TOWER S TIP SHEET BENTLEY JUMP START/TOWING PROCEDURES KEY READER In the event of the remote control key battery becoming fully discharged it will still be possible to start the car using the key reader. Located in the glovebox, the key reader recognises the remote control key and will allow the car to be started as normal. To use the key reader, push the remote control key, with the key blade folded away, into the reader until it clicks into place. This will unlock the steering column. The Engine Start/Stop button will now function in the same manner as described in Engine Start/Stop button on page 2-3. To remove, push the remote control key inwards, the key will eject slightly allowing it to be removed. Replace the remote control key battery as soon as possible, follow the instructions under Replacing a remote control key battery on page If the remote control key is still defective contact an authorised Bentley dealer as soon as possible and have the key checked. Note: It is important to remember that if the valet key function is activated (see page 4-21), and the master remote control key battery is fully discharged, you will still be able to access the glovebox using the key blade. HAZARD WARNING LAMPS The switch for the hazard warning lamps is located on the lower centre console. The hazard warning lamps should be used to draw the attention of other road users to the car in emergencies. The hazard warning lamps do not require the ignition to be switched on to operate. All direction indicator lamps flash simultaneously when the hazard warning lamps are switched on. The direction indicator warning lamps in the driver instrument panel and the warning lamp in the hazard warning switch will flash at the same time. The use of the hazard warning lamps described here is subject to the relevant statutory requirements. WARNING: If the car breaks down, the risk of accident increases. Use the hazard warning lamps and the warning triangle to draw the attention of other road users to the car. Note: The battery will drain if the hazard warning lamps are left on for a long time, even if the ignition is switched off. The hazard warning lamps will not operate when the battery is discharged. 2 EMERGENCY WARNING TRIANGLE (When Fitted) TOOLS LOCATION Fig Warning triangle The emergency warning triangle must be positioned on the road behind the car to give other motorists, driving in the same direction, advance warning of an obstruction. The triangle should be positioned at a minimum distance of 30 metres (100 feet) or approximately 40 paces from the obstruction and be visible to oncoming cars from a distance of 100 metres (330 feet). If a bend or hilltop obscures the view, the distance should be increased When the emergency is over, remember to retrieve the triangle and return it to its storage location. The warning triangle is stored in the luggage compartment lid (see Fig. 14-1). REMOVING THE WARNING TRIANGLE Open the luggage compartment lid. Release the velcro straps and remove the warning triangle from the plastic case. Instructions on how to erect the warning triangle are provided. STORING THE WARNING TRIANGLE Collapse the warning triangle and insert into the plastic case. Insert the warning triangle into the compartment in the luggage compartment lid and attach the velcro straps. Close the luggage compartment lid. Note: Any replacement warning triangles must comply with legal requirements. Replacements are available from an authorised Bentley dealer. Fig Tools location The tools are located beneath the spare wheel, beneath the luggage compartment floor and can be accessed as follows: Fold back the carpet in the luggage compartment and raise the floor panel using the handle. The handle can be hooked over the seal around the luggage compartment lid aperture to aid operation. To access the tool kit, first remove the spare wheel by unscrewing the securing screw. Carefully lift the temporary use spare wheel out of the luggage compartment, taking care not to damage any paintwork. Dependent upon specification, a Tire mobility system may be fitted. The tool kit contains the following items: Recovery eye. E12 Torx socket Tail pipe finisher removal. Allen key Hub cap removal (centre trim). Wheel bolt wrench/jack handle. 19 mm deep hex socket for wheel bolts/jack handle. Jack. Reversible screwdriver. Leather tool bag containing: - Wheel insignia removal tool (centre disc). - Wheel alignment tool. Replace the tool kit contents after use and return the spare wheel to its storage well by reversing the removal procedure. Note: Please note that the content of the tool kit is dependent on the specification of the car. Therefore, your tool kit may not contain some of the listed items. It will be possible to access some tools without the removal of the spare wheel (see Fig. 14-2).

