1 Subaru WRX MRT Turbo Back Exhaust System Part No. 98P113 STOP Verify that all of the following components are included in kit before beginning installation: Part #1 J-Pipe / Downpipe Part #2 Mid-Pipe Part #3 Cat-Back Inlet Pipe Part #4 Driver Side Muffler Assembly Part #5 Passenger Side Muffler Assembly (4) 3 Band Clamps Required Tools: Ratchet Extension Swivel 10mm, 12mm, 14mm Sockets 12mm & 13mm Wrenchs Oxygen Sensor Wrench or 7/8 Flathead Screwdriver Part #98P113 Page 1 of 6

2 Torque Specifications Use factory torque specs when installing any stock components unless otherwise stated. Band clamps - 30lb/ft-35lb/ft. Do not use impact on band clamps, overtightening can result in damaged clamp. Warranty Information IMPORTANT The warranty on this product is VOID if the product is not properly installed, or has been modified or altered in any way. If you believe that modification will be required to fit an MRT Exhaust System on your vehicle, please contact MRT for assistance BEFORE making any modifications to the system. Begin with removing factory exhaust system: Step 1: Starting at the rear of the vehicle, remove the hardware connecting the flanges from the factory mufflers to the Y- pipe. To remove the mufflers from the vehicle slide the hanger rods located on the front and rear portion of each muffler out of the rubber isolators. Part #98P113 Page 2 of 6

3 Step 2: Remove the hardware connecting the Y-pipe to the rear catalyst/resonator tube. There will be one hanger near the rear differential, with an extra set of hands remove the hanger rod from the rubber insulator and remove the pipe from the vehicle. Step 3: Remove the hardware connecting the intermediate tube to the J-pipe / catalyst housing. With an extra set of hands to support the intermediate tube remove use a 14mm socket to remove the bolt connecting the J-pipe to the transmission support bracket. Step 4: To access the J-pipe the plastic splash shield and metal skid plate will need to be removed. First remove the eleven push pins with the flathead screwdriver and 12mm socket for the two bolts. With an extra set of hands to support the skid plate remove the four bolts with the 12mm socket and set the skid plate aside. Keep all hardware removed from splash shield and skid plate for re-installation of these components. Step 5: Disconnect the oxygen sensors from the wiring harness and with a oxygen sesor wrench remove the sensors for the catalyst housing. Use a 10mm socket to remove the stock ground strap from the J-pipe. Part #98P113 Page 3 of 6

4 Step 6: Remember the orientation at which the support bracket and heat sheid are currently installed. Using a 14mm socket remove the bolts from the turbo support bracket and heat shield then remove from the vehicle. Step 7: To aid in removal and installation using the 12mm socket loosen bolts on the upper turbo support bracket but do not remove entirely. Step 8: Using the 14mm socket remove the nuts connecting the J-pipe flange to the turbo housing. Three of the nuts will be easily accessible, the fourth will require ratchet extension and swivel to remove. With all four nuts removed carefully remove the J-pipe / catalyst housing from the vehicle. Leave the factory J-pipe to turbo housing gasket in place, it will be reused for installation on MRT J-pipe. Part #98P113 Page 4 of 6

5 Installation steps for the MRT Exhaust System Starting With The J-Pipe Portion: Step 1: Place the factory gasket onto the turbo housing studs and install the oxygen sensors into the MRT J-pipe. Step 2: Position the J-pipe onto the turbo housing studs and install the bolt connecting the J-pipe to the transmission support bracket for balance. Step 3: Install the lower two nuts connecting the J-pipe to the turbo housing. Position the upper bracket onto the upper studs and install the nuts. Step 4: With the J-pipe to turbo housing nuts tightened down install the bolt that connects the upper bracket to the engine block. Install the heat shield and retighten the upper bracket bolts that were loosened in step 7. Step 5: Plug the oxygen sensors back into the wiring harness and insert the retaining clips into their provisions and install the ground strap onto the pipe. Step 6: Place one of the supplied 3 band clamp on the outlet portion of the J-pipe. Slide the mid-pipe onto the J-pipe, position the band clamp at the connection with an 1/8 overlap for a secure connection and snug the clamp. Do not tighten yet. Step 7: Place a 3 band clamp on the outlet of the mid-pipe. Slide the cat-back inlet pipe onto the mid-pipe. Insert the hanger rod into the rubber insulator and position the clamp in the same orientation as the previous step and snug the clamp. Do not tighten yet. Step 8: Place a 3 band clamp on the outlet of the cat-back inlet pipe and install the driver side muffler assembly. Insert the hanger rod near the exhaust tip into the rubber instulator and position the clamp in the same orientation as previous and snug the clamp. Do not tighten yet. Step 9: Place a 3 band clamp on the driver side muffler assembly tube leading towards the passenger side. Install the passenger side muffler assembly and insert the hanger rod into the rubber insulator. Position the clamp in the same orientation and snug. Do not tighten yet. Step 10: Starting with the front of the vehicle, ensure the J-pipe nuts are torqued to factory specs. From there work towards the rear of the vehicle tightening each band clamp while maintaining tip alignment. Each band clamp should be tightened to 30ft/lb 35ft/lb using hand tools. The use of an impact can cause damaged to the clamps if over tightened. Part #98P113 Page 5 of 6

6 Step 11: Check all connection points and start vehicle to check for leaks in a well ventilated area. If leaks are found review each step of the installation procedures and check for any missed steps in the process. Step 12: If no leaks are found take vehicle for a drive and enjoy your new MRT exhaust system During vehicle operation heat cycles tubing will expand and contract, because of this we suggest checking all clamps retighten if necessary after 30 miles of driving vehicle.
