NC C NO POWER SUPPLY OVERVIEW This unit is a Va.c Hz off line switched mode power supply which combines the functions of a power supply unit, battery charging unit and battery monitoring unit. It is intended for use with fire alarm systems for powering ancillary circuits. If used with a fire alarm system, we recommend you read BS 5839: Pt 1: 1988 Fire Detection and Alarm Systems for Buildings (Code of Practice for System Design, Installation and Servicing) available at your local reference library or from the BSI. It is designed to supply a maximum of 3A to a load (if a battery is fitted this reduces to 2.5A in order to charge the battery) and is continuously rated. It has the ability to switch the load on and off dependent upon input signals. The unit is internally fault monitored, and any fault can be signalled to other equipment. It has the ability to include battery back up, from 2Ahr to 10Ahr. Isolated input and output signals are available. OUTPUTS These are controlled via a 2 pole changeover relay (RLY2). When this relay is activated the output is triggered. Supply Output (CONN1) - 1st pole of RLY2 0V Output V Output NC Output NO Output F1 NO NC V 0V OUTPUT CONN1 FUSE 3AF D6 Output Fuse Fault LED The PSU has four supply output terminals:- 0V Zero volts V Continuous 24V NC 24V in a non-triggered state, open circuit in a triggered state NO Open circuit in a non-triggered state, 24V in a triggered state The Supply Outputs are protected by a common fuse (F1) and can supply a total maximum of 3A. Isolated Output (CONN5) - 2nd pole of RLY2 NO C NC ISO O/P CONN 5 This isolated set of contacts can switch up to 3A. When in a non-triggered state C is connected to NC, NO is open circuit When in a triggered state C is connected to NO, and NC is open circuit Fault Output (CONN4) NO NC C CONN4 FAULT C NC NO This is an isolated relay output rated at 1A and is configured for fail safe operation, i.e. it is normally energised when there is no fault condition. In this state C is connected to NC and NO is open circuit. In any fault condition (including the complete loss of power), the relay changes state, C is connected to NO and NC becomes open circuit. 24V 3A ANCILLARY POWER SUPPLY INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS APPROVED DOCUMENT No. DFU Rev 1 PAGE 3

INPUTS The PSU has three inputs and one control link:- Local Trig Trig Hold Off CONN2 CONN HOLD TRIG LOCAL OFF TRIG PLK1 HOLD OFF DISABLE EXTERNAL & INTERNAL INDICATORS Three LED indicators are provided on the PSU front:- Local Trig (CONN2) This input is NOT isolated from the PSU and is intended for local control switching. When a short is applied to this input the unit will trigger. Trig (CONN3) This input is an isolated input. When a signal of between 5 and 30V is applied to it the unit will trigger. If any trigger inputs are applied then the PSU will be in an activated state. To be in a non-activated state the two trigger inputs must not be applied and either PLK1 fitted or a valid signal applied to Hold Off Hold Off (CONN3) This input is an isolated input which must be held between 5 and 30V to prevent the unit from triggering. To use this input remove the HOLD OFF DISABLE link (PLK1). If this input is not used ensure PLK1 is fitted. This input can be used for failsafe operation. If Hold Off is not applied and PLK1 is not fitted the unit will be in a triggered state. Normal supply green light on When lit, this indicates the mains supply is healthy. Fault Condition - call engineer When lit, this indicates that a fault has occurred. Normal supply - green light on Fault condition - call Engineer Control relay - activated Control Relay Activated When lit, this indicates the unit is in the triggered state. Three engineer LED indicators are also provided on the main board:- Output Fuse Fault LED Lethal Voltage Present LED Mains is present and voltages of up to 400V are present on the primary (hatched) area of the PCB. Output Fuse Fault LED The output fuse has ruptured. Battery Fault LED. The batteries are low, faulty or the battery fuse has ruptured. Battery Fault LED Lethal Volatge Present LED EARTHING AND CIRCULATING CURRENTS The output of this unit is floating with respect to earth. IMPORTANT: The mains input to the power supply MUST be earthed. If screened cables are used they should be earthed. Consideration should be given to the magnitude of possible fault and leakage currents that may flow in the earthing system, especially in multiple point earthing schemes. The 0V or 24V supply output of this unit should not be connected to other supplies. This could cause large 0V to 0V currents to flow between the units. 24V 3A ANCILLARY POWER SUPPLY INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS APPROVED DOCUMENT No. DFU Rev 1 PAGE 4

