2 1. General The Didacta s IC18DV/92/SCP Multipurpose Distillation Plant with Automatic Control can be used to perform a wide range of tests on binary, continuous or batch distillation processes. Suitable options make it possible to process azeotropic mixtures, to carry out the distillation under vacuum or in steam current (stripping). Of modular design, the training set is very flexible and easy to use, and can be integrated at a later stage with one or more of the many options available. The SCP control system interacts with the process, practicing a computerized control. Therefore, it allows to acquire in real time the characteristic data of the plant, to plot the curves on screen or print them out, to store the experimental data on disk or print them. A manual of exercises completes the supply. 2. Composition The IC18DV/92/SCP equipment consists of a basic plant fitted with a double section of plate and bubble-cap type column (code ) and the following options: Double section of perforated plate type column (code ); Double section of Rashig ring type column (code ); Differential manometer (code ); Device for the distillation of azeotropic mixtures (code ); Device for the separation of distillate in several phases (code ); Vacuum distillation device (cod ); Electric boiler for steam production (code ). 3. Description Basic plant The basic plant is composed of a distillation column, installed on a suitable frame of stainless steel, and an electrical panel to control and monitor the system. The column has been designed for both continuous and batch operation, and it includes (see fig. 1): no. 2 sections of plate and bubble-cap type column, of special borosilicate glass, 50 mm aprox. inner diameter, with 3 temperature measuring points and 1 sample drawing point for each section (1); Bottom reboiler with 2 kw heating resistors, thermometer (4); Bottom product cooler (5); Bottom product tank (6 litre capacity) with drawing tap (6); Intermediate feeding section of special borosilicate glass, with a measuring point and a sample drawing point (7); Backflow head with condenser, temperature measuring point and sample drawing (8); Distillate cooler (9); Intermediate graduated receiver to measure the volume of distillate (10); Distillate collection tank (1 litre capacity) (11); Supply pre-heater with 1 kw resistor, thermometer and thermostat (12); Supply tank (10 litre capacity) (16); No. 12 thermo-resistances (T1 to T12); Backflow solenoid valve (EV1); Bottom product extraction solenoid valve (EV2); Supply solenoid valve (EV3); Steam feeding solenoid valve (EV4); Coolant solenoid valve (EV5); Coolant flowmeter transducer (F) with analog output; Temperature control system on pre-heater (VR1); Temperature control system on bottom reboiler (VR2); Process Control System makes it possible to acquire on a Personal Computer, in real time, the principal process parameters and to interact with the same process by applying a computerized control action. The electronic transducers, electronic actuators and signal conditioning kit also includes the following components: System for automatic On-Off control of 3 different levels in the bottom reboiler (A); System for automatic On-Off control of the level in the pre-heater (B); System for automatic On-Off control of heating temperatures in the bottom reboiler; System for automatic On-Off control of heating temperatures in the pre-heater; Coolant low indicator pressure switch (D); System for the automatic control of the backflow solenoid valve (EV1); System for the automatic control of the bottom product extraction solenoid valve (EV2); System for the automatic control of the supply solenoid valve (EV3); System for the automatic control of the steam solenoid valve (EV4); System for the automatic control of the coolant solenoid valve (EV5); Metering pump with adjustable speed for supply flow-rate control (P). A fault simulator which makes it possible to simulate the seven commonest faults on the system by means of microswitches and LED failure indicators. Page 2

3 The monitoring and control software runs in the MS-Windows environment and makes it possible to acquire on a Personal Computer all the quantities considered during the tests, to process them and to produce diagrams for a thorough understanding of the process and the problems associated with system operation. Furthermore, it makes it possible to save the data and the diagrams obtained on a disk, or to print them out. Therefore, it allows the digital process control via software and the alarm management functions, with automatic intervention on the system (see fig. 2). The signal conditioning unit, the A/D-D/A conversion board and the digital I/O board, the fault simulator and the control and monitoring panel are housed in a rack type cabinet. The control and monitoring electric panel includes: No.12 digital instruments for simultaneous reading of temperatures in the plant, with analog output; No. 1 bottom reboiler electric power control and measuring instrument with two, separately controlled, resistors; No. 1 pre-heater electric power control and measuring instrument; No. 1 backflow control timer; No. 1 coolant water flowmeter; No. 5 solenoid valve manual control switches; No. 1 main switch with automatic differential device; No. 7 fault simulation switches. Optional components Double section of perforated plate type column (code ) Option (2) includes no. 2 sections of Oldershaw perforated plate column, of special borosilicate glass, 50 mm aprox inner diameter, with 3 measuring points and 1 sample drawing point for each section. They can be easily fitted in place of the standard plate and bubble-cap type sections (1). Double section of Rashig ring type column (code ) Option (3) includes no. 2 sections of Rashig ring packed type column, of special borosilicate glass, 50 mm aprox inner diameter, with 3 measuring points and 1 sample drawing point for each section. They can be easily fitted in the place of the standard plate and bubble-cap type sections (1). Differential manometer (code ) The mercury U-type differential manometer (13) makes it possible to measure pressure drops between the column, the instrument includes a safety cooler (18). Device for the distillation of azeotropic mixtures (code ) The device includes: Universal phase divider for azeotropic mixtures (17); Safety cooler (18); Collection tank (1 litre capacity) (19). Device for the separation of distillate in several phases (cod ) This device (20) makes it possible to separate the distillate into several phases and uses 4 collection tanks with 0.1 litre capacity; it can only work by device for the distillation of azeotropic mixtures (optional code ). Vacuum distillation device (code ) This device makes it possible to create vacuum conditions in the column and includes: Rotary vacuum pump, complete with accessory and lubricant oil (21); High-accuracy vacuum control electronic device (22); Separation trap between the vacuum control device and the manifold (23); Manifold for the distribution of vacuum conditions in four different points of the column (24); Mercury differential manometer, U-shaped type (25). Electric boiler T71D/9 for steam production (code ) The boiler (26) uses electric resistors and has the following technical features: Steam production: 9 kg/h max.; Operating pressure: 4.5 bar; Water feeding: from mains; Power supply: 220/380 V three-phase - 50/60 Hz - 7 kw max.
