Overview This In Car Control Unit (ICCU) provides dynamic adjustment of the engine s Air/Fuel Mixture as well as Spark Advance Timing*. The display screen permits timing adjustments in 500 rpm increments. The unit also incorporates a separate timing adjustment for the use of nitrous oxide (N 2 O). When the unit is used in conjunction with N 2 O, the unit can change timing only when N 2 O is being injected into the engine. The Air Fuel screen allows adjustment of fueling at idle, cruising and Wide Open Throttle (WOT). The Standard ICCU can add up to +6 of timing and the race version allows up to 13 of additional timing. Beyond allowing fueling and spark timing adjustments, the ICCU also can display a variety of engine and ICCU functional parameters. Among these are: Engine RPM, Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Output, MAF Adjust Amount, Timing Adjust Amount and Oxygen Sensor Output. All values displayed are in real time from the engine s Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Board Layout and Connections This ICCU system will function perfectly with an OEM PCM or any aftermarket brand PCM. However, for all timing controls are only possible when a Digital Horsepower, Inc. (DHP) IAT timing flash is added to the PCM. The ICCU also incorporates a hidden menu system for future updates. The standard screen color is red, with other colors available with special orders. Tools Needed Small flat blade screw driver Wire cutters or a wire splice Electrical Tape Figure 1 On the left side of the main circuit board is the main wiring terminal block, see Figure 1. The ICCU is shipped pre-wired. The typical installation requires these wires to be temporarily disconnected from this terminal block, the wire cable fished through the firewall and then reconnecting the wires to the ICCU. The terminal locations are labeled to simplify reconnection. The legend for the terminal block is found in Table 1 below.

Button 13 OBD2 - OBD2 - J1850 interface for future upgrades 14 GNDF - AUX ground - can be used for button ground Table 1 ICCU Display Mounting The screen ships with no enclosure. The installer must a suitable location to mount the screen. The easiest place on a Pontiac Grand Prix is at the back of the spare change holder, located in front of the shift knob. For mounting the display, proceed as follows: 1. Measure the outside dimensions of the screen itself. 2. Cut a rectangular hole to the same dimensions 3. Drill 4 holes in the same pattern as the screws on the front of the ICCU 4. Remove the screws and position the screen as needed. 5. Reinstall screws (longer screws may be needed depending on installation) 6. If Day/Night Brightness switching is desired, purchase and install a single pole, single throw switch and wire an ignition switched 12v power source through this brightness switch and to ILL terminal (Position 8). When 12v is applied to this terminal, the ICCU display will be dimmed for night time. 7. If N 2 O trigger switching is desired, install a 12v power source wire, typically obtained from tapping into the N 2 O system solenoid power wire, and wire this to the N2O terminal (Position 9). When 12v is applied to this terminal, the ICCU will modify the spark advance per the N 2 O setting within the ICCU s programming. For details of adjusting this N 2 O setting, please refer to the Operation section in this manual. Note: Be careful not to lose the spacers that are between the 2 boards on the ICCU. If the screws are tightened too much without these spacers installed damage may occur to the board. A convenient place for the buttons is directly in front of the cup holder. These function buttons draw less than 5ma at 5V. During installation, extending the button wires or using different smaller wires is acceptable, wires as small as 30AWG can be used. Wiring to the button inputs should be as shown in Figure 2 if other buttons are used or the original ones are relocated. The ground used with the buttons can be the AUX ground in the ICCU terminal block or any good vehicle ground. UP SET DOWN Figure 2 Installation This unit is very easy to functionally install. The ICCU has been shipped pre-wired. Other than fishing the multi-conductor cable through the firewall, the ICCU can be functionally connected and working within 15 minutes. Attached to the button terminals is a "button board." This has the 3 buttons installed on it. This board can be separated and mounted in another area. The buttons may even be uninstalled off this board and installed in an area of your own choice. For custom installations, we recommended selecting buttons of your choice at a local electronics store and used in place of the buttons supplied. The only requirement is the buttons must be a momentary normally open pushbutton switch.
