The io-hem Valve Pinch Valve is a solenoid-operated device. It is designed to open and close tubing to achieve controlled fluid flow. Only the inside of the tubing contacts Solenoid rmature Plunger ody Spring Tubing the fluid. nergizing the solenoid retracts the valve plunger. This either opens the tubing (in the normally closed configuration, as shown left) or closes the tubing (normally open configuration). e-energizing the solenoid allows a spring to push the plunger back to its original position. This returns the tubing to its original closed or open position. 3-way valve has both a normally open and a normally closed flow path, which are operated simultaneously. The tubing is held in place by the plunger and precisely sized grooves in the valve body. Why choose a Pinch Valve? There are many reasons to use io-hem Valve Pinch Valves (refer to page 4 for more details) but pinch valves themselves have specific features that lend themselves to particular applications: Unobstructed flow path. Pinch valves create minimal pressure drop, which is important for controlling downstream instrumentation. Unobstructed flow is also important when handling fluids that might shear when forced to flow through complex valve internals (for more details see page 4). Tubing is soft yet durable. Pinch valves are highly tolerant of particulates in the fluid stream (for more details see page 4). Tubing is easy to change. The user can change tubes if a sterile fluid path is required (for instance, blood collection) or when chemicals create clogs (for instance, system waste lines). Zero dead volume. onsecutive samples are not contaminated by the previous one. luid contacts tubing only. The materials of construction of the body and plunger do not have to be highly corrosion resistant, which means pinch valves are often very economical when compared to alternatives. Simple. Pinch valves do not require complicated electronic controls - they are either energized or not. Pinch valves do support the use of Hit and Hold circuits which significantly reduce the power required to hold the valve in its energized position (for more detail see the oolube on page 14).

The customer should provide a sample of tubing to io-hem luidics, who will select the appropriate valve size and adjust the stroke and force settings to match the tubing diameter and durometer. io-hem luidics will assign a special part number to this valve - contact your local office for more details. 5 4 eatures of io-hem Valve Pinch Valves ontoured ody io-hem Valve Pinch Valves incorporate a contoured body which is designed to meet the market demand for better looking and easier to use valves. The contoured body features a smooth profile and enhanced aesthetics with features that benefit not only instrument designers but also the system end-user. hoice of de-energized state io-hem Valve Pinch Valves are supplied in the following standard configurations: 2-way normally closed 2-way normally open 3-way (where one tube, or set of tubes, is normally open and the other normally closed. When the valve is energized the operation is reversed so the normally open tube is closed and the normally closed tube is opened) ual tubing configurations (i.e. two tubes being operated simultaneously) are offered for smaller tubing sizes. Tubing securely seated Molded grooves hold the tubing securely in the proper position. The gap between the valve plunger and the valve s anvil is slightly smaller than the tubing s outer diameter. Low power consumption The pinch valves efficient construction permits the use of low wattage solenoid coils, ranging from 2.8 Watt for 075-series valves to 8.1 Watt for 100-series valves, which in turn minimizes heat generation. oth power usage and heat generation can be lowered further by stepping down the voltage after actuation by using a oolube Hit and Hold circuit (refer to page 14 for more details).

