2 Thank you for purchasing the Miata ECU ReFlash. We regard your installation as a mutual project and will be pleased to offer help at any time. If clarification of these instructions is required, please call BTP at Suggestions for improvements of these instructions are welcome. Send an to info@belltuning.com. The success of this installation will be determined by a variety of factors. These instructions should be adhered to at all times. The vehicle must be in excellent condition and proper tune prior to starting the installation. It is not necessary that the installer has any previous experience with forced induction. All left or right directional references will be from the driver viewpoint. For example, the turbo mounts on the left side. Please read the statement of warranty at the end of these instructions prior to starting the installation. The installer should pass these instructions on to the owner-driver. STOP!! READ THE WARRANTY STATEMENT BELOW AND AT THE END OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS. If the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and fuel filter have not been changed in the last year or 10k miles, please do so now. The spark plugs must be gapped down to to NO EXCEPTIONS. USE ONLY THE FUEL OCTANE THE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR. AGAIN, NO EXCEPTIONS. Warranty Notice Should the tune provided on the ECU reflash not be correct, BTP will change the tune once. In order to be considered for a warranty tune, BTP must be notified within 14 days of receipt of the ECU. Dyno sheets with power, torque, and air/fuel ratio curves must also be provided for reference, at the customer s expense. Please have dyno runs submitted with a reference to engine rpm and not engine speed. Additional information may be needed and a sheet provided to collect information. No exceptions. Copyright BTP

3 Tool and Equipment Requirements The following tools and equipment will be required to conveniently accomplish this install: Phillips Screw Driver Assorted sockets (to remove seat if needed) Clean rags 10mm Wrench Preliminary The car needs to be in good working order prior to modifying the ECU. Disconnect the Negative terminal on the battery. The battery is located in the trunk, on the right side. Save all fasteners as they will be reused to install the ECU. Re-gap the Spark Plugs to to Remove any O2 signal Modifiers. Remove any other electronic mods done to the car. i.e. Voodoo box, TPS Mod, Timing wheel. Place the MAF and IAT sensors in the OEM locations. Remove the cover below the steering wheel Removing the ECU All ECUs are located under the dash, just above the clutch pedal. Refer to picture # 1 & 2. Picture # 1 Picture # 2 Disconnect the ECU plugs from the wire harness. Refer to picture # 3. Picture # 3 Copyright BTP

4 There is second bracket holding the ECU in place. It is not possible to see the bracket or stud if the ECU wires have not been disconnected and gently pulled downward out of the way. In the upper left hand corner (above and behind the yellow key lock unit) follow the bracket back to a stud. There will be two brackets attached to this stud. Remove the nut, and pull both brackets off of the stud. The ECU can now be pulled straight down to remove from the car. It might be helpful to remove the yellow key lock unit and push the thick wire loom out of the way. It is also easier to visualize the stud with the cover below the steering wheel removed. It is not necessary to remove the odd shaped mounting brackets. Wrap the ECU with a good amount of cushion, and ship it to BTP. Please us with the tracking number. NO EXCEPTIONS. Installing the ECU Once the ECU is received back from BTP, you will start the car prior to tightening the ECU fasteners. Plug the ECU into the ECU harness connectors. Let it hand under the dash. Attach the negative terminal to the battery. Start the car. Do not be surprised if the car idles above 1000 rpm for a moment, or stalls immediately upon start up. If the car stalls, restart it. If the car does not start, please call BTP immediately. Once the car has started, unplug the ECU. Remove the negative terminal to the battery. Place the ECU back into position on the upper stud. Put both brackets back into place. Secure with the original nut. Place the ECU back onto the stud behind the clutch pedal. Use the stock nut to secure. Plug the ECU connectors back into the ECU. Connect the negative terminal on the battery. Start the car and drive it normally. It is sometimes necessary for the car to relearn idle conditions. Do not be alarmed if the car stalls a few times or dips at idle occasionally - for he first 10 starts or so. If the conditions persist, please contact BTP immediately. Program Verification The car must be run on the dyno to verify the program within 2 weeks of receipt! When calling to make an appointment for the dyno tell them you need three baseline runs with AFR and boost. No tuning is being done. Use the term baseline runs so they do not overcharge you! If you can get in on a dyno day, sometimes the runs are less expensive. When you are at the dyno, please make sure the dyno shop is aware of and does the following: 1. Three baseline runs are needed. No tuning is being done 2. Air Fuel Ratio needs to be logged. Please let BTP know where it was sampled - at the tailpipe or in the downpipe. 3. Boost needs to be logged. 4. The Miata is a wasted spark ignition set up. Plugs fire every 360*. It is very important that the dyno shop correct the run settings or else all results are invalid. 5. Run the car to 7000rpm - regardless of what the tachometer says. (Remember we changed the rev limiter! Place a sticky note next to the tach to remind the dyno operator to run to 7k rpm.) 6. Make sure the run references RPM and not engine speed. 7. List all results in STD correction factor. Copyright BTP