Installing the ICCU Harness 1. Make certain the car ignition is turned Off. 2. Remove the multi-conductor cable wires from the circuit board terminals. 3. Fish non-loomed end of the harness (multi-conductor cable) through the firewall from inside the engine compartment into the cab. An easy way of doing this is to first fish a smaller wire from the passenger compartment into the engine compartment. Then tape the ICCU harness wire to the fished wire and pull into the passenger compartment. 4. Reconnect wires to the same terminal block locations they were removed, referring to Table Unplug the stock MAF sensor connector. 6. Plug the Female ICCU MAF connector into the MAF sensor. 7. Plug the Male ICCU MAF connector into the car s wiring harness connector that originally was connected to the MAF sensor directly. 8. If you do NOT have a PCM with Intake Air Temperature (IAT) timing control skip to Step Unplug the IAT sensor connector. 10. Plug Male ICCU IAT connector into the car s wiring harness connector that originally was connected to the IAT sensor directly. 11. If your PCM is ever re-flashed to accept IAT input to adjust spark timing advance, then you will need to do is complete Steps 9 & 10 and you will be all set. 12. Splice the lone White wire at the end of the ICCU engine bay wiring harness into engine RPM 18X signal. This connector is located right along side of the front fuel rail closer to the battery side of the car. It is an 8 pin connector. The wire you want to tap into is position C on the connector. This is where the ICCU obtains the RPM signal. If you do not have an accurate RPM reading when done, check this connection. If your car does not have an 18X signal contact support@easyperformance.com for further instructions. 13. Secure all wiring harnesses with electrical tape or zip ties. 14. Installation is complete. Verifying Installation 1. When starting the car for the first time, you should see an accurate RPM reading on the status screen along with an MAF output frequency. If these parameters are not displaying correctly, then recheck your connections. Operation 2. Verification of correct installation can be accomplished by using a scan tool, if available. With no adjustments to the ICCU your car will run the same as before it was installed. To verify a correct installation, connect a scan tool to the vehicle and verify that the MAF, IAT temp, RPM, and Timing are roughly the same between the ICCU display and the scan tool output. Because of data read delays in the scan tool, the numbers may not coincide exactly but should be close to one another. 3. If the IAT Sensor connector was connected to the ICCU harness, as described in Steps 9 & 10, the IAT temp displayed should be between -2 C and 60 C. The timing values should be unaffected (i.e. requesting 0 timing addition). If you raise or lower your idle MAF % you should see a corresponding change in MAF input with a scan tool. 4. If you raise or lower your Timing under 4500 you should see a corresponding change in IAT temperature and timing (provided your PCM has been flashed with IAT timing control). The ICCU is a menu driven Air/Fuel/Timing management controller. The unit allows real time adjustment of Air/Fuel mixture based on MAF frequency and timing control based on RPM (provided your PCM has been flashed with IAT timing control). The screen is Menu driven with 4 menu screens and 3 buttons. An up down and select/set button. Default screen is the status screen which shows current A/F skewing, MAF output, Engine RPM, and timing being added to base timing. Pressing up or down from this screen will drop you to another screen. There are 2 brightness levels available which allow for daytime and nighttime brightness. To trigger the night setting there is a 12V input that will switch over to this setting when 12v power is applied to this terminal, refer to Step 6 in the ICCU Display Mounting section of this manual. Load/Save Screen After making any adjustments to the ICCU settings, you must save them so that the next time the car is started the adjustments will be retained. There are 2 saves and 2 loads, Save/Load1 are default and will be set every time power is cycled to the ICCU. Save/Load2 are for track settings. There is a rate adjustment which changes how fast the status screen updates in order to slow the data down to a readable speed. There is also a contrast adjustment that will adjust from 0 to 100 to allow for different mounting angles, etc.
Air/Fuel Settings The values entered into the Air/Fuel settings represent the percentage the MAF signal is multiplied by before the signal is sent to the PCM. For example, a setting of 104 sends a MAF signal that is 104% of the original signal, thus the signal is increased by 4%. This in effect instructs the PCM that more air is entering the engine and the PCM responds by increasing the fuel injected. As a result, Air/Fuel settings greater than 100 increase or richen the fuel mixture while values less than 100 decrease or lean out the fuel mixture. The ICCU has 3 Air/Fuel range settings. The unit will interpolate between the 3 A/F settings. In terms of MAF frequencies, the setting ranges are as follows: IDLE is <3000Hz CRUISING is Hz WOT is >7500HZ Timing Settings NOTE: The PCM within the vehicle must have the required IAT timing control flash in order for any spark timing adjustments to be functional. This includes the N 2 O spark control input. There are 7 timing adjustments based on RPM. Under 4500, over 4500, over 5000, over 5500, over 6000, over 6500, and N20. There is an N20 12V input (connecting this function is described in the ICCU Display Mounting, Step 7) which sets timing at whatever you choose when this input receives 12V. It s designed to be connected to the N2O relay, solenoid, or after the buttons (where ever a convenient 12V N2O signal can be taken). Keep in mind, the PCM must have the required IAT timing control flash in order for this to function. The