3 Platform Welder Features Welder The platform welder package allows the platform operator to perform continuous duty stick and TIG welding from the platform. The package includes a Lincoln V275-S welder mounted in the platform. Power is supplied to the welder by a hydraulically driven generator mounted on the turntable. The welder package includes the following features. Lincoln V275-S welder 208 VAC 3-phase generator Circuit protection (overcurrent and ground fault) Fire extinguisher mounted at the platform The welder output is based on a ten minute cycle: 275 amps 35% duty cycle 250 amps 60% duty cycle 200 amps 100% duty cycle Generator The hydraulic motor driven generator supplies AC power to the platform welder. The generator specifications are as follows. 21 cc hydraulic motor Output of 208 VAC 30 A, 208 VAC three-phase, 60 hertz power outlet 15 A 208 VAC single-phase power outlet 15 A 120 VAC single-phase power outlet Options Hydraulic oil cooler Field Installation If the platform welder is a field installed option, refer to the assembly drawings on pages 9 through 12. If the welder is being installed on an aluminum platform, install the placard ( ) below the upper control box on the platform rail as shown on page 11. Important Safety Information Safety Practices The following safety practices may be used as a guide while operating the welder on the job. The operator bears ultimate responsibility for following all manufacturer s instructions and warnings, regulations and safety rules of their employer and/or any state or federal law. Platform Capacity The platform rated work load is the total weight of the personnel and equipment that may be lifted in the platform. The work load is stated on the platform rating placard mounted on the toeboard at the rear of the platform. The welder and its associated accessories are considered as equipment and reduces the platform capacity by 110 lb (50 kg). Welding Ground Connection Do not use the aerial platform as a ground connection when welding. The welding ground clamp must be attached to the same structure that is being welded. Electrical current flow can be very intense, causing serious internal damage to some aerial platform components. Protective Gear Make certain to wear proper protective gear to help prevent weld burns. Wear leather welding gloves, leather apron, welding chaps, leather shoes, and eye protection. Wear a welding helmet with the proper lens for the type of welding being performed. Ventilation Breathing welding fumes can be a hazard to your health. Fumes should be ventilated away from your breathing zone. Flammable Materials Welding can cause fires or explosions. Do not wear synthetic clothing or carry butane lighters, matches, etc. in your pocket while welding. Have a fire extinguisher in the area to extinguish any fires. Electrical Shock Electrical shock from the electrode or wiring can cause death or serious injury. Do not weld in damp or wet conditions. Use dry nonflammable insulating material such as rubber mats or plywood to cover the area that is in contact with the work. Inspect the power connections, cords, and welding cables before each use to make sure they are in proper working condition and are not damaged. While welding, protect the cables from sharp edges, hot metal, and the hot electrode or electrode holder. Be mindful of the location of the cables to avoid becoming wrapped in them. Platform Welder

4 Important Safety Information Safety Alerts A safety alert symbol is used in this manual to indicate danger, warning, and caution instructions. Follow these instructions to reduce the likelihood of personal injury and property damage. The terms danger, warning, and caution indicate varying degrees of personal injury or property damage that can result if the instruction is not followed. ADanger Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. This signal word is to be used in the most extreme situations. AWarning Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. ACaution Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. Operator Responsibilities The welder package has built-in safety features and has been factory tested for compliance with Snorkel specifications and industry standards. However, the welder can be potentially dangerous in the hands of untrained or careless operators. Training is essential and must be performed by a qualified person. Become proficient in knowledge and actual operation before using the welder on the job. You must be trained and authorized to perform any functions of the aerial platform. Operation of the welder must be within the scope of the manufacturer s specifications. AWarning The potential for an accident increases when proper safety procedures are not followed while welding. Read, understand, and follow the safety information in the welder manufacturer s Operator s Manual to help prevent injury from sparks, molten metal, and sharp edges. The operator bears ultimate responsibility for following all manufacturer s instructions and warnings, regulations and safety rules of their employer and/or any state or federal law. Maintenance Every person who maintains, inspects, tests, or repairs the welder package must be qualified to do so. Daily inspection will help keep the welder and generator in optimum working condition. Other maintenance functions must be performed by qualified maintenance personnel. Do not modify this welder package and its associated components without prior written consent of the Snorkel Engineering Department. Modification may void the warranty, adversely affect stability, or affect the operational characteristics of the aerial platform. AWarning The potential for an accident increases when the aerial platform and associated equipment is operated by personnel who are not trained and authorized. Death or serious injury can result from such accidents. Read and understand the information in this manual, the welder manual, and on the placards and decals on the machine before operating the aerial platform and welder on the job. 4 Platform Welder

