1 GM TRUCK Double Din Head Unit Install Kit Please read all instructions including the *install tips* first! 1. Disconnect the vehicle s battery. 2. Remove the dash panel; Lower the tilt on the steering column to its lowest position, press your park brake fully, put the key in the ignition and turn it forward (but do not start the vehicle) and shift the vehicle into a low gear to allow room around the shift lever to remove the plastic panel. *Keep your foot on the brake when taking vehicle out of park!!* Very carefully, pull the exterior dash panel straight out, starting at the top and it will pop loose. Fully remove the panel and place the vehicle back into PARK. 3. Remove the factory (or aftermarket head unit) and the HVAC controls by unclipping them from the internal dash. Also remove the factory CD player (if equipped) or the cubby hole. 4. Unclip all wire harnesses from the HVAC unit and remove the unit from the vehicle. Using a saw or sander, remove all mounting tabs from this unit until all outer sides are smooth, see pic below. Set the unit aside until it is needed for reinstallation. Page 1

2 5. With the dash apart, use the mounting bracket and the pic below as a guide to show you what internal dash plastic must be trimmed. A small reciprocating air saw would be ideal to use but a Dremel with a cut off wheel will work as well. *Be careful not to cut through the lower right, external dash mounting tab. It s the square hole to the left of the cup holder as seen in pic.* 6. Test fit the mounting bracket into the dash to make sure all inner dash plastic is sufficiently trimmed. 7. Install the HVAC controls into the lower pocket of the mounting bracket. Space the HVAC controls out from the face of the mounting bracket s lower hole 1/8. See pic. *A kit will soon be released that will allow you to re-install your modified HVAC unit back into your dash if you wish to remove your double din and take your vehicle back to stock. A replacement dash panel will need to be purchased to complete the transition back to stock.* Page 2

3 8. Pre-drill holes for the #4 screws with the supplied drill bit. Use extreme caution to drill only as deep as necessary to prevent damage to the internal HVAC components. See Pic. 9. Very slowly and very carefully use the supplies #4 screws to secure the HVAC control box to the mounting bracket. The plastic on this box is very thin and fragile and will crack easily. *Do not install the head unit step #14* 10. Install the mounting bracket with the HVAC unit into the vehicle. Use the supplied, self-drilling #6 screws to secure the bracket to the vehicle s inner dash structure. The mounting brackets allows for the use of 4 screws per side. Page 3

4 11. The center section of the external dash (cover) needs to be cut out. Using a small reciprocating air saw or dremel, cut along the outside edge of the center section where it corners up. Cut the area out smaller than needed and sand the opening larger as needed, using the new plastic section as a gauge. See pic. 12. Install the exterior dash panel that you just cut out onto the vehicle for a test fit. The area you want to examine is around the HVAC unit. It may be necessary to remove some material from the left corner of the HVAC box as well as some plastic on the back side of the exterior dash cover to allow for the exterior dash panel to sit flush once reinstalled. See pics. Page 4

5 *VERY MINIMAL Sanding of the corner of the HVAC control box might be necessary as well.* *Do not sand any more of the corner of the HVAC box than necessary, you do not want the sanded edge to be seen once the dash is remolded* 13. Disassemble the dash and remove the mounting bracket. Page 5

6 14. Install your head unit on the mounting bracket. You can either use the sleeve provided with your head unit, or ISO install using the mounting holes and spaces provided. YOU MUST FIGURE HOW LONG AND WHAT SIZE OF BOLTS TO USE FOR THIS! TOO LONG OF BOLTS CAN DAMAGE YOUR HEAD UNIT. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ERRORS!! 15. Plug in all wires to your head unit and HVAC unit and install the assembled bracket (HVAC, head unit) into the dash 16. Now focus in the external dash section. Test fit and check the alignment of the new dash section before gluing it into place. Make any adjustments if necessary and glue the new dash section in place. The backside of the new dash section has a shoulder around the outside perimeter. This goes behind the dash panel and provides a glue seam to bond the two plastics. Allow it to dry completely before attempting to reassemble the dash. *Norton Speed Grip is a recommended epoxy, but many others will work.* 17. Plastic fill all seams or gaps and sand smooth. Paint to desire. 18. Reassemble your dash; Be careful when putting the plastic back on to not contact your head unit and scratch or damage the screen.