IAT mod allows the user to add timing by changing the apparent IAT temperature to the PCM. TIP: If you already have a DHP PCM, you can contact DHP for this alteration. If you do not already have this capability, you will need to purchase a DHP PCM with the IAT timing option. The standard IAT timing mod provides ±6 degrees of advance. If greater adjustability is required, than special arrangements can be made with DHP. Status Screen There are no adjustments on the status screen. It displays current status of the control unit, Engine RPM, Calibrated MAF output, Timing addition, and MAF calibration %. Menu Control The menu driven system works in 3 "modes". Mode 1: Menu select This mode is enabled when the ICCU is first powered it up. This is also the ONLY mode available to the status screen. Pressing Up and Down buttons will scroll through the 4 different menu screens Mode 2: Option select Pressing the Set/Select button once while in Menu select puts you in this mode. Pressing Up or Down buttons will now cycle through adjustment parameters. An "S" will show up along side the variable that you will be editing. Mode 3: Value Edit Pressing the Set/Select button once while in Option select. The "S" next to the setting will turn to an "E" to denote EDIT mode. Pressing Up or Down buttons while in Value Edit mode will change the setting in increments of 1. When you are satisfied with the value you have selected, press the Set/Select button again to return to Option select mode. At this point, press the Up or Down button to scroll to the next setting you may want to edit. If you are finished editing all settings on this page, press the Set/Select button again to return to the Menu select mode. If you have selected a setting that you do not want to edit, just press the Set/Select button again to drop back down to the Option select mode and once again to back up to the Menu select mode if that is desired. CAUTION: Changes made to settings are performed in real time WHILE you are editing them. If the ICCU is using the particular variable you are editing it will change as you are incrementing the value.
While this menu system may seem difficult at first, it becomes very easy to use once you use it a few times. This menu system provides very fast system navigation. Basic Operation Steps with the Menu System Press Up/Down buttons to Scroll through screens until you find setting you want to adjust. Press Set/Select (puts you into Option Select mode). Press Up/Down buttons to scroll through settings until the desired setting displayed. Press Set/Select (puts you into Edit mode). Press Up/Down buttons to adjust that setting Press Set/Select (puts you back to Option Select mode) Press Set/select (puts you back into Menu Select mode) Press Up/Down buttons to return to status screen KEY: Remember to save your adjustments or they will not show up the next time the car is started!!! Illumination and Display Control Settings to adjust the screen Brightness and Contrast are found in the Save/Load menu. These settings are saved in Save1 and Save2 independently. Generally, a setting of 80 on Contrast will be the best for most situations. However, depending on mounting location, this may need to be adjusted to compensate for viewing angle. A setting of 100 will tend to saturate the display. The Brightness is controlled by the DAY and NITE settings. DAY is the default adjustment. The NITE setting can be selected by applying 12V to the Illumination input on the terminal strip. (See ICCU Display Mounting, Step 6 for details.) NOTE: Some displays are brighter at a setting of 99 than others. Avoid having the display extremely bright for long durations. Doing so will drastically reduce the life expectancy of the screen. Refresh Rate Refresh Rate is the rate at witch the screen updates information displayed. Refresh Rate does NOT affect the speed at which the ICCU is operating at. The Refresh Rate only affects how often the ICCU updates information on the screen. Internally, the ICCU will always operate at full microprocessor speed. A low setting will be hard to read because of the rapid changing display values will create a blur. A setting of 6-9 is generally preferred by most users. When the screen is really cold, it will slow down the reaction of the LCD matrix and the refresh rate should be lowered so that it can be read. N2O Input This option is NOT just for nitrous oxide use!! When 12V is applied to the N2O terminal, the ICCU will immediately adjust timing control to the amount selected in the N2O setting in the timing menu. For a Nitrous application, we recommend the ICCU N2O setting pull a few degrees of spark advance and have this function connect this wire to the nitrous system control solenoid as described in Step 7 of the ICCU Display Mounting section within this manual. When the ICCU is connected and programmed as such, then when N 2 O button is pushed and nitrous is sprayed, the PCM will also pull timing at the same time, based on what was programmed in the N2O setting. You can also use this for racing to add timing on demand or pull timing for launching. Hidden Menu There is also a hidden menu to adjust marquee settings. To enter this menu, perform the following: 1. Shut off car 2. Move the Ignition Switch to ON while holding the Set/Select button on the ICCU 3. Release the Set/Select button when prompted 4. You should now be in the hidden menu The loop time of each startup marquee (smaller is faster) can be adjusted The second marquee from the main menu cycle can be added or removed (DISP Y/N) The O2 function can turned On or Off (O2 Y/N) The RPM pulse signal in from 3X 18X or 24X counts per revolution can be set. Note: This should be 18X for a V6 and 24X for a V8 If you have any question, concerns or comments on the Mini-AFC 2.0 Kit and/or the installation instructions, please visit Easy Performance Products website at and click on the Mini-AFC 2.0 Kit link found under Products in the menu.
