2 INSTALLATION Mounting the Controller The MCP is designed to mount on a 1900 (4 x4 ) electrical box. If the MCP is to be panel mounted, or if additional room is needed for wiring, an extension skirt is available. Locate the MCP in a convenient location near the unit to be controlled. Mount the MCP away from excessive heat or cold. Ambient operating temperature is from 20 to 120 F. After completing all the wiring connections (see below) use the two screws provided to mount the MCP to the 1900 box. Installing the Temperature Sensor (Included with MCP-Temperature) The temperature sensor wires can be extended up to 500' by splicing with 18 gauge shielded wire. Do not run wires in conduit with line voltage. If measuring liquid temperature, the sensor should be inserted into a 3/8" ID well (HT# or equivalent). The MCP will operate based on the temperature it reads at the sensor location. Therefore, select a sensor location which is representative of the entire system. The wires can also be connected to the rear of the MCP using the Rear Wire connector*. Connect the sensor wires to the orange and yellow Rear Wires. Polarity is not important. Either wire from the sensor can be connected to either MCP sensor input. Installing a Pressure Sensor (Included with MCP-Pressure) Attach a 1/4 brass isolation tube (pigtail) to the steam header. Screw the pressure sensor to the pigtail. The sensor has 1/4 NPT tapered threads. The BLACK and RED pressure sensor wires can be extended up to 500 by splicing with 18 gauge shielded wire. Any other pressure sensor wires (green, white, or shield) and the tube are not used and do not need to be extended. Do not run wires in conduit with line voltage. The MCP will operate based on the pressure sensor reading. Therefore, select a sensor location which is representative of the entire system. The pressure sensor BLACK wire should be connected to the terminal marked SENSOR (-). The RED wire from the pressure sensor should be connected to the terminal marked SENSOR (+). The transducer wires can also be connected to the back of the MCP using the Rear Wire connector*. Connect the BLACK sensor wire to yellow Rear Wire and the RED sensor wire to the orange Rear Wire. Connecting the T-STAT terminals The thermostat input can be used to enable or disable the system by connecting it either to a thermostat or external control. The thermostat input should be dry contact only. Polarity is not important. Either wire from the thermostat can be connected to either MCP T-STAT terminal. If no thermostat or control is connected to the T-STAT terminals, leave the jumper supplied as a contact between the T- STAT terminals. No outputs will be active unless the T-STAT terminals are closed. Connect to T-STAT terminals to Enable the System. If not used, DO NOT remove Jumper WARNING T-STAT contacts must be closed (shorted) for the control to be active. - + SENSOR T-STAT 24VAC Black Red Wire to 0-30, 0-100, or PSI pressure transducer observing the polarity. 3 Wiring the Power - MCP can use either 120VAC or 24VAC 120VAC Attach line voltage to the two blue wires extending from the back of the MCP. Use wire nuts, or wrap the connections with electrical tape. Class 1 voltages must enter the enclosure through a different opening from any Class 2 wiring. 24VAC Use a dedicated transformer with at least a 5VA output. Bring 24VAC to the two screws on the front of the MCP marked 24VAC. 24VAC can also be connected to the rear of the MCP using the Rear Wire connector*. Connect the 24VAC to the violet and gray Rear Wires. WARNING The MCP can accept only one source of power: 120VAC, or 24VAC. If more than one power source is applied, the unit may be damaged. Wiring the Valve/Boiler Output The MCP output is suitable for 135Ω actuators (see diagram). The Red MCP wire is Common and should be connected to the R terminal of the actuator. Connect the Black (Close) and White (Open) MCP wires to the B and W terminals of the actuator consecutively. Wiring the Heating Source Output The MCP has a set of N.O. contacts to activate a heating source (Yellow wires from back). The N.O. contacts DO NOT source power. They are simply a dry contact. The MCP can switch 10A, 1/8 HP at 120V. If more power is required, an external relay must be used. 4 Startup Settings Whenever the MCP is powered up, it will display the software version number and then the current operating mode. Each display will remain on the screen approximately 5 seconds. If the mode is correct, there is no need to make any adjustments. Once the mode has been set for a particular application, it will be retained in memory and will not need to be reset. Note that if you do change an operating mode, you will need to reset all the settings. An operating mode can only be changed when it is being displayed in the start-up sequence. To restart the sequence it is necessary to remove power to the MCP and then power it again. Set the operating modes as described in sequence below: Temperature Operation F Fahrenheit or C Celsius (Temperature Models Only) If the display shows F then the Digi-Span will operate in Fahrenheit degrees. If the display shows C then the Digi-Span will operate in Celsius degrees. To change the mode, hold down the center button while pushing either the UP or DOWN button to toggle between the displays of F and C. When the correct temperature mode is selected, release the buttons and wait approximately 5 seconds. Pressure Range P03 (0-30), P10 (0-100), or P20 (0-200) (Pressure Models Only) If the display show P03 then the range will be from 0 to 30 psi and be displayed in 0.5psi increments. If the display shows P10 or P20, the range will be 0 to 100psi or 0 to 200psi and display in 1psi increments. To change the range, hold down the center button while pushing either the UP or DOWN button to toggle between pressure ranges. When the range is selected, release the buttons and wait approximately 5 seconds.operation Operating Mode nor or blr When the MCP is set to nor for valve operation in which the control will modulate the actuator of the motorized valve based on how far the system temperature/pressure SYS is from the Set Point SP settings. When the MCP is set to blr for boiler operation in which the control will modulate the burner based on how far the system temperature/pressure SYS is from the Set Point SP settings. Also, it allows you adjust the Boiler Purge Time PUr and the Differential around the Set Point SP setting to prevent short cycling. Failed Output Mode FOn (Output ON) or FOF (Output OFF) The MCP allows you to choose how outputs should behave when sensor fails. By selecting FOn (Output ON) the 135Ω output and the heating source output will be active when sensor fails. Using FOF (Output OFF) the 135Ω output and the heating source output will be inactive when sensor fails. STARTUP SETTINGS Software Version Temp standard F (Fahrenheit) C (Celsius) Operating mode nor (Valve) blr (Boiler) Pressure standard P03 (30PSI) P10 (100PSI) P20 (200PSI) 4 Output Fail mode FOn (Enable) FOF (Disable) 4