BATTERY INFORMATION Fig Battery location 1- Electrical system battery 2- Starter system battery The two batteries are located beneath the luggage compartment floor. The batteries and related components contain no user serviceable parts. Important: Do not use the battery terminals to jump start the car. This will cause damage to the electrical system. Follow the procedure described in Using jump leads on page FLAT BATTERY In the event of the main battery becoming discharged, the possible symptoms may include: Inability to lock/unlock car remotely using the remote control key. Engine will not turn over. Interior lamps do not illuminate upon opening the door. Welcome lights do not illuminate when approaching the car. Should any of the above symptoms occur, a simple operation will facilitate the starting procedure. If the car is locked: 1. Unlock the car mechanically with the remote control key blade. 2. Within 15 seconds of unlocking the car, press the Engine Start/Stop button once to activate the ignition. The vehicle electrical systems are now running on reserve power. If the ignition is not switched on within 15 seconds, the alarm is activated. When the ignition is switched on, the electronic immobiliser recognises a valid remote control key and deactivates the anti-theft alarm system. 3. Depress the brake pedal and press the Engine Start/ Stop button for a second time. The engine should start as normal. If the car is unlocked already and the alarm/immobiliser was not activated when the car was last stationary: 1. Press the Engine Start/Stop button once to activate the ignition. The vehicle electrical systems are now running on reserve power. 2. When the ignition is switched on, the electronic immobiliser recognises a valid remote control key and deactivates the anti-theft alarm system. 3. Depress the brake pedal and press the Engine Start/ Stop button for a second time. The engine should start as normal. Note: If the engine is not started within approximately 5 minutes of the first press of the Engine Start/Stop button, the vehicle electrical systems will shut down in order to preserve power. It will be necessary to repeat the starting procedure. Important: Continually failing to start the car within approximately 5 minutes of the first Engine Start/Stop button press will lead to both batteries discharging. In the event of both batteries being discharged, it will be necessary to follow the procedure described in Emergency starting. Continued

EMERGENCY STARTING Fig Emergency starting connections Because the car is fitted with two batteries, it is extremely unlikely that the following emergency starting procedure will ever be necessary. However, in the event that the battery does become discharged, the car cannot be started by pushing or towing. The only approved method of starting the car is by the use of a battery fitted to another car. WARNING: The engine compartment of any motor car is a potentially dangerous area and can cause serious personal injury. Therefore, when handling batteries always observe the following safety information. Before working on the electrical system, always switch off the engine, the ignition and all electrical equipment. Always wear gloves and eye protection. Do not tilt the battery because acid could leak out of the ventilation openings. If you get battery acid in your eyes or on your skin, immediately rinse with cold water for several minutes and get medical attention. Fires, sparks, naked lights and smoking are prohibited. When handling cables and electrical equipment, generating sparks and electrostatic charge. Never allow the battery terminals to short circuit, as high-energy sparks can cause injury. A highly explosive mixture of gases is given off when a battery is being charged. Keep children away from acid and batteries. Never charge a frozen or thawed-out battery - it could explode! If a battery has frozen, then it must be replaced. Never use a damaged battery, an explosion could result. Replace a damaged battery immediately. During any procedure that includes replacing or disconnecting/connecting a battery please ensure that the battery s vent pipe is connected securely into the location hole in the battery s lid and that the vent pipe to the other battery has not been displaced. Before commencing work on the electrical system, disconnect both batteries. Always disconnect the negative (-) cables first, followed by the positive (+) cables. Switch off all electrical consumers before reconnecting batteries. Reconnect the positive (+) cables first, followed by the negative (-) cables. Never reverse the polarity of the connections. For the sake of the environment Batteries may contain Perchlorate Material Special handling may apply, see hazardouswaste/perchlorate. The used battery must be disposed of in accordance with regulations governing the protection of the environment. Important safety warnings for handling a car battery Always heed the following warning symbols and safety precautions when working on the battery. Always wear eye protection Battery acid contains sulphuric acid. Always wear gloves and eye protection. No: Sparks, Flames, or Smoking. When a battery is charged, it produces hydrogen gas which is explosive and could cause personal injury. Always keep batteries well out of reach of children.

