Upgrade to next gen filtration technology via XLR Meet the Donaldson XLR, the next generation in gas turbine air inlet filtration! It s a substantially smaller inlet filtration system that uses our most advanced filter technology, PowerCore. XLR provides turbine makers with highly efficient filtration in a smaller, more manageable package than either our benchmark GDX or competitive systems. The key to this size reduction is PowerCore media technology. Because PowerCore is high-density filter media, it enables reduction of the size of the entire filter system, as well as reducing the complexity of the installation, shortening field installation time, and significantly reducing the cost of shipping the components to site. PowerCore allows for twice the airflow per filter at the same initial pressure loss and filtration efficiency as our GDX, the current industry standard in self-cleaning filter systems. Donaldson XLR reduces the three-dimensional footprint of the filter unit by up to 40% with no loss in filtration efficiency. This means shipping on fewer trucks (30 to 60%, depending on system size) and faster field installation. Flexible design means high performance, improved economy The XLR filter system offers increased application flexibility depending upon the needs of the turbine user. Base load power generation, Peak Power generation, or Oil and Gas Mechanical Drive, the mode of operation and filtration needs of the end user can vary greatly. XLR offers the added benefit of flexible design for standard or high performance. Standard performance - economy: The XLR system is employed with standard performance and minimal unit size to offer the most economical system on the market. High performance: The high airflow rating on the XLR filter allows the system to be sized for optimal turbine performance. The high performance application provides for a self-cleaning filter system with long filter life, low inlet pressure loss for maximum turbine output and an improved turbine heat rate. The incoming dirty air is cleaned by pairs of these PowerCore filters in an outside-to-inside airflow path. Airflow through the XLR is horizontal, and filter elements are mounted horizontally against a vertical tube sheet plenum. XLR PowerCore filters are made with NO METAL, so they are incinerable after use. XLR PowerCore elements are available with either Donaldson Duratek or Synthetic base media. Both include Donaldson Spider-Web nanofiber technology.

3 nlet Filter System UniMod single-sided inlet XLR with a single-face intake area utilizes the Donaldson UniMod design. The walkways are attached to the filter modules at the factory and shipped intact. UniMod means faster and less complicated field assembly, on site assembly with 40% fewer field connections. Dual inlet plug & play The XLR dual inlet ( back to back ) configuration for industrial sized turbines integrates the turbine intake with the turbine enclosure. A dual inlet XLR is shipped to site as a single piece, fully shop-assembled unit, with all filters and electrical controls installed -- a true plug and play design. This design serves industrial turbines with airflows to 260,000 ft 3 /min. / 7,300 m 3 /min. Self-cleaning = long life filter The combination of Donaldson s proprietary pulse jet self-cleaning system in the XLR and our exclusive, patented Spider-Web filter media in the filter elements results in long filter life. The Spider-Web nanofiber media technology creates a high efficiency barrier to airborne dust and particulate while keeping it from penetrating into the depth of the filter. By creating a dust cake on the surface of the filter media, the Spider-Web nanofiber barrier enhances the performance of the pulse jet cleaning and extends filter life, while offering high initial filtration efficiency. Filter cleaning is accomplished in the same manner as our current GDX: a strong reverse pulse-jet of air is automatically initiated when the pressure loss through the system exceeds a preset limit (per the conditions of the environment). The filters are then cleaned on a cycle from top to bottom until the system pressure loss returns below the automatic set point. The ejected dust settles to a collection hopper at the bottom of the unit for dust evacuation. And because the pulse cleaning operation keeps system pressure loss consistently low, the turbine can run at peak efficiency to maximize power output. Reduced maintenance, better turbine availability The Donaldson XLR has 50% fewer filter elements than traditional cartridge filter systems. This means reductions in both transport cost and change-out time. The metal-free filter construction provides for easy and cost effective disposal of used filter elements. Long filter life, self-cleaning performance, and reduced change-out time result in better turbine availability. Furthermore, the high filtration efficiency of the Spider-Web media has proven to reduce compressor fouling and extend the interval between turbine cleaning, which leads to improved up time and better turbine production. Redesigned pulse system XLR valves have been completely redesigned to have a stronger pulse to more effectively clean both elements in the pair. Filter element supports and blowpipes are supported and fastened on the dirty air side. This means there s no chance of loose hardware or weld spatter on the clean air side of the filters. At the open end of the blowpipes, a proprietary new nozzle has been engineered to distribute the pulse of air across the entire face of the elements, at almost 3 times the pressure of the GDX nozzle!

4 Single-side servicing The way valves are mounted in the manifold is such that the operator can perform all valve/manifold service from the walkway on the filter side. Each valve is held in by only 4 bolts that are easily accessible as an operator faces the filters. This is advantageous for the end-user at service time! The new valve also has a quick release to service the solenoid, for faster and easier servicing. PowerCore: highly efficient filter media Currently used in diesel engine applications Donaldson is a global supplier of filtration technology for trucks and off-highway equipment PowerCore media allows twice the airflow per filter at the same initial pressure loss, and filtration efficiency comparable to our GDX self-cleaning filter system. Media similar to PowerCore has been offered by Donaldson in the past in an aftermarket replacement panel filter, but XLR is the first application of it as an OEM product. PowerCore is a high-density corrugated media technology, in this case, packaged in a V-shape. The high density of the media pack, as compared to a pleated sheet of media, allows for more filter media to be packaged into a given volume. This denser construction has the ability to reduce pressure losses due to the flow path direction changes of air through a filter. The fluted configuration is made by layering alternate rows of flat sheet and corrugated filter media. The result is a dense honeycomb-like structure consisting of parallel rows of flutes that are sealed at alternating ends. (See illustration) In the airstream, the air is allowed to enter half of the flute chambers on the upstream side of the media pack, but blocked from exiting those flute chambers on the downstream side. Because of the permeable nature of filter media, the airflow passes through the media fibers and gets cleaned. Once in the adjacent chamber, it exits on the open downstream end. Airflow path is straighter than it is through conventional pleated media; in fact, turns have been reduced by 25% in the XLR. The result is low pressure loss. Initial pressure loss through the media pack is dependent on two factors: (1) the entering and exiting losses of air as it enters the flute chambers, and (2) the restriction of the air as it passes through the walls of the chamber. XLR filters can handle more air flow at the same initial pressure loss than typical cylindrical filters.

5 Inlet Filter System Spider-Web Spider-Web is Donaldson s patented filter media treatment a nanofiber web of sub-micron-diameter fibers bonded to a filter media substrate (either purely synthetic or our natural/synthetic blend, Duratek). This fine web increases filter efficiency, especially on very small corrosive particulate, and enhances particle release during pulse cleaning. In this photo from the scanning electron 2500X magnification we see the larger fibers of the substrate under the web of nanofibers. All XLR PowerCore filters use Spider-Web. Moisture removal Choose marine louvers or inlet hoods for moisture removal. In the Donaldson XLR inlet system, the filters are protected from direct exposure to rain and sun with an enclosed access area (walkway) on the dirty air side. Incoming air is pre-treated with either (A) weather louvers or (B) weather protection hoods with optional inertial moisture separators. A B
