OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS COVERS MODEL 4210

WARNING Please read and follow all the instructions in this and the accompanying manuals in order to avoid serious damage to your model. If these instructions are not followed, the resulting damage will be considered abuse and/or neglect thereby releasing both Traxxas and your dealer from further warranty responsibility. INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing the new Traxxas Street Sport car. Your new Street Sport incorporates two great features designed to create a whole new standard for parking lot racing... direct drive and four-wheel independent suspension. This manual contains the instructions you will need to operate and maintain your new Street Sport. If, for some reason, you think the Street Sport is not what you wanted, then do not continue any farther. Your hobby dealer absolutely cannot accept a Street Sport for return or exchange after it has been run, or after any of the parts bags have been opened. Please read all of the Operating Instructions and precautions before attempting to drive your new Street Sport. These instructions are written with the assumption that this is your first electric model. Even if you are an experienced R/C enthusiast, please continue reading to learn about the special features that make the Street Sport so unique. Pay special attention to the mechanical and safety precautions outlined in the manuals. This manual includes basic steps for operating the radio system on Street Sport model SUPPORT REQUIRED EQUIPMENT To operate the Street Sport, you will need these additional tools and accessories. All of these items should be available from your local hobby shop. 1. Eight AA size batteries for your transmitter 2. One 7.2V rechargeable Nicad battery pack 3. Battery charger for the 7.2V Nicad pack 4. Small Phillips head and flat screwdrivers (for adjustments) 5. Hobby knife for cutting the decals WHERE TO RUN Select an area that is isolated from people and traffic. Avoid areas that are near water (pools, lakes, etc). Run the model only on dry surfaces. Mud and water will damage the electronic components and increase the wear on all mechanical parts. When choosing an area to run, always consider what would happen if you lost control of the car at full throttle. CHARGE THE BATTERIES The Street Sport requires a fully charged 7.2 volt Nicad battery pack (not included). You can use either side-by-side racing style pack or the more common stick pack. The battery compartment on the Street Sport is designed to handle both. The Street Sport's run time is greatly affected by the milliamp hour (mah) rating of the batteries. A 3000 mah battery pack will theoretically run twice as long as a 1500 mah sport pack. We recommend that you use a high-capacity battery and a high-quality peak detecting charger to charge the battery. Because it takes some time to charge batteries, begin charging your battery now as you get the Street Sport ready to drive. Follow the charger manufacturer s directions for charging and caring for your battery packs. If you have any questions about your new model, feel free to call Traxxas technical support line toll-free at TRAXXAS ( ). Outside the U.S. call Technical support is available Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM Central Time. Technical support is also available through our website at You can also us at support@traxxas.com. We hope that you will enjoy many hours of fun with your new Street Sport. Side-by-side Stick pack If the precautions are followed, and your Street Sport is operated sensibly and with care at all times, it is exciting, safe, and fun for you and your spectators. Failure to operate your Street Sport in a safe and responsible manner could result in property damage and injury. You alone must see to it that the instructions are followed and the precautions are adhered to. The Street Sport is not intended for use by children without the supervision of a responsible adult. Every precaution outlined in this manual should be followed to help ensure safe operation. Traxxas Corporation shall not be liable for any loss or damages, whether direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential, arising from the use, misuse, or abuse of this product and any chemical or accessory required to operate this product. PERSONAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Even though this model is named Street Sport, It is not intended for use on public roads or congested areas where its operation can conflict with or disrupt pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Do not drive the Street Sport at night. Never, under any circumstances, operate the Street Sport in crowds of people. The Street Sport is very fast and could cause injury if allowed to collide with anyone. Because the Street Sport is controlled by radio, it is subject to radio interference from many sources that are beyond your control. Since radio interference can cause momentary losses of radio control, always allow a safety margin in all directions around the car in order to prevent collisions. Most importantly, use good, common sense. 2 Contact Traxxas for assistance: TRAXXAS (outside USA). us at support@traxxas.com

