TESTING THE XS650 ALTERNATOR ROTOR The XS650 Alternator Rotor is an electro magnet and is basically a continuous coil of wire with each end attached to the rotors insulated copper slip rings. To Test: Both slip rings must be clean A. Use an Ohm meter set on R x 1 to check the rotors resistance from one slip ring to another. We recommend removing the brushes when you check. Resistance should be 5-7 Ohms. B. With the ohmmeter set on a Kilo-Ohms scale measure the resistance between each slip ring and the rotor core ( crank end to slip ring ) This must show infinite resistance. If the resistance measurements are out of range then the windings are shorted to each other, shorted to the core or broken and the rotor must be replaced. We recommend you check other related charging system components and connections before installing any replacement parts. 28
