5 AD1240 DESCRIPTION, FEATURES, and MAINTENANCE Figure 1 - AD1240 Champion Pan/Tilt DESCRIPTION The AD1240 Champion Series is a motorized camera pan/tilt designed to handle loads of a maximum of 45 lbs. The rugged design, excellent weather resistance, and high torque drive allow the AD1240 to meet the demanding work loads of modern CCTV control systems. The side-load design of the AD1240 eliminates the need to counterbalance the camera load, which is often required with over the top pan/tilts. Smooth camera movement and low power consumption are additional benefits. In applications where presets are required, models are available with factory installed feedback potentiometers. FEATURES MAINTENANCE The AD1240 Series Pan/Tilt contains no user-serviceable parts. It is recommended that the following checks be carried out on a routine basis: One month after installation and every six months thereafter, check the tightness and security of all external fastenings. Every six months check all electrical cables for signs of wear. Replace if necessary. At no time should this Pan/Tilt be rotated or positioned by hand. Doing so will cause irreversible damage to the gears and transmission parts. 45 lbs Load Capacity Efficient Side-Load Design Low Profile Configuration NEMA-6 Protection Rating Heavy Duty AC Synchronous Motors 24 VAC Input 7.3 /Sec Pan Speed, 3.6 /Sec Tilt Speed Powder Coat Enamel Finish Long Life Gear Assembly Models Available with Presets, and internal AutoPan or internal Heater 1

6 INSTALLATION INSTALLATION This installation should be made by qualified service personnel and should conform to all local codes. Take precautions to avoid unintentional operation by employees and maintenance personnel working about the premises, by falling objects, by customers, by building vibration, and by similar causes. Note: Install an easily accessible, multi-pole power disconnect near the AD1240 to allow for safe isolation of the unit during servicing. A low-resistance safety ground is required. Before installation, make sure that: The contents of the AD1240 shipping carton are correct and intact (see Shipping Contents list, below). The correct tools are available for installing the unit. The correct mounting bracket has been chosen to support the weight of the pan/tilt and camera without vibration (see Optional Mounting Brackets list, below). 10 CONNECTIONS CONNECTIONS Before starting any electrical connection: Make sure the cable being used has the correct voltage and current rating for the application. Do NOT exceed the stated drive voltage for the AD1240 on any of the input pins (24VAC). If installing an AD1240 model with presets, make sure the potentiometer wiper is not connected to the supply voltage. If the model has either the AutoPan or Heater feature, make sure the drive voltage supplied at the input pins for either model is 24VAC ±10%. All control voltages to the AD1240 must be wired to the connector. A mating connector is supplied, according to the model (AD1240 or AD1240P, see contents list, page 2).! DO NOT CARRY OUT ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS IN WET WEATHER CONDITIONS. Typical connections of the AD1240 Series Pan/Tilt to AD1641 Series Receiver/Drivers are illustrated in the Typical System Connection section at the end of this manual. Note: Following electrical connections to the AD1240 AutoPan models (AD1240/24A or AD1240/24PA), the unit must be set for the proper AutoPan ends stops. See Setup, page 12, for setting the end stops for AutoPan operation. Wire Selection The following table shows wire gauge versus the maximum distance between the pan/tilt and the voltage controlling source (e.g., Receiver/Driver). For the AD1240 models with presets, shielded cable is recommended for most applications. AWG Distance (ft) Note: Distances calculations are based on solid copper wire, single common, and worst case current draw (i.e., diagonal pan/tilt operation). Wiring AD1240 The connection wiring for the AD1240 depends on the model. The models without Preset capability (AD1240/24, AD1240/24A, and AD1240/24H) are connected using a 7- pin connector. A mating 7-pin connector assembly is provided. See page 7 for wiring this connector. The models with Preset capability (AD1240/24P, AD1240/24PA, and AD1240/24PH) are connected using a 13-pin connector. A mating 13-pin connector assembly is provided. See page 8 for wiring this connector. Following the connector wiring, attach the cable to the AD1240 chassis using the cable strain relief assembly on the bottom of the main body. See page 10 for attaching the cable to the strain relief assembly. 6