THE RADIO SYSTEM The following definitions will be used throughout the rest of these operating instructions. TWO-CHANNEL RADIO SYSTEM - The radio system in your model consists of the RECEIVER, the TRANSMITTER, the SER- VOS, and the CRYSTALS. It has two channels, one to operate the throttle, and one to operate the steering. TRANSMITTER - The TRANSMITTER is the hand-held radio unit which sends throttle and steering instructions to the model. Antenna Throttle Neutral Adjust NICAD (Ni-Cd), NiMh - These terms stand for rechargeable, nickel cadmium or nickel metal hydride (NiMh) batteries. These batteries are most economical and can be recharged up to 500 times. NEUTRAL POSITION - The NEUTRAL POSITION is the standing position that the SERVOS seek when the TRANSMITTER controls are at neutral. TRIM - TRIM is the fine-tuning adjustment of the NEUTRAL POSITION of the SERVOS. This adjustment is made by turning the throttle and steering trim knobs on the face of the TRANSMITTER. PREPARING TO RUN INSTALLING TRANSMITTER BATTERIES Throttle Trim Steering Trim Power Switch Battery Compartment Power Indicator Steering Wheel Throttle Trigger Servo Reversing Switches Steering (R), Throttle (L) Your transmitter uses 8 AA size batteries. They should be alkaline dry cells or nicad rechargeable batteries. The battery compartment is located in the bottom of the transmitter. To remove the battery door, push on the tab and lift open the door. Be sure that the switch is turned off before installing the batteries. Insert the batteries into the battery compartment making careful note of the polarity. Now, snap the battery door back into place. RECEIVER BATTERIES The Traxxas receiver is equipped with B.E.C. (battery eliminator circuitry). This circuit eliminates the need to carry a separate 4- cell battery pack in the model to power the radio system. No extra receiver batteries are required. ANTENNA SETUP RECEIVER - The RECEIVER is the radio unit inside the model which receives signals from the TRANSMITTER and relays them to the SERVOS. SERVO - The SERVOS are the small motor units in the model which operate the steering and throttle mechanisms. Locate the plastic tube and the vinyl antenna tip (supplied in the bag with your instructions). Insert the black antenna wire (coming out of the receiver in the model) into one end of the tube, and push it all the way through. Spray glass cleaner on the wire to help it go through. FREQUENCY BAND - The FREQUENCY band is the radio frequency that the transmitter uses to send signals to the model. The FREQUENCY BAND for radio control vehicles is 27 MHZ. CHANNEL - The 27 MHZ FREQUENCY BAND is divided into 6 CHANNELS, so that up to six cars can be operated simultaneously. These CHANNELS are referred to by their number and flag color. The chart below lists the channels and their flag colors. 27MHZ FLAG COLOR CH# TRAXXAS PART# BROWN RED ORANGE YELLOW GREEN BLUE Insert the tube into the slot on the chassis. Route the remaining antenna wire neatly in the chassis. Place the antenna tip over the end of the tube to secure the wire. Under no circumstances should you ever cut your antenna wire. Its length is specially tuned to the frequency band, and cutting it could severely shorten the radio s range. CRYSTAL (X-TAL) - The CRYSTAL is the plug-in device that determines which channel (1-6) the RADIO SYSTEM will operate on. For Each CHANNEL, there are two CRYSTALS, one for the RECEIVER and one for the TRANSMITTER. Of those two CRYS- TALS, the one marked with the lower number (.455 MHZ lower) must be inserted in the RECEIVER. CLEARING YOUR FREQUENCY - CLEARING your frequency means checking to be sure no one else in the area is operating on the same CHANNEL as you. You should always do this before operating your model. On top of the transmitter, extend the chrome telescopic antenna. Contact Traxxas for assistance: TRAXXAS (outside USA). us at support@traxxas.com 3

