2 Gate Valve or Sluice Valve: The great naming debate The correct terminology referencing control valves for fluid media has, for many years, been hotly debated and settling on the appropriate term has often been difficult for industry. Historically, below ground valves (BGV) with their heavier, more robust construction designed to cope with the endurance required of a buried service, have been referred to as Sluice Valves. These valves were traditionally cement lined with a black bituminous coating and supplied without hand-wheels. Valves to be installed above ground (AGV), were constructed with a lighter body and were normally nominated as Gate Valves. AGVs were commonly supplied with a handwheel, although not in every case. With the advent of Red Oxide coatings and the market entry of Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) and similar advanced polymeric coating systems the issue of corrosion resistance was largely overcome. This resulted in heavy grey cast iron bodies becoming essentially redundant and consequently, a uniform design strategy for both BGV and AGV has evolved. This has not only significantly reduced the manufacturing costs but rendered the distinction between AGV and BGV largely academic. Consequently in today s market they are all simply referred to as Gate Valves. Dobbie has been in the business of manufacturing and supplying Resilient Seated Gate Valves compliant with AS/NZS since are non-rising stem (NRS) design, where the gate traverses a 431 stainless steel spindle. Valves may be configured as either Clockwise (CC) or Anti-Clockwise (ACC) closing in accordance with client specification. They are suitable for use in either above ground or a below ground applications and can be installed either in a horizontal or vertical aspect. have been design engineered right here in Australia for high abrasion resilience, robust impact resistance and durability. They are proven performers with a solid reputation. are supplied pressure rated to PN16 as standard, however we are able supply valves up to PN25 upon request. Valves are offered with flange connections compliant to AS/NZS 4087 (Metallic Flanges for Waterworks Purposes) or with socket end connections compliant to AS/NZS 2280 (Ductile Iron Pipes and Fittings). The body and cover castings are cast using high quality ductile iron and are coated with a thermally bonded polymeric coating to AS/NZS This attractive and high quality form of coating provides excellent protection against corrosion and imparts significant resistance to abrasion. are supplied with a ductile iron gate, encapsulated in approved rubber. This provides both a drop tight seating and brings significant wear resistance into the design. gaskets (also certified to ) are fitted between the body and cover, with O-Rings providing a seal between the gland and operating mechanism. These seals perform double duty in also preventing debris and foreign objects from entering the gland housing. As per AS/NZS requirements, the spindle O-Rings are capable of being replaced in-situ under normal operating pressure. This prevents spindle leakage while in-the-field maintenance is performed. Options for control mechanisms fitted at time of supply include: Key Cap Handwheel Gearbox ready Gearbox Gearbox and Actuator Direction of Actuation Valve - RSGV Dobbie Gate Valves feature a multi turn design (NRS) and are offered in either Clockwise Closing or Anti-Clockwise Closing configurations. Direction of operation is indicated via directional arrows on the key cap or handwheel and colour coded caps or inserts. 3 Gate Valves are isolation type valves utilising a sliding wedge plate (gate) to interact within a flow path and are primarily employed to prevent or facilitate the flow of fluid media. Dobbie s planar sealing system is ideal for straight-line flow applications where minimal flow restriction is required. When fully open, a Dobbie Gate Valve has little or no obstruction in the flow path, resulting in very low friction loss. ǁǁǁ ĚŽďďŝĞ ĐŽŵ ĂƵ come in a range of configurations: NRS (Non Rising Stem) ACC / CC Flange Connections: AS/NZS 4087 Flange Options: (ANSI / ASME, BSEN 1092, etc.) or as per custom Pressure Ratings: PN16 / PN25 Standard Key Cap / Handwheel Gearbox Ready / Gearbox / Actuator Valve - RSGV Gate Valves should only be operated in either a fully open or fully closed position. It is inadvisable to employ singular gate valves for modulating the flow of the media or for throttling purposes. These are tasks more suited to the use of Globe or Butterfly Valves, or the utilisation of Orifice Plates. The high and irregular velocities associated with throttling a strong media flow create turbulence and cavitation which can lead to numerous problems including: vibration in the line (causing water hammer / hydraulic shock); chattering / fretting wear; body, gate, or sealing ring damage to the valves. Highly turbulent flow systems may inflict collateral damage upon downstream systems and pipe services. Damage to Gate Valves is not easily rectified on site, and repair in the workshop is the only viable way to ensure that the valve will operate correctly again once returned to operational service. This is an expensive exercise, best avoided whenever possible through correct selection, placement, installation & use of valves.

4 : Benefits AS/NZS 4020 approval make them well suited to applications involving the transfer and control of potable (drinking) water. Offer an increased ability to effectively seal against foreign objects (i.e. stones, debris, detritus, etc.), as the synthetic elastomer encapsulation of the wedge provides a pliant surface which absorbs impacts. As per AS , valves are thoroughly tested to a minimum 1.5 times their rated operational pressure. Fully encapsulated wedges are corrosion free. Resilient Seated Gate Valves present a clear, smooth and unobstructed waterway, one that does not exhibit a potentially debris-trapping sump beneath the seat closure position. This reduces the amount of foreign matter that may become trapped in the closing mechanism making Resilient Seated Gate Valves very suitable for waste water applications. The full bore waterway also limits flow inhibition and friction loss. Suitable for above or below ground applications. Low torque values mean easy operation and extended service life.
