2 Vehicle Cradle Installation Guide Before You Begin The T7000 VMT10 Vehicle Cradle mounts inside a vehicle, is rugged, durable, and withstands harsh user environments. Specialty vehicle installations may use different mounting equipment. 3 General Guidelines Install the vehicle cradle in a non-obstructive, safe location within the vehicle cab. Avoid obstructing the following: Vehicle operation Visibility through windows Safe entry or exit Safety devices such as air bags Firmly secure the cradle to stay in place despite vibrations, shocks, bumps, or vehicle accidents. Do not use this or any computer system while operating a motor vehicle. Installing the Mounting Base or Ball You must install the mounting base (ball) in the vehicle before any of the other parts. To install the mounting base (ball) 1. In the vehicle, find a strong metal surface with structural integrity that is accessible from both the front and the back, such as the floor. 2. Using the base hole pattern as a guide and the actual base as a template, drill holes into a secure surface inside the vehicle cab. 3. Insert #10 mounting bolts through the base, then through the holes in the metal surface. Do not use sheet metal screws. 4. On the back, tighten matching fender washers and nuts onto each #10 bolt. Using a Drill Base installation MobileDemand will order you a Drill base that will allow you mount a Drill Base to holes that you drill into your vehicle. 1. 4 2. The bottom of the base shown here is drilled down to the vehicle. 3. The ball on the back of the VMT would mount onto the end of the swivel arm. Shown above at the top of the picture. Using a No Drill Base installation MobileDemand will order you a No Drill base that will allow you to use existing mounting holes in your vehicle. 1. Here is an example of a No Drill Base for a vehicle. 2. This base would be mounted under the seat, requiring you to remove the seat, install this base bracket, and installing the seat on top of the base. 3. After this, the Arm and swivel would be installed next. 4. The bottom of the base shown in step 3 is attached to the No Drill Base. 5. 5 Attaching the Vehicle Cradle Perform the following instructions to attach the VMT10 Vehicle Cradle to the mounting base (ball) or Drill Base Arm, or No Drill Base Arm using a mounting arm. To attach the vehicle cradle to the mounting base (ball) 1. On the mounting arm, turn the knob a few times to open its end wide enough for the mounting base (ball). 2. With its spring facing up, install the mounting arm onto the mounting base (ball) with its knob on the side. 3. Insert the cradle base into the top end of the mounting arm with the cradle upright. 4. Tighten the mounting arm knob with ample force. 6 General Guidelines These instructions are for connecting the vehicle s power system to the vehicle cradle. There are two options to connect your vehicle cradle to your vehicle power system: Auxiliary power cable to vehicle cigarette lighter socket Direct connection to vehicle power system Route the power cable so it does not interfere with the driver and the cable does not harm or interfere with other equipment. Avoid routing the cable where it can get pinched, scraped, stepped on, or overheated. Avoid exposing the power cable to moisture. Only wire this system into vehicles with volt DC (nominal) electrical output. If the power cable must pass through a firewall, drill a 9/16 hole in the firewall and install a nylon bushing (not included). CAUTION: Do not defeat or bypass the inline fuse. Doing so may endanger or cause damage to your vehicle, vehicle cradle, or xtablet T7000. Note: MobileDemand does not warrant existing connector installations. Note: MobileDemand does not assume liability for any damages resulting from improper installations, installations to existing connectors, or disregard for the instructions in this installation guide. 7 Installing the Direct Vehicle Wiring Have all of the WIRE-KIT10 parts and the tools specified on page 2 ready before you perform the following instructions. To install the direct vehicle wiring 1. Disconnect the vehicle battery. 2. Route the main power cable from the vehicle fuse panel to the vehicle cradle. 3. Secure the cable every 18 with wire ties - do not pinch or abrade. Note: In steps 3 and 4, replace the #10 ring terminal with a ¼ ring terminal where needed. 5. Secure the black wire cable to the negative (ground) location in the vehicle fuse panel. 6. Secure the red wire cable to a constantly active 12V (nominal) power terminal in the fuse block - not a terminal powered using a vehicle ignition key. 7. Attach the white connectors between the main power cable and the fused auto adapter assembly. Seat the connection firmly to engage the connector locks (tabs). 8. Reconnect the vehicle battery. 9. Tighten the threaded connector to fasten the fused auto adapter assembly onto the connector on the back of the vehicle cradle housing. 10. Loop and secure the cabling with tie wrap. Installing the Auxiliary Power Cable (Optional) You could use the auxiliary power cable at initial setup or temporarily as a backup if there are problems with the fuse panel. It is recommended that you store the auxiliary power cable in the vehicle in which the vehicle cradle is installed. To install the auxiliary power cable 1. Attach the white connectors between the auxiliary power cable and the fused auto adapter assembly. Seat the connection firmly to engage the connector locks (tabs). 2. Insert the cigarette lighter plug into the cigarette lighter socket in the vehicle. T7000 Vehicle Wiring Kit Installation Guide Page 7