OPTIONAL BATTERY BACKUP The PSU has the ability to charge, monitor and supply the load using 2Ahr to 10Ahr sealed lead acid (VRLA) batteries. If batteries are fitted link PLK2 (labelled LINK FOR BATTERY MONITORING ) should be fitted. If the unit is to be used without batteries link PLK2 should be removed to prevent a battery fault condition. If the mains supply fails the batteries will automatically supply the load. The batteries will start to discharge and their terminal voltage will fall. When the battery voltage level drops to 23V the unit will indicate a battery fault. When the battery voltage reaches 22V the unit will disconnect the batteries from the load. The size and capacity of batteries used will depend upon the stand-by-time required by the system. The battery back-up leads should be connected to 2x12V or 4x batteries connected in series and mounted as indicated in the diagrams shown (right). Shorting links are provided in the PSU accessory pack. Fuse F2 protects the battery and circuit from over current faults. If the battery back-up leads are connected the wrong way Fuse F2 will blow. IMPORTANT: Always dispose of used batteries according to the battery manufacturers instructions. Typical Fault Monitor Fault Output NO NC C End of Line Resistor Control Unit If a PSU fault occurs then the fault output will change state giving an open circuit fault to the control unit. The fault output controls the control unit s end of line resistor. INSTALLATION Mains Connection Please note: These guidelines are based on BS 5839: Pt1: 1988 and BS 7671 (Wiring Regulations). Other national standards of installation should be used where pertinent. It is important that mains is brought into the enclosure at the top right hand side as indicated in the diagram (right). The requirement for the mains supply to this equipment is fixed wiring, using three core cable (no less than 0.75mm2 and no more than 2.5mm2) or a suitable three conductor system, fed from an isolating switch fuse spur, fused at 3A. This should be secure from unauthorised operation and be marked DO NOT SWITCH OFF. Correctly terminate the incoming cables as shown in the diagram (right). If required, the 5mm connector block (CONN6) can be pulled from the PCB for ease of installation. Ensure that the incoming mains earth is connected directly to this connector block and NOT to the chassis earth point. (The PSU earth strap must be connected to the chassis earth point before operation). 24V 3A ANCILLARY POWER SUPPLY INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS APPROVED DOCUMENT No. DFU Rev 1 PAGE 6

PSU Location The PSU must be sited internally and must not be subject to conditions likely to affect its performance e.g. damp, saltair, water ingress, extremes of temperature, physical abuse etc. It is recommended that it is sited where it may be maintained easily and that the indicators may be clearly seen. Mounting the Enclosure The PSU is supplied with a hinged plastic lid, a metal back box and two separate PCBs. The relative location of these PCBs is indicated below: PL1 The PSU can be surface or semi-flush mounted (see FITTING THE ENCLOSURE section overleaf). To expose the base mounting holes, the base Power Supply PCB must first be removed. It is also recommended that the hinged lid is removed to prevent accidental damage during the fixing process. To remove the lid: - Take the unit out of its box and undo the two screws on the right hand side of the lid using the allen key provided. Hinge the lid 180 to the left (do not overbend the hinges). Disconnect the lid/base connecting cable (PL1) from the Indicator PCB. Care should be taken when detaching this connector to depress the telecoms-style locking tab to prevent damage (see diagram above). Carefully remove the four M4 retaining nuts which secure the hinges. To remove the base PCB: - Ensure power has been removed from the panel and that the PSU PCB is safe to handle (see IMPORTANT NOTES section on page two). Disconnect the