1 Installation Instructions 1370 DC Loop Contactors and Lug Kits 1370 DC Contactors are electromagnetically held contactors specially designed to switch the armature current from a DC drive module to a shunt wound DC motor. When used with the appropriate control logic design, these contactors can disconnect the motor armature from the DC drive module when a stop is initiated or in the event of a power failure. This publication contains the information needed to install, connect and maintain the 1370 DC Loop Contactor. ATTENTION: The National Electrical (NEC) and local codes outline provisions for safely installing electrical equipment. Installation must comply with specifications regarding wire types, conductor sizes, branch circuit protection and disconnect devices. Failure to do so may result in personal injury and/or equipment damage. ATTENTION: Incorrectly applied or installed DC contactors can result in component damage or a reduction in product life. Wiring or application errors, such as improper wire sizing or excessive ambient temperatures may result in a malfunction of these devices. ATTENTION: Open and lock-out the main supply disconnect and all other power source disconnects to avoid hazard of electrical shock or injury from unintended actuation of controlled equipment. Introduction Unpacking and Inspection Remove all packing material, wedges, or braces from within the contactor. If any part of the equipment will not be installed when it is unpacked, it must be stored in a clean, dry place. The storage temperature must be between -30 and 65 C (-22 and 149 F) and a humidity range of 5 to 95%, non-condensing, to guard against damage to components. Refer to the Catalog Number Explanations provided on the following page. Operation When the coil is energized, the magnet closes. The contact carrier moves upward into place and closes the power contacts. Movable contact springs are used to provide proper contact seating. Shock absorbing pads are provided in the cover and base assemblies to reduce the impact of pickup and drop-out.

The choice of an appropriate NEMA enclosure type for the application is important. Special considerations should also be given to the wire bend radius and wire clearances. Refer to page 6 for lug kit information. ATTENTION: The contactor must be mounted in a vertical position. Failure to observe this mounting practice will result in improper operation of the contactor and possible personal injury. Refer to the National Electrical and Local s for specific installation guidelines.

Install the suppressor on the contactor coil using the instructions provided below. Important: Component damage may occur if more than 132V AC is applied to the suppressor. 1. Loosen coil terminal clamps. 2. Slide surge suppressor onto coil terminals. 3. Place coil circuit conductors between suppressor terminals and coil terminal clamps. 4. Tighten coil terminal clamps securely. Wiring Figure 2 shows a typical wiring diagram. Refer to Figure 3 for specific terminal identification and Table B for torque requirements.

5 1370 DC Loop Contactors and Lug Kits 5 When wiring dynamic braking resistors, use wire with a current capacity at least 1/2 that of the full load current rating of the motor. Important: Consult the National Electrical and local codes for specific guidelines on wire size and type for dynamic braking resistor application. Auxiliary Contacts Auxiliary contact assemblies can be used on all contactor ratings. The N.O. auxiliary contact is designed to be open when the contactor is de-energized. The N.C. auxiliary contact is designed to be closed when the contactor is de-energized. One N.O. auxiliary contact assembly is supplied on the contactor in position P1 for use with the DC drive module enable function. Additional auxiliary contact assemblies may be installed in positions P2, P3 and P4 contactors. Placement on 56 and 110 amp contactors will depend on the type of contact assembly that can be installed in the vacant P2 and P3 positions between the forward and reverse contactors. Installation ATTENTION: Open and lock-out the main supply disconnect and all other power source disconnects to avoid hazard of electrical shock or injury from unintended actuation of controlled equipment. 1. Turn the drive circuit breaker OFF and remove cabinet power. 2. Align arrows on the reverse side of the contact and locate the tabs. 3. Insert the auxiliary contact, tabs first, into the appropriate position on the side of the contactor. Push, to lock the contact in place. 4. Select the desired terminals and connect the corresponding wires. Replacement 1. Turn the Drive circuit breaker OFF and remove cabinet power. 2. Loosen the Coil Cover and pull the auxiliary contact straight out.

6 DC Loop Contactors and Lug Kits Lug Kits Rated Motor DC Contactor Armature Current (1) Rating A DC A DC 1370 Lug Kits provide the required lugs to terminate wires on 1370 DC Loop Contactors. When properly installed, the lugs will provide a secure and gas-resistant termination. The Lug Kit contains (2) DB Lugs and (4) Armature Line and Load Lugs. To install the lugs a Thomas & Betts Corporation Compression Tool, model TBM6 or TBM6S is required. Using the information provided in Table A, verify that the proper Lug Kit was selected for your application. The current listed in the table (column 1) is the maximum current allowed for the Armature Conductor Size (column 3) and the DC Contactor Rating (column 2). (2) The armature conductors are sized by multiplying the Rated Motor Armature Current by 1.25 as provided for in NEC (1987). The DC lug ratings are determined from NEC Table (1987) for copper conductors, insulation temperature rated at 75 C (167 F) at an ambient temperature of 30 C (86 F). If conditions are other than shown in NEC Table then refer to applicable codes. (3) The dynamic braking (DB) conductors are sized as in Note 2, but at half ampacily due to the short time duration of current flow in these conductors, and has been sized to satisfy NEMA Standard ICS Dynamic Braking. If the load inertia is larger than that of the motor, calculations must be made to determine correct conductor sizing and DB resistor wattage per NEMA Standard ICS

7 1370 DC Loop Contactors and Lug Kits 7 The following procedure describes the steps required to properly install the lugs. The recommended compression tool is the Thomas & Betts Corporation Compression Tool model TBM6 or TBM6S. ATTENTION: To maintain the UL listing and CSA certification on the 1370 contactor, you must use a Thomas & Betts Corporation Compression Tool TBM6 or TBM6S and follow the instructions provided with the tool. Improper crimping can result in overheating, fire and/or personal injury. ATTENTION: To guard against personal injury, ensure that fingers are kept clear of die nests whenever the tool handles are brought together. Most compression tools are designed with a full stroke compelling mechanism, thus making release of the handles difficult after initial closure. Consult the manufacturers instructions for your compression tool prior to operation. 1. Ensure that power to the drive has been removed. 2. Carefully prepare the ends of the UL listed or recognized and/or CSA certified wire, install the appropriate lug and crimp. Repeat for remaining lugs/wires. 3. Using the screws/bolts supplied with the contactor, connect the lugs to the appropriate terminals. Tighten to the torque requirements listed in Table B. Refer to Figure 3 for lug and terminal identification. Important: When torquing the screws/bolts to the proper value, assure that all exposed electrical wires/lugs have the proper voltage spacings according to UL 508 and or CSA 22.2, No. 14. Table B Contactor Terminal Torque Requirements Load and Line Terminals Dynamic Braking Terminals Torque Torque Contactor Screw/Bolt Size N-m (lb.-in.) As a result of normal use, the contacts will eventually begin to deteriorate. Periodic inspection of these contacts should be part of any drive system preventative maintenance program. If contact inspection reveals severe erosion on the power pole contacts, it is recommended that the power poles (if possible) or contactor be replaced. Replacing the contactor will help reduce the effects of uneven and unequal contact closings. If the contactor has not been used for an extended period of time, a brief inspection for mechanical integrity and contact corrosion should be made before use.
