Page 4 Step 1 Double-check site specifics Double-check all site specifics and preparatory work by others prior to installation. 1 Prior to delivery, ensure that you have clear access to the installation site. 2 For job site verification, use the following information sources: Written and verbal direction from the customer and any contractors involved in the installation. 3 Ensure that the width of the stairway will accommodate the stairlift in the unfolded position. 4 Ensure that the stair steps will support the maximum load of the stairlift (350 lb/159 kg). 5 Ensure that there is a standard household 110 V AC power outlet located at the top or bottom of the stairs to plug in the charger. 6 Ensure that all electrical equipment and wiring comply with the applicable codes. 7 Ensure that there are no fire and safety issues. Contact Savaria s Technical Support at 1 (800) if necessary. 8 Ensure that there is adequate lighting along the stairway and at the landings. Step 2 Unpack and check shipment Unpack and check the contents of the shipment. 1 Prior to installation, unpack the shipment and check the contents. The shipment comes in four boxes. The carriage is in one box, the seat assembly and carriage post/footrest assembly are in a second box, and the upper and lower rail assemblies are in the third and fourth boxes. 2 Check the condition of the shipment for any damage; installing damaged parts can lead to safety violations and void the limited warranty. Contact Savaria s Technical Support if any parts are damaged. NOTE If possible, take a photograph of any damaged part(s).

Page 5 Step 3 Determine handing Determine whether you will be installing a left-hand or right-hand unit. 1 The handing of the unit is determined by standing at the bottom of the stairway looking upward. 2 From this viewpoint, a left-hand unit would be installed on the left side of the stairs (shown below), and a righthand unit would be installed on the right side of the stairs. Figure 1 Left-hand unit installed on left side as viewed from bottom of stairway NOTE When you are at the bottom landing looking up the stairway, the steel gear rack will always be on the LEFT side of the aluminum rail regardless of the handing of the unit.

6 Step 4 Cut rail to length Cut the rail to length as required. 1 Measure the travel of the stairs from the nose at the top landing to the floor at the bottom landing (nose to floor in Figure 2 below). Figure 2 Top rail extension 3 Refer to the table below for the length of rail extension required at the top landing. For example, with a stair angle of 35, the top rail extension needs to be 8. Top rail extension requirements Angle of stairs Top rail extension length / / / /2 4 Add the nose to floor measurement to the top rail extension length to get the total cut rail length. See Figure 2 at the left. NOTE 2 Use the chart below to determine the angle of the stairs from the riser and tread measurements. For example, with a riser of 8 and a tread of 10, the angle of the stairs is 39. Chart to determine angle of stairs (degrees) Riser Nose to floor Riser Tread Tread Angle of stairs Cut rail length = nose to floor + top rail extension Always cut the rail from the top of the track. The bottom of the lower rail assembly is identified by a 45 cut. Always cut the aluminum separate from the steel rack. 5 Remove the upper limit switch cam from the lower rail assembly. To do this, slightly loosen the two cam screws and slide the cam out the end of the rail. Set it aside for reinstallation. 6 Before cutting the rail, make sure you remove any items that are shipped inside the rail cavity: plastic casing for charging contact strips and an extra piece of rack. 7 Follow either step 8 or 9 to cut the rail. NOTE The recommended blade (for a 12 mitre saw) is an aluminum or non-ferrous metal blade with a reverse rake on the teeth. 8 If using the lower rail assembly only: a. Mark the aluminum rail at the cut length determined by the nose to floor plus top rail extension, measured from the heel at the bottom of the rail (the shorter side of the rail). b. Remove the steel rack from the section of aluminum rail to be cut. c. Cut the aluminum rail to length. d. Insert the steel rack back into the rail. Insert the extra piece of steel rack, if required. Ensure the rack sections are pushed tightly together and mark the steel rack 3/4 from the top of the cut rail (to allow for installation of the top rail end cap). e. Remove the steel rack section and cut it as marked.