INSTALLING THE BODY MOUNTS Attach the front body posts to the front bumper with the two 3x10mm countersunk self tapping screws provided. The front body posts are longer than necessary so that an alternate body shell may be used. You may choose to leave the body posts long to accommodate a variety of body shells, but it hinders the scale appearance of the model. If you d like to cut the body posts to the proper size you may do so by cutting the excess material off with a pair of wire cutters. For a neater finish, use a hobby saw as shown in the photo (see figure A-2). Figure A-2 Place the body clip in the fifth hole from the bottom of the front body mounts. Place a body washer over the front posts. RADIO SYSTEM OPERATION Your radio system was pre-adjusted before it left the factory; however, the adjustment should be checked prior to running the model. These instructions are for Traxxas radio systems only. Attach the rear body mount posts onto the body mount base with the supplied body mount clamps and 3x14mm washerhead self tapping screws. Two body mount clamps and two 3x14mm WST screws are required to secure each body posts to the body post base. Body height adjustment is accomplished by loosening the screws and adjusting the body posts to the appropriate height. 1) Before you ever turn your radio system on, you must clear your frequency. Clearing your frequency means checking to be sure that no one else in the area is operating on the same channel as you. There are six different channels numbered 1 through 6. Each of the six channels is represented by a color. Look at the crystal on the back of the transmitter to determine which of the channels your model is operating on. 2) Always turn the transmitter on first, before you plug in the battery pack in the model. TIP: Always turn the transmitter on first and off last. Slide the transmitter switch to the on position. A steady red light should illuminate. A flashing red light indicates weak batteries. Weak batteries will limit the range of the radio signal between your transmitter and receiver. Loss of the radio signal can cause you to lose control of the car. INSTALLING THE BODY You may now install the body. Adjustments may be necessary in order to attain the proper body height and ample wheel clearance. If necessary, raise or lower the rear body posts to attain the proper body height (see figure A-1). Figure A-1 3) Elevate the model so that the rear tires are off the ground. Plug the nicad battery in the model into the speed control. The servo and speed control should jump and move to their idle (neutral) position. CAUTION: When nicad batteries begin to lose their charge, they will fade much faster than alkaline dry cells. Stop immediately at the first sign of weak batteries. Never turn the transmitter off when the battery pack is plugged in. The model could run out of control. 4) If the motor started running when you turned the model on, then slowly adjust the trim control on the transmitter until the motor stop. If a large adjustment of the trim control on the 4 Contact Traxxas for assistance: TRAXXAS (outside USA). us at support@traxxas.com

transmitter is required, then it may be necessary to re-center the throttle servo. Now operate the throttle trigger to ensure that you have full forward and reverse operation, and that the motor stops when the throttle trigger is at neutral. 5) Operate the steering control on the transmitter (channel 1). Check for rapid operation of the steering servo and that none of the steering mechanism is loose or binding. If the servo operates slowly, check for weak batteries. Turn the steering trim control on the transmitter to adjust the servo so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead. Check to be sure that the wheels do not turn more in one direction than in the other. If you cannot align the front wheels, you will have to re-center your steering servo (see Centering Your Servos in the Adjustments section). Hold the steering wheel with just your fingertips! If you grip the wheel with your entire hand, you may be able to exert enough force to break the steering mechanism by overturning. Overturning the wheel is not covered by warranty. Use good, common sense whenever you are driving your Street Sport. Intentionally driving in an abusive and rough manner will only result in poor performance and broken parts. Take care of your car, so that you can enjoy it for a long time to come. ADJUSTMENTS CAMBER The camber angle of both the front and rear wheels cannot be adjusted using the stock camber rods. The wheels are set to 0 degrees of camber (wheel is perpendicular to the ground). By installing optional turnbuckles (see your parts list), the camber angles can be adjusted. These adjustments should be set with the car positioned at its normal ride height. Use a square or rightangle triangle to set the camber accurately. Negative camber Positive camber 6) The radio system should be range-tested before each session of running. With the radio system on, have a friend carry the radio away from you a distance equal to the maximum range you plan to operate the the model. At distance, once again test for complete radio control. Never attempt to run the model if the radio appears to be malfunctioning in any way. The model could run out of control. VISUAL INSPECTION Form the habit of visually inspecting the mechanical integrity of the Street Sport before each run. 1) Check the wheels and steering for binding. 