6 5 Pinch Valve pplications Prevention of shear in sensitive materials Pinch Valves are typically used in on-off applications; applications that don t require flow control or modulation you just want to start and stop the flow. omplex flow path through conventional valve onventional on-off valves often require the fluid to be regulated to move through a convoluted / complex flow path, even when fully open. This can be an issue for biological materials (proteins, N, etc) which can be easily sheared when forced through complicated paths. Pinch Valves offer line-of-sight flow paths where the open tube, even if slightly pinched does not significantly block the flow path. ecause of the slight venturi effect produced by the pinch, flow through the tubing can actually be enhanced rather than restricted. Handling of non-liquid effluents Pinch Valves are often used on the waste side of instrumentation, dumping solutions to a collection device or simply out of the instrument. The waste stream can have many components; liquid, particulates, precipitates and coagulations inadvertently formed from mixtures of chemicals. These accumulated non-liquids can lead to coating on the inner surface of a conventional valve. The coating process is uneven and can eventually lead to the valve becoming clogged. Pinch Valves offer a three-fold solution to this problem: 1. The tubing can be pre-treated to prevent the build-up of films. io-hem Valve silicone tubing is Platinum cured which significantly reduces the possibility of film build-up. 2. The tubing is subjected to a very hard squeeze when the valve is closed. This squeeze is particularly effective in removing any film build-up 3. If the tubing does become blocked it can quickly and easily be replaced without having to remove the valve from service. ustomized Solutions We understand that many applications require customized solutions. The noise level of the 3-way valves is inherently attenuated by the tubing which dampens the motion in both directions. 2. Mounting holes (suffix = M ). Threaded holes situated on the bottom of the valve body. Refer to installation drawing (page 8) for details and dimensions. The mounting holes cannot be used in combination with the manual override button. 3. Position feedback sensor (suffix = ). The feedback sensor provides secondary, independent confirmation of the plunger position (more details on page 14). The feedback option is available for: a. 075P2N 2-way normally closed valves b. 075P3 3-way valves 4. actory-installed mounting flange (suffix = L ). The mounting flanges are available for all 075P pinch valve configurations. They will be installed at a 90º angle to the tubing with the orientation to the outside of the bulkhead. This mounting flange can be purchased as a stand-alone item under part number MU-075 (more details on page 16).. Hit and Hold voltage reduction Within 100 ms of valve actuation, the voltage required to hold the valve in position can be reduced. The voltage step-down results in the dual benefits of power conservation and heat reduction. The amount of the voltage reduction possible is 66% (i.e. 24 Vdc to 8 Vdc or 12 Vdc to 4 Vdc) for all 075P pinch valves that do not incorporate the quiet feature. This results in a power usage reduction of 89%, resulting in a correspondingly large drop in heat generation. or the 075P pinch valves with the quiet feature, voltage can be reduced by 50% (i.e. 24 Vdc to 12 Vdc and 12 Vdc to 6 Vdc) after 100 ms for a power usage drop of 75%. This voltage reduction can be accomplished using the io-hem luidics oolube hit-and-hold circuit (more details on page 14). 23 3 Why choose an Isolation Valve? Maximum inertness The use of high performance plastics and polymers such as PT, PK and KM ensures that the liquid being handled by the valve is always in a highly inert environment. There is no contact with any metallic surfaces within the valve. ast response times Switching time from port-to-port is generally less than 20ms across the range of Isolation Valves. Small footprint io-hem luidics Isolation Valves are specifically designed to be fitted in tight spaces within instruments. The largest valve diameter is 1.25 and longest overall length is less than 3. Minimal dead volume Small overall size also helps keep the internal volumes minimized. The valves are machined precisely to ensure that they have very low internal volumes (refer to specific product pages for details). pplications Precise, repeatable dispensing of reagents Normally closed Isolation valve Inert Gas Reagent bottle ispense ustom cap Maintaining a repeatable dispense of aggressive (and often very expensive) reagents into an analytical instrument can be problematic with conventional pumping equipment. Some forward thinking instrument designers have abandoned the concept of using a pump and have instead turned to using a io-hem luidics Isolation Valve. In such applications, a standard 2-way normally closed isolation valve is connected to a dip tube, which is inserted into the bottom of a reagent bottle. Low pressure nitrogen (or other