4 1 Regulations and Provisions 1.1 Remarks on this Technical Instruction This Technical Instruction describes transport, assembly, operation, handling and maintenance of the series HVX vacuum circuit breakers. It must be stored so that it is at any time readily accessible and can be used by persons who work on the circuit-breaker or the switchgear with this circuit-breaker. When re-selling the circuit-breaker or the switchgear with circuit-breaker, make sure that this Technical Instruction is transmitted as well. The following additional documents must be observed for this circuitbreaker: Purchase agreement containing the stipulations on the specific equipment of the circuit-breaker and the legal details. The contract specific circuit breaker wiring diagram / documentation Project notes regarding the HVX circuit breaker For assembly and operation of the circuit-breaker, the operating manual of the switchgear in which it is operated must be complied with. As our products are subject to continuous further development, we reserve the right to changes regarding standards, illustrations and technical data. All dimensions not specified in detail are in millimeters. 1.2 Terms and symbols used This Technical Instruction uses certain terms and symbols. They warn about dangers or provide important information which must be complied with at all costs so as to avoid danger and damage: Warning This warning symbol indicates dangerous electrical voltage. Contact with voltage may result in fatal injury! Warning This warning symbol indicates danger of injury. Observe alle instructions that are labeled with this sign to avoid death or serious injury. Important This notice symbol is used for information which is important to avoid damage. 1.3 Use in line with the intended purpose The HVX vacuum circuit-breaker is intended exclusively as a switching unit in air-insulated medium-voltage switchgear. It may only be used in the scope of the specified standards and the switchgear-specific technical data. Any other use constitutes improper use and may result in dangers and damage. Operating reliability and service life depend on correct operation. Disclaimer of liability The manufacturer shall not be held responsible for damage which occurs if instructions in this Technical Instruction are not complied with, the circuit-breaker is not operated according to its intended use (see above), the circuit-breaker is assembled, connected or operated improperly, accessories or spare parts are used which have not been approved by the manufacturer, the circuit-breaker is converted without the manufacturer's approval, or if inadmissible parts are attached. 4

5 1.4 Applied standards The three-pole HVX vacuum circuitbreaker corresponds to the requirements for AC switchgear for voltages above 1 kv acc. to IEC ; complies, regarding its switching capacity and insulating level, ANSI C37... (please enquire at the manufacturer's) corresponds, as a withdrawable unit, to IEC Type approval of vacuum interrupter chambers acc. to. RöV The vacuum interrupter chambers have been approved by the X-Ray Ordinance (RöV) of the Federal Republic of Germany up to a maximum voltage amounting to the rated shorttime power-frequency voltage (rated power frequency withstand voltage) defined by DIN VDE/IEC. Thus, they satisfy the conditions for operation exempt of approval up to the voltage in question according to the X-Ray Ordinance (RöV). Environmental and operating conditions HVX circuit-breakers may only be operated under normal operating conditions acc. to IEC Operation under conditions deviating from these is only admissible upon consultation and with the written approval of the manufacturer. Applicable standards and regulations: The locally applicable accident prevention, operating and work instructions must be complied with. Installation 2) : IEC / HD 637 S1 Operation of electrical equipment 2) : EN ) The national standards applicable in the country where the equipment is to be installed must be complied with. Read these instructions carefully before you work on the circuit-breaker, and perform the work detailed in it according to the descriptions. Do not perform any work on the circuitbreaker which is not described in this Technical Instruction. Warning! Before starting work on the circuit-breaker, deenergize the system, verify it for zero voltage and earth the system according to the applicable safety rules pursuant to EN Warning! Before performing work on the circuit-breaker, switch off the supply voltage and prevent it from reclosing. Warning! There is a risk of injury when working on the drive mechanism. Before commencing work, release the energy-storing device by performing the operating sequence OFF-ON-OFF and remount the drive s transport securing device (see Chapter 6). 1.6 Disposal after the end of service life A manual on disposal after the end of the service life is available for disposal of the HVX vacuum circuit breaker. Disposal at the end of the service life is performed as a service by the Service Center at the manufacturer's which is subject to a fee. Please contact the Service Center (see page 2). 5