2) Check the operation of the shock absorbers. 3) Check the wiring for any frayed wires or loose connections. 4) Check the mounting of the receiver, servos, and speed control. 5) Check the tightness of the wheel nuts with a wrench. 6 Check the operation of the radio system, especially the condition of the batteries. 7) Check for any loose screws in the chassis structure or suspension. 8) The steering servo saver will wear out over time. If the steering becomes loose, the servo saver should be replaced. DRIVING PRECAUTIONS Allow the motor and battery to cool between runs The radio system is not waterproof. Avoid driving through puddles or mud. If water gets into the electronics it could damage them. Do not continue to operate Street Sport with low batteries or you could lose control of it. After the battery power drops below a certain point, the model will continue with the last command it had from the transmitter. Indications of low battery power include slow operation and sluggish servos (slow to return to neutral). Stop immediately at the first sign of weak batteries. When the batteries in the transmitter become weak, the red power light will begin to flash. Stop immediately and install new batteries, or you could lose control of your model. Do not drive the Street Sport at night, on public streets, or in large crowds of people. If the Street Sport becomes stuck against an object, do not continue to run the motor. Remove the obstruction before continuing to drive. Do not attempt to push objects or tow objects with the Street Sport. Because the Street Sport is controlled by radio, it is subject to radio interference from many sources beyond your control. Since radio interference can cause momentary losses of control, allow a safety margin of space in all directions around the Street Sport in order to prevent collisions. TOE IN Geometry and alignment specs play an important roll in your car s handling. Take the time to set them correctly. Set the steering trim on your transmitter to neutral. Now, adjust your servo and tie rods so that both wheels are pointing straight ahead and are parallel to each other (0 degrees toe in). This will ensure the 0 o Toe-in same amount of steering in both directions. For increased stability add 1-2 degrees of toe in to each front wheel. Use the turnbuckles to adjust the alignment. (Toe-in and Toe-out photos shown below are exaggerated. Do not adjust visually to illustrations). Toe-in Toe-out Contact Traxxas for assistance: TRAXXAS (outside USA). us at support@traxxas.com 5

SHOCKS The four shocks on Street Sport greatly influence its handling. Whenever you rebuild your shocks, or make any changes to the pistons, springs or oil, always do it carefully and in pairs (front or rear). Piston head selection depends on the range of oil viscosities that you have available. For example, using a two-hole piston with a lightweight oil will, at one point, give you the same dampening as a three-hole piston with heavier oil. We recommend using the two-hole pistons with a range of oil viscosities from 10W to 50W (available from your hobby shop). The thinner viscosity oils (30W or less) flow more smoothly and are more consistent, while thicker oils provide more dampening. Use only 100% pure silicone shock oil to prolong seal life. The ride height for Street Sport can be adjusted by adding or removing the clip-on spring pre-load spacers. Adjust the ride height so that the suspension arms are slightly above being parallel to the ground. Observe how Street Sport handles in turns. Proper set-up will add stability and help prevent spin outs. Experiment with different settings to find out what works on your track and conditions. GEAR RATIOS Street Sport will allow you to adjust the gearing over a broad range. Use the following formula to calculate the overall ratio: # SPUR GEAR TEETH = FINAL DRIVE RATIO # PINION GEAR TEETH PINION GEAR SPUR Street Sport is equipped with a 100-tooth spur gear and an 18- tooth pinion gear. This combination will provide good overall acceleration and top speed. If you want more acceleration and less top speed, use a smaller pinion gear (fewer teeth). For more top speed, use a larger pinion