5 Platform Welder Operation The platform rated work load is the total weight of the personnel and equipment that may be lifted in the platform. The work load is stated on the platform rating placard mounted on the toeboard at the rear of the platform. ADanger The aerial platform can tip over if it becomes unstable. Death or serious injury can result from a tipover accident. Do not exceed the capacity values indicated on the platform rating placard. Capacity values indicate the rated lifting capacity and do not indicate aerial platform stability. The operator bears ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the aerial platform is properly set up for the particular conditions encountered. The welder and its associated accessories are considered as equipment and reduces the platform capacity by 110 lb (50 kg). Machine Setup Use the following procedure to operate the platform welder. 1. At the lower controls, place the emergency stop switch in the on position and turn the start switch on. Place the controls switch in the platform position. 2. On dual fuel machines, set the fuel switch to either LPG or gasoline. 3. Open the shut-off valve on the tank if using LPG. 4. Enter the platform and securely close the gate. 5. Attach the fall restraint lanyard to one of the anchor points. 6. Pull the emergency stop button out. 7. Turn the anti-restart master switch to start, then release it to on. The engine will not start if the switch is left in the on position for 30 seconds or longer before turning it to start. The switch must be turned back to off before the engine will start. ACaution Cold hydraulic oil does not flow well and may produce improper generator output voltage. Improper outlet voltage can damage some electrical power tools and equipment. Warm the hydraulic oil before operating the generator. Do not operate the generator unless the temperature of the hydraulic oil is at least 100 F (38 C). Refer to the aerial platform Operator s Manual for a hydraulic oil warmup procedure. Continuous operation of the generator and/or the aerial platform will cause the hydraulic oil temperature to increase. Turn the generator off when AC power is not required to help keep the oil temperature from rising. The generator is nominally rated for a 60% duty cycle. That means the generator can be operated continuously for 18 minutes out of every 30 minutes. Periodically monitor the hydraulic oil thermometer to make sure the temperature does not exceed the maximum operating temperature of 200 F (93 C). Remember that the abient air temperature can effect the temperature of the hydraulic oil in the reservoir. Use the following procedure to supply power to the electrical power outlet for operation of the welder. 1. Plug the generator cord into the outlet on the wiring box. 2. Start the engine and place the machine/generator selector switch (refer to Figure 1) in the generator position. Machine/Generator Switch 8. Let the engine warm to operating temperature. AC Generator The generator is used to supply power to the welder, only when the engine is running and the machine is stationary. Machine functions will not operate when the machine/ generator selector switch is in the generator position. The generator will continue to operate as long as the engine is running and the switch is in the generator position. Platform Welder

6 Platform Welder Operation Electrical Power The electrical power outlet at the platform has two, 3- prong electrical connectors (refer to Figure 2). The top connector is a 208 VAC outlet and the bottom is a 120 volt outlet. Welder The welder may be positioned near the floor of the platform as shown in Figure 4. The bracket must be mounted before placing the welder on it. 208 VAC 120 VAC Figure 2 Single-Phase Electrical Power Outlet The output of each outlet is limited by an Equipment Leakage Current Interrupter (ELCI) for ground fault circuit protection and a circuit breaker. Refer to Figure 3. Three-Phase 208 V 30 Amp Circuit Breaker Figure 4 Platform Welder The welder mounting bracket is made so that it can not be repositioned or removed without first removing the welder from it. The latch may be locked in the closed position to help prevent the welder and bracket from being removed. Make certain that the generator cord is connected to the outlet on the upper control panel (refer to Figure 5). ELCI Single-Phase 120/208 V 15 Amp Circuit Breaker Figure 3 Right Side Of Turntable If tripped, the ELCI will reset automatically by turning the generator off and then back on. ACaution If a circuit breaker trips, determine the cause and correct the problem. Damage to the electrical system may result if the cause of the problem is not corrected. The circuit breakers must be manually reset. The toggle switch will normally be up. If a circuit breaker trips, the switch will be down and will need to be placed back in the up position to reset it. Figure 5 Three-Phase Electrical Power Outlet With the welder cord plugged into the 208 VAC 3-phase outlet as shown in Figure 2, place the machine/generator switch in the generator position while the engine is running to supply electrical power to the welder. 6 Platform Welder

7 Platform Welder Operation AWarning The potential for an accident increases when proper safety procedures are not followed while welding. Death or serious injury can result from such accidents. Read, understand, and follow the safety information in the welder manufacturer s Operator s Manual to help prevent injury from sparks, molten metal, and sharp edges. The welder bracket may also be positioned on the top rail of the platform on either side of the upper control panel. Take the proper precautions to make sure the welding cables and the area below the elevated platform are protected from falling sparks and molten metal. Refer to the Lincoln V275-S Operator s Manual for instructions for proper operation of the welder. The fire extinguisher, cable, and welding rod holder (refer to Figure 6) may be positioned on the top rail of the platform.
