2 Type overview and recommended applications Tape type Pole Recommended sensor head width mm BML-M0_-I BML-S1A-... BML-M0_-I BML-S1A-... BML-M0_-I BML-S1B-... BML-M0_-I BML-S1C-...; BML-S1E-... Reference points in tape Magnetic tape BML-M0...R0000 is suitable for all sensor heads The pole-periodic magnetic tape has alternating magnetic south and north poles but no integrated reference point. The reference point function is implemented by means of a reference switch. Single reference point Magnetic tape BML-M0...Rxxxx suitable for all sensor heads except BML- S1C... For the magnetic tape with single reference point the reference point may be integrated as desired at any location. To determine the exact position, the reference move must cover the entire length of the tape up to the reference point. Distance x Distance x Distance x Distance x Magnetic tape BML-M0...Cxxxx suitable for sensor head BML-S1A... For tapes with fixed-periodic reference points the reference points are integrated across the entire length of the tape at certain constant intervals, such as every 10 cm. To obtain the exact position, the homing move must be made over the entire length of the tape up to the external reference switch, which selects the correct reference pulse from the sensor head (ANDoperation) Magnetic tape BML-M0...Axxxx suitable for sensor head BML-S1A... To simplify the principle involved, the reference points are shown as different, even though they are physically identical. For the magnetic tape with distance-coded reference points the reference points are arranged according to a mathematical algorithm. This makes it possible to know the absolute position as soon has you have passed over two reference points. This type of magnetic tape requires no external reference switch. 2
3 Ways of mounting the magnetic tape Note: Attach the tape parallel to the direction of travel and completely flat on the mounting surface. Wavy or skewed tapes will affect the measuring accuracy. To prevent linearity deviations, never stretch or compress the tape. Once glued do not remove (even partially) the tape. Strong non-linearity effects will be observed at the place where the tape was lifted. Keep magnetized parts away from the tape to prevent nonlinear effects. For optimum gluing an ambient temperature of 0 to 40 C is recommended. For tapes with a reference track you should identify the front and back end so that the tape is installed appropriately to the count direction of the sensing head. The reference point is visually marked (Fig. 4-5). Installation options (Fig. 1): Note: Thoroughly remove any oil, grease, dust, etc. (use acetone or similar) from the mounting surface and allow to dry completely. Item 1: Under normal environmental conditions simply stick the tape to a flat surface. Optionally stick on the protective cover strip. Item 2: In harsh environmental conditions protect the tape fully in a hub, so that it does not project above the surface. Optionally stick on a cover strip. Item 3: In extreme environmental conditions, protect the tape fully in a deeper hub, and cast it in place with a nonmagnetic compound (e.g. adhesive). The fill material can be leveled by lightly sanding. Item 4: Secure the ends of the tape, e.g. rivet them or screw down the cover strip. Tape cover Magnetic tape Machine Tape cover Tape in a hub Fill material Tape in a hub Securing the ends of the magnetic tape Fig. 1: Installation options for the tape Attach magnetic tape to a flat surface Note! The tape must be attached flush with the left and right side of the sensor head (see also user's guide for the sensor). 1. Thoroughly remove any oil, grease, dust, etc. (use acetone or similar) from the mounting surface and allow to dry completely. 2. For tapes with a reference position, identify front and back end: the reference point is visually marked and is located on the right side of the tape in its own track. It is essential for correct system operation that the reference track of the tape lies on the right hand side of the sensor head. If the tape has no reference position, no front-rear alignment is required. 3. Position the sensing head at the rear end of where the tape is to be attached (at the start of the measurement track). 4. Remove the adhesive protection film from the rear of the tape and gently press the tape home. 5. Remove a further length of adhesive protection film. 6. Move the sensing head a short distance further while aligning the tape flush with the left and right side of the sensing head. 7. ently press the tape behind the sensing head. Caution! Do not use a hard tool, otherwise the magnetic surface may be damaged! 8. Option: To protect the graduated strip against mechanical and chemical damage, stick on the stainless steel cover strip. Attaching magnetic tape to a cylindrical surface The magnetic tape may be adhered for example to a cylinder or shaft. The pole width is greater on the surface of the tape than in its middle. The greater the distance to the sensor, the greater the pole width and consequently the linearity deviation. To keep the linearity deviation as small as possible, note the following mounting instructions: The cylinder diameter must be greater than 95 mm. The range of movement must be less than 360. The distance between sensor and magnetic tape must be as close as possible. At a distance of 0.1 mm the linearity will hardly be affected. P = Pole width Fig. 2: The pole width depends on the distance from the sensor 3