Page 7 f. Set this piece of steel rack aside to be installed after the carriage is installed on the rail. NOTE If you are joining two rail sections together (as described in the procedure below) and the second rail section will be too short to accommodate two legs, you need to cut the bottom rail section as well. We suggest cutting the bottom rail section at the 45-degree angle end to ensure a smooth connection at the rail joint. 9 If the total travel is such that you need to join two or more rail sections together: a. Place the rail sections on the floor end to end. b. Mark the aluminum rail at the cut length determined by the nose to floor plus top rail extension, measured from the heel at the bottom of the rail (the shorter side of the rail). c. With the rail sections still end to end, slide the steel rack from the upper rail down to fill in the space in the lower rail. d. Remove the steel rack from the section of aluminum rail to be cut. e. Cut the aluminum rail to length. f. Insert the steel rack back into the rail. Insert the extra piece of steel rack, if required. Ensure both the rail and rack sections are pushed tightly together (so the rack fills up the entire length of rail) and mark the steel rack 3/4 from the top of the cut rail (to allow for installation of the top rail end cap). g. Remove the top steel rack section and cut it as marked. h. Set this piece of steel rack aside to be installed after the carriage is installed on the rail. Step 5 Connect rail sections together (if required) Connect the rail sections together (if required) using the splice bars provided. Depending on the total travel of the unit, you may have to connect additional rail sections to the lower rail section. Connect the rail sections together using the rail splice bars (one at the front and one at the back of the rail). 1 Place the rail sections on the floor end to end. 2 Insert the splice bar into the lower T-slot on the front of one rail section. Tighten the two screws to secure it in place. See Figure 3 below. 3 Insert the splice bar into the lower T-slot on the back of the same rail section. Tighten the two screws to secure it in place.see Figure 3 below. 4 Slide the second rail section into place over the splice bars. 5 Push the two sections firmly together ensuring there are no gaps in the rail. See Figure 4 below. 6 Tighten the two screws per splice bar to secure the two sections together. 7 Repeat steps 2 to 6 above for additional rail sections. Figure 3 NOTE Do not remove any of the rack screws once the rack is completely installed. If you do, you will have to remove the complete rack in order to reinstall the rack screw. Splice bars Figure 4

Page 8 Step 6 Install rail assembly Install the rail mounting brackets and rail assembly. N NOTE: Refer also to the next procedure (STEP 7) if you have an optional flip-up rail section. 1 When installing the rail assembly and mounting brackets, observe the following items: a. Ensure that the distance from the wall to the outside (front) of the rail is 10 to 11 (254 to mm). b. Ensure that there is a minimum gap of 1 (25.4 mm) between the wall and the foot of the mounting brackets at the back of the rail. c. Ensure that there are six sets of mounting brackets for every 16 ft (4.9 m) of rail. d. Never install the mounting bracket sets more than 40 (1016 mm) apart. e. Always install mounting brackets on both sides of a rail splice (on the step above and below the splice). 2 IMPORTANT: Before mounting the rail, be sure to drill holes on both sides of the rail (one for the positive bus line stopper and one for connection of the negative contact strip directly to the rail). See Figures 17 and 18 in Step 11 later in the manual. a. Measure 3/8 (9.5 mm) from the cut end of the rail and mark the rail at this point. b. Drill a diameter hole at this mark. c. Screw the M3 self-tapping screw into the hole and then remove it. This will allow for easier installation later (Step 11). 3 IMPORTANT: Before mounting the rail, be sure to install the rubber rail cap on the bottom end of the rail. Also make sure the bottom limit cam is installed. 4 Carefully position the rail assembly on the nose of the steps with the bottom of the rail assembly touching the floor, or slightly off the floor. 5 To prepare for installation of the rail mounting brackets, slide the required number of T-bolts into the lower slots at the front and back of the rail. See Figure 5. Note that you will be installing mounting brackets on both sides of the rail (front and back). Figure 5 6 Install the mounting brackets (as described below) on the bottom step first, followed by the top step, and then continue with the other brackets in between making sure the brackets are no more than 40 apart. If you run into a situation where the staircase is uneven with no clearance for the rail using the standard mounting brackets, you can use the mounting extension brackets ( and ) from the extension kit instead. To install the mounting brackets: a. Attach the mounting brackets to the rail (Figures 6 and 7) using the T-bolts in the slots and acorn nuts. b. Make sure the bottom mounting brackets are attached to the rail at the correct position (with the rail just touching the floor) before moving up to install the other brackets. It is difficult to slide the rail once the other mounting brackets are attached. c. Drill holes in the steps as required to anchor the mounting brackets. d. Anchor the front and back mounting brackets along the stairway using the hardware provided (two bolts per bracket into the stairs). e. Ensure the rail is in the final position and then tighten the mounting brackets to the rail. Figure 6 Rail Figure 7 Mounting brackets Standard bracket Slide T-bolts into these slots Extension brackets

