8 Vacuum System Operation Air, water, and solids from the operatory are pulled into the separator. Air is expelled out through the pump exhaust while water and solids f to the bottom of the tank. The vacuum in the separator keeps the check valve to the drain closed and the tank graduy fills. The rising fluid level eventuy closes the top float switch, which turns the pump off. Since vacuum is no longer being maintained, the check valve opens owing water and solids to drain from the separator. The upper and lower reed switch floats interact as a latching circuit with the internal relay to release upon drain below the bottom float. : If the power is shut off, the unit will drain automaticy due to a loss of vacuum regardless of the water level in the tank. When the tank drains enough to open the bottom float switch, the pump starts running again. This restores vacuum and closes the check valve. : if the power is turned off, tank will drain completely. Earlier production units had three reed switch floats. The middle float was not used and is not insted in current production units. Drain Exhaust From Operatory Check Valve (Closed) Pump Operating Electrical Operation...A3 Troubleshooting...A4 Vacuum Air (Atmospheric Pressure) Water and Solids When no instruments (suction tips) are being used (HVEs shut off for 5 seconds or more) the system goes into sleep mode to save energy. Sleep mode pressure is set to 6 Hg. Vacuum pressure will ramp down from its normal operating pressure to sleep mode pressure when the unit goes to sleep. The sleep mode pressure is maintained at 6 Hg until the variable frequency drive (VFD) senses an increase in vacuum pressure is required when an instrument (suction tip) has been opened. The VFD will then speed up the motor to increase vacuum pressure to the normal operating pressure. 9 ON CTS Electrical System Operation When Main input power supply (230V) is on, it is supplying line voltage to the vacuum pump electrical system. The Main input power supply (230V) is supplied to the contactor, thermostat, fans, transformer, variable frequency drive (VFD), and the line filter. When the On/Off switch or master control switch are in their off state or the front panel is removed from the unit, the contactor will remain open and the input power will be connected to the input side of the contactor, thermostat, fans, and the transformer only. Vacuum Operation...A2 Troubleshooting...A4 Timer Bd. Std. after SN: V units prior to this can be updated When the contactor is energized, it closes and connects the main input power supply to the line filter. Main input power supply is then applied to the VFD through RL1 and SR2 (single phase). YL YL The transformer s output sends 24 volts AC to the PC board. 24 volts AC power is used to control the door limit switch, hour meter, and floats. The electronics on the PC board convert 24 VAC to 24 VDC for the pressure sensor though the means of a connector. Transformer Pressure Sensor When instruments (suction tips) are in use, the vacuum pump is running and claws are turning to build up vacuum pressure. The pressure sensor is constantly measuring the amount of vacuum pressure. When the pressure level drops below the vacuum set point (12 Hg factory setting), the pressure measurement initiates the VFD to speed up the motor. When pressure is above set point the VFD slows the motor down. Contactor Line Filter Fans Themostat VFD Box Parel Connection When the vacuum is shut off from the remote switch the timer starts and will turn on the vacuum for one minute every two hours. (Standard on new units, older units can be upgraded) 230 VAC Line Voltage AA2486i On twin units a parel cable (4-pin Master / 6-pin Slave) connects the two base units on the side of the electrical box. The plumbing is connected using a tee assembly. The parel connection is controlled between variable frequency drives in a twin configuration. Twin units run the same as a single unit. Keypad, hour meter and fans are located on the outside of the base unit. Pressure sensor and float are located on the separator tank. Midmark Corporation 2010 SF-1943 [Revised: 11/2/15] A-3

17 Door Limit Switch & On/Off Switch (Circuit Breaker) Door Limit Switch Test...B-3 On/Off Switch Test...B-4 Location & Function With facility power (230 VAC) supplied to the system... The transformer continuously supplies 24 VAC to the normy-open door limit switch. With the front access cover in place... The plastic bumper on the top right side of the access cover, trips the door limit switch causing it to close. When the limit switch is closed, 24 VAC flows thru the switch to the PowerVac G circuit breaker (On/Off) switch. With the circuit breaker switch ON, current is supplied to the remote w switch (if applicable). Door Limit Switch If the facility does not have a remote w switch, the PowerVac G circuit breaker serves as the On/Off switch for the system. When the front access cover is removed... The door limit switch opens and stops current flow to the PowerVac circuit breaker. This is a safety feature that prevents the system from operating with the cover removed. 20 Float Assembly Location & Function Float Wire Connection Check Float...B-6 On earlier production units the float assembly contained three float (reed) switches mounted on a bracket at different intervals. Current units only have two float switches. The reed switch has contacts that remain open until the liquid in the separator rises, causing the float to rise until the magnet contacts the reed switch. When the magnet contacts the reed switch, the open contacts inside the reed closes. When the top float switch closes, the vacuum pump stop running until the bottom float opens and the cycle starts again. The upper and lower floats interact as a latching circuit with the internal relay to release upon drain below the bottom float. The magnet in the float is to activate the reed switch within the stem. Earlier production units had three reed switch floats. The middle float was not used and is not insted in current production units. Magnet Reed Switch Contacts are Open Until Magnet Closes Float Float To check if float switches are preventing pump from running... A) Turn power off at on/off switch. B) Remove float wire connection from rear of base by un-threading connector and removing. C) Turn power back on at on/off switch. D) If pump runs the tank is either full (not draining) or there is a issue with the floats proceed to next page. E) If the pump doesn t run proceed with troubleshooting the pump base. The pump will run if the issue is with the floats or tank is full. This is for testing purposes only! Continuing to run the vacuum with this connector unplugged can cause damage to the pump. Earlier production units had three reed switch floats. The middle float was not used and is not insted in current production units. When working on Twin units, unplug parel harness. To check float switches... A) Turn power off at on/off switch and main power supply box. B) Remove gasket on separator lid. C) Lift lid/float assembly out of tank and lay across top of tank, put floats in down position. D) Remove electrical panel cover. E) Turn supply power and unit ON. F) Set meter to Ώ. 23 Check Valve Check Valve Test...B-9 Location & Function The check valve located in the drain ows the separator to drain upon removal of vacuum pressure. When the pump is not running, the valve opens, owing liquids to drain. If the pump is running the valve closes to keep air in the drain from back flushing into the system. When insting check valve in horizontal position, confirm the hinge for the flapper is on top of the valve. Each vacuum pump in a multiple pump instation requires a check valve to be insted into the intake line. This prevents loss of suction pressure when one pump in the system is turned off. If no check valve is present, flow will be owed through the off pump, creating a loss of suction of the rest of the system.
