in each cylinder is controlled to reduce vibrations from the engine Indicator lamp for acknowledgement of power take-off activation. 2. Indicator lamps 1-8 can be used for acknowledgement when activating different power take-offs In certain conditions, cylinder balancing can make the engine vibrations more powerful. In these cases, the function can be deactivated with the Cylinder balancing parameter in SDP3 for bodybuilders. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 9 (27)

Power take-off activation Switch for activation must of the 2-position switch type. Power take-off activation There are different types of signals which can be used to generate an activation signal: Signal type Description Activation method Internal vehicle signal Signal from a factory-fitted function. Logic diagram in BICT (Bodywork Interface Communication Analogue signal Signal from a retrofitted function. Connected by the bodybuilder via connector C259 in the bodywork console. Tool) and parameter setting by using SDP3 for bodybuilders. External CAN a network Digital communication between control units. CAN message. a. Controller Area Network Information on CAN messages is found in the document External CAN Communication Specification. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 11 (27)

Activation using internal and analogue signals Different functions in the vehicle are factors that affect the activation. Power take-off activation Internal signals come from a function fitted at the factory. Examples of factors that can affect the activation by using internal signals are applied parking brake and gearbox in neutral position. Use analogue signals when a factor does not generate an internal signal as above. Examples of factors that can affect the activation by using analogue signals are an activated switch in the instrument panel and a sensor on the chassis or bodywork. Define when and how the activation is to take place by using BICT and SDP3 for bodybuilders: 1. Create a logic diagram in BICT that defines which factors shall affect the activation. 2. Define parameters in SDP3 for bodybuilders which state the conditions for how and when the different factors shall affect the activation. The logic diagram is transferred, together with the parameters, to the vehicle s BCI control unit using SDP3 for bodybuilders. More information on BICT is found in the document BCI, Bodywork Communication Interface. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 12 (27)

Activation by using external CAN network When a vehicle is equipped with BCI functionality, a connection to the external CAN network via connector C493 for bodywork is included. Power take-off activation The external CAN network is activated by using SDP3 for bodybuilders. A CAN message defines when and how the function is to be activated. Connection can be made either via an expansion unit or an external control unit. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 13 (27)

Activation options There are 3 different options for when a power take-off is to be activated. Activation options are defined by using parameter setting in SDP3 for bodybuilders. Possible values: Power take-off activation Manual Automatic Drive position The automatic and drive mode options require BCI functionality. If the vehicle lacks BCI functionality, only the manual option is possible. Select the activation option by using SDP3 for bodybuilders. More information on adjustable parameters for activation options is found in the document Parameters Powertrain. Manual For manual activation, all activation conditions must be fulfilled before the power take-off can be activated with the switch. If the switch is activated when the activation conditions are fulfilled, the switch must be deactivated and reactivated for the power take-off to be activated. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 14 (27)

Power take-off activation Automatic For automatic activation, the power take-off is activated when all activation conditions are fulfilled. The switch does not need to be activated last in this case. The voltage must be activated before the switch is activated. Otherwise the switch must be deactivated and reactivated. Drive position When activating with the Drive position setting, the same conditions apply as for Automatic activation, although the voltage does not need to be activated before the switch. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 15 (27)

Activation conditions Power take-off activation Split shaft power take-offs have one permanent and a number of selectable activation conditions, the parameters for which can be set by using SDP3 for bodybuilders. The activation conditions are there to protect the bodywork equipment. Selectable activation conditions in all vehicles Selectable activation conditions in vehicles with BCI functionality Permanent activation conditions Parking brake applied Neutral position The vehicle is stationary. Reverse gear Upper engine speed limit Lower engine speed limit Information on adjustable parameters for selectable activation conditions is found in the document Parameters Powertrain. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 16 (27)

Power take-off deactivation Power take-off deactivation Manual deactivation Deactivate a power take-off by deactivating the switch. If the power take-off is controlled by CAN message, the power take-off is deactivated when the activation request is cancelled. Automatic deactivation For vehicles with factory-fitted power take-offs there are a number of selectable deactivation conditions, the parameters for which can be set by using SDP3 for bodybuilders. The power take-off is deactivated when a deactivation condition has been fulfilled. Selectable deactivation conditions for all vehicles Parking brake applied Selectable deactivation conditions for vehicles with BCI functionality Neutral position Reverse gear Upper engine speed limit Lower engine speed limit Upper vehicle speed limit Lower vehicle speed limit Information on adjustable parameters for selectable deactivation conditions is found in the document Parameters Powertrain. Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 17 (27)

Power take-off connection The installation of split shaft power take-offs is always carried out by the bodybuilder. Power take-off connection Connecting the acknowledgement sensor Split shaft power take-offs must always have an acknowledgement sensor. The acknowledgement sensor will generate an acknowledgement signal when the power take-off is activated and works correctly. Connect the acknowledgement sensor to connector C259. The acknowledgement signal controls the indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. More information on connection to C259 is found in the document Connector C259 BCI-controlled functions. More information on the use of indicator lamps in the instrument cluster (ICL) is found in the document Bodywork information in the instrument cluster (ICL). Scania CV AB 2017, Sweden 18 (27)
