Note Replacement capillaries may be purchased directly from Barnstead Thermolyne. See Replacement Parts list. Capillary Selection Your MEL-TEMP 3.0 includes a vial of Barnstead Thermolyne s precision melting point capillaries. They were specifically developed to fit the MEL-TEMP 3.0 and will provide the most uniform and repeatable results. Never force a capillary into the MEL-TEMP 3.0. Once a capillary is inserted into the large diameter portion of the capillary hole. Capillary Guard Installation Attach the capillary guard to the top of the unit using the 2 black thumb screws supplied with the guard. The large hole goes over the capillary opening in the top of the case. 6

Operation Switch the power ON. The upper display, marked ACTUAL, indicates the temperature of the capillary chamber. The lower display reads the previously selected start temperature. The START C LED (Light Emitting Diode) is lit to identify the meaning and units of data displayed in the lower display. The capillary chamber will heat or cool to the start temperature. Whenever the heater or fan is on, the corresponding LED on the control panel will light. Performing a Melting Point Determination Set Test Parameters 1. Press [SET]. 10 General Maintenance General Cleaning Instructions Wipe exterior surfaces with a lightly dampened cloth containing a mild soap solution. Calibration Your MEL-TEMP 3.0 has been factory calibrated at room temperature with a NIST traceable thermometer to ±0.2 C. If necessary you may easily confirm and/or change the instrument s calibration. The MEL-TEMP 3.0 may be calibrated three different ways: 10 Method 1 - Calibration with a Melting Point Standard: Determine the melting range of a melting point standard with your MEL-TEMP 3.0 in the following manner: 1. For the greatest accuracy, be sure to use the same heating rate that you usually use for melting range determinations. If there is any temperature difference between the melting range that you have just determined and the range printed on the melting point standard s container, write it down clearly. 2. Press and hold the UP and DOWN ARROW keys simultaneously for about five seconds. Release both keys when the lower display reads CAL1. Then press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to adjust CAL1. This will shift the temperature display readings. For example, if the temperature display read 0.5 C too low when the melting point standard was tested, then increase CAL1 by 0.5. This process calibrates the unit to the melting point standard.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE 3. Press the [STO/RCL] key, or wait sixty seconds to save the new calibration offset and exit the calibration mode. Method 2 - Using a Calibration Bath: 1. Remove any capillaries from the instrument. 2. Press the [SET] key. Then use the DOWN ARROW key to set Start (start temperature) to 0.0 C. 3. Press the [SET] key three times so that the unit displays the current block temperature in the upper display and 0.0 C in the lower display. The fan will turn on. 4. Wait until the upper display reads 50.0 C or cooler before continuing with this procedure. 5. Remove the black thumbscrews from the right and left side of the unit and lift off the cover. 6. Grasp the vertical portion of the temperature probe just above the metal block (that the capillaries fit into) and gently pull the probe up while simultaneously lifting the black grommet and white temperature probe cable up and out of the sheet metal piece that the fan is attached to. Be careful not to bend the probe or pull too hard on the probe s cable - it may be damaged if it is not handled gently. 11

GENERAL MAINTENANCE 7. Place the tip of the probe into the calibration bath. We recommend an immersion depth of 1.2 inches, which is the same amount of the probe that is heated in the block. If more reach is needed, gently pull the probe s cable out of the lower box. It can extend to approximately 15 inches. 8. Record any temperature difference between the calibration bath s thermometer and the MEL-TEMP 3.0 s upper display. 9. Press and hold the UP and DOWN keys simultaneously for about five seconds. Release both keys when the lower display reads CAL1. Then press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to adjust CAL1. This will shift the temperature display readings. For example, if the temperature display reads 0.5 C lower than the calibration bath s reference thermometer, then increase CAL1 by 0.5. This process calibrates the unit to the bath s reference thermometer. 10. Press the [STO/RCL] key, or wait sixty seconds to save the new calibration offset and exit the calibration mode. 11. Reassemble the instrument. 12

GENERAL MAINTENANCE Method 3 - Using a Reference Thermocouple and Electronic Thermometer 1. Allow the MEL-TEMP 3.0 to stabilize a few degrees below the calibration temperature you require. 2. Insert a fine thermocouple into a 3-5mm column of magnesia or alumina in a melting point capillary. 3. Insert the capillary and thermocouple into one of the capillary holes. 4. Begin ramping. For the greatest accuracy, be sure to use the same heating rate that you usually use for melting range determinations. 5. When the reference thermometer reads the desired calibration temperature, record the temperature difference between the electronic reference thermometer and the MEL-TEMP 3.0 s upper display. 6. Press and hold the UP and DOWN ARROW keys simultaneously for about five seconds. Release both keys when the lower display reads CAL1. Then press the UP or DOWN ARROW key to adjust CAL1. This will shift the temperature display readings. For example, if the temperature display reads 0.5 C lower than the thermocouple s reference thermometer, then increase CAL1 by 0.5. This process calibrates the unit to the reference thermometer. 13

GENERAL MAINTENANCE 7. Press the [STO/RCL] key, or wait sixty seconds to save the new calibration offset and exit the calibration mode. Reassemble the instrument. The calibration changes you made are stored in non-volatile memory and will be saved even when your MEL-TEMP 3.0 is turned off. Removing Broken Capillaries Broken capillaries are removed from the instrument in the following manner: 1. If the unit is hot, set the start temperature to 40.0 C or lower and allow the fan to run. 2. When the fan turns off, switch off the main power switch and unplug the power cord from the wall. 3. Remove the thumbscrews at the right and left side of the unit and lift off the housing cover. 4. Remove the lens with an ordinary pair of internal, snap-ring pliers. Pliers with a inch straight tip work nicely. 5. With the lens removed, hold the unit upside down and shake the capillary fragments into a suitable waste container. 6. Replace the lens (flat side in), snap ring, housing cover and thumbscrews. You may separate the aluminum branched tube (the cast metal part that holds the lens) from the heat block. The socket head screws can be removed with a 5/64 ball-driver. 14

GENERAL MAINTENANCE Replacement lamps may be purchased directly from Barnstead Thermolyne. (See Replacement Parts list). Lamp Replacement 1. If the unit is hot, set the start temperature to 40.0 C or lower and allow the fan to run. 2. When the fan turns off, switch off the main power switch and unplug the power cord from the wall. 2. Remove the thumbscrews at the right and left side of the unit and lift off the housing cover. 3. The light shield (which is marked caution unit hot is held in place with a multi-pronged retaining spring. To remove the light shield, pull straight up with moderate force. If necessary, rock the light shield back and forth slightly while pulling. 4. To remove the burned out bulb, gently push it towards the socket and rotate it approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise. 5. Replace the lamp with a new one and reinstall the light shield, housing cover and thumbscrews. 15

GENERAL MAINTENANCE Replacement fuses may be purchased directly from Barnstead Thermolyne. (See Replacement Parts list). Replacing Fuses 1. Unplug your MEL-TEMP 3.0 before replacing fuses. 2. MEL-TEMP 3.0 has two fuses located in the power entry module (the same part that the power cord plugs into). To replace these fuses, remove the fuse drawer by squeezing the tabs with your fingertips in the direction indicated by the arrows on the drawer. 3. Substitute new fuses for the blown fuses in the drawer, then push the drawer back into the power entry module. Both sides of the drawer should click into position. 16