USING JUMP LEADS PARK TO NEUTRAL EMERGENCY RELEASE Jump leads must meet the specification DIN and the leads must have a minimum core diameter of 5.5 mm (0.22 in). Position the donor car so that its battery is adjacent to the front of your car. Apply the electronic park brake and ensure the gear levers are in park or neutral on both cars. Ensure the donor battery is of the same voltage (12 volts) as your car. Note: Ensure the two cars do not touch, or the circuit could be completed as soon as the positive terminals are connected. STARTING THE CAR Turn off the ignition. Switch off all electrical equipment on both cars and follow the procedures set out below: Turn off the ignition. Switch off all electrical equipment on both cars and follow the procedures set out below: 1. Open the bonnet (see page 15-2) and remove the engine cover. This can be done by raising the front of the cover at each side, and sliding it forwards out of the engine bay. 2. Locate the red cover on the jump start point, which is located on the left-hand side of the engine (see Fig. 14-4, inset A). Press the catch on the left hand side of the cover (when viewed from the front of the vehicle) and lift gently to access the jump start point. 3. Connect the red jump lead from the positive (+) terminal on the battery of the donor car to the jump start point. 4. Connect the black jump lead from the negative (-) terminal of the donor car to the engine lifting eye, which is located in a central position on the front of the engine. 5. Ensure that the jump leads are clear of all moving parts (see Fig. 14-4, inset B) and start the engine of the donor car. 6. Start the engine of your car. Once the engine is running normally, allow both engines to idle for several minutes. 7. Switch off the engine of the donor car and disconnect the jump leads - disconnect the leads in the reverse sequence to the connection, i.e. disconnect the black lead from your car first. Fig Transmission lock cable In the event of total electrical failure, although it will be possible to move the gear selector lever, it will not be possible to select another gear position. In order to disengage the gearbox from position P, remove the left-hand front overmat by pulling up on the top of each fastener and lift the mat out of the footwell. Using the screwdriver from the toolkit, prise the cover from the carpet above the emergency release lever (see Fig. 14-5, inset A), and remove the cover (see Fig. 14-5, inset B). Pull on the end of the cord to raise the emergency release lever (see Fig. 14-5, inset B). Continue to pull the cord until the lever reaches the upright, locked position (see Fig. 14-5, inset C). The upper part of the release lever can now be folded down. The gearbox is now in position N, and position P will remain unavailable until the emergency release lever is returned to its original position. Note: The emergency release lever must be returned to its original position in order to resume normal gearbox operation. A warning will appear in the driver information panel if the ignition is switched on while the emergency release is active. To return the lever to its original position, fold the upper part of the release lever out, and press the tab and the release lever together (see Fig. 14-5, inset D) and push back into the floor cavity. Replace the cover. WARNING: It is important that the emergency release lever is only operated when the car is stationary, on level ground and adequately secured to prevent the car from rolling. Ensure that the footbrake is applied when activating the emergency release lever. Operation while the car is on an incline could cause the car to roll. This could cause serious injury or even death. 6 ELEC. PARK BRAKE EMERGENCY RELEASE RECOVERY EYE In the event of total electrical failure, the electronic park brake cannot be operated using the switch on the centre console and will remain applied. If this is the case, it is recommended that a donor battery is used to provide power, enabling the electronic park brake to be released. Refer to Using jump leads on page 14-8 for details on the use of a donor battery. This operation should only be carried out by a qualified car recovery specialist or an authorised Bentley dealer. FIRST AID KIT (when fitted) The first aid kit is located in the luggage compartment on the right-hand side access panel. The kit is fitted into a retaining channel and is secured by a velcro strip. Always return the first aid kit to its storage position after use. Replacements for the items used, should be obtained at the earliest opportunity. SPARE WHEEL LOCATION (when fitted) The spare wheel is located below the floor of the luggage compartment (see Fig. 14-2). For further information, refer to the heading Temporary use spare wheel on page TIRE MOBILITY SYSTEM (when fitted) In the event of a puncture, the tire mobility system can be used as a temporary measure to achieve a seal around the damaged area of a tire and to inflate it so that the car can be driven to a tire specialist. The tire mobility system is located in a well below the floor of the luggage compartment. For further information, refer to the heading Tire mobility system on page Fig Front mounting point for the recovery eye FITTING THE RECOVERY EYE TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR The removable recovery eye, stowed in the tool kit, is designed for use by qualified recovery specialists to assist in recovering the car if a breakdown or accident should occur. Refer to the heading Tools location on page 14-4, for details on accessing the tool kit. The front mounting point for the recovery eye is located behind the lower front grille panel, on the right-hand side (see Fig. 14-6, item 1). To remove the grille panel, unfasten the two securing screws (see Fig. 14-6, arrowed), using the screwdriver supplied in the tool kit. Carefully unclip the grille from the surround, then pull the grille away from the bumper. Stow the grille panel safely in the luggage compartment. Remove the blanking cap (when fitted), then screw the recovery eye (see Fig. 14-6, inset) into the mounting, ensuring it is fully tightened.