5 General Rules of Operation Use the fuel the ECU was programmed for. If 93 octane fuel was specified, use ONLY 93 octane fuel. Do not apply maximum boost for more than 30 second durations. Always re-gap the spark plugs down to to Change the spark plugs yearly. If any sounds of rough combustion/detonation/engine knock occur, cease using boost until the cause is identified and corrected. It is the responsibility of the installer to review these general rules of operation with the owner/driver. If the car stalls and loses power, please call BTP immediately. Do not raise the boost without confirmation that the car has adequate fuel when under boost. If the boost is run below what it is programmed for, it will run rich. If any hardware is changed on the car, a new ECU program must be purchased to work with those parts. Opening of the ECU case will void all warranty considerations. Do not use the OEM chip returned in the new chip holder, or on the ECU board. If the car needs to be returned to a stock program at a later date, the BTP ECU chip must be sent to BTP. We will save the OEM program to the new chip and return the chip to you. There is no charge for this service, however, no refunds are given if the original program is not used. Warranty Information All ECU programs are warrantied for 14 days for accuracy. If problems arise from using a BTP part in a manner other than intended, a part is installed incorrectly, or additional parts are install that the tune is not configured for - BTP reserves the right to refuse warranty coverage for damages. If the tune is incorrect, we will provide a reprogram (within 14 days) where possible (data & dyno graphs will be required) for 14 days from date of receipt of the ECU. This guarantee does not cover freight, labor, tuning /dyno time, and the guarantee only applies to the product price. No Exceptions. If it is desired to remove the ECU reflash within the 14 days, the ECU must be returned to BTP. We will replace the programmed chip with a chip that contains the OEM program. BTP will only refund the purchase price of the ReFlash minus $100. The $100 fee is for the chip, pins, and labor to solder it to the ECU. We will not refund any ReFlash that contained any custom programming. BTP reserves the right to inspect any item before any warranty will be granted. BTP will not reimburse for any labor charges on warranty items that occur. BTP extends no warranty nor accepts liability to the ECU, socket, or chip if removed from the ECU by anyone other than BTP. Sockets and chips cannot be moved from one ECU to another. BTP extends no warranty nor accepts liability to any original, stock, or replacement components on the vehicle. BTP will pay for UPS ground or Priority mail shipping on all warranty programs. International orders will be priority mail. If faster shipping is desired, the shipping / freight charges are the responsibility of the end user. In this instance, the customer will pay for the upgraded portion only. Copyright BTP

6 Terms of Sale All shortages from the parts list must be reported to BTP within 14 days of receipt. BTP does not pay any towing expenses. All returned items are subject to a 25% re-stocking fee. BTP accepts no liability for death or injury to any person or persons under any circumstance. The re-seller assumes all responsibility for the end user s knowledge of this warranty. BTP does not guarantee that these parts kits will pass smog and/or OBD II tests. If the original ECU chip is used on the ECU board, or in the encrypted BTP chip - damage could result to the ECU or immobilizer and/or lock the ignition. BTP is not liable for any immobilizer that locks up the ignition, in any circumstance. Acceptance, re-sell, or use of any BTP part constitutes full agreement by the re-seller/end user, that the terms of sale and warranty are fully understood and accepted in full.