8 3 Technical data 3.1 Type designation The type designation on the nameplate (Fig. 2.1) specifies essential technical data. The type designation (1) is broken down in this example. 9 3.3 Control and operating devices The circuit breaker has been designed on principle so as to permit manual operation. The drive mechanisms of the individual switching devices can be equipped, depending on the specific customer's model, with additional electrical control and operating devices. These are defined in the circuit breaker-specific wiring diagram ( see separate documentation). Maximum equipment opening release and secondary release: 3 units in total Anti-pumping relay If an ON and OFF command is simultaneously and permanently present at the circuit-breaker, the latter returns to its initial position after closing. It remains in this initial position until the ON command is issued anew. This prevents continuous closing and opening ("pumping"). Undervoltage release (optional) 1 ea. Blocking coil Blocking coils prevent the circuit breaker from being closed and opened via the push-buttons "ON" or "OFF", as well as manual actuation of the withdrawable part. If the rated supply voltage has fallen or is shut off, all blocking coils are in "blocked" position. 9

10 Auxiliary switch Auxiliary switches are always actuated directly by the switch shaft via an intermediate linkage. Their position always corresponds to that of the main contacts. The switching functions have been set in the factory according to the circuit diagram. The auxiliary switches may only be set by specialists who dispose of experience regarding the auxiliary switches installed. Auxiliary switches must not be disassembled. 11 4 Shipping instructions 4.1 Packaging As standard, the switching devices are packed in cardboard boxes and fastened on a pallet by means of two plastic straps. For sea transport, several cardboard boxes are additionally pakked in a closed crate (also in container transport). The crate is hot-sealed in aluminium foil with desiccant. 4.2 Delivery Handle shipping units carefully when unloading and unpacking them. Shipping units must be unpacked immediately after receipt. Any damage occurred in transit must be recorded and reported immediately to the manufacturer. On delivery, the consignment must be checked for completeness. The supplier must be notified in writing about any discrepancies. 4.4 Transport Transport using a forklift truck: Only transport the circuit-breaker on a pallet. Transport without pallet: Lift circuit-breaker acc. to Fig ropes (not metallic steel cables) Ø 12 to 15 mm or straps are required to this effect. Warning! Make sure the rope or strap is strong enough to bear the weight of the circuit-breaker. Type HVX Weight [kg] fixed type 230 withdrawable unit 330 (Guide values without packaging) HVX-E circuit-breakers with guide rollers on the withdrawable part (see also Fig. 5.4) must be placed on wooden bars or rails as shown in Fig. 4.1 in order not to damage the guide rollers. 4.3 Storage If the switching devices are not installed immediately upon delivery, they can be stored for max. 2 years if packed in hot-sealed aluminium foil with desiccant. The ambient conditions for storage must comply with the admissible operating conditions. Protect circuit breakers and accessories against condensation. Warning! 12 5 Assembly 5.1 Instructions for assembly Warning! Observe the safety provisions of chapter 1.5. Warning! Risk of injuries. The energy storing device must not be charged until assembly is finished. Dimension drawings are made available on request. Check technical data on nameplate. Check supply voltage for the control and operating devices installed. The vacuum circuit-breakers HVX-F and HVX-E are delivered in completely assembled and ready-to-operate condition. They are supplied in position "OFF" and with the energy storing device "released". 5.2 HVX-F Mechanical assembly Screws and attachments are not included in the scope of supply. Fastening the circuit-breaker Warning! The frame being used must be suitable to bear the weight of the circuit-breaker (see Chapter 4). Dimensions and arrangement of fasteners: see dimension drawing. Comply with the specified tightening torques (refer to Annex). Make sure not to distort the circuitbreaker when screw-fastening it. Earth terminal Design and dimensioning of the circuit-breaker's earth terminal acc. to IEC Select the cross section of and the material used for the earth conductor according to HD 637 S1 or the appropriate national work instruction. 