2 Page 2 of 7 Brush Temperature Pit Humidity High friction or an exceeded brush current density limit will cause overheating. The effects are damage to the brushes and ultimate failure. Contamination/OL. Low humidity will result in pulverization of the brushes and too high a humidity will result in deterioration of the slip ring. Moisture (lack). - Complete temperature measurement for 5 brushes each on A, B, C, D rings and record the highest temperature on each ring. - Brush temperature should not exceed 115 deg C with maximum field current. SAI: Brush temp too high! - Check the humidity in the brush gear pit with hand held hygrometer. - Specified hygrometical conditions are between 6 and 15 g of H2O per cubic meter of air. May cause thinner hydrodynamic oil wedge on bearing. Wear & Tear. - While generating unit is running (with lift pump off) check to see if the motor is turning backwards. - Check oil pressure while generating unit running. Alarm is set at 1000 psi. SAI: pump and motor are turning backwards. Walk around each of the three phases and complete visual inspection. SAI: oil or water leak, discoloured paint, fluid leaking form other source. - Checks and record gas accumulation in gas relay. SAI: Gas accumulation is high > 200 cc. - Check oil level. SAI: Oil level low -Check oil temperature gauge on the unit. Normal temperature is 25 deg C. Calibration/Mechanical Failure. - Check that the two red run lights (PL1/2) on the front of the control panel are lit when the transformer is in operation. The run light will not be lit if either the bulb is burned out or there is no oil flow (differential contoller 80Q1 or 80Q2). There should be a cooler trouble alarm if there is no oil flow in either of the coolers. SAI: One of two lights not lit on running unit. - Complete audible inspection of the oil pumps. SAI: excessive noise - Inspect couplings, piping, and valves for leaks. SAI: leaks - Inspect tank. SAI: - Leak or Rupture (visual); low conservator level alarm. Check RTD winding temperature (26WT) in the control room. Normal winding temperature is 40 deg C. SAI: Winding RTD temperature not consistent with other 2 phases. Check winding temperature at the transformer (49WA). Normal winding temperature is 40 deg C. SAI: Winding temperature not consistent with other 2 phases. 7 Page 7 of 7 AIR BLOWER Air Blower Operation Operator zonal inspection - check if blower operates when it is supposed to (50-70%) Rough load zone operation_ Yes No Incorrect operation of blower causes excessive unit vibration during rough load zone operation. Adjustment/malfunction. AIR BLOWER Butterfly Valve DRAFT TUBE Draft tube door & beam hatches SHAFT SEAL Cooling Water (S/C) Leaky valve causing increased S/C make-up air. Blower would turn backwards from air/water mixture leaking through leaking valve. Wear & Tear. Water leaking from door/hatches due to damaged seal. Likely due to: adjustment, dirt, seal failure, wear. Overheated carbon seal due to inadequate cooling water flow during sync-condense operation. dirt/debris. During Unit S/C operation, check that blower is not turning backward intermittently. Consider monitoring SAC runtime during unit S/C on OI. SAI: Increasing S/C compressor run time trend Operator Zonal inspection. Inspect door and beam hatches for leakage. SAI: Poor seal, leaking. Check cooling water flow set to 42 USGPM.
