1 Fig. 2: Identifying Self-Adjuster Components (Drum Brakes) WHEEL CYLINDERS Raise and support vehicle. Remove brake shoes. See REAR BRAKE SHOES. Disconnect brake pipe from wheel cylinder. See Fig. 3. Remove wheel cylinder bolts. Remove wheel cylinder. To install, reverse removal procedure. Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM.
2 Fig. 3: Brake Pipe Removal At Rear Cylinder MASTER CYLINDER 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect electrical connector from master cylinder reservoir. Disconnect brakelines from master cylinder, working carefully to avoid bending brakelines. Plug openings. Remove master cylinder nuts. Remove master cylinder. 2. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten brakeline fitting and master cylinder nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM. POWER BRAKE BOOSTER NOTE: Vacuum booster and push pin are a matched set. During manufacturing, booster is measured and a push pin of the correct length is selected to match booster. Boosters and push pins are not interchangeable and MUST always be installed as a matched set.
3 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner. On ABS-equipped vehicles, remove battery, battery box and battery tray. On all vehicles, remove master cylinder nuts. Taking care not to bend brakelines, move master cylinder away from booster far enough to allow booster removal. Disconnect vacuum hose from check valve on booster. 2. Inside vehicle, disconnect booster push rod from brake pedal pin. Remove 4 nuts securing booster to firewall. From underhood, remove booster, tilt booster to disengage pushrod from brake pedal pin. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten master cylinder and booster nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. PROPORTIONING VALVE Proportioning valves are part of master cylinder. Replace master cylinder if service is required. See MASTER CYLINDER. REAR AXLE HUB NOTE: Rear axle hubs are not serviceable. If hub is excessively worn or damaged, replace as an assembly. On ABS-equipped vehicles, wheel speed sensor is part of hub assembly. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove drum or rotor. For rotor, see REAR BRAKE ROTOR. On ABS-equipped vehicles, disconnect wheel speed sensor connector at back of hub assembly. On all vehicles, remove 4 hub bolts. Remove hub assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten hub assembly bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. OVERHAUL NOTE: For overhaul procedures, use illustrations. See Fig. 4 -Fig. 6. Manufacturer does not recommend overhaul of power brake booster or master cylinder. If service is required, replace component.