5 Operation Settings The following are the settings in which can be read or changed while the control is in operation. By pressing the Press to Read button multiple times the MCP will rotate its display between the available settings. After a setting symbol is displayed, tits value will diplay after 3 seconds. A setting can be adjusted during the display of its value by pressing the Up and Down buttons. The diplay will revert to display System temperature/pressure SYS after approximately 10 seconds. When system temperature/perssure SYS is above the Set Point SP, the display will show OFF. You can read the System temperature/ pressure by pressing the Press to Read button till SYS is displayed. Push Press to Read button Set Point SP Differential dif Gain gan Purge PUr Offset OFS System SYS Display The Set Point is the temperature or pressure which the MCP will modulate its output to hold. The temperature Set Point is adjustable between 0 F to 200 F. Default is 70 F. Pressure Set Point is depends on the startup setting. P03 (0-30 PSI) with a default of 10PSI, P10 (0-100 PSI) with a default of 30PSI, P20 (0-200 PSI) with a default of 60PSI. The Differential is the number of degrees or psi above and below the Set Point where MCP will make small or no changes to the actuator. Only available in Boiler Mode blr. The Temperature Differential is adjustable between 1 F to 40 F. Default is 2 F. Pressure Differential depends on the startup setting. P03 (0.5-5 PSI) with a default of 2PSI, P10 (1-20 PSI) with a default of 7PSI, P20 (1-20 PSI) with a default of 7PSI. The Gain controls how aggressively the MCP will change the level of output to the actuator when the system is away from the Set Point ± the Differential. The Gain is adjustable between -10 to +10. Default is 0. The Purge should be set to the boiler manufacturer recommendation. It is adjustable between 0.0 to 9.9 minutes with a default of 2.0 minutes. Available in Boiler Mode blr only. The Offset calibrates the pressure sensor reading by the number of pounds selected. Pressure Differential depends on the startup setting. For P03 ( PSI) with a default of 0PSI, P10 ( PSI) with a default of 0PSI, P20 ( PSI) with a default of 0PSI. System temperature or pressure. Will read OFF when above Set Point. Will read OPn or SHt when sensor fails. Value is Read only and can not be changed. Only available when Boiler Mode blr is selected during startup. Only available in MCP Pressure control. Output Light The output light will flash whenever the MCP is adjusting the valve position. The time between flashes can vary from 5 seconds to 30 seconds or even longer if the set point is satisfied. The MCP makes small changes to the actuator position, and then evaluates the effect of that change on the system. The output light will be ON during the Purge cycle. 5 MCP Manual
6 Troubleshooting No Display Check the power to the MCP. The MCP can run on any of the power sources described on page 2. Turn the power off and back on. OPn Display The MCP does not see a sensor connected. Check the wires are continuous from the sensor to the MCP controller. Then follow the procedure for Incorrect Temperature or Pressure Display. SHt Display The MCP sees a short across the input terminals. If you remove the sensor wires from the MCP terminals, the display should change to read OPn. If the display does not change to OPn, the MCP may be damaged. Incorrect Temperature Display Remove the wires from the SENSOR screws. The display should change to read OPn. If it doesn t, the MCP may be damaged. Take an ohm reading across the detached sensor wires. The ohm reading should correspond to the chart on the opposite page. If the ohm reading is significantly different, the sensor may be damaged. Incorrect Pressure Display Remove the wires from the SENSOR screws. The display should change to read OPn. If it doesn t, the MCP may be damaged. Use a voltmeter to measure across the SENSOR screws. There should be at least 24VAC across the two terminals. If there isn t, the MCP may be damaged. Finally, reconnect the sensor with a ma meter in series with one sensor wire. The ma reading should correspond to the Pressure Sensor Chart on the opposite page. You can use the Offset (see pg. 5) to make small adjustments to the pressure reading. Output Red Light does not stay on The red light will flash only when the MCP is adjusting the actuator. The red light should be on constantly only during purge cycle PUr. MCP does not move the motor Check the Set Point SP and Differential dif settings. If the Sensor reading SYS is within the Differential band, the MCP may not adjust the motor position. If this is not the case, the MCP output can be tested with an ohm meter. Remove any wires connected to the MCP Red, White, and Black output wires. If the System reading SYS has been below the Set Point SP for at least 10 minutes, then an ohm reading from the Red to Black wires should be less then 25Ω; the reading from Red to White should be more than 135Ω. If the system temperature has been above the set point for at least 10 minutes, then an ohm reading from the Red to Black wires should be more than 135Ω; the reading from Red to White should be less than 25Ω. MCP does not control system to hold the set point temperature The set point is the average value the system will hold. If the system temperature/pressure is overshooting and undershooting the Set Point SP by a small amount, increase the Differential value dif. If the system temperature/pressure significantly overshoots and undershoots the Set Point SP, decrease the Gain gan setting by one or two. If the system temperature/ pressure is almost always below the Set Point SP, increase the Gain gan setting by one or two. Wait approximately 15 minutes to see how the system responds. 6