gear BALL DIFFERENTIAL The ball differential can be adjusted by removing the rubber cap from the top of the gearbox and inserting the 1.5mm allen wrench (provided) through the hole. Push down on the wrench and rotate to tighten the diff, or counterclockwise to loosen it (see figure A-4). The preliminary setting for the ball diff is to tighten it until it stops and then back it off 1/4 of a turn. The range of adjustment from that point is plus or minus 1/8 of a turn. Adjust the Ball diff for the best cornering performance on your track conditions. Do not run the ball differential so loose that you can see and hear it slipping while the Street Sport is accelerating. This could damage your differential. Figure A-4 CENTERING THE SERVOS With the radio components out of the model, connect the steering servo to channel 1 on the receiver. Connect speed control to channel 2. Place fresh AA batteries in the transmitter and turn the power switch on. Turn the throttle and steering trim adjustments on the transmitter to the center 0 position. Plug a freshly-charged battery pack into the speed control. The servos will jump to their center position. Now, unplug the battery pack and turn off the transmitter. Be careful not to move the servo shafts when installing the servos into your model. MAINTENANCE CHASSIS: Keep the chassis clean of accumulated dirt and grime. Periodically inspect the chassis for damage STEERING: Over time, you may notice increased looseness in the steering system. There are several components which will wear out from use: the servo saver (Traxxas part#4244), and the tie rod ends (Traxxas part #2742). Replace these components as needed to restore factory tolerances. MOTOR: Every runs, remove, clean, and lubricate the motor. Use a product such as electric motor cleaning spray to flush dirt out of the motor. After cleaning, lubricate the bushings at each end of the motor with a drop of lightweight electric motor oil. the left wheel until the wrench locks into the hole in the differential housing. Continue to push on the wrench and rotate the wheel until the wrench is fully inserted into the transmission (see figure A-3). This locks the diff. Now, turn the right rear wheel clockwise Figure A-3 SHOCKS: Keep the oil level in the shocks full. Use only 100% pure silicon shock oil to prolong the life of the seals. If you are experiencing leakage around the top of the shock, inspect the bladder in the top cap for signs of damage or distortion from overtightening. If the bottom of the shock is leaking, then it is time for a rebuild. The Traxxas rebuild kit for two shocks is part#2362. SUSPENSION: Periodically inspect the car for signs of damage such as bent or dirty suspension pins, bent turnbuckles, loose screws, and any signs of stress or bending. Replace components as needed. DRIVELINE: Inspect the driveline for signs of wear such as worn drive yokes, dirty axle half shafts, and any unusual noise or binding. If a U-joint pops apart then it is time to replace the part. Remove the gear cover and Inspect the spur gear for wear and check the tightness of grub screw in the pinion gear. Tighten, clean, or replace components as needed. 6 Contact Traxxas for assistance: TRAXXAS (outside USA). us at support@traxxas.com

STORAGE When you are through running the Street Sport for the day, blow it off with compressed air or use a product such as Traxxas Nitro Wash to remove dirt and grime from the car. When using Nitro Wash, unplug and remove the batteries. Be careful not to spray it directly on the electronic components or into the motor. Allow the Street Sport to dry completely before reconnecting the batteries. Nitro Wash is flammable and should not be used where a spark may occur (such as in the motor or battery connectors). Always disconnect and remove the batteries from the Street Sport whenever the Street Sport is stored. If the Street Sport will be stored for a long time, then remove the batteries from the transmitter as well. DECALS Use a hobby knife or body scissors to cut out the decals with the backing. Test the position of the decals before applying them to the body. Once the decals have been applied, they cannot be removed without damaging them. You can spray the body with window cleaner before applying the decals. This will allow you to re-position them. Once positioned, squeegee the cleaner from under the decal. The decal will adhere when it dries. If you have air bubbles in the decals, puncture the center of each bubble with a sharp pin and push the air out. If you have creases along the outer edges of a decal (especially when applied to curved surfaces), use a hobby knife to cut along the top of the crease and overlap the edges.
