Propane Belt Squeal Models Affected: Visions with Propane Engines ISSUE Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) Belt chirping/squealing caused by improper fore-aft crankshaft pulley positioning. CORRECTIVE ACTION ---- Add crankshaft pulley spacers as necessary and replace FEAD belt. PROCEDURE WARNING: Always follow all Federal, State, Local and Shop safety standards and use proper safety equipment when performing these procedures. Thoroughly read and understand all instructions before performing this procedure. 1. Park bus on a level surface, apply parking brake, remove ignition key, and chock wheels. 2. Disconnect battery by removing negative cable and moving it away from battery terminal. 3. Remove components as needed to gain access to Front End Accessory Drive belt on engine. Components include: Fan Shroud Engine Cooling Fan --S E R V I C E B U L L E T I N------S 1 1 T G-----
4. Using a straight edge (minimum 18 inches long), check crankshaft pulley alignment with power steering pump pulley (see illustration below). Front face of pulleys must be within.020 inches of each other. Add spacers as necessary per the following instructions. 5. If pulleys are aligned, then install new accessory belt per instructions on pages 3, 9, and 10. STRAIGHT EDGE POSITION CRANKSHAFT PULLEY POWER STEERING PULLEY Page 2 of 10
6. Using 3/8" square drive, rotate tensioner counterclockwise and slip belt off pulleys. Slowly rotate tensioner back to its freearm position. Remove belt. TENSIONER Page 3 of 10
7. Using impact wrench, remove crankshaft pulley bolt and washer from crankshaft nose. 8. Locate a three-jawed crankshaft pulley removal tool along with a 3.75 " dowel pin. Install dowel pin within center of threaded shaft of removal tool. 9. Position tool to crankshaft pulley with dowel pin going inside nose of crankshaft, and puller jaws going on three flats of pulley. Finger-tighten center threaded shaft of puller until it holds itself in place on pulley. 3 JAWED PULLER WITH DOWEL PINS Page 4 of 10
10. Using socket wrench, tighten puller center shaft as much as possible. 11. Loosen threaded center shaft and remove puller from pulley. Replace 3.75" dowel with 5.50" dowel and reinstall puller on crankshaft pulley. 12. Use socket wrench to tighten threaded center screw of puller until pulley is free from crankshaft. Page 5 of 10
13. Add 2 crankshaft spacers (BB# ) to nose of crankshaft. Push spacers rearward on crankshaft nose past seal against other spacer. Page 6 of 10
14. Apply engine oil to crankshaft nose, front crank seal lip, inner diameter of crankshaft pulley, and machined surface of pulley that will contact front seal. 15. Hand position pulley on nose of crankshaft. 16. Thread end of installation tool into nose of crankshaft as far as possible. Snug tool using 1/2" wrench on flats on end of tool. 17. Hand-tighten nut on other end of installation tool against pulley. 18. Tighten nut of installation tool to press pulley onto crankshaft nose. Use care not to nick front seal during installation. Stop tightening once pulley contacts front surface of crankshaft nose. CRANKSHAFT PULLEY INSTALLATION TOOL NOTE 1/2" WRENCH FLATS ON END TIGHTEN THIS NUT TO INSTALL PULLEY THIS END THREADS INTO CRANKSHAFT Page 7 of 10
Propane Belt Squeal 19. Loosen nut of installation tool. If needed, use 1/2" wrench to remove tool from crankshaft. 20. Thread crankshaft retainer bolt with washer into nose of crankshaft. 21. Torque crankshaft bolt to 189 ft-lbs (250 N-m). Use a strap wrench on belt grooves or a pry bar (shown) through crankshaft pulley spokes to prevent crankshaft from rotating. 22. Check pulley alignment per step 4 on page 2. Page 8 of 10
23. Install new accessory belt ( ) over pulleys using routing shown in picture below. Leave belt off idler pulley between tensioner and alternator. 24. Using a 3/8" square drive wrench, rotate tensioner counter-clockwise in order to install belt under idler pulley between tensioner and alternator. Install belt under pulley. 25. Slowly allow tensioner to rotate clockwise and put tension into belt. 26. Inspect belt to ensure it is properly seated in all pulley grooves. Page 9 of 10
27. Reinstall all parts that were required to be removed or relocated for this procedure. 28. Reconnect negative battery cable to battery. 29. Start engine and verify proper function of accessory drive belt. 30. Remove chocks and place bus back in normal service.