connector cable from the cable clips on the base. Pull the PSU earth strap off the spade connector at the main chassis earth point. Carefully undo the PCB retaining screw located at the bottom left hand side of the PSU PCB using a crosshead screwdriver. Push the PCBs upwards and then pull forwards over the mounting pillars taking care not to damage any of the components. The panel lid and PSU PCB can now be removed from site to prevent accidental damage. Please note: The PSU PCB is static-sensitive and we strongly advise that the following anti-static handling precautions are observed when handling it. Operators should rid themselves of any personal electro-static charge by momentarily touching any of the earth studs on the unit s metal back box with all circuit boards and connections correctly in place. This should be done immediately prior to handling the sensitive components. If not in the vicinity of the back box, any other sound connection to safety earth may be touched. Static sensitive items may now be handled with care. Important: Always handle the PCB by it s sides and store it in a clean, dry place which is free from vibration, dust and excessive heat. Use a suitable antistatic enclosure to guard it against mechanical damage. Decide carefully how the wiring will be brought into the panel with reference to the diagram overleaf and remove the required knock-outs for cable entry. Always ensure if a knock-out is removed, the hole is filled with a good quality cable gland. Any unused knock-outs must be securely blanked off. 24V 3A ANCILLARY POWER SUPPLY INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS APPROVED DOCUMENT No. DFU Rev 1 PAGE 7

Notes on cable terminations and cable selection It is vitally important that the cables are terminated correctly according to the cable manufacturers instructions. Cable glands must be fitted where cables enter the panel. Any holes made but subsequently not used MUST be sealed with a flame retardant gland or other such barrier. Excessive tails should not be left, especially within the power supply. The earth screen of the incoming cables MUST be adequately insulated and connected to the chassis earth point. See MAINS CONNECTION section (page 7) and IMPORTANT NOTES section (page 2) for earthing information) It is essential that the 230Va.c. cable comes into the enclosure via one of the inlets at the top right hand corner of the enclosure. The size and type of cable should be selected to accommodate the current required and the permissible voltage drop in the system. If the unit is to be used in a fire alarm system the consideration should be given to the cable recommendations in BS 5839: Pt1: 1988 Fitting the enclosure Using the four mounting holes, fix the base securely onto/into the wall. The mounting holes are suitable for use with No.8 roundhead or countersunk woodscrews. Assess the condition and construction of the wall and use a suitable screw fixing. Any dust or swarf created during the fixing process must be kept out of the power supply and great care must be taken not to damage any wiring or components. DIAGRAM TO SHOW SEMI-FLUSH MOUNTING OF POWER SUPPLY 60mm includes 'dimples' INTERNAL VIEW OF PSU BACK BOX (WITH PCB REMOVED) SHOWING MOUNTING HOLES, KNOCK-OUTS, EARTHING POINTS AND PCB MOUNTING PILLARS KNOCK-OUTS FOR OTHER CABLES KNOCK-OUTS FOR MAINS SUPPLY IMPORTANT: Incoming mains cable must be segregated from all other cables and should only enter the PSU through either of these two right hand knock outs. Cable glands must be used. MOUNTING HOLE CHASSIS EARTH POINT IMPORTANT: The PSU safety earth strap MUST be connected to this point. MOUNTING HOLE WALL DO NOT drill any additional holes for cable entry in the shaded area highlighed above as this is where the PCBs and back up batteries will be located. Connecting the Unit Connecting the unit s internal connections and PCBs is best undertaken immediately prior to commissioning We strongly recommend that all aspects of the installation are verified and logged by the installer. Re-fit the panel lid and PCB which were previously removed. Re-connect the lid/base connecting cable and ensure that the PCB retaining screw is firmly fastened down. The PCB must be securely fastened before operation. 24V 3A ANCILLARY POWER SUPPLY INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS APPROVED DOCUMENT No. DFU Rev 1 PAGE 8
