82 Pullers Introduction For many years, Sykes-Pickavant have been renowned for providing high quality, innovative puller solutions. A huge variety of different puller designs, both hydraulic and mechanical, are available to cover a wide range of applications:- Puller Types Hydraulic Pullers These have a simple, grease filled ram instead of a mechanical force screw, producing extra power with ease. The spring loaded plunger provides direct, non twisting application of thrust, offering greater efficiency and security Mechanical Pullers These use a mechanical force screw Thin Jaw Pullers Available in both hydraulic and mechanical forms, these have special legs for use where clearance behind the gear or bearing is limited Separators For where all round support is required or where there is insufficient space for standard puller legs Slide Hammers Used when there is no shaft, making a conventional puller unsuitable Blind Housing Bearing Removers These operate without the need to dismantle machinery or remove the running shaft How to choose the right puller for the job Always use a 3 leg puller where possible. This gives a better load distribution Decide what spread is required. This is determined by the diameter of the part to be pulled Decide what reach is required. This must be at least equal to, or larger than the depth of the part that needs removal Estimate the force required. More force may be required for rusted parts or where there is large area of surface contact. Hydraulic pullers allow maximum force to be applied with minimum effort. Alternatively, choose a puller whose force screw diameter is at least half the size of the shaft of the item to be removed. If in doubt, use the next largest using an undersized puller may well slow down the job and may even prove ineffective. All Sykes-Pickavant pullers are made to a very high specification, but care should be taken to ensure that they are used safely and in accordance with good workshop practice. Always follow instructions where provided. Hand and eye protection should be worn. 82