Page 9 Step 7 Install optional flip-up rail (as required) Follow these steps if the unit has the optional flip-up rail section. Follow the standard rail installation procedure to install the rail, To install the rail mounting brackets for the flip-up rail section, fold down the flip-up rail section first (see below). Install the rail mounting brackets in the same manner as for the standard rail. Figure 9 Refer to STEP 6 on the previous page for the standard rail installation procedure. This section provides information for the optional flip-up rail section only. The flip-up rail section comes pre-assembled to the bottom rail section with the charger wires in place and the bus line brass charging strips already installed in the rail. Figure 8

Page 10 Step 8 Install fuse in carriage Install the fuse (30A) in the carriage. NOTE For public units, there is a second 30A fuse for the E-stop button on the arm. 1 Remove the carriage top cover (four screws). Note that two of these screws are above and below the key switch on the side of the carriage. 2 Verify that the two batteries are installed side by side in the carriage housing and secured in place with a strap. 3 Check that the positive (red) and negative (black) battery connectors are plugged in to each battery. Figure 10 Batteries pre-installed 4 Unscrew the fuse holder, insert the 30A fuse and then screw the fuse holder closed. 5 Reinstall the carriage top cover (four screws). Figure 11 Fuse holder

Page 11 Step 9 Install carriage on rail Install the carriage on the rail. 1 Before installing the carriage on the rail, verify the tightness of the steel rack in all sections of the rail. 2 Use the carrying handles on the front and back of the carriage to bring the carriage to the top of the stairway. BE CAREFUL THE CARRIAGE IS HEAVY. 3 Lift the carriage up to the end of the rail, oriented so the key switch and ON/OFF switch are facing toward the bottom of the stairway. 4 Make sure the rollers line up with the rail and your handles are parallel to the floor, and then carefully slide the carriage onto the rail. Figure 12 NOTE IMPORTANT Always make sure the overspeed governor is set before installing the carriage on the rail. Refer to STEP 24 later in this manual to set the overspeed governor as necessary. Carriage Carriage post/ footrest assembly (not yet installed) c. Use the remote to move the carriage down the rail far enough to install the top section of steel rack. 6 Insert the previously cut top section of steel rack into the rail as follows: a. First, check this piece of rack for fastener holes. You need at least two fasteners to secure this short section to the top of the rail. b. If the piece of rack can be secured with two fasteners, follow the steps below: Mesh the top rack section with the existing rack section using an inverted piece of rack as shown below. Position the inverted piece of rack over the rack joint and then tap down on the inverted piece to pull the sections of rack together. Install and tighten the hardware to secure the rack section in place. c. If the piece of rack cannot be secured with two fasteners, exchange this short piece with the one below it in the rail as follows: Remove the second section of steel rack from the rail, insert the short piece in the middle, and then reinstall the section you removed. Mesh the rack sections tightly together using an inverted piece of rack as shown below. Position the inverted piece of rack over the rack joint and then tap down on the inverted piece to pull the sections of rack together. Install and tighten the hardware to secure the top rack sections in place. Figure 13 Rail 5 To install the top section of steel rack, you need to move the carriage down the rail. a. Turn on the key switch and press the ON/OFF switch to ON to turn on the unit. b. Install batteries in the remote controls and program as follows: Turn on power to the carriage. Push and hold the remote program button on the circuit board in the carriage and the amber LED will come on. Push any button on the remote and the amber LED will go off. Release the program button on the board. The remote is now programmed. Repeat the above procedure for the second remote. Note: If there are two SL-1000 units in the same area, remove the back cover of the remotes and change the DIP switch settings to a different combination and reprogram. Mesh rack

