1 Page 1 of 6 SECTION : Suspension System 2004 Explorer/Mountaineer Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Procedure revision date: 08/05/2005 Wheel Bearing, Hub, Knuckle, Upper Arm and Lower Arm Rear Printable View (599 KB) Special Tool(s) Remover, Front Wheel Hub 205-D070 (D93P-1175-B) or equivalent Remover, Drive Pinion Bearing Cone 205-D002 (D79L-4621-A) or equivalent 1. CAUTION: Do not loosen the axle wheel hub retainer until the wheel and tire are removed from the vehicle. Wheel bearing damage will occur if the wheel bearing is unloaded with the weight of the vehicle applied. NOTE: Have an assistant press the brake pedal to keep the axle from turning. NOTE: Only carry out this step if servicing the wheel knuckle and wheel bearing. Remove the nut and washer. Discard the nut. 2. Remove the parking brake shoes. For additional information, refer to Section Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustrations and tables. To remove individual parts, only carry out the listed steps: Part Steps Wheel knuckle 1-13 Wheel bearing 1-13 Lower arm 6, 7, Upper arm 4, 5, 26, 27, Upper arm bushing (rearward mounting) Toe link 2, 3, 14, 15

To install, reverse the removal procedure. 5. Check and, if necessary, align the rear end. For additional information, refer to Wheel Alignment in this section. Item 1: Axle Nut 1. CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the outboard CV joint from the hub. Damage to the threads and internal CV joint components can result. Using the special tool, press the outboard CV joint until it is loose from the hub.
4 Page 4 of 6 Item 3: Toe Link-to-Wheel Knuckle Bolt 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the boot while separating the toe link from the wheel knuckle. Remove the bolt and separate the toe link from the wheel knuckle. Item 5: Upper Arm-to-Wheel Knuckle Bolt 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the boot while separating the ball joint from the wheel knuckle. Remove the bolt and separate the upper arm from the wheel knuckle. Item 8: Wheel Knuckle 1. If equipped, remove the bolt and position the wheel speed sensor aside. 2. Position the parking brake cable aside and remove the wheel knuckle. Item 10: Wheel Hub 1. Using a suitable press, remove the wheel hub. 2. Remove the brake disc shield. 3. NOTE: This step may not be necessary if the inner wheel bearing race remains in the wheel knuckle after removing the wheel hub. If necessary, using the special tool, press the inner wheel bearing race from the wheel hub. Item 13: Wheel Bearing
5 Page 5 of 6 1. Using a suitable press and adapter, remove the wheel bearing. Item 17: Stabilizer Bar Link-to-Stabilizer Bar Nut and Bushing 1. Remove the nut and the stabilizer bar link. Item 26: Upper Arm-to-Frame Bolt (Rearward Mounting) 1. Remove the spare tire to gain access to the bolts. 2. NOTE: RH side only. Remove the fuel filler intermediate tube retainers. Item 30: Upper Arm-to-Frame Bolt (Forward Mounting) Item 26: Upper Arm-to-Frame Bolt (Rearward Mounting) 1. CAUTION: Make sure that the upper arm-to-frame mounting bolts are routed through the frame and the bushing before tightening. Do not tighten until the installation procedure is complete and the weight of the vehicle is resting on the wheel and tire assemblies. Item 23: Lower Arm-to-Frame Nut (Forward Mounting) Item 20: Lower Arm-to-Frame Nut (Rearward Mounting) Item 18: Shock Absorber-to-Lower Arm Bolt
