1 Congratulations. You ve just purchased the most advanced flasher available on the market today. This solid-state module is designed to interface with Ford s shutter system in each headlight assembly. When installed correctly, your vehicle s headlights operate normally when this module is deactivated. When activated, the shutter assembly is commanded to activate, allowing for the headlight bulbb to flash a high beam warning pulse. Should the vehicle s operator command usage of the headlights for steady burn, the FISOS module deactivates and returns control of the shutter system to the body control module (BCM). The Ford Interceptor s new headlight system utilizes a single filament bulb to provide low beam and high beam features. Because of this manufacturing limitation, FISOS was designed with advanced programming to allow its use during both day and night operations. Using any other headlight flasher on these vehicles for nighttime use would illuminate the roadway only 50% of the time and would create a driving hazard for the vehicle operator. 2 Product Placement: The headlight assembly in the Ford Taurus and Ford Explorer use the same connectors, so the FISOS module iss interchangeable between both vehicles. Installation is the same; however the ease of accessing the rear of each headlight assembly is different. The FISOS module should be installed by the driver s side headlight assembly. The kit includes a relay with harness and in-line line fuse to connect FISOS to the battery, which is conveniently located by the driver s side headlight. Ford Explorer: The he rear of each headlight is accessible from the engine compartment. Simply reach in and disconnect the headlight connector nector from the rear of the assembly. There is a space on the side panel directly behind the headlight that FISOS can be mounted to using the provided self self-tapping screws. Connect the short plug-n-play play harness connectors into their respective connectors of the vehicle s wire harness and headlight assembly. The driver s side integration is complete. Next, lay out FISOS s long wire harness along the front frame of the vehicle along a route that keeps it away from any hot or sharp surfaces to the passenger s side headlight assembly assembly. Disconnect the passenger s side headlight wire harness and connect the FISOS harness in between these connectors. The integration of FISOS into the vehicle is complete. Using the in-line line fuse and relay with hharness, find a suitable mounting location for your relay. Secure the relay and ground wire of the relay harness with the included self-tapping tapping screw and connect the o-ring o terminal to your battery s positive terminal. Connect your low power switch to the relay s trigger wire and connect the provided 15 amp in-line in fuse holder. The unit is ready to be activated and programmed (see below). Page 2 of 8

3 Ford Taurus: The rear of each headlight assembly is a little more complicated to get to. Access to the wire harness can only be done by removing the front wheel well cover. This will require the removal of three screws. You may want to remove the entire front bumper for easier access and mounting of the module, but installation can be accomplished without the bumper being removed. Installation: After you ve gained access to this area, locate and remove the black connectors on the headlight assembly. Mount the FISOS module on the support frame directly in front of you as you open the wheel well looking in. Connect the short male and female connectors of the FISOS module to their respective connectors of the vehicle s wire harness and headlight assembly. Next, feed the longer wire harness through the available openings into the engine compartment. Run this cable along the front frame of the vehicle along a route that keeps it away from any hot or sharp surfaces. Finally, feed the connectors through the aavailable openings to the rear of the passenger s side headlight assembly.. Open the right wheel well and install the connectors in between the vehicle s wire harness and headlight assembly. The integration of FISOS into the vehicle is complete. Using the in-line line fuse and relay with harness, find a suitable mounting location for your relay. Secure the relay and ground wire of the relay with the included self self-tapping screws and connect the o-ring o terminal to your battery s positive terminal. Connect your low amp switch to the relay s trigger wire and connect the provided 15 amp in-line in fuse holder. The unit is ready to be activated and programmed. Page 3 of 8

4 What s Next? In the following section, you will learn: How to select and program the desired flash pattern How to Active/Deactivate the nighttime cutoff feature How to program the single headlight feature for tailing a vehicle Pushbuttons: FISOS has three waterproof pushbuttons. The left button is the multi-purpose button, the middle is the scroll down button and the right is the scroll up button. Manipulating these buttons in a particular sequence is what allows you to access the multiple features of this module. Flash Pattern Selection: Selecting a flash pattern is easy. With the module oriented with the buttons on the bottom row, pressing either the center or right buttons will scroll down or up through the flash pattern list. Each pattern can then be manipulated for a more custom effect. Flash Pattern Manipulation: When you find your desired flash pattern, you can then change the speed and pulse count for that pattern. To change whether the flash pattern will display a single, double or even more pulses per headlight, simply press and hold the center and right buttons (scroll down and up). While holding these buttons down, press and release the left program button the number of times you wish for the headlights to illuminate. The headlights will flash each time the button is pressed. When you are done, release all the buttons. To change the speed of the flash rate, simple press and hold down the left program button and use either the scroll down or up buttons to slow down or speed up the flash pattern. The new effect will display when all buttons are released. Page 4 of 8