13 Connecting conductor bars Aluminium conductor bars must not be connected to silver-plated connection areas of the circuit-breaker. Inadmissible matching of materials. Coat contact surfaces and comply with the specified tightening torques (refer to Annex). Take account of DIN and DIN regarding the dimensioning for continuous current. Maximum distance of the next support point from the circuitbreaker s terminals in the direction of the switch pole axis. 3 x the pole center spacing of the circuit-breaker (unless the next supporting point is located in the direction of the switch pole axis, make sure that the circuit-breaker pole is not exposed to higher electrodynamic forces). Screw-fasten conductor bar (take account of DIN ). The circuit-breaker must not be deformed by screw-fastening the conductor bars. 14 5.3 HVX-E Mechanical assembly A transport truck (optional) is used to rack the circuit-breaker into the switchgear panel (Fig. 5.6). For the design and method of operation of the transport truck used, please refer to the instructions for the panel in question. Placing the circuit-breaker on transport truck and racking it into the switchgear When performing the following assembly steps, observe and comply with the instructions given for the panel used. Optionally, HVX withdrawable units and panels may be coded to match (Fig. 5.4). This is to prevent a withdrawable unit from being racked completely into the panel if the rated data do not match. 1. Check the ratings indicated on the nameplate between the HVX-E and the appropriate panel. 2. Place the circuit-breaker on the transport trolley rails. Fig. 5.3 Transport truck with HVX-E circuit-breaker in front of the panel Lock the circuit-breaker on the transport trolley. 4. Couple the transport trolley to the panel. 5. Unlock the circuit-breaker from the transport trolley and rack the circuit-breaker into the panel. HVX withdrawable units for PIX panels must latch into the lock rocker of the panels (Fig. 5.4). HVX withdrawable units for PIX High Current Panels are anchored in the panel by actuation of the withdrawable part interlock (Fig. 5.5). 6. 15 Earth terminal The switching device potential is linked to the panel via the four wheels of the withdrawable part (Fig. 5.6). 5.4 Connecting the control lines The control lines are connected, depending on design, via control connectors (Fig. 5.9 and 5.10) or control lines to the terminal strips in the drive casing. The control lines are wired in the circuit-breaker up to the control connector or up to the terminal strip. Connector interlock in case of HVX-E: The control connector on the panel can only be inserted or removed while the circuit-breaker is in disconnected position. Connection to terminal strip 1. Remove the cover plate. 2. Connect external control lines via the terminal strip (Fig. 5.11). The valid wiring diagram has been enclosed with each circuit-breaker. If additional control lines are placed in the drive casing, leave a sufficient distance from the movable parts of the drive. 3. After connecting the external control line, mount the cover plate. Comply with the tightening torques specified for screw-fastening (refer to Annex). 16 6 Commissioning Check circuit-breaker for external damage. Make sure that there are no external parts in the circuit-breaker compartment. Check surface of insulating components for impurities. If necessary, clean (see Chapter 8). Observe the operating and locking conditions (Chapter 7). The energy storing device of motorized circuit-breakers is charged automatically once the supply voltage is applied. Undervoltage releases (optional) enable switching tests only to be performed with the supply voltage applied. Remove transport protection Observe the warning and notification plates on the front cover and in the drive (Fig. 6.1). The circuit-breaker is equipped with a transport securing device in the drive (Fig. 6.1). Remove transport securing device before commissioning: 2 1. Remove front cover. 2. Remove transport securing device (red) by releasing the threadcutting screw M5 using a wrench of TORX-Nr. T25 (Fig. 5.2). Store the device for maintenance work. 3. Secure front cover again using the screws. 17 6.1 HVX-E (withdrawable unit) Perform functional tests: 1. Charge energy-storing device using the crank. Check the spring position indicator. 2. Switch circuit-breaker on and off several times by hand. Check position indicator. 3. Move the withdrawable part to its service and disconnected position via the crank handle. Check mechanical interlocks between the HVX-E and the cell. Check position indication. 4. Check electrical functions of control and operating devices. Apply supply voltage. 5. Actuate the releases to perform switching operations and check functions/interlocks. Watch position indicators. 6. Rack the circuit-breaker in and out via the motor-drive (optional). At the same time, check the position indicators and the interlocks in the circuit-breaker and with regard to other devices. 6.2 HVX-F (fixed type) Check assembly work: Check securing bolts. Check the conductor bars' screw couplings using a torque wrench. Check the screw coupling of the earth terminal. Perform functional tests: 1. Charge energy-storing device using the crank. Check the spring position indicator. 2. Switch circuit-breaker on and off several times by hand. Check position indicator. 3. Check electrical functions of control and operating devices. Apply supply voltage. 4. Actuate the releases to perform switching operations and check functions / interlocks. Watch position indicators. 5. Check interlocks between circuitbreaker and other devices. 17