12 CONNECTIONS AD1240 Pre-Position Model Connections The following connection instructions are for models with Preset capability. This includes the following models: AD1240/24P - Preset model AD1240/24PA - Preset with AutoPan AD1240/24PH - Preset with Heater The connector for Pan/Tilt and pre-position (Preset) control is a 13-pin connector located on the rear panel of the AD1240. On the AutoPan and Heater models, this connector also supplies the appropriate voltage (24VAC) for these functions. A mating connector assembly is supplied for connections. The pre-position feedback is achieved by high-grade servo potentiometers within the AD1240. These potentiometers are used to feedback positional information from the AD1240 to the external control system (e.g., Receiver/Driver). Check the polarity of the reference voltage connected to the AD1240 to insure that movement of the unit causes the feedback voltage to operate in the correct polarity for the control system, i.e., panning right increases the pan wiper voltage, tilt up increases the tilt wiper voltage. Note: If the polarity is not correct, the unit will not find its correct PRESET position. If a correction is necessary, reverse the polarity of the reference supply connections. Refer to the following table and Figure 8 for the AD1240 preset model pin definitions. Shielded cable is recommended for most applications with the AD1240 preset models. 14 CONNECTIONS AD1240 Cable Strain Relief The AD1240 Pan/Tilt is provided with a cable strain relief to secure the power and signal connection cable to the main body. This prevents accidental damage and chafing of the cable during panning operation. The connecting cable must be attached to the strain relief assembly at the bottom of the AD1240 main body. Two tiedown anchors are provided for attaching the cable to the main body. The strain relief assembly is shown in Figure 10, below, and its locations on the bottom of the main body are illustrated in Figures 11 and 12 on page 11. The AD1240 is delivered with the anchors attached to the channel in the bottom of the main body, as illustrated in Figure 10, below. Two tie-wraps are provided separately, in the package of mounting hardware supplied with the AD1240. Note: If the tie-wrap anchors are not attached to the main body at delivery, or are removed for any reason, attach both to the main body bottom channel, as shown in Figure 10, before mounting the AD1240 to a mounting bracket. To attach the connection cable to the strain relief assembly: 1. After wiring and assembly of the appropriate connector, pages 7-9, connect the finished connector assembly to the rear panel connector of the AD Feed each tie-wrap through the two anchors on the bottom of the main body. (See Figure 10.) 3. Place the cable snug against the two anchors on the bottom of the main body. (See Figure 12.) 4. Connect the tie-wraps around the cable, leaving enough slack to adjust the cable. 5. Connect the cable inputs to an appropriate power source and verify proper panning operation, in the full range desired. Adjust the cable position in the tie-wraps as necessary to prevent binding. 6. Disconnect power and secure the tie-wraps on the cable. NUT AD1240 MAIN BODY BOTTOM CHANNEL TIE-WRAP ANCHOR BOLT CABLE TIE-WRAP Figure 10 - Cable Strain Relief Assembly 10

16 SETUP SETUP The AD1240 has two adjustable end stop switches which limit the angle of travel for both the pan axis and the tilt axis. Set these end stop switches to suit the site conditions. For models with AutoPan, these end stops determine the end points of the automatic panning action.! CAUTION - Due to the presence of noninsulated components with hazardous voltages, the following internal adjustments should be performed by qualified service personnel only. AD1240 STRIKER ADJUSTMENT Set the limit striker arms for the desired angle of travel to suit the application. For Preset models, perform the Axis Alignment (preceding paragraph) prior to this adjustment. 1. Push the appropriate adjustment arm in the desired angular position for limit control of the Right/Left (Pan axis), and/or the Up/Down (Tilt axis) direction. Adjust the limit strikers with finger pressure only. The following are typical pan or tilt angle limit settings. End Stop Limit Adjustment SWITCH LOCATION The limit switches for both Pan and Tilt movement are located inside the AD1240 main body. To access the limit switches, remove the four bolts on the front cover of the unit (opposite the external connector) using the supplied 3 mm Allen wrench, and remove the cover. The limit switches are located on the top plate of the pan axis and tilt axis gearboxes (see Figures 13 and 14). The adjustable limit strikers are located on the end of each axis main shaft (see Figure 14). AXIS ALIGNMENT (Preset models only) Before setting the limit strikers in the Preset models, the unit must be aligned for proper travel of the preset potentiometer. This alignment is important to prevent operation of the AD1240 past the designed limits of travel. Alignment marks (red dots) are provided on each axis main gear and gearbox (see Figures 13 and 14, page 13) to assist in aligning the unit. The AD1240, as shipped from the factory, is set at the proper alignment positions for setting the limit strikers. It is recommended that you confirm correct lateral and vertical alignment of the actuator. Alignment by the user is necessary only if the end stops are to be changed after operation of the unit. Align each axis by aligning the red mark on each main gear with the red mark on the associated gearbox. (refer to Figures 13 and 14 on page 13). Perform this alignment only by applying control voltages (24VAC, ±10%) to the applicable connector pins (Pan Left or Right, and Tilt Up or Down). Note: DO NOT attempt to rotate or position either axis by hand, as this will cause irreversible damage to the gears and transmission parts. 180º Limits 90º Limits 359º Limits The maximum Tilt setting is ±90, or 180 limits. Note: For Preset models, be careful not to push either striker arm past the red axis alignment marks (see Figures 13 and 14). The two striker arms must be positioned on either side of the mark - do not locate both arms on one side of the mark as illustrated below. 2. Verify proper operation of the unit at both end stops before re-attaching the front cover to the AD1240. Note: Be careful when verifying operation of the unit - any movement of the unit while the cover is removed may cause damage to the unit. 3. Refit the front cover onto the AD1240 and tighten the four 3 mm bolts holding the cover. AutoPan Setup Improper Striker Setting Main Gear Alignment Mark The AutoPan models (AD1240/24A or AD1240/24PA) must be set for the proper AutoPan ends stops. This is accomplished by adjusting the Pan axis limit strikers to the desired end stop positions, as above. When the AutoPan signal is applied (24VAC ±10% to pin 6), the unit continuously pans between the two end stops, until the signal is removed. 12