5 When manipulating the variable speed patterns (patterns 5-10), you can adjust the slow side of the flash pattern. This means you are able to adjust how long it takes to reach the peak of the pattern before it returns to the bottom of the flash rate. There are a total of 14 base flash patterns to choose from. Each pattern can be manipulated, giving you the option of literally hundreds of available patterns. To reset any given flash pattern to its default setting, hold down the program button followed by the scroll down and then scroll up buttons. Release all buttons to restore the original flash rate. Nighttime Override Feature: In certain states, headlight flashers are not allowed to be used at night. If your FISOS was not ordered pre-programmed for your desired application, then you can easily activate/deactivate this feature after the product has been installed. Non-DRL Version: If your flasher was made for vehicles with no daytime running lights, simply turn on your headlights and FISOS. To activate the nighttime cutoff, simply press the left program button on the FISOS module. Your flasher will turn off, giving you normal operation of your headlights at night. To deactivate the nighttime cutoff, follow the same instructions above. FISOS will resume flashing. DRL Version: If your flasher was made for vehicles with daytime running lights, make sure FISOS s WHITE wire is connected to your vehicle s parking lights. Turn on your parking lights and follow the instructions from above for turning on or off the nighttime cutoff feature. Surveillance Mode: Your FISOS module has been programmed with a unique feature. This feature provides the ability to disable the activation of one of your headlights. The purpose of this feature is to allow an officer the ability to discretely follow a suspect vehicle and give the appearance of being two separate vehicles when tailing someone at night. To activate this feature, supply +12 volts through a user provided switch to the BLUE wire on this module. When the headlights are turned on and the BLUE wire has +12 volts, one headlight will turn off. To swap which headlight will be off, simply push the left program button while this feature is on and the headlights are on. The deactivated headlight will turn back on and the opposite headlight will turn off. FISOS is preprogrammed to have the passenger s side headlight turned off upon activation of this mode, giving the driver more road illumination in front of him/her. You may change it to your liking after installing it. Page 5 of 8

6 One-Touch Deactivation/Activation: If you ever need to turn off your headlight flasher when it is activated, all you need to do is use your Flash-to-Pass switch. One pulse of your switch within two seconds will turn off the flasher. One more pulse within two seconds will reactivate the flasher. Multiple pulses do not trigger this feature, only a single pulse within two seconds. You no longer need a dedicated switch to deactivate your headlight flasher or turn off a group of lights like your grille lights should the trigger wire share the same supply. Why might you need this feature? This will be useful when responding in fog at night, when on-scene or even driving through kicked up dust on dirt roads, which makes driving more difficult. Finishing the Install: After everything has been installed, we recommend protecting these cables by enclosing them in wire loom and securing them in place using wire ties. This preserves your equipment for longer trouble-free service. Testing: After all connections have been made, you may test the operation of the low beam and high beam system as well as the headlight flasher and override system. With FISOS turned off, by activating your low beams and high beams, your headlights should operate normally. Next, activate FISOS. Your headlights should be flashing to the selected pattern. With your headlights flashing, activate your Flash-to-Pass switch. FISOS should stop flashing and your headlights should return to normal operation, turning on and off with every pull of the FTP switch. FISOS will resume control in two seconds. 7 Wiring Your Relay Harness: In order to properly connect the wires of your relay harness, please refer to the following instructions. The relay harness contains four wires. They are coded as follows: White wire positive wire for relay activation (terminal 86) Black wire negative wire for relay activation (terminal 85) Blue wire input supply connected to battery (terminal 30) Yellow wire output to FISOS module (terminal 87) The supplied mounting hardware includes: 2 heat shrink butt connectors, 1 small heat shrink ring connector, 1 medium heat shrink ring connector and 3 self tapping screws. The relay should be connected as follows: Attach the small ring connector to the BLACK wire. When you are ready to mount the relay, you will insert a self tapping screw through the ring connector, then through the mounting hole of the relay and into the metal frame of the vehicle. It must be attached to metal in order to complete the circuit for the relay to operate properly. The RED wire of the FISOS module will be connected to the YELLOW wire of the relay harness using the provided waterproof butt connector. Crimp the connector using the insulated crimping portion of the crimper to preserve the heat shrink tubing. Next, grab the in-line fuse holder and cut the wire loop in half giving you an equal length of wire on both sides. Connect the large waterproof ring connector to one side of the in-line fuse holder. Crimp and apply heat to the heat shrink to seal it. Next, use the remaining waterproof butt connector and connect the in-line fuse holder to the BLUE wire of the relay harness. Before crimping and sealing, make sure there is enough wire to reach your mounting locations. When you re all set, crimp and heat all the waterproof connections. Finally, connect the wire designated to activate the headlight flasher to the relay s WHITE wire. This can be its own activation wire or tapped into your front grille light s supply wire. Connect your medium ring connector to the battery terminal. There is a terminal stud with a nut already on the positive battery clamp. Secure the ring terminal using this stud and nut. You may now test your installation using the provided instructions. If you have any questions regarding this setup, please don t hesitate to contact us. Page 7 of 8

8 Warranty ERM warranties this FISOS Kit for 2 years from the date of purchase to the original purchaser against any manufacturer defects or workmanship. This warranty applies only to units installed and operated in accordance with these instructions. The owner will be responsible for returning any defective item(s) with transportation costs pre-paid. ERM will, without charge, repair or replace, at its discretion, the product(s), or part(s), which after examination by ERM, is found to be defective as the result of a defect in material and/or workmanship. Repaired or replaced item(s) will be returned to the purchaser with transportation costs paid by ERM. In order to qualify for the warranty, a copy of the purchaser's receipt must be returned with the defective item(s) and its original product date stamp. ERM's liability, under no circumstances, will exceed the price of the product(s) to be defective. This warranty does not extend to any product that has been subjected to disaster, accident, abuse, misuse, lightning, power surges, improper installation or which has been inadequately maintained, nor damage resulting from incompatible chemicals or cleaning material, any damage or defects occurring as a result of any unauthorized service or repairs by unauthorized persons, inappropriate or inadequate wiring or circuit protection or failure to follow instructions in any enclosed documents, such that in ERM's judgment, the performance or reliability has been affected. ERM retains the right to be the sole mediator of what constitutes defects in performance or manufacturing. Page 8 of 8