Page 12 Step 10 Install bus lines in rail Install the bus lines in the front and back of the rail. There are two rolls of brass contact strip and two pieces of white plastic casing to be assembled for each bus line. You will install a bus line on each side of the rail as shown in Figure 13 at the right. c. Carefully feed the bus line assembly (consisting of the brass contact strip already inserted in the white plastic housing) into the rail, ensuring it does not catch on the charging plunger. Be sure it is oriented so the hole in the bus line contact strip is at the end of the rail where the charger will be connected. d. Repeat for the second bus line assembly. Figure 15 NOTE The positive bus line is always on the rack side. 1 Follow the steps below to install the bus lines. a. Run the carriage about 1/2 way down the rail. b. Check the brass contact strips and if necessary, trim off the end piece that is pre-stamped for a push-on spade connector. Do not cut off the hole. c. Insert the brass contact strip into the white plastic casing to create each bus line. You will insert this complete bus line assembly into the rail. d. Determine the length of bus line (plastic casing and contact strip) required. For the length of plastic casing needed, measure the length of the track and then subtract 2 (50.8 mm) (see Figure 14). The brass contact strip must be 1/2 (12.7 mm) shorter than the plastic casing. Bus line (-) Bus line (+) Rack side Figure 14 White plastic casing = track length minus 2 Brass contact strip = casing length minus 1/2 Figure 16 a. Use these measurements to mark and cut the brass contact strip and white plastic casing. Do not cut the end of the bus line with the connection hole. b. Pull approximately 1 (25.4 mm) of brass strip out of the plastic casing on the leading edge to feed into the rail. Bend this 1 extension slightly downward so it creates a bevel towards the centre of the rail when inserted. This bevel will allow you to easily feed the bus line past the charging plunger in the carriage (Figure 16). Bus line charging plungers

Page 13 Step 11 Connect charger to bus lines Connect the charger to the positive and negative bus lines in the rail and then install the bus line stopper for the positive bus line only. The charger can be installed at the top or bottom of the rail as required, depending on where your wall outlet is located. Ensure the bus lines are installed so the hole in the contact strip is at the end of the rail where you want to connect the charger. NOTE 3 On the NEGATIVE bus line side of the rail, pull the brass contact strip far enough out of the white plastic housing so you can fasten it directly to the rail. Note that you already drilled a hole in the rail for the negative bus line connection to the rail (Step 6, substep 2). 4 Secure the charger BLACK wire ring terminal and brass contact strip directly to the rail through this hole using the M3 self-tapping screw provided. Figure 18 Negative connection BLACK wire The positive bus line is always on the same side of the rail as the gear rack. 1 Secure the charger wire ring terminal to the POSITIVE bus line contact strip on the RACK side of the rail using the hardware provided. 2 Install the bus line stopper at the end of the rail on the POSITIVE bus line side only (shown below). a. You already drilled a hole in the rail for the positive bus line stopper (Step 6, sub-step 2). b. Secure the stopper to the rail through this hole using the M3 self-tapping screw provided. c. Slide the bus line up against the stopper and position the charger wire so it sits in the saddle of the stopper as shown.
