5 PIXPowerWare (Dualduty Taper s & ush) PowerWare PIX has always been the innovators and pioneers in the mechanical power transmission and the related products. Innovations, upgradation and providing value added products has always been the passion with PIX. To fulfill its coitment of providing a complete Power Transmission Solution to its users, the company has also added PIXPowerWare s and PIXPowerWare Couplings to its range of V elts. The introduction of PowerWare products in the range would facilitate the users to achieve optimum power transmission from drives consisting of PIXPowerWare with the matched PIX Velt. It will also help users in getting a complete power transmission solution comprising of s, Couplings and elts from the same manufacturer thus eliminating the chances of mismatch. PIXPowerWare s and Couplings are made as per international standards and follow a strict manufacturing procedure in accordance with the ISO standards. This technical catalogue features a technical knowhow about s, ush and Couplings. About s A is also called a sheave or drum and may have a groove between the two flanges around its circumference. The drive element of a system can be a rope, cable, elt, or chain; that runs over the inside the groove. A elt and system is characterised by two or more s in coon to a elt. This allows for mechanical power, torque, and speed to be transmitted across the axles. If the s are of differing diameters, a mechanical advantage is realised. Set screw Integral key A elt drive is analogous to that of a chain drive, however a elt sheave may be smooth (devoid of discrete interlocking members as would be found on a chain sprocket, spur gear, or timing elt) so that the mechanical advantage is approximately given by the ratio of the pitch diameter of the sheaves only, not fixed exactly by the ratio of teeth as with gears and sprockets. 35 PolyV s PolyV or Ribbed drive is a special construction elt drive, which can be used with very small pulley diameters. PolyV drives help to dampen the noise and vibrations. Due to reduced pulley size, various applications which require compact drives at high speed are driven by PolyV drives. Some of the coon applications include engine drive, machine tools, wood working machines, health & fitness utility machines, compressors, fans etc. PolyV drives help to achieve optimum drive performance and an augmented drive life. 67 balancing PowerWare Static alancing Concept: When the is statically balanced, then the center of mass lies on the axis of rotation. Crosscheck: Rotate the to any angular position and leave it. If it is statically balanced, then the will retain its position. Procedure: a) You are provided with different masses (in the from of bars) and thus the shaft + masses constitutes your system. b) As of now you assume that the center of mass of the bars is at equidistant from the axis of rotation. m r r m m r m r shaft r r m r m m m r c) Orient the masses on the shaft in such a way that center of mass =? m r = d) or that randomly orient masses m and m (i.e.) and then analytically solve for getting orientation of and (i.e. ). e) anually orient m and m at calculated angles and then see if there is an unbalance, there will be most probably. f) You then need to finely adjust the orientations of any two masses to make the system statically stable. Dynamic balancing: Dynamic balancing is highly recoended in the applications running at high speeds. Concept: The is dynamically balanced, if net moment produced is zero. Crosscheck: When the is dynamically balanced, the system will not undergo vibration, if the is rotated. Procedure: a) ount the elt on the of the shaft b) Current state is that your system is statically balanced (from previous part) c) Considering the bearing near the elt as your origin, you need to come up with the axial position of masses on the shaft a such that: Net moment = a x mr = d) The procedure from this step onwards is analogous to that of Part A from steps e & f, where the lengths of side of polygon is amr instead of mr. To check the unbalance, rotate the at various rpms. OR Dynamic balancing can be calculated using below formula: ½ RP=, / (D), where D is diameter in es and is the face width in es. OR ½ RP=. x, / (D), where D is diameter in and is the face width in. Resultant RP is the maximum recoended operating RP for a sheave or a with a single plane balance (static balancing). Note: if a sheave or is to be operated at higher speed, two plane balancing is recoended.

68 alignment inspection PowerWare isalignment can either be quantified mathematically, or be compared to some general rules of thumb for quicker and easier results. While using a straight edge to project the plane of the outside face of the sheave or sprocket # with respect to sheave or sprocket #, angular misalignment can be quantified as the difference in clearance between the straight edge and the outside surface of the sheave or sprocket # across the diameter. D isalignment = Tan D The angle of parallel misalignment can be quantified as the difference in clearance between the straight edge and the outer surfaces of the two sheaves or sprockets across the separation distance. D C isalignment = Tan D C The total allowable misalignment recoended for Velts, in general, is /degree. While individual Velts are known to be capable of handling greater amounts of misalignment before becoming unstable, maintaining the misalignment to within /degree will maximize elt life. The total amount of misalignment recoended for synchronous, banded elts and polyv elts is /degree. These drives are less tolerant of misalignment than conventional Velt drives, and must be aligned more accurately. or Velt drives: /degree angle = approximately / per foot of distance traveled. or synchronous, degree angle, and Vribbed drives: /degree angle = approximately / per foot of distance traveled.