8 3. Tighten the threaded connector to fasten the fused auto adapter assembly onto the back of the vehicle cradle housing. Note: The plug contains a 12-Amp fuse. When you need to replace this fuse, unscrew the tip of the plug, remove the fuse from the plug, then carefully insert the spare fuse keep its spring intact. Verifying Connections Perform the following instructions to verify your connections. To verify your connections 1. Route any power, serial, or USB cords and secure these with a short loop using wire ties. 2. Route the wire ties through the holes in the VMT10 Vehicle Cradle bracket. 3. With screws, secure any serial cables, such as from a printer, to the connector on the back of the VMT10 Vehicle Cradle. CAUTION: Do not use this computer system while operating a motor vehicle. WARNING: Use of this system while operating a motor vehicle or heavy equipment may be distracting, dangerous, and prohibited based on your location. WARNING: Failure to pay attention to operating the vehicle may cause an accident resulting in serious bodily injury and property damage. T7000 Vehicle Wiring Kit Installation Guide Page 8

9 Installing the DC Power Jack (Optional) You can use this cable temporarily as a backup if there are problems with the vehicle cradle. However, this will require that you plug any peripheral device (such as a printer) directly into the xtablet T7000. It is recommended that you store the DC power jack in the vehicle in which the vehicle cradle is installed. To install the DC Power Jack 1. Loosen the ¼ turn connector from the auto adapter connected to the back of the vehicle cradle. 2. Connect the ¼ turn connector from the auto adapter to the mating connector on the DC power jack adapter. 3. Connect the DC power jack connector to the connector on the lower left side of the xtablet T Plug the other end into the Tablet Power connector If you need additional wire length from the Tablet Power Adaptor to the Tablet 1. MobileDemand offers an optional cable that is 6 in length. 2. It connects from the end of the Tablet Power Adaptor connector to a female VMT power connector on the other end. 3. This allows the power adaptor brick to be placed away from the tablet if it has to. For example a fork truck install may want to keep the power adaptor brick concealed away from the hydraulics of the fork truck. 4. The part number of this cable is CBL-EXT-PWR. Vehicle Cradle XMT-VMT10 Vehicle Wiring Kit WIRE-KIT10 Vehicle Cradle XMT-VMT14 Allows for QWERTY KB Option Cigarette Lighter Adapter Option You can use this adapter in place of the 8 ft power cable, either at initial setup or if there is a problem with the 8 ft cable. Note: The plug contains an 8-Amp, 3 AG fuse. To replace this fuse when necessary 1. Unscrew the tip of the plug. 2. Remove the fuse from the plug. 3. Carefully insert the spare fuse be sure to keep its spring intact. DC Jack Adapter Option You can use this adapter to connect power directly to the xtablet T7000 in case of a problem with the vehicle cradle. To use the DC jack adapter 1. Unplug the power connector from the vehicle cradle. 2. Plug the power connector to the mating connector on the DC jack adapter. 3. Plug the other end of the DC jack adapter to the xtablet T7000 unit. Care and Cleaning Clean the surface contacts of the xtablet T7000 every month or as needed if the contacts seem overly tarnished or dirty. Clean the docking surface contacts by using a silver polish or a cleanser wiped with a soft cloth. Clean the gold contact pins of the vehicle cradle using a soft toothbrush to clean between the contact pins. CAUTION: Do not use this computer system while operating a motor vehicle. WARNING: Use of this system while operating a motor vehicle or heavy equipment may be distracting, dangerous, and prohibited based on your location. WARNING: Failure to pay attention to operating the vehicle may cause an accident resulting in serious bodily injury and property damage. Docking the xtablet T7000 into the VMT10 Vehicle Cradle Follow these instructions to ensure your xtablet T7000 rides securely in your vehicle. To dock the xtablet T7000 in a vehicle cradle 1. Position the VMT10 Vehicle Cradle so that it is upright. 2. Place the bottom of the xtablet T7000 into cradle seat, aligning it with the guide posts. 3. Push the top of the xtablet T7000 into the cradle slide latching mechanism on top. 4. With your hands on the top two corners of the xtablet T7000, squeeze the back portion of the sliding latching mechanism into place. T7000 Vehicle Wiring Kit Installation Guide Page 11

12 Ensuring a Secure Latch Follow these instructions to ensure your xtablet T7000 is securely latched in your vehicle. To ensure the xtablet T7000 is securely latched 1. Stand the vehicle cradle upright. 2. Secure the xtablet T7000 firmly into the cradle seat see the Docking procedure above. 3. Slide the cradle slide latch forward as shown in the following picture on the left. This will push the latch down into the slot on the xtablet T Turn the key in the cradle slide latching mechanism to lock in the xtablet T7000. NOTE: If the key does not turn freely the locked position it is likely the moving part of the latch is not to the fully latched position. Verifying Electrical and Communications Connections Perform the following verifications to ensure all connections are working properly. To verify proper communication connections When power is applied to the vehicle cradle, the left LED lights a steady green. When the xtablet T7000 is latched into the cradle, the right LED blinks three times, then lights a steady green. The two green LEDs on the vehicle cradle stay lit until either the xtablet T7000 is removed from the cradle or until power is removed from the vehicle cradle. At the same time, the xtablet T7000 battery charge LEDs (3 rd and 4th from right on the front upper-right corner) lights a steady orange or green. This indicates that the xtablet T7000 is correctly connected to the data and battery charge lines. T7000 Vehicle Wiring Kit Installation Guide Page 12