appropriate inert gas) is introduced separately to blanket the volume above the liquid in the reagent bottle. The pressure inside the bottle (maintained precisely at a calibrated low value) is sufficient to force the reagent liquid up the dip tube. Under normal conditions, the valve is not energized and remains closed so there is no flow. When the valve is energized the diaphragm opens and flow through the valve is established. The isolation valve now becomes a very repeatable fluid dispenser - the amount of liquid dispensed is dependent only on the time the valve is open. spirate and ispense ( sip and spit ) Sometimes the volume of liquid to be dispensed needs to be either a) very small, b) extremely precise or c) both. In these situations it is very common to use a precision machined syringe to control the dispense volume. io-hem luidics 3-way isolation valves are commonly used as the link between the liquid reservoir, the syringe and the instrument. 3-way valve has three ports; normally open (NO in illustration), normally closed (N) and common (om). The common port is connected to the syringe. When the plunger is withdrawn, the valve is not energized and the flow is between the reservoir and the syringe via the NO port (aspiration or sip ). When the syringe is pushed in, the valve is simultaneously energized. 31 11 manifold mounting The io-hem Valve Isolation Valves described elsewhere in this brochure are supplied with threaded ports making them suitable for installation with standard 1/4-28 UN fittings and flexible tubing. However it is common within modern analytical instruments to use manifolds instead of tubing and multiple fittings. ustom manifolds save space and eliminate complicated plumbing inside instruments. To meet this demand, io-hem luidics offers both normally closed and normally open isolation valves with a manifold mounting option. Typically, manifold mounted valves have a threaded collar that attaches the valve to the manifold. locating pin ensures the correct orientation and an elastomer gasket seals the flow path. ontact your local io-hem luidics office for more information and complete manifold interface details. oolube hit and hold circuit The io-hem luidics oolube Hit and Hold circuit has been used very successfully with the full range of Isolation Valves to reduce opening times. The oolube provides the ability to use a temporary higher voltage hit at the start of the energizing cycle. This over-voltage can significantly reduce the valve opening time - depending on the conditions and voltage applied the opening time can be reduced by 50% or more. oolube fter 100ms the oolube automatically reverts to the normal voltage acting as a fuse to protect the circuitry of the valve. Micro-Pump is a solenoid operated device designed to provide a precise, repeatable and discrete dispensed volume of fluid. The luid outlet heck valve element Spring Solenoid heck valve element iaphragm luid inlet flow path is isolated from the operating mechanism by a flexible diaphragm. When the solenoid is energized, the diaphragm is retracted creating a partial vacuum within the pump body. This pulls liquid through the inlet check valve () and simultaneously closes the outlet check valve (). When the solenoid is de-energized a spring pushes the diaphragm down, expelling a discrete volume of liquid through check valve while simultaneously closing check valve. Micro-Pumps require a complete on-off cycle for each discrete dispense. Repeatedly cycling the solenoid creates a pulsed flow (refer to ccurate discrete dispense volumes in next column). eatures of the io-hem Valve Micro-Pump Inert materials Our pumps provide a non-metallic inert fluid path for the dispensing of high purity or aggressive fluids. There is a range of different materials available for all the wetted parts of the pumps - body, diaphragm and check valve. They are suitable for up to 20 million actuations, corresponding to nearly 3,000 hours of continuous use at a 2 Hz cycle rate. ccurate discrete dispense volumes ispense volumes range from 20µl to 250µl per cycle. The pumps can be cycled at up to 2 Hz for the smallest version and 1.6 Hz for the largest. Pumps can be operated at less than the maximum cycle rate by increasing the length of the off time. The on time should remain unchanged to retain dispense accuracy.

36 4 Micro-Pump pplications Waste effluent removal Many types of analytical instruments incorporate a waste sump or container that collects any liquids that may have leaked inside the instrument. These waste streams can have Level control many constituents and could be regarded as a biohazard if allowed to collect in the bottom of the instrument. The pumps are capable of pumping highly aggressive chemical reagents from a remote location (outside of the instrument) and accurately dispense predetermined volumes of the reagents directly into the main liquid stream. This eliminates the need for an intermediate mixing step inside the instrument. This safe and cost effective method of pumping high purity liquids has proved very successful.