FITTING THE RECOVERY EYE TO THE REAR OF THE CAR Tail pipe finisher removal and rear recovery eye mounting point location WARNING: Fitting the recovery eye to the rear of the car will require removing the left hand tail pipe finisher. It is recommended that the recovery eye is fitted by a qualified car recovery specialist. The tail pipe finisher may be extremely hot. Allow sufficient time for the tail pipe finisher to cool down before removing. The rear mounting point for the recovery eye is located beneath the rear bumper, on the left-hand side. To fit the recovery eye to the rear mounting point, the tail pipe finisher must be removed. Unfasten the external torx bolt (see Fig. 14-7, item A) using the E12 Torx socket and the wheel bolt wrench provided in the tool kit. Carefully remove the tail pipe finisher. Stow the tail pipe finisher safely in the luggage compartment. Remove the blanking cap (when fitted), then screw the recovery eye into the mounting point (see Fig. 14-7, item D), ensuring the recovery eye is fully tightened. When the recovery eye is not in use, it should be returned to its storage location in the tool kit. The recovery eye is designed for use by qualified car recovery specialists. It is not designed to be used to tow other cars, trailers or caravans. Caution: Avoid excessive towing effort. During towing operations on surfaces other than road surfaces, there is always the danger that the attachment will be overloaded and damage could occur. It is recommended that an authorised Bentley dealer is consulted if a car emergency situation arises, in order to ensure that the correct procedures are adhered to. Continued

TOWING THE CAR WARNING: Both the front and rear recovery eyes are not towing eyes and should be used only to recover the vehicle from an emergency situation onto a suitable transporter using a solid tow bar. Wherever possible the front recovery eye should be used over the rear installation (the rear recovery eye should only be used on flat ground, at very low speed and for the shortest period possible). Failure to comply with this could damage the recovery eye installation and associated body components. With the engine not running, hydraulic assistance for the braking and steering systems will not be maintained. Therefore, a greater allowance for braking distances and manoeuvrability must be made. Always recover the car with the park to neutral emergency release engaged, otherwise damage to the transmission components may occur. The car should only be towed on a standard suspended tow arm, using the front wheels to secure the car to the arm. A suspended tow arm should not be used for distances exceeding 150 km (93 miles), and the maximum towing speed must not exceed 70 km/h (43 mph). For greater distances the propeller shaft must be disconnected from the final drive or the car must be transported. If you suspect that there may be damage to the transmission components, do not tow the car. Refer to the heading Transporting the car on page In all cases, a four wheel transporter is the recommended option to prevent damage to the vehicle. Always adhere to the following guidelines: Switch on the hazard warning lamps. Turn the ignition on. This disengages the steering lock and enables the horn, windscreen wipers and washers to be operated. Apply the footbrake and engage the park to neutral emergency release. For further information, refer to the heading Park to neutral emergency release on page Release the electronic park brake. If, due to a fault, or if the battery is discharged it is not possible to release the electronic park brake, specialist procedures must be carried out. For further information, refer to the heading Electronic park brake emergency release on page This should only be done by a qualified car recovery specialist or an authorised Bentley dealer. Release the footbrake when towing commences. Note: Please adhere to regulations concerning towing. The hazard warning lamps of both cars must normally be switched on, but observe any regulations to the contrary. TRANSPORTING THE CAR Before the car is loaded on to the trailer or transporter and if it is possible to start the engine, change the suspension setting to Raise. For further information, refer to the heading Ride height control on page Caution: Owing to the size of the wheels, they could be vulnerable to damage from conventional tire tie-down straps. Therefore, ensure that the straps are arranged such that the metal parts do not contact the wheels or paintwork. Do not tie the car down by the bodywork, the suspension could level, causing the car to become loose. EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE In the event of an emergency where it is necessary to call for assistance from the emergency services (Police, Fire or Ambulance services), a facility is available with the mobile telephone system to make the call quickly. For further information, refer to the heading Emergency calls on page 9-7.