19 7.2 Interlocks Warning! You must be familiar with these interlocks before operating the circuit-breaker. Mechanical interlocks The HVX switch features basic interlocks to prevent operating errors. Electrical interlocks have been designed according to the circuit diagram. Do not apply force! The opening for the moving crank handle is locked The circuit-breaker cannot be switched on or off 7.3 Charging the energy storing device Manually Move circuit-breaker in "ready-forclosing" position: 1. Insert crank into opening for tensioning the energy storing device (Fig. 7.5). 2. Charge the spiral spring using the spring charging crank. As soon as the spiral spring is charged, the spring charging mechanism is decoupled and the position indicator signals "charged" (Fig. 7.5). If the motor starts during this process, this does not constitute a risk. 3. Remove crank. The circuit-breaker is ready for closing (table in chapter 7.4, Pos. 2). Via motor The energy storing device of motorized circuit-breakers is charged automatically as soon as the supply voltage is applied. 19

20 7.4 Switching the circuit breaker Closing (ON) Push button "ON" (I) or Opening (OFF) l 0 Push button "OFF" (O) or actuate closing release electrically The position indicator shows the switch position "ON" (table item 3). The position of the auxiliary switch has changed. The energy storing device can be charged immediately after switching ON (by hand or by motor). If supply voltage is applied to the motor, charging is performed automatically. The position indicator shows the energy storing device position "charged" (table item 4). actuate via opening release or by undervoltage release or secondary release The position indicator shows the switch position "OFF" (table item 1 or 2). The position of the auxiliary switch has changed. 22 8 Servicing 8.1 Safety Only specialist electricians certified by the manufacturer for maintenance work regarding series HVX vacuum circuit-breakers and who have the required knowledge regarding operation of medium-voltage switchgear are permitted to perform maintenance and cleaning work. Warning! Observe the safety provisions of Chapter 1.5. Warning! Risk of injury: The circuit-breaker must not be disassembled for maintenance work. Servicing schedule 1. On principle, the 5 safety rules applicable for electrical engineering must be complied with before maintenance work on the circuit-breaker is started: Isolate switchgear from power supply Prevent it from reclosing Verify it for zero voltage Earth and short-circuit it Cover or bar off adjacent live components. 2. Switch off the supply voltage for the circuit-breaker drive and secure it against reclosing. 3. Release the energy-storing device by performing the corresponding operating sequence on the circuit-breaker OFF ON OFF (see Chapter 7) and re-mount the drive s transport securing device (see Chapter 6). 8.2 Servicing schedule Series HVX vacuum circuit-breakers require regular inspections. The intervals depend on the strain to which the switches are subject during operation, and on the operating conditions. In case of frequent condensation or air pollution (dust, smoke or corrosive gases), the maintenance intervals must be adapted to the actual conditions. IMPORTANT: The circuit-breaker operating company is responsible for complying with the specified maintenance intervals and for performing maintenance according to the actual operating and ambient conditions. In case of queries or ambiguities, please contact the manufacturer. Maintenance intervals (ambient conditions according to IEC ) at least every 4 years after 20 years after 10,000 operating cycles of the circuit breaker after 1,000 operating cycles of the withdrawable part once the max. admissible number of breaking operations for the vacuum chambers has been reached (see section 8.7) Maintenance work Check for contamination/condensation and damage If necessary, clean circuit-breaker/withdrawable part (see section 8.3) and perform several switching tests Clean, grease circuit-breaker/withdrawable part (see Chapter 8.3 and 8.6) and perform several switching tests Check releases and blocking coils for proper working order Revision of the circuit breaker Revision of the withdrawable part Replace vacuum chambers Qualification/position performing the work Staff qualified accordingly for the work to be done Manufacturer's Service Center 22

23 8.3 Cleaning insulating components To ensure the specified insulating level, the insulating components must be clean. On principle, general cleanliness of the circuit-breaker or of its external parts should be ensured. Use a dry cleaning cloth for slight soiling: Clean by means of a dry, lint-free cloth. Depending on dirt collected, replace cloth as often as necessary. Use cleaning agents for severe soiling: Cleaning agent, 1 l can (see Chapter 9.2). The use of other cleaning agents is not admissible. Wear protective gloves Use cleaning agent according to manufacturer's instructions Soak the cloth thoroughly and wipe the insulating components. Keep duration of exposure as short as possible. Expose the cleaned surface to the air for at least two hours. When performing cleaning, make sure that the lubrication in the drive mechanisms is not removed. If the drive mechanisms are no longer sufficiently lubricated, new lubrication must be applied. 8.4 Corrosion protection Drive mechanisms and covers have a long-term protection against corrosion. Any damage to the paint, scratches and other damage must be repaired immediately to avoid corrosion. Contact the manufacturer's Service Center. 8.5 Avoid condensation To ensure the specified insulating level, the circuit-breaker - especially its insulating components - must not be exposed to condensation. Measures to take in case of condensation: 1. If condensation of the circuitbreaker is detected, the switching device must be cleaned according to section Inspect or install heating. It must provide a sufficient heating performance to prevent condensation on the circuit-breaker. 23

24 8.6 Lubrication instructions Warning! Comply with safety provisions (Chapter 1.5). Warning! Risk of injury: Circuit-breakers and drives must not be disassembled for service and maintenance work. The following elements must not be lubricated: - Motor - Electric releases - Push switches - Blocking coils - Auxiliary switches - Ball bearings Only approved lubricants may be used (section 9.2). Preparation Remove the withdrawable part from the switchgear cubicle for inspection (see instructions for the panel concerned). Remove the cover plate of the circuit-breaker drive and remount the drive s transport securing device.