46 14 MIRO-PUMP TH TIPS OPRTING PRMTRS & INSTLLTION TIPS Output volume and accuracy: number of factors influence the output volume of our pumps. In our factory the pump s setpoint is determined using the following test conditions: luid: e-ionized water at 70 /21 ittings: Omni-Lok 1/4-28 inverted cone fittings for the 120SP and 130SP pump families and 5/16-24 inverted cone fittings for the 150SP pumps (see page 13). Tubing: PT tubing with the following dimensions: 120SP and 130SP pump families: Internal diameter of 1/32, 3 /8cm tubing length 14 /35cm. 150SP pumps: Internal diameter of 1/8 on the inlet and 1/16 on the outlet, 3 /8cm tubing length 10 /25cm Pressure: Negligible pressure on both the inlet and outlet ports. ycle rates: 120SP & 130SP pump families: 250ms on / 350ms off 150SP pump family: 250ms on / 750ms off No air or gas bubbles in the line once the priming process is complete. (See the Priming section on right) If your application parameters deviate significantly from the above, you may experience dispense rates that are different from the setpoint. In that case, please contact io-hem luidics to discuss your application and we will make appropriate adjustments for you. Pressure limits: lthough Micro-Pumps are capable of producing outlet pressures of up to 5 psi (0.35 bar) while a dispense is taking place, for optimal dispense accuracy, the pressure on both the inlet and the outlet side of the pump should be kept between ± 0.5 psi (0.035 bar), equivalent to a head of ± 12 (300mm) water. uring the pump s up-stroke, suction is created on the inlet. Positive pressure is generated at the outlet during the down-stroke. When the pump is not actuated, it will shut-off flow as long as the pressure on the inlet does not exceed the maximum holding pressure. To ensure correct operation, pressure on the inlet side should never exceed 2 psi (0.14 bar) even when the pump is in the closed position. The check valves in the pump prevent fluid from flowing against the intended flow direction. Orientation: Pumps should be installed with the solenoid portion of the pump pointing upwards, downwards or in a horizontal position with the outlet on top. This ensures that any air in the system will be evacuated quickly and also minimizes the effects of a pressure head acting to keep the check elements open when they should be closed. Outlet Inlet Preferred mounting positions Lead Wires: s a standard all lead wires are PT coated. Lead wires are provided with stripped ends for easy wiring into your control system - refer to drawings on product pages for more details. ifferent lengths and terminal connectors can be provided - refer to customization notes below. Priming: Micro-Pumps must be fully primed prior to operation to ensure that all air is removed from the pump cavity. Priming is achieved by cycling the pump until no air bubbles are seen in the dispense. This normally takes seconds. xcessive air bubbles in the dispense are generally caused by air leaks due to loose fittings - check all the fittings in the system and tighten accordingly. ustomized Solutions We understand that many applications require customized solutions. The io-hem luidics lectric Rotary Valve is a stepper motor operated device used in sample collection, loop injection or flow path selection applications. It is designed to provide an inert flow path for aggressive and/or reactive fluids. The inert path is achieved by aligning holes in a PT rotor with holes in the PT valve body (stator). The rotor is pressed into the valve body creating a tight interference fit seal. The rotor is turned by a close-coupled two-phase hybrid stepper motor. n optoelectronic position sensor inside the valve provides the position of the rotor to a controller P. The P makes fine adjustments as necessary to provide an uninterrupted path. The end-user can program the valve controller to perform desired position sequences - the rotor can move clockwise or counterclockwise to the desired port position. When a oolube is connected between a solenoid valve and a power supply, it delivers a pulse width modulated (PWM) step-down function. It accepts a range of inputs from 12 to 36 V and passes the input on to energize the solenoid valve with full power for 100ms. fter 100ms, the oolube drops the voltage and current to a level sufficient to hold the solenoid in the energized position. The benefits are less power consumption and lower heat generation. The oolube can remain under power indefinitely without being damaged. When the power to the oolube is cut, the valve is turned off immediately, as though the oolube was not in the system. Overdrive unction 0.75 [19.1mm] The oolube enables an overdrive voltage to be placed on a solenoid valve. This means that a solenoid valve rated for 12 V or 24 V can be energized with a voltage as high as 36 V. Since the oolube automatically drops the voltage after 100ms, the solenoid will not be impaired in any way.
