5 Safety and Precautions for LFU Series For safety instructions, read page front matter 41 in the Best Pneumatics Book 7 Version 5. Design/Selection 1. Confirm the specifications. Give careful consideration to operating conditions such as the application, fluid and environment. 2. For stable measurements, the fluids should not contain air bubbles. Excludes fluids which do not transit ultrasonic waves (such as fluids that contain a large amount of air bubbles). 3. The flow rate is equivalent to deionized water (pure water). 4. For good performance, the fluid path must contain fluid. To allow air bubbles to be removed easily, it is recommended that the transducer outlet port be installed upward (higher than the inlet port). 5. Since static electricity may be generated, implement suitable countermeasures. 6. Use caution as permeation may occur. The permeated fluid may affect the parts of other materials. 7. Operate only within the specified voltage. Applying voltage above the specified voltage range can cause not only a malfunction and damage to the product, but may also cause electrical shock and a thermal event. 8. Do not exceed the maximum allowable load specification on the output(s) of the controller. A load exceeding the maximum load specification can cause damage to the product. 9. Do not use a load that generates a surge voltage. Although the circuit at the output side of the switch is surge-protected, damage may still occur if a voltage surge is applied repeatedly. When a load which generates a surge, such as from a relay or solenoid valve, is directly driven, use a switch with a built-in surge absorbing element. 10. Fluid Operate after confirming the compatibility of the product s component materials with fluids. Operate within the indicated fluid temperature range and fluid pressure. 11. 6 Ensure the necessary space for maintenance and inspections. 12. Monitor the internal voltage drop of the product. When operating below the specified voltage, it is possible that the load may be ineffective even though the product function is normal. Therefore, the formula below should be satisfied after confirming the minimum operating voltage of the load. Supply voltage - Internal voltage drop of product > Minimum operating voltage of load 13. Design the system so that the fluid always fills the detection passage (transducer). 14. Ambient environment Operate within the ambient operating temperature range. After confirming the compatibility of the product s component materials with the ambient environment, operate so that fluid does not adhere to the product s exterior surfaces. 15. Countermeasures for static electricity. Since static electricity may be generated depending on the fluid being used, implement suitable countermeasures. 16. Do not operate in locations having an atmosphere of corrosive gases, chemicals, sea water, or where there will be contact with the same. 17. For best performance, install fluid flow control valve or flow control regulator on the outlet side of the transducer. Mounting 1. Monitor the flow direction of the fluid. Install and connect piping so that fluid flows in the direction of the arrow indicated on the product. 2. Do not drop or bump. Do not drop, bump, or apply excessive impacts while handling. The product could be damaged and cause a malfunction. 3. Never mount a product in a place that will be used as a step stool during piping. 4. Hold the body of the product when handling. The tensile strength of the cord is 15N and applying a greater pulling force than this can cause a malfunction. When handling, hold the body of the product. 5. Do not operate unit until you can verify that equipment will operate properly. Following mounting, repair, or retrofit, verify correct mounting by conducting suitable function and leakage tests after piping and power connections have been made. 6. 7 7. Product mounting direction For good performance, the fluid path must contain fluid. To allow air bubbles to be removed easily, it is recommended that the transducer outlet port be installed upward (higher than the inlet port). 8. Mounting controller Consider proper cooling of ambient temperature of controller to keep within range of operating temperature. Mount controller to avoid interference of equipment. Provide sufficient space for wire routing to controller. Avoid mounting location were wires will provide excessive force on controller connectors due to bending and twisting. Strain relief for wiring is recommended. Caution Piping 1. Preparation before piping Before piping is connected, it should be thoroughly blown out with air (flushing) or washed to remove chips, cutting oil and other debris from inside the pipe. Install piping so that it does not apply pulling, pressing, bending or other forces on the body. 2. Tighten the fitting nut until it reaches the prescribed position on the body (end face). As a guide, refer to the proper tightening torques shown below. Nut tightening torque for piping Torque(N m) Body class LQ1 LQ ~ ~ ~ ~ When installing tubing, please grab and hold part of fitting when you assemble a nut. Wiring Caution 1. Verify the color and the terminal number when wiring. Incorrect wiring can cause the product to be damaged and malfunction. 2. Avoid repeatedly bending or stretching of the lead wire. Repeatedly applying bending stress or stretching force to the lead wire will cause it to break. IN18796_LFU 7 Rev 0

8 3. Confirm proper insulation of wiring. Make sure that there is no faulty wiring insulation (contact with other circuits, ground fault, improper insulation between terminals, etc.). Damage may occur due to excess current flow. 4. Do not wire in conjunction with power lines or high voltage lines. Wire controller lines separately from power lines and high voltage lines. Avoid placing power lines and high voltage lines in the same conduit with the controller lines. The controller circuits may malfunction due to electrical noise. 5. Do not allow a load to short circuit. 6. Do not remove/insert connector while power is applied to the controller. 7. For best performance, shielded cable should be used for the transducer wires. Attach the shield ground to the controller. 8. Avoid mounting location were wires will provide excessive force on controller connectors due to bending and twisting. Strain relief for wiring is recommended. Usage 1. When using a product for high temperature fluid, the product itself also becomes hot due to the high temperature fluid. Avoid touching the product directly as this may cause a burn. Caution 1. Since the transducer is packaged in a clean room, use sufficient care in handling when opened. 2. After long periods of nonuse, perform a test run before beginning regular operation. 3. If unit is stored for a long time after use, please remove residual liquid, flush and dry out the inside of the parts completely in order to avoid adherence of liquid. Operating Environment 1. Do not use in locations where vibration or impact occurs. 2. Do not use in an area where surges are generated. IN18796_LFU 8 Rev 0

9 When there are units that generate a large amount of electrical surge in the area around a product, (e.g., solenoid type lifters, high frequency induction furnaces, motors, etc.) this may cause deterioration or damage to the product s internal circuitry. Avoid sources of surge generation and crossed lines. 3. The product is not equipped with surge protection against lightning. Lightning surge protection measures should be applied directly to the system components as necessary. 4. Do not use in locations where radiated heat will be received from nearby heat sources. 5. The product does not have an explosion proof rating. Never use in the presence of an explosive gas as this may cause a serious explosion. 6. Do not operate in locations having an atmosphere of corrosive gases, chemicals, sea water, or where there will be contact with the same. Maintenance 1. Perform periodical inspections to ensure proper operation of the product. Unexpected malfunctions may cause a possible danger. 2. Take precautions when using the product for an interlock circuit. When a product is used for the interlock circuit, use a multiple interlock system to prevent trouble or malfunction, and verify the operation of the product and interlock function on a regular basis. 3. Before removing equipment, shut off the power supplies, and exhaust fluids from the system. Further, when restarting equipment after remounting or replacement, first confirm safety and then check the equipment for normal operation. 4. Do not disassemble the product. Products which have been disassembled cannot be guaranteed. If disassembly is necessary, contact SMC. 5. In order to obtain optimum performance from products, perform periodic inspections to confirm that there are no leaks from fittings, etc. IN18796_LFU 9 Rev 0
