1 ALTERNATOR REPAIR FOR BMW 645 CI. E64 ENGINE N62 BY KEVIN BOWEN 6/9/2013 Level of difficulty: If you follow these directions, moderate, hardest part is aligning the alternator back for repositioning. Length of Time: 2 2-1/2 hours. May be quicker, I took a lot of pictures. Step 1 Disconnect the negative terminal from your battery, coated in the trunk, Step 2. Un-clip hood release cable from radiator cover.remove this radiator cover. There are six horizontal and four horizontal torx bolts that you have to remove. Two of the horizontal one s are a little tough to get to, so put a rag underneath your ratchet before you remove them. This is what it looks like removed. Notice you do not have to remove the two large two large torx bolts Step 3 Remove this carrier piece. It s help on with five torx screws. This is what it looks like removed Step 3 Disconnect electric connector to electric cooling fan on left as you stand in front of the car facing the windshield.

2 Step 4. Raise the fan assembly about an inch. There is a folding plastic tab on the right side of the fan housing. Right side as you stand in front of the car facing the windshield. Fold the tab 90 degrees counter clockwise. Push it away from you until it becomes parallel to front fender. This is the tab position when fan is in car This is it after you have rotated it. Step 5. Remove fan assembly the rest of the way. Step 6. Draw a diagram of serpentine belt routing. Remove serpentine belt by removing plastic cover on tension pulley. Use 16mm socket in tighten mode on dummy nut. Push hard and belt will loosen.

3 Step 7. Remove two bolts holding alternator in place, and pull alternator towards you. Levering with a screw driver helps. Step 8. Cover the radiator with cardboard to protect the delicate aluminum fins. Then rotate alternator to expose the back of it. Unclip the electrical connector, then remove the nut holding on the positive cable to the alternator. Ensure you make note of the position of the positive connector s position before you remove it. I put in on incorrectly and it wreaked havoc on me trying to position the alternator back into position before I figured out what was going on. Step 9. Carefully remove the alternator. I bought my car in May of 2012 with 38,000 miles on it and this alternator is a BMW remanufactured one. Wow, what crap. Step 10. Remove three 8mm screws and remove black plastic cover from back of alternator.

4 place. Here is the voltage regulator exposed. Remove three 7mm bolts holding it in Here the new regulator. Once in place remove the grey plastic retaining piece this allows the brushes to release against the copper communicator (SP). Polish the communicator first with a little fine sand paper. Step 11. I removed the lower engine cover, to make it easier to align the alternator. The cover is held in place with several blue quick release screws. I found it easier to slide the long lower alternator bolt in first while I was under the car. Step 12. Just reverse the rest of the procedures. Once the alternator is back in the rest is very easy. Don t forget to re-attach battery cable and connectors to the fan. Also don t forget to fold the plastic tab back on the fan housing.