84 PowerWare PIXStar / Jaw Couplings PIX Star coupling is a threepieced design which consists of two hubs and an elastomeric element called the spider. Star coupling hubs are machined with high precision, they fit with the spider, assuring zerobacklash operation. The curved star profile is aimed to concentrate the forces to the centre of the spider s limbs, thus providing high effectiveness to the elastomer material. lexible members are provided with proper torsional stiffness to dampen the impulse load, while countering misalignment. PIXSpacer Star Couplings can be used to connect two shafts having larger distances between them. A star coupling is a general purpose power transmission coupling. It is designed to transmit torque (by connecting two shafts) while damping system vibrations and accoodating misalignment, which protects other components from damage. Star couplings consist of three parts: two metallic hubs and an elastomer insert called as an element, but coonly referred to as a "spider". The three parts pressfit together with a star from each hub fitted alternately with the lobes of the spider. The torque here is transmitted through the elastomer lobes in compression. The elastomer of the spider is made of nitrile rubber, which offers good flexibility. Considerations for elastomer selection include ability to dampen the vibrations, handle misalignment, operational temperature range, speed of the equipment, and chemical conditions. Star couplings are considered "failsafe" because, should the elastomer fail or wear away, the Star coupling hub teeth will mate, much like teeth on two gears, and continue to transmit torque. This may or may not be desirable to the user depending on the application. Star couplings elastomers are wearing elements that do need to be inspected and replaced. Star coupling elastomers often have signature wear patterns, and failures can often be root caused based on the condition of the elastomer and hubs. Coon failure causes include misalignment, overtorque, chemical exposure, temperature exposure, torsional vibrations, and hub failure. 94 PowerWare PIXHRC Couplings Installation HRC Coupling is a semielastomeric coupling and is designed for general purpose applications. It permits quick and easy assembly by means of a taper bush. All outside diameters are fully machined, which allows for a high degree of accuracy via simple alignment methods, such as using a straight edge or the rule method. HRC Couplings are also a failsafe design due to their interacting jaw design & often referred to as a capacity balanced coupling because, if the shaft fits, it will do the job. efore installation, check all components for suitability, particularly where, components previously in service, are being reused. Check taper bushes and the HRC coupling hubs are free of contaminants, lubricants, nicks, burns, and fatigue damage. Any type of contaminant or damage can affect the seating of the taper bush, both on the shaft and in the female bore of the coupling hub (Applicable for Taper ush Coupling Installation). When placing the taper bush into the HRC coupling hub, half holes should be matched to make complete holes. The taper bush should be oriented in order that each complete hole has thread on one side only (Applicable for Taper ush Coupling Installation). efore inserting the screws, ensure all threads are lubricated with oil. The screws should be started, but not tightened, in the threads in the HRC coupling hub (Applicable for Taper ush Coupling Installation). Slide one of the HRC coupling hubs and taper bush assemblies into position. Place the HRC coupling (rubber) element into the other hub and taper bush assembly.

95 PIXHRC Couplings To ensure correct mating of the two hubs, ensure that couplingassembled, total length is correct. PowerWare ocate the coupling halves and element assembly approximately in the desired position. HRC couplings are required to be mounted with an allowance for a small amount of float. This internal float allows for any linear expansion and maintains the coupling s misalignment capability. To ensure the tapers are seated correctly, it is recoended to tap the front face of the taper bush with a nylon haer or suitable soft drift to ensure no damage occurs to the taper bush. A torque wrench must then be used to achieve the correct tension on the screws as defined in the Table. This procedure should be carried out a number of times to ensure the tapers are correctly seated. After setting the screws to the correct torque, they may require tightening again after tapping with the nylon haer (Applicable for Taper ush Coupling Installation). Table ush size Screw tightening torque (Nm) Screw Details arge end Dia. Approx. mass (Kg) Qty Size (SW) ax Socket size HRC couplings have a maximum misalignment capability of degree. Correct attention to accurate alignment of the coupling halves is, therefore, essential. any methods of aligning shaft couplings are available, all with varying degrees of resultant accuracy and skills required. aser alignment is the most effective and efficient in achieving accurate alignment (Applicable for Taper ush Coupling Installation). After a period of normal running, it is often prudent to recheck the torque settings on the taper lock bushing screws and retighten as necessary (Applicable for Taper ush Coupling Installation). It is recoended that unfilled holes in the taper bush are filled with grease or silicon sealant to prevent the entrance of contaminants and facilitate future removal requirements (Applicable for Taper ock ush Coupling Installation). After the mounting, affix a safety cover. Touching this product during operation, may cause injury (Applicable for Taper ush Coupling Installation).

96 PowerWare PIXPin ush Couplings Pin ush Coupling (PC) is engineered for the power transmission applications, where limited misalignment between the driven and the driver shafts occur. It is a package of sophisticated construction and high torque transmitting capacity at higher speeds and is capable of absorbing shock loads. It is unidirectional coupling, which can transfer torque in both clockwise and anticlockwise direction. Torque transmission in PC takes place through high tensile steel bolts. PC is made for least downtime; it doesn t need to be adjusted after fitting nor lubrication is required. It's robust construction makes the flexible bushes unaffected by oil & grease, dust proof and unaffected from atmospheric conditions.. Key eatures: Simple construction: Simple and compact construction, can be easily dissembled and assembled. Suitable stiffness for smooth operation: ushes are specially provided with proper stiffness, which prevents the coupling from shocks and torsional vibration and counters, misalignment. asy servicing: Simple construction makes inspection and replacement of pin and bush very easy. It can be dismantled without decoupling the shafts. Silent and vibration free operation: lexible member absorbs noise and vibration, thereby making the operation smoother. Absolutely no lubrication required: ush couplings work without being lubricated, thus reduce the downtime and operational costs.
